Abstract

Since the early 2000s, reports of increased rates of mental ill health among young people worldwide have received much attention. Several studies indicate a greater incidence of mental health problems among tertiary students, compared with the general population, and higher levels of anxiety, in particular, among international students compared with domestic students. Australia is host to many thousands of international students of an age when mental illnesses are most likely to surface. However, this issue has received little attention from Australian researchers. This article reports on in-depth interviews with 16 professionals working with international students at an internationalized university.

AbstractTransnistria is a de-facto state located between the Moldova and Ukraine border that has been stuck in a frozen conflict with Moldova over its sovereignty for over 30 years. We conducted interviews with young people living in the region to gain an understanding of their sense of national identity, feelings of security, hopes for the future and overall wellbeing. Participants shared their views on the difficult times experienced in the region as a result of the war in neighbouring Ukraine, while also sharing on difficulties associated with securing stable employment and general economic challenges. 45. The Impact of Regional Higher Education Spaces on the Security of International Students

Abstract

The security of international students in regional higher education spaces in Australia has been overlooked. Contingency theory provides the framework for this case study to explore the organisational structure and support services relevant to a regional higher education space and how this impacts the security of international students. In-depth qualitative interviews with staff and students offer insights into the small-scale organisation of a regional campus, international students' cultural adjustment and the type and level of support available to facilitate student security in this space. This study challenges ideas that suggest international students are best served by large urban university spaces of education with top-down mechanistic administration. It is argued that the organic structure of a regional university education space is conducive to providing a high level of security for international students.

50. Bugmy in the Courtroom: Ensuring Fair and Just Outcomes for 'Profoundly Deprived' Offenders - Preliminary Findings

Abstract

In October 2023 it will be 10 years since the High Court’s judgement William David Bugmy v The Queen (Bugmy). This project undertakes an assessment of the manner in which the Victorian County Court and Victorian Supreme Court of Appeal dealt with the principles arising from the original High Court judgement. The specific purpose of the research was to apply a practical lens in examining the manner in which Bugmy applications before the Victorian County Court were dealt with. This included an assessment of 105 County Court ‘Bugmy judgements’ from 2022 and a number of related judgements of the Victorian Supreme Court of Appeal. The assessment of the 2022 Bugmy judgements assisted in identifying a number of key issues which in turn provided the focus of interviews with 15 criminal law Barristers and eight County Court judges. This research is not seeking to address the actions or initiatives that may be taken in relation to the matters raised, rather it is seeking to identify, through the views of Judges and Counsel, key matters concerning courtroom processes in dealing with Bugmy matters. In that regard, the approach taken provides a unique insight into the views of Judges and Counsel concerning their perceptions of various issues relating to ‘Bugmy in the Courtroom’. Arguably, the strongest thread of discussion throughout the interviews was the concern to ensure that Bugmy initiatives were responsive to the needs of profoundly deprived offenders. This was a matter that was evident in the discussions relating to low and high thresholds of deprivation and, it is notable that notwithstanding the different approaches, they were all focussed on ensuring that Bugmy processes were relevant and appropriate. In this regard there were strong expressions of the need for both Judges and Counsel to address what was referred to as being ‘trauma informed’. While opinions and views varied among the participants, they shared a commitment directed at developing the most effective and just sentencing framework based on the Bugmy principles.
