Soil–structure interaction can significantly affect the seismic vulnerability of systems through several mechanisms that depend on the mutual effects of the soil properties and the structural characteristics. In this work, a probabilistic-based approach was applied to evaluate such effects on the fragility of an isolated bridge representing a typical Californian highway bridge. Analytical fragility curves were developed using OpenSees, implementing hysteretic materials and advanced plasticity models to represent non-linearity. The mutual non-linear effects of soil deformability and isolation on the system (soil–foundation–structure) were assessed by considering several limit states for the column ductility and the deck displacement. Bridges are fundamental links for the movement of goods and people and bridge damage can thus have significant impacts on society and the economy. Earthquakes can be extremely destructive and can compromise bridge functionality, which is essential for communities. Evaluation of bridge functionality is thus fundamental in the planning of emergency responses and socioeconomic recovery procedures. It is especially useful to define parameters to assess investments in bridge infrastructure. Resilience is a key parameter that can identify decision making procedures necessary for recovery investments. In this regard, resilience can be defined as the rapidity of a system to return to pre-disaster levels of functionality. This aim of this work was to assess the lack of robust analytical procedures for quantifying systematic restoration for earthquake-damaged bridges, to provide a link between the assessment of resilience and its application in decision making approaches. The proposed methodology (called seismic resilience for recovery investments of bridges) uses functionality–time curves that allow quantification of resilience along with readable findings for a wider range of stakeholders. The results presented in this paper should be of interest to multi-sectorial actors (i.e. bridge owners, transportation authorities and public administrators) and could drive interdisciplinary applications such as the assessment of recovery techniques and solutions. This paper quantified the seismic resilience (SR) of different bridge classes by performing three-dimensional advanced numerical simulations in Opensees. SR was calculated by performing the seismic resilience for recovery investments of bridge (SRRIB) methodology that is based on the quantification of the losses and the repair time. In particular, the probabilistic-based methodology developed by the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center (PEER) was implemented to produce fragility curves by considering the longitudinal displacement of the deck as the reference parameter. The recovery process was modeled using a linear formulation due to the unavailability of information from past earthquakes. Soil liquefaction is considered as one of the most significant issues that leads to failure of shallow and deep foundations. However, the effect of liquefaction on the seismic response of piles still poorly understood. Therefore, this research examines the seismic response of a pile embedded in soil stratum of saturated fine-grained soils. Midas GTS/NX is used to carry out the number assessment. In addition, the modified UBCSAND soil constitutive model is used to depict the nonlinear features of saturated sand during earthquake waves. The developed three-dimensional model is first validated using the results of a shaking table test of a pile embedded in coarse-grained soil, where good agreement is obtained between the finite element model and the experimental results for the displacement, acceleration, and liquefaction ratio demonstrated good agreement. Furthermore, the orientations of the vectors produced by the numerical study, that matched a global circular flow characteristic, reflected the movement of the liquefied soil all around pile. The findings showed a considerable decrease in the pile frictional resistance during the seismic events as a consequence of increasing the pore water pressure and subsequent liquefaction. Regarding this, before the soil was entirely softened, resistance due to friction was observed near the ground, in correspondence with the loose sand layer. In addition, the pile showed excessive settling, which is due to the decrease of the soil stiffness caused by the increase of the pore water pressure. The results of this research provide an insight into the mechanism of the behavior of pile in saturated coarse-grained soils and thus, it helps to improve future research on the topic and also achieve better design of piles embedded in saturated coarse-grained soils. This paper provides new and useful insights into the performance and efficiency of geotechnical seismic isolation (GSI) systems with gravel-rubber mixtures containing 10%, 25% and 40% volumetric rubber content (VRC). Finite element numerical models were developed in OpenSees and subjected to sinusoidal ground motions with varying input base acceleration and frequency. The best seismic performance was attained for VRC = 40% at a frequency of 8 Hz. Using a newly developed GSI efficiency index, the energy dissipation efficiency of VRC = 40% was found to vary between good to excellent, while that of VRC = 10% and 25% is poor. The seismic resilience of bridges has become an important concept in civil engineering since these systems need to remain operative during and after earthquakes. In this regard, the definition of recovery needs to consider the delay time (named as the time between an event and the beginning of the recovery process). The original concept of seismic resilience has been expanded herein in order to account for the delay time of bridge configurations. Its role in the quantification of seismic resilience has been investigated by performing a case study of a Californian highway bridge subjected to an ensemble of 100 input motions. Shallow utility tunnels with exceptionally large cross-sections in weak soil can face significantly more severe seismic risks compared to conventional deep tunnels in seismic hazard areas. This study investigates the seismic response and isolation technologies applied to a large section utility tunnel with 4 compartments in one layer, employing seismic simulations. The engineering context, dynamic motions, and measuring points of the numerical simulation were introduced. Subsequently, the finite element method was employed to explore the seismic behaviors of the large section utility tunnel when subjected to strong earthquake excitations under four conditions. The study explored and comparatively evaluated the seismic isolation effectiveness of three proposed schemes: the grouting scheme, the buffer layer, and the assembly of three-quarters buffer layer, cushion and grouting. The analysis included various indexes such as the deformation, the principal and shear stress, and the safety factor. The finding reveals that the assembly seismic scheme exhibits the most significant seismic effect (95.39%), followed by the buffer layer (38.82%), and the grouting scheme (25.66%). The assembly seismic scheme is recommended for the seismic design in the current large-section utility tunnels. Resilience of systems to natural hazards has become an interesting concept in civil engineering and it is based on the determination of the losses due to the impacts of natural hazards. In the last decades, many contributions have focused on the assessment of losses that may occur at the time of the event, as generally assumed for earthquakes. However, this assumption may be incorrect when the interval between the time of occurrence and the time when the system functionality reaches the minimum value needs to be considered. This paper aims to propose a novel method to quantify this interval, which is called disruption time, by proposing a novel formulation of the loss model based on infrastructure redundancy. The proposed method was herein applied to a case study that considers landslides in Sri Lanka. The main goal of the paper is to propose a formulation that can be implemented in a more comprehensive framework to calculate more realistically the resilience of systems to natural hazards.
