Introduction: Use of substances during pregnancy is a global health concern. Interprofessional care teams can provide an optimal care approach to engage individuals who use substances during the perinatal period. The purpose of this scoping review is to provide a comprehensive summation of published literature reporting on interprofessional care models for perinatal individuals who use substances. Methods: We conducted a systematic search for articles from health-related databases. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) was followed. Data were extracted and synthesized to identify the interprofessional care team roles, program and/or provider characteristics, and care outcomes of these models. Results: We screened 645 publications for full text eligibility. Eleven articles met full inclusion criteria and were summarized. Programs were built on co-location of services, partnership with other agencies, available group/peer support and approaches inclusive of cultural care, trauma informed care, and harm reduction principles. Discussion: There is growing evidence supporting integrated care models that are inclusive of relational care providers from multiple health care professions to achieve wraparound care. Conclusions: Many of the interprofessional care models studied have successfully blended social, primary, pregnancy, and addictions care. Background: Nursing students must graduate prepared to bravely enact the art and science of nursing in environments infiltrated with ethical challenges. Given the necessity and moral obligation of nurses to engage in discourse within nursing ethics, nursing students must be provided a moral supportive learning space for these opportunities. Situating conversations and pedagogy within a brave space may offer a framework to engage in civil discourse while fostering moral courage for learners. Research Objective: The aim of this research is to explore the influence of a structured self-assessment tool called the ESA "Engagement Self-Assessment" on the alignment and creation of a brave space in a nursing ethics course. Research Design: This study used an exploratory, cross-sectional survey design. Participants and Study Setting: Data from 39 undergraduate nursing students enrolled in a nursing healthcare ethics & law course using the ESA were recruited. Ethical Considerations: Participation was voluntary and informed without coercion. Written consent was obtained prior to participation. Research ethics approval was obtained by the Institutional Research Ethics Board of the recruited participants (Ethics # 2022-23-03). Findings: The ESA provided structured self-reflection on the impact of shared vulnerability within a brave space. However, commitment to a brave space was not strongly influenced by the ESA, but rather by a mutual "commitment to others." Conclusion: A teaching tool such as an ESA can be used to facilitate instructor expectations of civil discourse and discussion of difficult topics. Rules of engagement such as those found in brave spaces can help transform fear of vulnerability into authentic growth for learners. A morally supportive learning space can support critical opportunities for ethical development. Required first-year English courses present instructors with a challenge common in the humanities: How do we motivate students to engage in active reading rather than passively scroll down online guides? Introductory literature courses aim to develop students' critical thinking through close reading, analysis, and argumentation--skills demanding attention to nuance in the text and the reader's response. The use of SparkNotes cannot capture this, yet the trade of effort and nuance for ease and clarity tempts many students. This essay proposes the use of expanded pedagogical transparency to promote enhanced reading, especially in required cognates. Transparency has been shown to increase the effectiveness of college teaching and to be welcomed by most students in relation to assignment purpose and design (Anderson, Hunt, Powell, & Dollar, 2013). A parallel trend in contemporary business culture stresses the benefits of "open communication climate" in which goals and strategies succeed more when clearly articulated and shared. After discussing various forms of transparency that can be transferred across disciplines, the author describes a subject-specific case from her first-year required literature survey: a scaffolded, ultimately collaborative analytical reading assignment on Matthew Arnold's "Dover Beach" that's proven (over three iterations of the course) to involve more students in more active reading the more transparency she employs.

Background: Limited knowledge of the experiences of conflicts of conscience found in nursing literature. Objectives: To explore the individual experiences of a conflict of conscience for neonatal nurses in Alberta. Research design: Interpretive description was selected to help situate the findings in a meaningful clinical context. Participants and research context: Five interviews with neonatal nurses working in Neonatal Intensive Care Units throughout Alberta. Ethical consideration: Ethics approval from the Health Research Ethics Board at the University of Alberta. Findings: Three common themes emerged from the interviews: the unforgettable conflict with pain and suffering, finding the nurse's voice, and the unique proximity of nurses. Discussion and conclusion: The nurses described a conflict of conscience when the neonate in their care experienced undermanaged pain and unnecessary suffering. During these experiences, they felt guilty, sad, hopeless, and powerless when they were unable to follow their conscience. Informal ways to follow their conscience were employed before declaration of conscientious objection was considered. This study highlights the vital importance of respecting a conflict of conscience to maintain the moral integrity of neonatal nurses and exposes the complexities of conscientious objection. This essay identifies and examines a narrative structure—here called the sterility plot—that is shown to recur in British mid-19th century psychiatric texts and imaginative literature engaging mental science. Treating physicians Bucknill and Tuke's A Manual of Psychological Medicine and novelist Bulwer Lytton's A Strange Story as influential case studies, it explores in particular the Gothic-styled spectralisation used by both Victorian medical and literary authors to characterize females whose mental disorders are depicted as bound with a short- or long-term inability to reproduce. The narratives thereby gender, pathologise, and suspensefully dramatise the plot trajectory of mentally ill patients' clinical and fictional case histories, which, taken together, is argued to reveal mid-century medico-cultural anxieties about the health of Britain's imperial future being threatened by potentially sterile Englishwomen. Heterosis or hybrid vigor refers to the superior phenotypes of hybrids relative to their parental inbred lines. Recently, soil microbes were identified as an environmental driver of maize heterosis. While manipulation of the soil microbial community consistently altered heterosis, the direction of the effect appeared to be dependent on the microbiome composition, environment, or both. Abiotic factors are well-known modifiers of heterosis expression, however, how the interactive effects between the soil microbial community and abiotic factors contribute to heterosis are poorly understood. To disentangle the proposed mechanisms by which microbes influence heterosis, we characterize the variation in heterosis expression when maize was grown in soil inocula derived from active maize farms or prairies. While we did not observe consistent differences in heterosis among plants grown in these inocula, our observations reaffirm that microbial effects on heterosis are likely specific to the local microbial community. The introduction of a nutrient amendment resulted in greater heterosis expression in the presence of an agricultural inoculum but not a prairie inoculum. We also observed an effect of soil inocula and nutrient treatment on the composition of bacterial and fungal communities in the root endosphere. In addition, the interaction between soil and nutrient treatment significantly affected bacterial community composition, whereas fungal community composition was only marginally affected by this interaction. These results further suggest that the soil microbial community plays a role in maize heterosis expression but that the abiotic environment is likely a larger driver.

Both chronic and acute drought alter the composition and physiology of soil microbiomes, with implications for globally important processes including carbon cycling and plant productivity. When water is scarce, selection favors microbes with thicker peptidoglycan cell walls, sporulation ability, and constitutive osmolyte production (Schimel, Balser, and Wallenstein 2007)-but also the ability to degrade complex plant-derived polysaccharides, suggesting that the success of plants and microbes during drought are inextricably linked. However, communities vary enormously in their drought responses and subsequent interactions with plants. Hypothesized causes of this variation in drought resilience include soil texture, soil chemistry, and historical precipitation patterns that shaped the starting communities and their constituent species (Evans, Allison, and Hawkes 2022). Currently, the physiological and molecular mechanisms of microbial drought responses and microbe-dependent plant drought responses in diverse natural soils are largely unknown (de Vries et al. 2023). Here, we identify numerous microbial taxa, genes, and functions that characterize soil microbiomes with legacies of chronic water limitation. Soil microbiota from historically dry climates buffered plants from the negative effects of subsequent acute drought, but only for a wild grass species native to the same region, and not for domesticated maize. In particular, microbiota with a legacy of chronic water limitation altered the expression of a small subset of host genes in crown roots, which mediated the effect of acute drought on transpiration and intrinsic water use efficiency. Our results reveal how long-term exposure to water stress alters soil microbial communities at the metagenomic level, and demonstrate the resulting "legacy effects" on neighboring plants in unprecedented molecular and physiological detail.
