4. Analytic and numerical solutions to the seismic wave equation in continuous media

Abstract

This paper presents two approaches to mathematical modelling of a synthetic seismic pulse, and a comparison between them. First, a new analytical model is developed in two-dimensional Cartesian coordinates. Combined with an initial condition of sufficient symmetry, this provides a valuable check for the validity of the numerical method that follows. A particular initial condition is found which allows for a new closed-form solution. A numerical scheme is then presented which combines a spectral (Fourier) representation for displacement components and wave-speed parameters, a fourth order Runge-Kutta integration method, and an absorbing boundary layer. The resulting large system of differential equations is solved in parallel on suitable enhanced performance desktop hardware in a new software implementation. This provides an alternative approach to forward modelling of waves within isotropic media which is efficient, and tailored to rapid and flexible developments in modelling seismic structure, for example, shallow depth environmental applications. 5. Fully 3D Rayleigh-Taylor Instability in a Boussinesq Fluid

Abstract

Rayleigh-Taylor instability occurs when a heavier fluid overlies a lighter fluid, and the two seek to exchange positions under the effect of gravity. We present linearized theory for arbitrary 3D initial disturbances that grow in time, and calculate the evolution of the interface for early times. A new spectral method is introduced for the fully 3D non-linear problem in a Boussinesq fluid, where the interface between the light and heavy fluid is approximated with a smooth but rapid density change in the fluid. The results of large-scale numerical calculation are presented in fully 3D geometry, compared and contrasted with the early-time linearized theory., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures

7. A Simple and Practical Algorithm for Accurate Gravitational Magnification Maps

Abstract

In this brief communication a new method is outlined for modelling magnification patterns on an observer's plane using a first order approximation to the null geodesic path equations for a point mass lens. For each ray emitted from a source, an explicit calculation is made for the change in position on the observer's plane due to each lens mass. By counting the number of points in each small area of the observer's plane, the magnification at that point can be determined. This allows for a very simple and transparent algorithm. A short Matlab code sample for creating simple magnification maps due to multiple point lenses is included in an appendix., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. Abstract

The total magnification due to a point lens has been of particular interest as the theorem that gravitational lensing results in light amplification for all observers appears to contradict the conservation of photon number. This has been discussed several times, and various resolutions have been offered. In this note, we use a kinematic approach to provide a formula for the magnification factor for the primary image accurate to first order and valid for rays leaving the source at any trajectory. We thus determine the magnification over a sphere surrounding the system. A new result found is that while the magnification dips below unity far from the optical axis as noted by others, it returns to unity directly behind the source., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. 11. RESPONDING TO THE END-OF-LIFE OPTION ACT IN CALIFORNIA

Abstract

Abstract The legalization of physician-assisted death in California, via the End of Life Option Act, expands the possible pathways open to older adults facing the end of life. The law raises many questions, ranging from the practical to the philosophical. In order to prepare healthcare providers to care for adults who might request physician-assisted death, we invited 112 key stakeholders from across California to share their expertise in the areas of ethics, medicine, advocacy, and the law in a statewide conference. Six healthcare professionals and researchers from Oregon and Washington presented their experience with their states’ laws, and California healthcare leaders led discussions on a range of topics. The goal of the conference was to identify issues providers and healthcare systems may consider in responding to the law, in order to expand and improve end-of-life care generally. We report major themes identified by participants: (1) All healthcare systems should develop policies that reflect the values of the organization; (2) Institutions must anticipate and address the implications for vulnerable patients, such as older adults, in order to mitigate harm; (3) Institutions should create policies that account for conscientious objection and moral distress among providers; and (4) Palliative care should be an essential part of the response. The process of developing a response to the End of Life Option Act provides healthcare systems the opportunity to reflect on the law’s ethical and social implications and thereby implement system-wide changes that can benefit all patients facing the end of life.

14. A kinematical approach to gravitational lensing using new formulae for refractive index and acceleration

Abstract

This paper uses the Schwarzschild metric to derive an effective refractive index and acceleration vector that account for relativistic deflection of light rays, in an otherwise classical kinematic framework. The new refractive index and the known path equation are integrated to give accurate results for travel time and deflection angle, respectively. A new formula for coordinate acceleration is derived which describes the path of a massless test particle in the vicinity of a spherically symmetric mass density distribution. A standard ray-shooting technique is used to compare the deflection angle and time delay predicted by this new formula with the previously calculated values, and with standard first order approximations. Finally, the ray shooting method is used in theoretical examples of strong and weak lensing, reproducing known observer-plane caustic patterns for multiple masses., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, MNRAS accepted

Abstract

The ability to successfully recover coarse particles by flotation has long been seen as the area where significant step-change improvements to energy efficiency of mineral processing operations could be made. Recent developments in the field of fluidized bed flotation have introduced exciting new possibilities for coarse particle flotation. The hydrodynamic aspects of fluidized bed flotation have been a subject of many studies over the years, with many more currently underway. However, the impact of pulp chemistry within such a radically different hydrodynamic environment has not received similar attention. In flotation systems, chemistry and hydrodynamics are intricately linked, so a radical change in one, necessitates a similar change in the other. One such possibility is the use of aerosol collector addition, whereby collector reagents are introduced to a flotation system via the surfaces of bubbles rather than through the aqueous solution to the mineral particles. The concept of aerosol collector addition is not novel, but relatively poorly studied. The few studies that have focused on it have demonstrated that thermodynamically such methods result in a significant improvement in collector adsorption. However, how such a method would perform in the context of fluidized bed flotation is not known. This paper reviews the available literature on the underlying mechanisms of aerosol collector addition in flotation and how it impacts the collector coverage and resulting hydrophobicity of mineral particles. The review is performed in the context of the unique hydrodynamic environment of fluidized bed flotation of coarse particles. 27. Change in Atypical Maternal Behavior Predicts Change in Attachment Disorganization from 12 to 24 Months in a High-Risk Sample

Abstract

This longitudinal study examined links between disorganization and atypical maternal behavior at 12 and 24 months in 71 adolescent mother-child dyads. Organized attachment and maternal not disrupted behavior were more stable than disorganization and disrupted behavior, respectively. At both ages, disorganization and maternal disrupted behavior were significantly correlated. Change in atypical maternal behavior predicted change in disorganization across time. The results provide substantial support for extant theories linking anomalous maternal behavior to the development of disorganized attachment. The Interesting-but-Scary paradigm, introduced in this study, promises to be a useful tool for assessing attachment and maternal behavior in toddlerhood.

Abstract

An inclusive and socially legitimate governance structure is absent to address concerns over new agricultural biotechnologies. Establishing an agricultural bioethics commission devoted to inclusive deliberation on ethics and governance in agricultural and food biotechnology is urgent. Highlighting the social and ethical dimensions of current agricultural bioengineering disputes in the food system, we discuss how a nationally recognized policy forum could improve decision-making and increase public understanding of the issues. We clarify ways the concepts that are used to categorize food and frame governance of food affect consumer choices, and how dissemination of information and the mode of dissemination can contribute to social inequities. We cite the record of medically-oriented bioethic commissions and the history of international bioethic commissions in support of our argument, and end by discussing what such a commission dedicated to agriculture and food issues could reasonably be expected to achieve.
