Precise measurements of the S-stars orbiting SgrA* have set strong constraints on the nature of the compact object at the centre of the Milky Way. The presence of a black hole in that region is well established, but its neighbouring environment is still an open debate. In that respect, the existence of dark matter in that central region may be detectable due to its strong signatures on the orbits of stars: the main effect is a Newtonian precession which will affect the overall pericentre shift of S2, the latter being a target measurement of the GRAVITY instrument. The exact nature of this dark matter (e.g. stellar dark remnants or diffuse dark matter) is unknown. This article assumes it to be a scalar field of toroidal distribution, associated with ultralight dark matter particles, surrounding the Kerr black hole. Such a field is a form of `hair' expected in the context of superradiance, a mechanism that extracts rotational energy from the black hole. Orbital signatures for the S2 star are computed and shown to be detectable by GRAVITY. The scalar field can be constrained because the variation of orbital elements depends both on the relative mass of the scalar field to the black hole and on the field mass coupling parameter.

J.-C. à la fin du haut Moyen Âge, cette recherche associe l’exploration des formations superficielles de la plaine alluviale de la rivière bordant le site à celle d’un marais où sont conservés plusieurs réseaux hydrauliques antiques. Cet article présente les différentes phases de l’évolution de cet habitat, aux dimensions exceptionnelles, et les modalités de l’adaptation par ses occupants successifs d’un environnement considéré, a priori, comme défavorable., [EN] A pluridisciplinary study is going on at Saint-Romain-de-Jalionas (Isère) on a villa and its territory on the northern fringes of Narbonensis. This research includes the excavation of a rural establishment occupied without interruption from the 3rd c. BC to the end of early Middle Age and the exploration of superficial formations of the alluvial valley of the river along the site and of a marsh where several Roman hydraulic systems are preserved. In this article, the different phases of occupation of this exceptionally vast settlement are being described altogether, with the modes of adaptation by its successive inhabitants of an environment considered as unfavourable.

Nephrons in the avian kidney have an extremely heterogeneous size distribution. The shortest nephrons have very small glomeruli, and the larger nephrons have very large glomeruli. Physiological, nutritional, and disease factors may be correlated with the functioning of different sized nephrons. The present study was conducted to compare two techniques for measuring glomerular size distributions. A postmortem India ink infusion technique gave results that were highly comparable to an in vivo alcian blue infusion technique. Single Comb White Leghorn pullets were found to have approximately 270,000 glomeruli per kidney; glomerular circumferences and diameters ranged between .07 to .42 mm and .02 to.14 mm, respectively. A unimodal size distribution was found, with most glomeruli falling within the circumference range of .15 to .26 mm. The alcian blue technique should provide a quantitative in vivo method for evaluating selective tubular damage or physiological glomerular intermittency.

THE females which produce chicks for broiler production have changed greatly during the past 15 to 20 years. Broiler chickens were twice as large at 8 weeks of age in 1965 as those of the same age in 1952 (Maine Broiler Test Reports, 1952–1965). The mothers of broiler chicks now reach an adult body weight of 3 1/2 to 4 kilograms. During this same period (1950–1965), egg-type females have been reduced from about 2.2 kilograms adult body weight to approximately 1.9 kilograms. This dramatic difference in body size between broiler- and egg-type females has been accompanied by many other changes in appearance and behavioral activity. External and behavioral differences are more readily observable than those which are internal and physiological The following report records observations concerning non-rhythmic laying patterns and the high incidence of egg defects in these large-bodied broiler strains. THE INFLUENCE of the phenotype for a simply inherited or qualitative trait on a more complex trait such as body weight has been studied to some extent in chickens. Kan et al. (1959) reported that comb type (single or pea) had no significant influence on body weight at six weeks of age; however, when housed at seven months of age, the single-comb birds were heavier than the pea-comb ones. Siegel and Dudley (1963) reported that cockerels with pea combs were significantly heavier than those with single combs at six and nine weeks of age in only one of three experiments. No significant differences were observed in the other two experiments at three, six, or nine weeks of age. Collins et at.
