A Monte Carlo simulation of liquid water near a charged wall has been carried out for different values of the surface charge density. The surface excess of electric potential as a function of charge density has been determined from the polarization profiles. Abstract

Cu2SnZnS4-type compounds have attracted interest as low cost and high conversion efficiency solar cell devices, because of their appropriate band gap energies and absorption coefficients values. In the last years our group has developed an ongoing research aimed at the electrodeposition from aqueous solution of thin films of technological semiconductors. In this work, we exploited alternated electrodeposition of Cu, Sn, Zn and S by ECALD to obtain sulfide thin films, controlling the growth of the structures at the nanometric level. The study included the analysis of the electrochemical behavior of the solution containing the single elements, to assess the most efficient deposition of controlled amounts of material. By alternating deposition of the elements, growth of thin films has been obtained. Band gaps of the deposited materials exhibit modulation with sample composition and thickness.

Abstract

We exploited alternated electrodeposition of Cu, Sn and S to obtain CuxSnySz thin films. These materials are kesterite-type chalcogenides that have attracted a relevant interest from worldwide researchers as low cost and high conversion efficiency solar cell devices. Films were grown on silver substrate, controlling the growth of the electrodeposited structures at the nanometric level. The obtained films were characterized by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, voltammetric stripping and atomic force microscopy. Experimental bandgap energies resulted linearly modulated by changes of chemical composition and thickness. On the basis of these results, we candidate electrodeposition as a room temperature method to obtain thin films for solar cell technology with low energy investment and negligible environmental impact. Abstract

Nowadays, electrochemistry extends to the domain of material science because of the development of electrochemical methods for the electrodeposition of materials controlled down to atomic level. Electrocatalysis is largely employed for the coating of surfaces with metals able to exert catalytic effects in specific processes. The occurrence of synergistic effects between different metal layers are expected to play a role in important electrochemical reactions like the Oxygen Reduction Reaction (ORR). ORR is regarded as one of the most important electrocatalytic reaction operating in energy conversion devices (fuel cells) as well as in important industrial processes. In spite of the many attempts made in the last decade to create Pt-free catalysts for low temperature air cathodes, Pt remains the metal of choice at least for fuel cells operating in acid environments. In alkaline fuel cells where the flexibility concerning the cathode catalyst is much larger, Pt-free catalysts based on Ni, Ag, Co can be used. Even if these metals should not be considered non-precious metals, electrodeposition represents a good method for controlling and limiting the amount of deposited metals through either the use of the Faraday's law or the use of self-limiting phenomena such as those involved in underpotential deposition (UPD). On this ground, a good compromise between metal cost and catalyst performance is represented by be the use of small quantities of catalysts and the development of new methods able to modify the structure of the deposited metals increasing the number of active sites. Some of us have recently proposed a method for the modification of noble metal surfaces, denoted as ElectroChemical Milling and Faceting (ECMF). This approach has shown how the catalytic proprieties of Pt-nanoparticles could be enhanced by one order of magnitude for the ethanol electrooxidation after milling and faceting actions. Following a similar approach we have studied the catalytic proprieties of small (3-17 ?g cm-2) quantities of silver microparticles electrodepited on glassy carbon electrodes before and after an electrochemical oxidative/reductive protocol in alkaline media. Such an approach which involves the formation and subsequent reduction of the silver oxide, has resulted in more effective catalysts for the ORR. The modification of the surface active sites, their morphological properties (surface roughness) and their catalytic performance in ORR will be properly discussed.

Abstract

The combination of two different metals, each of them acting on different steps of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), yields synergic catalytic effects. In this respect, the electrocatalytic effect of silver is enhanced by the addition of cobalt, which is able to break the O–O bond of molecular oxygen, thus accelerating the first step of the reduction mechanism. At the same time, research is to further reduce the catalyst's cost, reducing the amount of Ag, which, even though being much less expensive than Pt, is still a noble metal. From this point of view, using a small amount of Ag together with an inexpensive material, such as graphite, represents a good compromise. The aim of this work was to verify if the synergic effects are still operating when very small amounts of cobalt (2–10 μg·cm−2) are added to the microparticles of silver electrodeposited on glassy carbon, described in a preceding paper from us. To better stress the different behaviour observed when cobalt and silver are contemporarily present in the deposit, the catalytic properties of cobalt alone were investigated. The analysis was completed by the Levich plots to evaluate the number of electrons involved and by Tafel plots to show the effects on the reaction mechanism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
