Abstract

The 8He(d,p) reaction was studied in inverse kinematics at 15.4A MeV using the MUST2 Si-CsI array in order to shed light on the level structure of 9He. The well known 16O(d,p)17O reaction, performed here in reverse kinematics, was used as a test to validate the experimental methods. The 9He missing mass spectrum was deduced from the kinetic energies and emission angles of the recoiling protons. Several structures were observed above the neutron-emission threshold and the angular distributions were used to deduce the multipolarity of the transitions. This work confirms that the ground state of 9He is located very close to the neutron threshold of 8He and supports the occurrence of parity inversion in 9He., Comment: Exp\'erience GANIL/SPIRAL1/MUST2

Abstract

Fusion-evaporation in the $^{124}$Sn+$^{136}$Xe system is studied using a high intensity xenon beam provided by the Ganil accelerator and the LISE3 wien filter for the selection of the products. Due to the mass symmetry of the entrance system, the rejection of the beam by the spectrometer was of the order of $5times10^8$. We have thus performed a detailed statistical analysis to estimate random events and to infer the fusion-evaporation cross sections. No signicant decay events were detected and upper limit cross sections of 172 pb, 87 pb and 235 pb were deduced for the synthesis of $^{257}$Rf, $^{258}$Rf and $^{259}$Rf, respectively., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The spectroscopy of 21O has been investigated using a radioactive 20O beam and the (d,p) reaction in inverse kinematics. The ground and first excited states have been determined to be Jpi=5/2+ and Jpi=1/2+ respectively. Two neutron unbound states were observed at excitation energies of 4.76 +- 0.10 and 6.16 +- 0.11. The spectroscopic factor deduced for the lower of these interpreted as a 3/2+ level, reveals a rather pure 0d3/2 single-particle configuration. The large energy difference between the 3/2+ and 1/2+ states is indicative of the emergence of the N=16 magic number. For the higher lying resonance, which has a character consistent with a spin-parity assignment of 3/2+ or 7/2-, a 71% branching ratio to the first 2+ state in 20O has been observed. Abstract

The structure of $^{44}$S has been studied using delayed $\gamma$ and electron spectroscopy at \textsc{ganil}. The decay rates of the 0$^+_2$ isomeric state to the 2$^+_1$ and 0$^+_1$ states have been measured for the first time, leading to a reduced transition probability B(E2~:~2$^{+}_1$$\rightarrow$0$^{+}_2)$= 8.4(26)~e$^2$fm$^4$ and a monopole strength $\rho^2$(E0~:~0$^{+}_2$$\rightarrow$0$^{+}_1)$ =~8.7(7)$\times$10$^{-3}$. Comparisons to shell model calculations point towards prolate-spherical shape coexistence and a phenomenological two level mixing model is used to extract a weak mixing between the two configurations., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters

Abstract

We have studied the 1999 soft X-ray transient outburst of XTE J1859+226 at radio and X-ray wavelengths. The event was characterised by strong variability in the disc, corona and jet - in particular, a number of radio flares (ejections) took place and seemed well-correlated with hard X-ray events. Apparently unusual for the `canonical soft' X-ray transient, there was an initial period of low/hard state behaviour during the rise from quiescence but prior to the peak of the main outburst - we show that not only could this initial low/hard state be an ubiquitous feature of soft X-ray transient outbursts but that it could also be extremely important in our study of outburst mechanisms., Comment: 12 pages, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

The quenching of the N=20 shell gap in neutron-rich nuclei is investigated by studying the single-particle structure of 27Ne via neutron transfer using a 26Ne beam. Two low-lying negative-parity intruder states have been observed, the lowest of which is identified as Jπ=3/2−, confirming earlier speculations. A level identified as 7/2− is observed higher in energy than the 3/2−, contrary to the ordering at β-stability and at an energy significantly different from the predictions of previous shell-model calculations. The measured energies and deduced spectroscopic factors are well reproduced in full (0,1)-ℏω 0s-0p-0d-1s-0f-1p calculations in which there is a significant ad hoc reduction (∼0.7 MeV) in the N=20 shell gap.

Abstract

Expérience GANIL; International audience; The results obtained from electron and in-beam spectroscopy experiments reveal that the 44S nucleus is located in a transitional region between the spherical 48Ca and the oblate 42Si. The comparison of the results with Large Scale Shell Model calculations points towards prolate-spherical shape coexistence where the ground state becomes the intruder configuration due to quadrupole excitations across the Z = 14 and N = 28 shell gaps.

Abstract

We investigated the low-lying spectroscopy of 6He via the 2-neutron transfer reaction induced by the 8He SPIRAL beam at 15.4 A.MeV on a proton-rich target. The light charged recoil particles produced by the direct reactions were measured using theMUST2 Si-strip telescope array. Two new resonances were observed above the known 2+ state in 6He, and the angular momentum transfer was deduced through the analysis of the angular distributions. Results are discussed in comparison with the recent calculations of various nuclear structure theories which include the coupling to the continuum technique and to the ones which give an understanding of the cluster correlations in the light weakly-bound nuclei.

Abstract

A beef cattle herd simulator was designed and developed as a tool for testing the consequences of farm management practices on herd performance. This discrete-event simulator is stochastic and individually based. It integrates a detailed reproduction model together with parameter-settable practices. This article details the various core components of the simulator. We then used it on virtual experiments with a herd of 70 cows. The first virtual experiment compared an autumn calving system with a herd management system based on winter calving. Adapting the herd management rules made it possible for the two systems to give similar outputs. In order to show the importance of the number of mated cows and of the reproductive period length on the performance of the herd, two different strategies were tested in with two new virtual experiments. The first one consisted in reducing the number of mated cows while the second one deals with reducing the reproduction period when the bull is present. The first of these scenarios led to drop in herd size in proportion with the female reduction over the years, whereas under the second scenario, a gap is simulated and the herd was wiped out after 10 years. We also focused an in-depth analysis on the variability of the results. The model shows that an average result not only masks variations from replication to replication but also masks variations in performances from year to year.

Abstract

Expérience GANIL, Spectrométre LISE-2000; We report on the g-factor measurement of the first isomeric state in 4316S27 [Ex = 320.5(5) keV, T1/2 = 415(5) ns, and g = 0:317(4)]. The 7/2- spin-parity of the isomer and the intruder nature of the ground state of the nucleus are experimentally established for the first time, providing direct and unambiguous evidence of the collapse of the N = 28 shell closure in neutron-rich nuclei. The shell model, beyond the mean-field and semiempirical calculations, provides a very consistent description of this nucleus showing that a well deformed prolate and quasispherical states coexist at low energy.

Abstract

Proton removal measurements of the (e, e′p), (d,3He), and fast-beam knockout types show a consistent reduction of the spectroscopic factor when compared to shell model calculations [1-3]. The loss of single-particle strength is explained as the result of the short-range correlations between nucleons that are not accounted for in shell model calculations [1,3]. A similar reduction is seen with neutron knockout measurements, as would be expected because of isospin symmetry [1]. The interpretation of these results is complicated by the observation of a dependence of the reduction factor on the asymmetry of the proton and neutron Fermi energy surfaces ( S, with S 0 for near-stable nuclei) [4]. However, the observed trend is largely deduced from measurements of nucleon knockout from exotic nuclei with large values of | S|, and there are no analogous (e, e′n) data to which to compare. It is, therefore, important to supplement these results with data obtained through different reaction mechanisms. The TIARA, MUST2, VAMOS, and EXOGAM systems were employed at the GANIL/SPIRAL facility to provide complete kinematics measurements of the 2H(26Ne,t)25Ne and 1H(26Ne,d)25Ne reactions. The (d, t) and (p, d) reactions, measured in inverse kinematics, provide spectroscopic information on the neutron single-hole states around the new N = 16 shell closure found in the Ne region. The two measurements are designed to provide a comparison of results for the neutron-rich nucleus 26Ne ( S = −12.55 MeV) obtained from the fast-beam neutron knockout reaction [5] and the transfer mechanism studied here. The details of the experimental arrangement and the data analysis, including angular distributions and spectroscopic factors, will be presented.

Abstract

Expérience GANIL; International audience; The gyromagnetic factor of the isomeric state of 43S has been measured using the Time Dependent Perturbed Angular Distribution (TDPAD) technique. The isomer was produced and spin aligned via the fragmentation of a 60 AMeV 48Ca beam at the GANIL facility. The deduced magnetic moment confirms the 7/2− spin/parity of the isomeric state and shows, for the first time, the intruder nature of the ground state. Comparison of the experimental values with Shell Model and mean-field based calculations were performed revealing a pronounced ground state deformation and a quasi-spherical isomeric state. A new isomeric state has been observed in the 42P.

Abstract

It is well known that the nuclear shell structure changes for the most exotic nuclei. One of theconsequences of this phenomenon is the modification of the "classical" magic numbers, as experimentally observed at N = 20 and N = 28. Nevertheless, the mechanisms responsible for such changesare still under discussion and more experimental information is needed to better constrain the theoretical models. In these proceedings, we report on the discovery and the experimental study by precise spectroscopy experiments of the 02+ state in 34Si and 44S. The 34Si is located between the magic spherical 36S the deformed 32Mg, member of the so-called island of inversion, whereas 44S is located between the magic spherical 48Ca and the deformed 42Si. Therefore, the structure of these nuclei, and in particular the phenomenon of shape coexistence, is of crucial importance to understand how the intruder configurations progressively dominate the ground state structure of the most exotic nuclei at both N = 20 and N = 28. Abstract

The exploration of the solar system by means of spacecraft would not be possible in its present form without the art and science of communications. Particularly exacting requirements arise in connection with the study of the planets and the interplanetary medium beyond the orbit of Jupiter. Developments in technology providing the required communication capability are partly based on the principle of the phase-locked loop as a narrow-band tracking filter. Mission objectives and performance are discussed for Pioneers 10 and 11 and Voyagers 1 and 2 which at present are the only spacecraft beyond the orbit of Jupiter. A description is given of challenges related to communication in the case of the passage of Voyager 2 near Uranus in 1986 and near Neptune in 1989, taking into account the approaches employed to meet these challenges. Attention is given to requirements concerning international cooperation regarding the ground network, the development of interagency and intra-agency arraying, and the improvement of antenna efficiency.
