International audience; Discovery of a new population of Rhithrogena delphinensis Sowa & Degrange, 1987, in the Arves Massif, and additions to the morphological description of the larva (Ephemeroptera, Heptageniidae). Rhithrogena delphinensis, described originally on the basis of four larvae from the Western Alps, south of the Arves Massif and from the northern flank of the Ecrins Massif, had not been captured again since 1986. Here, we report the discovery of a new population from river Arvan, whose drainage basin is located between the Grandes Rousses Massif and the northern flank of the Arves Massif. This newly discovered population seems abundant in numbers, and reveals the particular ecological requirements of the species as well as its dependence on glacier fed or nival streams. The morphological characteristics of the larvae are described in detail, and illustrated by photographs. The variability of some of the proposed identification criteria is discussed, and a key to the identification of the Rhithrogena species from the alpestris group of the Western Alps, to which R. delphinensis belongs, is provided. Finally, a portion of 658 base pairs of the COI gene of R. delphinensis is sequenced for the first time and compared to already existing data on the alpestris group in the Western Alps.

Description of last instar larva The last instar larva of L. pauliani inhabits a case that is triangular in cross-section, made of three pieces of leaf attached by their longitudinal edges (Fig. 2A). [Early instars build a cylindrical case made of sand and diverse plant particles (Fig. 2B)]. Body: Last instar larva length ~ 9.5 mm. Head: Colouration uniformly brown with light-coloured muscle scars and pale circular areas around eyes (Figs 3A���3C). Head elongate, tapering anteriorly, with antennae longer that half of width of frontoclypeal apotome, but not extending beyond anterior edge of labrum (Figs 3B, 3C). Fronto-clypeal apotome narrowly triangular, constricted near mid-length, with pointed posterior apex joining short, asymmetrically curved coronal suture, convex to left (Fig. 3B). Eyes large, dark, simple, surrounded by large, pale, circular areas (Figs 3A, 3B). Pair of subocular ecdysial lines present on head capsule, running under eyes, horizontally reaching posterior part of head and dividing genae into upper and lower parts (Fig. 3A). Labrum yellowish, rectangular, medially indented on anterior edge (Figs 3B, 6A). Mandibles brown, short, shredder-type; left mandible with median short brush, slightly larger than right mandible (Figs 6B, 6C). Anterior ventral apotome forming pear-shaped elongate triangle nearly reaching posteriorly to two small posterior ventral sclerites (Fig. 3C). Thorax: Pronotum brown, concolorous with head capsule, medially divided and with anterolateral corners delimited by pair of slanting ecdysial lines, each starting from middle of lateral edge to reach submedial one-fifth of anterior edge of respective half sclerite (Figs 3D, 3E). Foretrochantins flat, elongate, and finger-shaped (Figs 3A, 3D). Sclerotised mesonotum medially divided, yellowish with brownish muscle scars and pair of conspicuous dark mesonotal bars characteristic of Athripsodini larvae extending from posterolateral corners to midlength; these mesonotal bars nearly parallel, each branching anteriorly to form fork (Fig. 3E). Metanotum membranous and bearing pair of setal area 1 (sa 1) setae submesally (best seen in profile in Figs 3D, 4D); pair of small and ill-defined sclerites, each bearing one long and three small setae, present on setal area 3 (sa 3, Figs 3E, 4F). Pair of dark, transverse intersegmental sclerites between mesosternum and metasternum. Metasternum bearing three pairs of setae, two pairs of sa 3 setae laterally and one pair of sa 2 seta submesally (Fig. 3F, with right submesal seta broken). Forelegs short and stocky; femora broad and with numerous long setae and row of pale strong spine-like setae on ventral margin; these strong setae also present on tibiae and tarsi; tarsal claws simple, short, curved, with prominent basal spine (Fig. 4A). Midlegs longer than forelegs and also with rows of strong spine-like setae on femora, tibiae, and tarsi, and prominent basal spine on each claw (Fig. 4B). Hind legs long and projected forward; rows of strong setae present on only tibiae (Fig. 4C, black arrow) and tarsi; prominent basal spine present on each claw. Hind femora, tibiae, and tarsi each with two rows of dense, long fringes of swimming setae, one row on each of dorsal and ventral margins (Fig. 4C). Abdomen: Segment I bearing one dorsal and two lateral humps (Fig. 4D). Pair of long setae located on each side of dorsal hump (Fig. 3E, black arrows). Each lateral hump with patch of very short brownish spines and two long setae anteriorly and darker, slightly sinuous, longitudinal, sclerotized bar posteriorly (Fig. 4E), similar to patch and bar of larvae of other Athripsodini species. Gills simple (Fig. 4D) and present on abdominal segments II���VII (only two dorsal gills on abdominal segment VII, see Fig. 5A). Lateral fringe composed of dense, long, and fine setae from abdominal segment III to end of segment VII (Fig. 5A). Continuing along line of lateral fringe on each side, row of short lateral tubercles present on abdominal segment VIII (Fig. 5B). Two long, dorsomesal upright setae present on abdominal tergite VIII (Fig. 5E). Abdominal tergite IX bearing one dorsomesal sclerite with three pairs of large setae posteriorly; inner pair of setae longer than others and intermediate pair of setae shortest (Figs 5D, 5E); row of two pairs of short, fine, lighter setae inserted between the row of these three pairs of long black setae and posterior edge of this sclerite. Two short lateral setae present on abdominal sternite IX (slightly visible in profile in Fig. 5D). Anal prolegs short, each with smaller dorsal sclerite and larger sole plate in contact with claw (Figs 5D, 5E). At base of claw insertion, on sole plate, one small and one long seta projecting ventrad (Fig. 5D). Each basal tuft inserted just above claw consisting of four thick and long black setae, mesal seta shorter than other three (Fig. 5D). In ventral view, oblique row of about fifteen upright spines extending from base of claw insertion almost to abdominal sternum IX (Figs 5C, 5F, black arrow). Ventral side of each anal proleg on each side of anus covered with many tight transverse rows of short, flattened spines (Figs 5C, 5F). River networks are among Earth's most threatened hot-spots of biodiversity and provide key ecosystem services (e.g., supply drinking water and food, climate regulation) essential to sustaining human well-being. Climate change and increased human water use are causing more rivers and streams to dry, with devastating impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem services. Currently, more than a half of the global river networks consist of drying channels, and these are expanding dramatically. However, drying river networks (DRNs) have received little attention from scientists and policy makers, and the public is unaware of their importance. Consequently, there is no effective integrated biodiversity conservation or ecosystem management strategy of DRNs.A multidisciplinary team of 25 experts from 11 countries in Europe, South America, China and the USA will build on EU efforts to assess the cascading effects of climate change on biodiversity, ecosystem functions and ecosystem services of DRNs through changes in flow regimes and water use. DRYvER (DRYing riVER networks) will gather and upscale empirical and modelling data from nine focal DRNs (case studies) in Europe (EU) and Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) to develop a meta-system framework applicable to Europe and worldwide. It will also generate crucial knowledge-based strategies, tools and guidelines for economically-efficient adaptive management of DRNs. Working closely with stakeholders and end-users, DRYvER will co-develop strategies to mitigate and adapt to climate change impacts in DRNs, integrating hydrological, ecological (including nature-based solutions), socio-economic and policy perspectives. The end results of DRYvER will contribute to reaching the objectives of the Paris Agreement and placing Europe at the forefront of research on climate change.

Distribution of the Psychomyiinae Metalype (Fig. 34)���The genus Metalype was described by Klap��lek (1898). Almost a century later, Malicky (1995), based on some characters of adults, considered Metalype and Psychomyia synonyms. Schmid (1997), after examination of Psychomyia collected in India between 1958 and 1962, described 55 new species that he divided into 6 Groups. His Psy. mahayinna Group included Psy. mahayinna Schmid 1961, Psy. fragilis Pictet 1834, Psy. klapaleki Malicky 1995, Psy. uncatissima Botosaneanu 1970, Psy. anaktujuh Malicky 1995, Psy. holzenthali Schmid 1997, and Psy. kumara Schmid 1997. Schmid (1997) considered that the Psy. mahayinna Group is ���le plus primitif du genre (Psychomyia) par la s��paration compl��te des appendices pr��anaux et des pointes du IX�� tergite et la forme simple des appendices inf��rieurs.��� Independently, Li & Morse (1997a), from a phylogenetic analysis, divided the Psychomyiidae into two subfamilies: the Psychomyiinae and the Tinodinae. They considered that the genus Metalype is valid. Schmid (1997) considered that the Psy. mahayinna Group belongs to the genus Psychomyia, but, de facto, the M. mahayinna Group corresponds to the genus Metalype. In the discussions by these specialists of adults, none of them refers to the publication of Edington & Alderson (1973), who argued that the larvae of Psychomyia pusilla and Metalype fragilis have characters that are too different for these two species to belong to the same genus. Waringer & Graf (2011) distinguished the larvae of these two species, but included them both in genus Psychomyia. Based on the works of Edington & Alderson (1973), Schmid (1997), and Li & Morse (1997a), we treat Psychomyia and Metalype as distinct genera. Metalype is a genus with eight species (Schmid 1997; Morse 2016; Fig. 34). There are two species in the West Palearctic Region: M. fragilis and M. klapaleki, considered to be sister species (Malicky 1995; Urbanic et al. 2003). There are six other species in Oriental Asia: one in Pakistan, another in Nepal, two others in India (Uttarakhand and Assam States), and two East Palearctic species: M. nithaiah Malicky 2014 in Taiwan and M. uncatissima (Botosaneanu 1970) in North Korea (Botosaneanu 1970), South Korea (Jung et al. 2011), and Japan (Torii 2011a, 2013). Recently, Qiu et al. (2017) described and redescribed four species: three new species for China: M. hubeiensis Qiu & Morse 2017 (from Hubei Province), M. shexianensis Qiu & Morse 2017 (An-hui Province), and M. truncata Qiu & Morse 2017 (Sichuan Province), and M. uncatissima (Botosaneanu 1970) in the Hei-long-jiang Province. Psychomyia (Fig. 35)���With about 150 species (Morse 2016), this is the genus of Psychomyiinae with the greatest number of species. The genus is missing from the Afrotropical Region. There are three species in the Nearctic Region, two of which are rather confined: Psy. nomada in the east, from South Carolina to Maine and Psy. lumina in the northwest from California to Washington. The third species Psy. flavida occurs in most of North America, from western British Colombia to Quebec in the north, southward to Arizona and North Carolina and probably all provinces and states between them (Rasmussen & Morse 2014). Psychomyia flavida also occurs in the East Palearctic Region from Japan to Mongolia (Torii 2011b; Chuluunbat & Morse 2007), including parts of Asian Russia (Amur Oblast, Altay, southern Khabarovsk, South Primorye, and Magadan Oblast; Ivanov 2011). In the West Palearctic Region (Wiberg-Larsen 2004; Malicky 2004, 2005; Uherkovich & Nogradi 1991; Ujvarosi et al. 2008), there are five species, one of which (P. pusilla) has a broad distribution throughout Europe from Ireland (O���Connor 2015) to Finland in the north (Tobias & Tobias 1981), southward to the western Maghreb (Dakki 1982; Malicky & Lounaci 1987) and to the Caucasus (Ivanov 2011) and Iran (Chvojka 2006) and the Levant (Flint 1967a, Sipahiler 2005), and probably all areas between them. The other four species are more confined. In the East Palearctic Region, there are, apart from P. flavida, nine species with six species endemic in Japan (Torii 2011b). The Oriental Region is a complex set: China, Southeast Asia, and the Indian subcontinent (including Sri Lanka). Five species occur in China (Yang et al. 2005), but the limit between the Oriental and East Palearctic Regions remains blurred in that country. Southeast Asia can be divided into two parts: Mainland Southeast Asia (MLSEA) including Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam, and Maritime Southeast Asia (MASEA) corresponding to Malaysia, Indonesia (except for West Papua which is administratively a part of Indonesia, but tectonically belongs to the Australian plate) and the Philippines. There are 30 Psychomyia species on the Mainland part (Malicky 2010) and 45 on the Maritime part (Morse 2016). The Indian subcontinent (Fig. 35), like Madagascar, was situated alongside the African continent 250 mya. Today, there are no species of Psychomyia known in the Afrotropical Region. During its long journey to the northeast, the Indian subcontinent remained isolated. The arrival of Psychomyia in India was possible only after the collision between India and Eurasia 30 million years ago, probably via Myanmar, because the Deccan Traps (covering 500 0 0 0 km2) and the Thar Desert in northwest India form a natural barrier to Trichoptera. The occurrence of Psy. benyagai Malicky & Chantaramongkol 1993 in Thailand, Vietnam, Bhutan, and India (Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh) (Malicky & Chantaramongkol 1993; Thapanya et al. 2004) supports that hypothesis, that the origin of the Indian species of Psychomyia probably was Southeast Asia. With regard to the countries situated in the Himalayas, North Pakistan has three species of Psychomyia, Nepal has two species) (Malicky 2006), and Bhutan has two species (Malicky et al. 2008) (Fig. 35). Until now, no Psychomyia have been found in Sri Lanka although only 31 kilometres separate southeastern India and Sri Lanka. During the glacial periods, a large, wide tombolo existed between southeastern India and Sri Lanka, as a result of the lowering of the level of the oceans, but this tombolo, consisting of sand and gravel, did not have adequate habitat for Trichoptera to complete their life cycle. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands belong to India (Malicky 1979) administratively, but geologically and tectonically they belong to the Sunda plate. Psychomyia is clearly an ���into India ��� genus sensu Datta-Roy et al. (2014). Paduniella (Fig. 36)���In the Nearctic Region, Paduniella occurs in Arkansas and Missouri (Pad. nearctica) (Flint 1967b; Rasmussen & Morse 2014); in the West Palearctic region, one species (Pad. vandeli) occurs in France (D��camps 1965; Coppa 2004; Coppa et al. 2008, 2010), the Iberian Peninsula (Gonzalez & Mendez 2011), and the western Maghreb (Dakki 1982; Malicky & Lounaci 1987). In European Russia, Paduniella uralensis occurs in both Western and Eastern Palearctic Russia (Central Volga, Ural Mountains, Far East; Ivanov 2011), East Palearctic China (Heilongjiang; Yang et al. 2005), and Japan (Nishimoto 2011). Also in the East Palearctic Region, Pad. amurensis occurs in Russia (Amur area, Khabarovsk Province, and South Primorye; Ivanov 2011) and Oriental China (Sichuan; Yang et al. 2005). Paduniella communis occurs in Japan (Nishimoto 2011) and Oriental China. In Southeast Asia, there are 14 species on the Mainland and 11 in Maritime Southeast Asia. For the Indian subcontinent (Fig. 37), the distribution of 20 known Paduniella species is different from those of Psychomyia. There are three species in Pakistan (Schmid 1961) and three in Nepal (Malicky 1997, 2004). For India, one species occurs in Bihar State (Pad. fissa Martynov 1935) and one species in the Gujarat State (Pad. sabarmata Johanson & Olah 2010). Eleven species have been described from Sri Lanka (Schmid 1958; Chantaramongkol & Malicky 1986). Five species of Paduniella are known from southern China (Li & Morse 1997b), one from Taiwan (Kobayashi 1987), three from the Philippines (Banks 1939; Mey 1998), and four from Vietnam (Johanson & Ol��h 2010). In the Afrotropical Region (Fig. 36), four species of Paduniella have been described (de Moor & Scott 2003; Tobias & Tobias 2008). Les Iles de Crépieux-Charmy ont été classées en Réserve Naturelle Volontaire de 1995 à 2003, puis protégées par Arrêté Préfectoral de Protection de Biotopes (APPB) depuis 2006. Ainsi ce site, susceptible d'héberger des espèces remarquables qui vont y trouver les conditions propices à leur maintien, présente des enjeux écologiques forts. Plusieurs inventaires biologiques ont été réalisés sur les bassins d'infiltration entre 2001 et 2003 (Barbe et al., 2003, 2004 ; Wauthier, 2002). Cependant, les autres milieux aquatiques de cette réserve n'ont à ce jour fait l'objet d'aucune prospection de leur faune malacologique. Le laboratoire DYNAM (Dynamiques et Modèles en Eco-hydrologie) d'IRSTEA Villeurbanne co-coordonne depuis 1998 le suivi scientifique de la restauration hydraulique et écologique du Rhône (RhônEco, restaurationrhone.univ-lyon1.fr). En effet, de nombreuses opérations coordonnées de restauration écologique ont été menées sur ce fleuve depuis presque 20 ans impliquant la définition des états initiaux des sites restaurés ainsi que le suivi de l'évolution de ces écosystèmes après restauration. C'est dans ce cadre que les macroinvertébrés des lônes du secteur de Miribel-Jonage sont étudiés depuis 2013. Le plan de gestion actuel du site de Crépieux-Charmy prévoyant une amélioration des connaissances de la faune et de la flore des milieux aquatiques de cette réserve, autres que les bassins d'infiltration, IRSTEA s'est associé au CREN-RA dans le cadre de cette convention de collaboration afin de réaliser un inventaire malacologique du site de Crépieux-Charmy. Finalement, une comparaison entre les faunes de ce dernier site et celles du secteur de Miribel-Jonage situé immédiatement en amont sera proposée. Le secteur de Miribel-Jonage possède une richesse en mollusques presque deux fois plus importante qu'à Crépieux-Charmy. On peut supposer que cette richesse est malgré tout sous-estimée car les données récoltées à Miribel-Jonage, contrairement à celle récoltées dans le cadre de cet inventaire, n'avait pas pour objet l'inventaire de la faune malacologique. La comparaison de la composition des malacocénoses entre les différentes stations des deux secteurs met clairement en évidence l'importance des conditions environnementales sur la richesse des peuplements. Par exemple, les stations fortement alimentées par la nappe phréatique sont les plus diversifiées du jeu de données. En effet, on trouve dans ces milieux des eaux plus fraîches et bien minéralisées, riches en carbonates, favorables au bon développement des mollusques. A Crépieux-Charmy les stations les plus diversifiées sont celles qui sont en relation plus ou moins régulière avec le fleuve.

International audience; A molecular genetic approach showed no difference between American and French specimens of E. compressa as well as Dutch individuals of 'E. casertana f. plicata', confirming the presence of this North-American pea clam species in The Netherlands. The analysis of this species in various collections revealed that E. compressa was introduced into Northeastern Germany before 1940, probably via the Elbe estuary and the Hamburg harbour. The apparent extension of the species over Western Europe since the 1990s suggests a second phase of introduction.
