5. The 'PALS' Prevention Program and Its Long-Term Impact on Student Intentions to Use Alcohol, Tobacco, and Marijuana

Abstract

A unique Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug (ATOD) prevention program called "PALS" (Prevention through Alternative Learning Styles) was implemented with middle school students with the goal of enhancing student knowledge of the harmful effects of ATOD, promoting the use of refusal skills and reducing intentions to use ATOD in the future. Intentions to use were measured at four points: pre-"PALS," post-"PALS," and at 1-year and 2-year follow-ups. Student survey responses were then matched and compared across the four time periods. This article reports on the long-term effectiveness of "PALS" on student intentions to use ATOD in high school. When follow-up surveys of "PALS" students were compared to students not exposed to "PALS" (comparison group), the "PALS" students had significantly lower intentions to use alcohol and tobacco, providing evidence that the "PALS" intervention did have a long-term impact on intentions to use these substances.

6. Evaluating the Prevention through Alternative Learning Styles Program

Abstract

This article reports on the evaluation of a two-year alcohol, tobacco and other drug (ATOD) intervention, the Prevention through Alternative Learning Styles ("PALS") program, targeting both teachers and middle-school students. Teachers are taught to recognize students' unique learning styles in the context of the ATOD curriculum and adapt the ATOD messages to these learning styles. The student curriculum consists of 5 topic areas with two lessons per topic area. Student goals include enhancing students' knowledge of the effects of ATOD, promoting students' use of refusal skills and decreasing students' intentions to use ATOD. The program was implemented in school districts in the greater Dayton Ohio area. Support was found for the intervention's overall effectiveness in both years, with statistically significant improvements demonstrated by the students who participated in the "PALS" program. Students had an increase in their knowledge of ATOD topic areas and a decrease in their intentions to use ATOD. (Contains 4 tables.)

11. Engaging Students through Class Participation.

Abstract

This paper recounts the efforts undertaken to encourage greater participation and engagement from students in a college-level humanities class. Three types of activities were utilized: (1) connected to homework and attempted to focus on assigned readings; (2) attempted to get students to foucs on what was happening in the classroom on that particular day; and (3) involved a critical thinking activity pushing students to reflect on how the content connected with their lives. The activities were generally effective in their aims; and test scores and attendance improved as well. (DB)

18. Illicit drug use by women with disabilities

Abstract

As in the general female population, women with disabilities face a number of situations that encourage illicit drug use, such as low self-esteem, peer pressure, and family history of substance abuse. In addition, women with disabilities more frequently encounter problems of personal adjustment, unusual developmental experiences, easy access to prescription drugs, unemployment, and medical or health-related difficulties. Using a random sample of 900 women with disabilities, we conducted a study of the patterns of illicit drug use and risk factors relating to illicit drug use among women with various disabilities. Multiple regression analyses revealed that age, illicit drug use by a best friend, being a victim of substance-abuse-related violence, and attitudes toward substance use by people with disabilities were significantly related to illicit drug use by the study population. 42. Uncertainty over time and its relationship to life satisfaction for biological valve patients

Abstract

This descriptive correlational study was designed to determine the perceived level of uncertainty of individuals who have had a biological cardiac valve implanted. The study investigated the relationship between uncertainty and factors that might influence this uncertainty such as time since implant, age at initial implant, and the relationships between uncertainty and quality of life indicators, such as patients' perceptions of their life satisfaction. The Lazarus and Folkman (1984) cognitive theory of psychological stress and coping guided this study. A convenience sample of 121 subjects who had their first biological valve implanted at least 12 months prior completed the Uncertainty Stress Scale (USS), the Mishel Uncertainty in Illness Scale Community Version (MUISCV), the Cantril Self-Anchoring Scale, and a patient information sheet. The subjects were mailed the questionnaires. Overall, the biological valve patients perceived moderately low levels of uncertainty. The nature of the uncertainty experienced appears to be primarily generated by the patient not being able to foretell the future and by unpredictability in their situation. There was a significant difference in uncertainty depending on the time since implant for subjects grouped according to year of implant. Subjects whose valves were implanted between 1976 and 1978, who had their valves implanted for approximately 11 to 13 years, experienced the lowest level of uncertainty. The highest level of uncertainty was experienced by subjects implanted between 1979 and 1981. Subjects implanted between 1982 and 1984 experienced the second highest level of uncertainty and the second lowest level of uncertainty was experienced by subjects implanted between 1985 and 1987. A significant relationship was not found between uncertainty and the age of a patient at implant. Quality of life indicators of biological valve patients may be adversely influenced by uncertainty. Higher levels of uncertainty are appraised as stressful or threatening and contribute to a poorer past, present, and future life satisfaction and health status. A significant positive relationship was demonstrated between uncertainty and stress. The higher the level of uncertainty, the higher the subjects' overall perceptions of stress. The findings of this study were discussed in relation to other research studies, the theoretical framework, and methodological problems inherent to the study. Implications for nursing practice, theory, and education, and recommendations for future research were identified.
