The objectives of this study were as follows: to analyze the influence of age and education level on cognitive domains; to verify whether being parents and living at home with parents affect both parenting style and cognitive domains; to investigate how the type of the maternal and paternal parenting independently affects cognitive styles; to measure the predictive variables for the use of cognitive dysfunctional patterns and to investigate age as a moderating variable of the relation between parenting styles and cognitive domains in a group of adult men and women. The research involved 209 adults (118 males and 91 females) living in Sicily (Italy) aged between 20 and 60 years (M = 37.52; SD = 11.42). The research lasted for 1 year. The instruments used were the Parental Bonding Instrument to measure the perception of parenting during childhood and the Young Schema Questionnaire-3 to investigate cognitive patterns.Results: Data show that being a younger adult male with mother’s parenting style characterized by a lower level of nurturance is predictive of the disconnection and rejection domain, whereas, being a younger adult woman, with a higher level of maternal control is predictive of the impaired limits domain.Conclusion: This study underlines that because mothers and fathers establish different bonds with their children, care and control by both parents might impact different domains of development. Background: Despite increasing evidence suggesting that childhood maltreatment is significantly associated with psychosis, the specific role of bullying in the onset of psychotic disorders is still unclear. This study aimed to examine whether bullying was more prevalent amongst individuals presenting to services for the first time with a psychotic disorder than in unaffected community controls., Methods: Data on exposure to bullying, psychotic symptoms, cannabis use and history of conduct disorder were collected cross-sectionally from 222 first-presentation psychosis cases and 215 geographically-matched controls. Bullying victimisation was assessed retrospectively as part of the Brief Life Events schedule. Logistic regression was used to examine associations between exposure to bullying and case-control status, while controlling for potential confounders., Results: Psychosis cases were approximately twice as likely to report bullying victimisation when compared to controls. No significant interactions between bullying and either gender or cannabis use were found. Controls reporting being a victim of bullying were approximately twice as likely to also report at least one psychosis-like symptom., Conclusions: Our results extend previous research by suggesting that bullying victimisation may contribute to vulnerability to develop a psychotic disorder in some individuals., (© 2013 Elsevier B.V. Background/purpose: Different studies have evaluated testicular hormonal dysfunction in adolescent varicocele but with variable results. Recently, inhibin B has been proposed as a marker for spermatogenesis and Sertoli cell function. The aim of the present study was to study in a homogeneous cohort of adolescents inhibin B and other hormones to detect whether untreated varicocele may be associated with any modifications of these factors., Methods: Sixteen adolescents (mean age, 14.5 +/- 1.0 years), at Tanner stages 4 to 5 with grade II or III left-sided varicocele, underwent hormonal evaluation of inhibin B, basal testosterone, and both baseline and GnRH stimulated FSH and LH levels. Thirteen unaffected adolescents of age-matched and pubertal development were used as controls., Results: Patients with varicocele showed a significant reduction in the testicular volume of the affected side (13.3 +/- 4.1 vs 15.8 +/- 4.8 mL; P = .002) and significant reduced levels of inhibin B compared with controls (271.9 +/- 70.2 vs 327.1 +/- 34.9 pg/mL; P = .042). Inhibin B levels were significantly correlated with testes volume (r = 0.62; P = .0097). Other hormonal parameters were similar in both varicocele and control groups., Conclusion: Inhibin B is reduced in adolescents with untreated varicocele, and it is positively correlated with testicular volume. This could be an early marker for Sertoli cell damage, with possible implications for spermatogenesis and could represent a new indication for varicocele repair.

Salmonella infections can manifest themselves as acute abdominal problems and lead to emergency surgery. Some examples are: salmonella-related intestinal perforations, gallbladder involments, salpingitis, and peritonitis. Mesenteric lymphadenitis associated with salmonella mimics acute appendicitis and it is often difficult to establish a timely and tempestive diagnosis in children with right lower abdominal pain. Because of the difficult diagnostic process, a significant number of patients with salmonella infections present acute abdomen and undergo needless operations. Instead, in our case of salmonella-related acute abdomen, laparotomy was the right therapeutic choice. The conclusion is drawn that, even if there is not a precise diagnosis, in salmonella-related acute abdomen the surgical approach is the right choice, considering the high morbidity and mortality associated with untreated appendicitis and intestinal perforations.
