The Koopman operator framework can be used to identify a data-driven model of a nonlinear system. Unfortunately, when the data is corrupted by noise, the identified model can be biased. Additionally, depending on the choice of lifting functions, the identified model can be unstable, even when the underlying system is asymptotically stable. This paper presents an approach to reduce the bias in an approximate Koopman model, and simultaneously ensure asymptotic stability, when using noisy data. Additionally, the proposed data-driven modeling approach is applicable to systems with inputs, such as a known forcing function or a control input. Specifically, bias is reduced by using a total least-squares, modified to accommodate inputs in addition to lifted inputs. To enforce asymptotic stability of the approximate Koopman model, linear matrix inequality constraints are augmented to the identification problem. The performance of the proposed method is then compared to the well-known extended dynamic mode decomposition method and to the newly introduced forward-backward extended dynamic mode decomposition method using a simulated Duffing oscillator dataset and experimental soft robot arm dataset., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures

3. Passivity-Based Gain-Scheduled Control with Scheduling Matrices

This paper considers gain-scheduling of very strictly passive (VSP) subcontrollers using scheduling matrices. The use of scheduling matrices, over scalar scheduling signals, realizes greater design freedom, which in turn can improve closed-loop performance. The form and properties of the scheduling matrices such that the overall gain-scheduled controller is VSP are explicitly discussed. The proposed gain-scheduled VSP controller is used to control a rigid two-link robot subject to model uncertainty where robust input-output stability is assured via the passivity theorem. 4. Nonlinear vortex dichroism in chiral molecules

The recent discovery that linearly polarized light with a helical wavefront can exhibit vortex dichroism (also referred to as helical dichroism) has opened up new horizons in chiroptical spectroscopy with structured chiral light. Recent experiments have now pushed optical activity with vortex beams into the regime of nonlinear optics. Here we present the theory of two-photon absorption (TPA) of focused optical vortices by chiral molecules: nonlinear vortex dichroism (NVD). We discover that highly distinct features arise in the case of TPA with focused vortex beams, including the ability to probe chiral molecular structure not accessible to current methods and that the differential rate of TPA is significantly influenced by the orientation of the state of linear polarization. This work provides strong evidence that combining nonlinear optical activity with structured light provides new and improved routes to studying molecular chirality.

5. Non-linear scattering of plane gravitational and electromagnetic waves

Fully non-linear, plane-symmetric exact solutions of the Einstein equations describing the scattering of gravitational and electromagnetic waves have existed for many years. For these closed-form solutions to be found, idealized wave profiles such as the Dirac delta and Heaviside theta functions must be assumed. Although pathological in that future curvature singularities generically occur, these exact solutions give useful insights into the non-linear features of the scattering process. Only a limited number of exact solutions exist and this leaves many other physically-motivated scattering situations without a non-linear description. The aim of this paper is to shed light on these unexplored cases. This is achieved through numerical solutions of the Friedrich-Nagy initial boundary value problem for the Einstein equations coupled to the source-free Maxwell equations in plane symmetry. Interesting non-linear scattering effects are presented for a variety of electromagnetic and gravitational wave profiles not currently described by an exact solution. Implications for electromagnetic wave observations are investigated through analyzing the time-delay and frequency shift imparted on the electromagnetic wave through the non-linear scattering with a gravitational wave of a given strain. Simple arguments supported by the numerical solutions suggest dramatic effects on the radiation may be observable., Comment: 40 pages, 22 figures

6. Demonstrating anyonic non-Abelian statistics with a minimal $d = 6$ qudit lattice

Quantum double models provide a natural framework for realising anyons by manipulating a lattice of qudits, which can be directly encoded in quantum simulators. In this work, we consider a lattice of $d=6$ qudits that give rise to $\mathbf{D}(\mathbf{S}_3)$ non-Abelian anyons. We present a method that demonstrates the non-commutativity of the braiding and fusion evolutions solely by utilising the operators that create and measure anyons. Furthermore, we provide a dense coding scheme where only two qudits are sufficient to determine the anyonic braiding and fusion matrices. The minimal resource requirement of our approach offers a viable blueprint for demonstrating the non-Abelian nature of anyons in various quantum platforms, including optical, atomic, and solid-state systems, where higher-spin states can be effectively encoded. The CO(1-0) line has been carefully calibrated as a tracer of molecular gas mass. However, recent studies often favor higher J transitions of the CO molecule which are brighter and accessible for redshift ranges where CO(1-0) is not. These lines are not perfect analogues for CO(1-0), owing to their more stringent excitation conditions, and must be calibrated for use as molecular gas tracers. Here we introduce the Arizona Molecular ISM Survey with the SMT (AMISS), a multi-CO line survey of z~0 galaxies conducted to calibrate the CO(2-1) and CO(3-2) lines. The final survey includes CO(2-1) spectra of 176 galaxies and CO(3-2) spectra for a subset of 45. We supplement these with archival CO(1-0) spectra from xCOLD GASS for all sources and additional CO(1-0) observations with the Kitt Peak 12m Telescope. Targets were selected to be representative of the galaxy population in the stellar mass range of $10^9$ to $10^{11.5}$ M$_\odot$. Our project emphasized careful characterization of statistical and systematic uncertainties to enable studies of trends in CO line ratios. We show that optical and CO disk sizes are on average equal, for both the CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) line. We measure the distribution of CO line luminosity ratios, finding medians (16th-84th percentile) of 0.71 (0.51-0.96) for the CO(2-1)-to-CO(1-0) ratio, 0.39 (0.24-0.53) for the CO(3-2)-to-CO(1-0) ratio, and 0.53 (0.41-0.74) for the CO(3-2)-to-CO(2-1) ratio. A companion paper presents our study of CO(2-1)'s applicability as a molecular gas mass tracer and search for trends in the CO(2-1)-to-CO(1-0) ratio. In this paper, we analyse the light distribution in the Hydra I cluster of galaxies to explore their low surface brightness features, measure the intra-cluster light, and address the assembly history of the cluster. For this purpose, we used deep wide-field g- and r-band images obtained with the VST as part of the VEGAS project. The VST mosaic covers ~0.4 times the virial radius around the core of the cluster, which enabled us to map the light distribution down to faint surface brightness levels of mu_g ~ 28 mag/arcsec^2. In this region of the cluster, 44 cluster members are brighter than m_B<16 mag, and the region includes more than 300 dwarf galaxies. Similar to the projected distribution of all cluster members (bright galaxies and dwarfs), we find that the bulk of the galaxy light is concentrated in the cluster core, which also emits in the X-rays, and there are two overdensities: in the north (N) and south-east (SE) with respect to the cluster core. We present the analysis of the light distribution of all the bright cluster members. After removing foreground stars and other objects, we measured the diffuse intra-cluster light and compared its distribution with that of the globular clusters and dwarf galaxies in the cluster. We find that most of the diffuse light low surface brightness features, and signs of possible gravitational interaction between galaxies reside in the core and in the group in the N, while ram-pressure stripping is frequently found to affect galaxies within the SE group. All these features confirm that the mass assembly in this cluster is still ongoing. By combining the projected phase-space with these observed properties, we trace the different stages of the assembly history. Bayesian estimation is a vital tool in robotics as it allows systems to update the belief of the robot state using incomplete information from noisy sensors. To render the state estimation problem tractable, many systems assume that the motion and measurement noise, as well as the state distribution, are all unimodal and Gaussian. However, there are numerous scenarios and systems that do not comply with these assumptions. Existing non-parametric filters that are used to model multimodal distributions have drawbacks that limit their ability to represent a diverse set of distributions. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach to nonparametric Bayesian filtering to cope with multimodal distributions using harmonic exponential distributions. This approach leverages two key insights of harmonic exponential distributions: a) the product of two distributions can be expressed as the element-wise addition of their log-likelihood Fourier coefficients, and b) the convolution of two distributions can be efficiently computed as the tensor product of their Fourier coefficients. These observations enable the development of an efficient and exact solution to the Bayes filter up to the band limit of a Fourier transform. We demonstrate our filter's superior performance compared with established nonparametric filtering methods across a range of simulated and real-world localization tasks., Comment: Preprint under review. 10. Robust Conformal Volume Estimation in 3D Medical Images

Volumetry is one of the principal downstream applications of 3D medical image segmentation, for example, to detect abnormal tissue growth or for surgery planning. Conformal Prediction is a promising framework for uncertainty quantification, providing calibrated predictive intervals associated with automatic volume measurements. However, this methodology is based on the hypothesis that calibration and test samples are exchangeable, an assumption that is in practice often violated in medical image applications. A weighted formulation of Conformal Prediction can be framed to mitigate this issue, but its empirical investigation in the medical domain is still lacking. A potential reason is that it relies on the estimation of the density ratio between the calibration and test distributions, which is likely to be intractable in scenarios involving high-dimensional data. To circumvent this, we propose an efficient approach for density ratio estimation relying on the compressed latent representations generated by the segmentation model. Our experiments demonstrate the efficiency of our approach to reduce the coverage error in the presence of covariate shifts, in both synthetic and real-world settings. Progress in machine understanding of sign languages has been slow and hampered by limited data. In this paper, we present FSboard, an American Sign Language fingerspelling dataset situated in a mobile text entry use case, collected from 147 paid and consenting Deaf signers using Pixel 4A selfie cameras in a variety of environments. Fingerspelling recognition is an incomplete solution that is only one small part of sign language translation, but it could provide some immediate benefit to Deaf/Hard of Hearing signers as more broadly capable technology develops. At >3 million characters in length and >250 hours in duration, FSboard is the largest fingerspelling recognition dataset to date by a factor of >10x. As a simple baseline, we finetune 30 Hz MediaPipe Holistic landmark inputs into ByT5-Small and achieve 11.1% Character Error Rate (CER) on a test set with unique phrases and signers. 12. Exotic Particles at the DUNE Near Detector from Charged Pion Scattering

Fixed-target proton-beam experiments produce a multitude of charged pions that rescatter in the beam dump. These charged pion scattering events can be an additional irreducible source of exotic particles which couple to photons or hadrons. We analyze the sensitivity of the DUNE Near Detector complex to millicharged particles (MCPs) and heavy axion-like particles (ALPs) with low-energy couplings to gluons. 13. Heavy-hole spin relaxation in quantum dots: Isotropic versus anisotropic effects

Non-charge based logic in single-hole spin of semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) can be controlled by anisotropic gate potentials providing a notion for making next generation solid-state quantum devices. In this study, we investigate the isotropic and anisotropic behavior of phonon mediated spin relaxation of heavy-hole spin hot spots in QDs. For the electron spin in isotropic QDs, hot spots are known to be always present due to the Rashba spin-orbit coupling. But for heavy holes in isotropic dots, we show that the occurrences of spin hot spots are sensitive to the bulk g-factor. The hot spot for Rashba coupling in InAs and GaSb dots arises because these materials possess negative bulk g-factor, while that for the Dresselhaus coupling in GaAs and InSb dots is found due to their positive bulk g-factor. For anisotropic QDs, on the other hand, the spin hot spot is universally present due to their broken in-plane rotational symmetry. Further, the increasing electric field, that strengthens the Rashba coupling, is shown to cover a wide range of magnetic field by the hot spots. Results demonstrate that the magnetic field, choice of dot materials and size anisotropy can act as effective control parameters which can be experimentally used to design the device for detecting the phonon mediated heavy-hole spin-relaxation behavior of III-V semiconductor QDs., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures

15. The Formation and Role of Social Belonging in On-Campus Integration of Diverse First-Generation College Students

- Abstract
First-generation college students (FGCS) experience high rates of attrition compared to continuing generation college students. FGCS frequently identify with several other historically marginalized identities on college campuses. The development of a sense of belonging on-campus is one of the main drivers of retention. The current study examines how sense of belonging on-campus develops during the first-year of college for different FGCS and how attitudes about on-campus relationships evolve over time. Thirteen participants were interviewed at three time points during their first year of college. Grounded theory analysis revealed four themes: 1) higher education provides a cultural learning environment; 2) multiple factors create challenges to relationship building; 3) extreme value differences create hard limits around friendships; and 4) within group friendships provide social and psychological value. Findings extend the current literature on the importance of social belonging for retention of diverse FGCS and highlight the importance of intersectionality in this work.

16. 911 Calls in Death Investigations: Indicators of Veracity and Deception

The current study examined verbal cues of veracity and deception in 911 calls reporting homicides or suicides of another person. Specifically, the current study compared differences in the presence/absence and number of potential verbal indicators between a sample of deceptive callers who concealed their role in causing the person's death and truthful callers who did not cause the person's death. Results demonstrate consistency with previously proposed indicators of veracity and deception in 911 calls. More precisely, a greater number of self-handicapping statements and descriptions of physical sensations were made by deceptive individuals, whereas truthtellers were more likely to spontaneously self-correct inaccurate statements. Practical implications and limitations are discussed.

17. 'Why Don't They Just Move Closer?': Adolescent Critical Consciousness Development in YPAR about Food Security

The aim of this paper is to explore high school students' critical consciousness development in the context of youth participatory action research (YPAR) focused on food security at an alternative school in Alabama. The YPAR project took place in an elective agriscience class with 10 students (Seven Black, two white, one Latino) who were in the 10th to 12th grades. Utilizing data from researcher notes, classroom observations, and archival classroom documents, we present students' YPAR project outcomes to share their research-driven solutions to food insecurity in their community. Vignettes of classroom dialogue are also constructed to illustrate moments of reflection in the YPAR context about food security. We present three "critical moments," or instances of social analysis, to illustrate how students' individual-level attributions occurred alongside teacher dialogue and student-led investigation of structural inequities in the community. Findings illustrate how students' nonlinear critical consciousness development consisted of reliance on individual-level attributions in classroom dialogue co-occurring with systems-thinking activities and other YPAR project outcomes. This paper has implications for research on the imperfect and wavering nature of adolescent critical consciousness development in YPAR.

18. Investigation of Bias Due to Selective Inclusion of Study Effect Estimates in Meta-Analyses of Nutrition Research

We aimed to explore, in a sample of systematic reviews (SRs) with meta-analyses of the association between food/diet and health-related outcomes, whether systematic reviewers selectively included study effect estimates in meta-analyses when multiple effect estimates were available. We randomly selected SRs of food/diet and health-related outcomes published between January 2018 and June 2019. We selected the first presented meta-analysis in each review (index meta-analysis), and extracted from study reports all study effect estimates that were eligible for inclusion in the meta-analysis. We calculated the Potential Bias Index (PBI) to quantify and test for evidence of selective inclusion. The PBI ranges from 0 to 1; values above or below 0.5 suggest selective inclusion of effect estimates more or less favourable to the intervention, respectively. We also compared the index meta-analytic estimate to the median of a randomly constructed distribution of meta-analytic estimates (i.e., the estimate expected when there is no selective inclusion). Thirty-nine SRs with 312 studies were included. The estimated PBI was 0.49 (95% CI 0.42-0.55), suggesting that the selection of study effect estimates from those reported was consistent with a process of random selection. In addition, the index meta-analytic effect estimates were similar, on average, to what we would expect to see in meta-analyses generated when there was no selective inclusion. Despite this, we recommend that systematic reviewers report the methods used to select effect estimates to include in meta-analyses, which can help readers understand the risk of selective inclusion bias in the SRs.

Pump–probe experiments with subfemtosecond resolution are the key to understanding electronic dynamics in quantum systems. Here we demonstrate the generation and control of subfemtosecond pulse pairs from a two-colour X-ray free-electron laser. By measuring the delay between the two pulses with an angular streaking diagnostic, we characterize the group velocity of the X-ray free-electron laser and show control of the pulse delay down to 270 as. We confirm the application of this technique to a pump–probe measurement in core-ionized para-aminophenol. These results reveal the ability to perform pump–probe experiments with subfemtosecond resolution and atomic site specificity.

The Tully-Fisher Relation (TFR) is a well-known empirical relationship between the luminosity of a spiral galaxy and its circular velocity, allowing us to estimate redshift independent distances. Here we use high signal-to-noise HI 21-cm integrated spectra from the second pilot data release (PDR2, 180 deg2) of the Widefield ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind surveY (WALLABY). In order to prepare for the full WALLABY survey, we have investigated the TFR in phase 2 of the pilot survey with a further three fields. The data were obtained with wide-field Phased Array Feeds on the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) and have an angular resolution of 30 arcsec and a velocity resolution of ~4 km/s. Galaxy luminosities have been measured from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), and optical galaxy inclinations from the Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey. We present TFRs for wavelengths from 0.8-3.4{\mu}m. We examine sources of galaxy inclination data and investigate magnitudes from the DECam Local Volume Exploration Survey (DELVE) and DENIS catalogues and the 4HS target catalogue based on the VISTA Hemisphere Survey (VHS). We consider the baryonic TFR. These are all of interest for TFR using the full WALLABY survey of 200,000 galaxies. Autonomous driving has experienced remarkable progress, bolstered by innovations in computational hardware and sophisticated deep learning methodologies. The foundation of these advancements rests on the availability and quality of datasets, which are crucial for the development and refinement of dependable and versatile autonomous driving algorithms. While numerous datasets have been developed to support the evolution of autonomous driving perception technologies, few offer the diversity required to thoroughly test and enhance system robustness under varied weather conditions. Many public datasets lack the comprehensive coverage of challenging weather scenarios and detailed, high-resolution data, which are critical for training and validating advanced autonomous-driving perception models. In this paper, we introduce PLT-D3; a Dynamic-weather Driving Dataset, designed specifically to enhance autonomous driving systems' adaptability to diverse weather conditions. PLT-D3 provides high-fidelity stereo depth and scene flow ground truth data generated using Unreal Engine 5. In particular, this dataset includes synchronized high-resolution stereo image sequences that replicate a wide array of dynamic weather scenarios including rain, snow, fog, and diverse lighting conditions, offering an unprecedented level of realism in simulation-based testing. The primary aim of PLT-D3 is to address the scarcity of comprehensive training and testing resources that can simulate real-world weather variations. Benchmarks have been established for several critical autonomous driving tasks using PLT-D3, such as depth estimation, optical flow and scene-flow to measure and enhance the performance of state-of-the-art models.

Structured light, light tailored in its internal degrees of freedom, has become topical in numerous quantum and classical information processing protocols. In this work, we harness the high dimensional nature of structured light modulated in the transverse spatial degree of freedom to realise an adaptable scheme for learning unitary operations. Our approach borrows from concepts in variational quantum computing, where a search or optimisation problem is mapped onto the task of finding a minimum ground state energy for a given energy/goal function. We achieve this by a pseudo-random walk procedure over the parameter space of the unitary operation, implemented with optical matrix-vector multiplication enacted on arrays of Gaussian modes by exploiting the partial Fourier transforming capabilities of a cylindrical lens in the transverse degree of freedom for the measurement. We outline the concept theoretically, and experimentally demonstrate that we are able to learn optical unitary matrices for dimensions d = 2, 4, 8 and 16 with average fidelities of >90%. Our work advances high dimensional information processing and can be adapted to both process and quantum state tomography of unknown states and channels.

23. Nonlinear Interactions of Planetary-Scale Waves in Mesospheric Winds Observed at 52{\deg}N Latitude and Two Longitudes

Nine years of mesospheric wind data from two meteor radars at 52{\deg}N latitude were analyzed to investigate planetary waves (PWs) and tides by estimating their zonal wavenumber through longitudinal phase differences. Our results reveal that PW normal modes (NMs) primarily drive multi-day oscillations, showing seasonal variability and statistical associations with Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) events. Specifically, a significant 6-day NM emerges in April, followed by predominant 4- and 2-day NMs until June, with peaks of 2-, 4-, and 6-day NMs spanning July to October. Furthermore, our study provides the first observational verification of frequency and zonal wavenumber of over ten secondary waves from nonlinear interactions among planetary-scale waves. One notable finding is the prevalence of non-migrating components in winter 24-hour and summer 8-hour tides, attributed to these nonlinear interactions. Our findings underscore the diverse nonlinear dynamics of planetary-scale waves, triggering a variety of periodic oscillations.

The integrity and precision of nuclear data are crucial for a broad spectrum of applications, from national security and nuclear reactor design to medical diagnostics, where the associated uncertainties can significantly impact outcomes. A substantial portion of uncertainty in nuclear data originates from the subjective biases in the evaluation process, a crucial phase in the nuclear data production pipeline. Recent advancements indicate that automation of certain routines can mitigate these biases, thereby standardizing the evaluation process, reducing uncertainty and enhancing reproducibility. This article contributes to developing a framework for automated evaluation techniques testing, emphasizing automated fitting methods that do not require the user to provide any prior information. This approach simplifies the process and reduces the manual effort needed in the initial evaluation stage. It highlights the capability of the framework to validate and optimize subroutines, targeting the performance analysis and optimization of the fitting procedure using high-fidelity synthetic data (labeled experimental data) and the concept of a fully controlled computational experiment. An error metric is introduced to provide a clear and intuitive measure of the fitting quality by quantifying the accuracy and performance across the specified energy. As hydrogen is touted as a key player in the decarbonization of modern society, it is critical to enable quantitative H analysis at high spatial resolution, if possible at the atomic scale. Indeed, H has a known deleterious impact on the mechanical properties (strength, ductility, toughness) of most materials that can hinder their use as part of the infrastructure of a hydrogen-based economy. Enabling H mapping, including local hydrogen concentration analyses at specific microstructural features, is essential for understanding the multiple ways that H affect the properties of materials, including for instance embrittlement mechanisms and their synergies, but also spatial mapping and quantification of hydrogen isotopes is essential to accurately predict tritium inventory of future fusion power plants, ensuring their safe and efficient operation for example. Atom probe tomography (APT) has the intrinsic capabilities for detecting hydrogen (H), and deuterium (D), and in principle the capacity for performing quantitative mapping of H within a material's microstructure. Yet the accuracy and precision of H analysis by APT remain affected by the influence of residual hydrogen from the ultra-high vacuum chamber that can obscure the signal of H from within the material, along with a complex field evaporation behavior. The present article reports the essence of discussions at a focused workshop held at the Max-Planck Institute for Sustainable Materials in April 2024. The workshop was organized to pave the way to establishing best practices in reporting APT data for the analysis of H. We first summarize the key aspects of the intricacies of H analysis by APT and propose a path for better reporting of the relevant data to support interpretation of APT-based H analysis in materials.

A number of nearby dwarf galaxies have globular cluster (GC) candidates that require spectroscopic confirmation. Here we present Keck telescope spectra for 15 known GCs and GC candidates that may be associated with a host dwarf galaxy, and an additional 3 GCs in the halo of M31 that are candidates for accretion from a now disrupted dwarf galaxy. We confirm 6 star clusters (of intermediate-to-old age) to be associated with NGC~247. The vast bulk of its GC system remains to be studied spectroscopically. We also confirm the GC candidates in F8D1 and DDO190, finding both to be young star clusters. The 3 M31 halo GCs all have radial velocities consistent with M31, are old and very metal-poor. Their ages and metallicities are consistent with accretion from a low mass satellite galaxy. Finally, three objects are found to be background galaxies -- two are projected near NGC~247 and one (candidate GCC7) is near the IKN dwarf. Empirical evidence shows stock returns are often heavy-tailed rather than normally distributed. The $\kappa$-generalised distribution, originated in the context of statistical physics by Kaniadakis, is characterised by the $\kappa$-exponential function that is asymptotically exponential for small values and asymptotically power law for large values. This proves to be a useful property and makes it a good candidate distribution for many types of quantities. In this paper we focus on fitting historic daily stock returns for the FTSE 100 and the top 100 Nasdaq stocks. Using a Monte-Carlo goodness of fit test there is evidence that the $\kappa$-generalised distribution is a good fit for a significant proportion of the 200 stock returns analysed.

In order to help facilitate the future study of ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) we compile a catalogue of their spectroscopic properties. Using it, we investigate some of the biases inherent in the current UDG sample that have been targeted for spectroscopy. In comparison to a larger sample of UDGs studied via their spectral energy distributions (SED), current spectroscopic targets are intrinsically brighter, have higher stellar mass, are larger, more globular cluster-rich, older, and have a wider spread in their metallicities. In particular, many spectroscopically studied UDGs have a significant fraction of their stellar mass contained within their globular cluster (GC) system. We also search for correlations between parameters in the catalogue. Of note is a correlation between alpha element abundance and metallicity as may be expected for a `failed galaxy' scenario. However, the expected correlations of metallicity with age are not found and it is unclear if this is evidence against a `failed galaxy' scenario or simply due to the low number statistics and the presence of outliers. Finally, we attempt to segment our catalogue into different classes using a machine learning K-means method. We find that the clustering is very weak and that it is currently not warranted to split the catalogue into multiple, distinct sub-populations. We present spatially resolved Keck Cosmic Web Imager stellar spectroscopy of the Virgo cluster dwarf galaxies VCC 9 and VCC 1448. These galaxies have similar stellar masses and large half-light radii but very different globular cluster (GC) system richness ($\sim$25 vs. $\sim$99 GCs). Using the KCWI data, we spectroscopically confirm 10 GCs associated with VCC 1448 and one GC associated with VCC 9. We make two measurements of dynamical mass for VCC 1448 based on the stellar and GC velocities respectively. VCC 1448's mass measurements suggest that it resides in a halo in better agreement with the expectation of the stellar mass -- halo mass relationship than the expectation from its large GC counts. For VCC 9, the dynamical mass we measure agrees with the expected halo mass from both relationships. We compare VCC 1448 and VCC 9 to the GC-rich galaxy Dragonfly 44 ($\sim74$ GCs), which is similar in size but has $\sim 1$ dex less stellar mass than either Virgo galaxy. In dynamical mass -- GC number space, Dragonfly 44 and VCC 1448 exhibit richer GC systems given their dynamical mass than that of VCC 9 and other `normal' galaxies. We also place the galaxies in kinematics -- ellipticity space finding evidence of an anticorrelation between rotational support and the fraction of a galaxy's stellar mass in its GC system. i.e., VCC 9 is more rotationally supported than VCC 1448, which is more rotationally supported than Dragonfly 44. {\alpha}-RuCl$_3$, a narrow-band Mott insulator with large work function, offers intriguing potential as a quantum material or as a charge acceptor for electrical contacts in van der Waals devices. In this work, we perform a systematic study of the optical reflection contrast of {\alpha}-RuCl$_3$ nanoflakes on oxidized silicon wafers and estimate the accuracy of this imaging technique to assess the crystal thickness. Via spectroscopic micro-ellipsometry measurements, we characterize the wavelength-dependent complex refractive index of {\alpha}-RuCl$_3$ nanoflakes of varying thickness in the visible and near-infrared. Building on these results, we simulate the optical contrast of {\alpha}-RuCl$_3$ nanoflakes with thicknesses below 100 nm on SiO$_2$/Si substrates under different illumination conditions. We compare the simulated optical contrast with experimental values extracted from optical microscopy images and obtain good agreement. Finally, we show that optical contrast imaging allows us to retrieve the thickness of the RuCl$_3$ nanoflakes exfoliated on an oxidized silicon substrate with a mean deviation of -0.2 nm for thicknesses below 100 nm with a standard deviation of only 1 nm. Our results demonstrate that optical contrast can be used as a non-invasive, fast, and reliable technique to estimate the {\alpha}-RuCl$_3$ thickness.

In this research, we uses the DistilBERT model to generate extractive summary and the T5 model to generate abstractive summaries. Also, we generate hybrid summaries by combining both DistilBERT and T5 models. Central to our research is the implementation of GPT-based refining process to minimize the common problem of hallucinations that happens in AI-generated summaries. We evaluate unrefined summaries and, after refining, we also assess refined summaries using a range of traditional and novel metrics, demonstrating marked improvements in the accuracy and reliability of the summaries. Willems' fundamental lemma enables a trajectory-based characterization of linear systems through data-based Hankel matrices. However, in the presence of measurement noise, we ask: Is this noisy Hankel-based model expressive enough to re-identify itself? In other words, we study the output prediction accuracy from recursively applying the same persistently exciting input sequence to the model. We find an asymptotic connection to this self-consistency question in terms of the amount of data. More importantly, we also connect this question to the depth (number of rows) of the Hankel model, showing the simple act of reconfiguring a finite dataset significantly improves accuracy. 33. A Hessian for Gaussian Mixture Likelihoods in Nonlinear Least Squares

This paper proposes a novel Hessian approximation for Maximum a Posteriori estimation problems in robotics involving Gaussian mixture likelihoods. Previous approaches manipulate the Gaussian mixture likelihood into a form that allows the problem to be represented as a nonlinear least squares (NLS) problem. The resulting Hessian approximation used within NLS solvers from these approaches neglects certain nonlinearities. The proposed Hessian approximation is derived by setting the Hessians of the Gaussian mixture component errors to zero, which is the same starting point as for the Gauss-Newton Hessian approximation for NLS, and using the chain rule to account for additional nonlinearities. The proposed Hessian approximation results in improved convergence speed and uncertainty characterization for simulated experiments,and similar performance to the state of the art on real-world experiments. 34. Mapping School-Level Language Policies across Multilingual Secondary Schools in England: An Ecology of English, Modern Languages and Community Languages Policies

Language plays a crucial role in education; yet, while issues of language are undoubtedly relevant to all teachers, school-level language policies, which aim to provide explicit guidance underpinned by a clear set of principles, are too often conspicuous by their absence. In a range of educational contexts around the world it has been found that where such policies do exist, they are frequently fragmented and underpinned by monolingual ideologies that do not reflect the linguistic diversity of schools today. The aim of this study, therefore, is to map the provision of school-level policies from a representative sample of secondary schools in England (n = 998) and explore the extent to which they address (either implicitly or explicitly) the following dimensions of language: (a) English, both as the language of instruction and in relation to support for English as an additional language (EAL) learners; (b) modern languages in the curriculum; and (c) other home or community languages. Drawing on an ecologically informed approach, where these three dimensions of language are conceptualised as systems, analysis was conducted to identify areas of divergence and (potential for) intersection. Findings suggest that policies relating to languages, where they exist, are largely compartmentalised and tensions emerged between the various systems. However, we also note several promising points of intersection which indicate that there is scope for developing cohesive and holistic languages policies at a whole-school level.

35. Stakeholder Perceptions of the Acceptability of Peer-Mediated Intervention for Minimally Speaking Preschoolers on the Autism Spectrum

Peer mediated intervention (PMI) is an evidence-based approach to supporting social and communication development for children on the autism spectrum. For PMI to be integrated into everyday practice, it needs to be acceptable to stakeholders. This article engaged with autistic individuals, early childhood educators, parents, and speech and language pathologists on the prospective acceptability of implementing PMI with minimally speaking preschoolers in inclusive preschool settings. Focus groups and semi-structured interviews were conducted. The transcriptions were analyzed qualitatively using reflexive thematic analysis. Stakeholders described PMI as an acceptable intervention approach for this population and provided valuable insights to inform the development and implementation of PMIs. Attention needs to be paid to how to support preschools to adopt a PMI-friendly philosophy.

36. Systematic Review of Distributed Practice and Retrieval Practice in Health Professions Education

To determine the effect of distributed practice (spacing out of study over time) and retrieval practice (recalling information from memory) on academic grades in health professions education and to summarise a range of interventional variables that may affect study outcomes. A systematic search of seven databases in November 2022 which were screened according to predefined inclusion criteria. The Medical Education Research Study Quality Instrument (MERSQI) and Newcastle-Ottawa Scale-Education (NOS-E) were used to critically appraise eligible articles. A summary of interventional variables includes article content type, strategy type, assessment type and delay and statistical significance. Of 1818 records retrieved, 56 were eligible for inclusion and included a total of 63 experiments. Of these studies, 43 demonstrated significant benefits of distributed practice and/or retrieval practice over control and comparison groups. Included studies averaged 12.23 out of 18 on the MERSQI and averaged 4.55 out of 6 on the NOS-E. Study designs were heterogeneous with a variety of interventions, comparison groups and assessment types. Distributed practice and retrieval practice are effective at improving academic grades in health professions education. Future study quality can be improved by validating the assessment instruments, to demonstrate the reliability of outcome measures. Increasing the number of institutions included in future studies may improve the diversity of represented study participants and may enhance study quality. Future studies should consider measuring and reporting time on task which may clarify the effectiveness of distributed practice and retrieval practice. The stakes of the assessments, which may affect student motivation and therefore outcomes, should also be considered.

We show how the decoherence that occurs in an entangling atomic spin-light interface can be simply modeled as the dynamics of a bosonic mode. Although one seeks to control the collective spin of the atomic system in the permutationally invariant (symmetric) subspace, diffuse scattering and optical pumping are local, making an exact description of the many-body state intractable. To overcome this issue we develop a generalized Holstein-Primakoff approximation for collective states which is valid when decoherence is uniform across a large atomic ensemble. Observational surveys have found that the dynamical masses of ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) correlate with the richness of their globular cluster (GC) system. This could be explained if GC-rich galaxies formed in more massive dark matter haloes. We use simulations of galaxies and their GC systems from the E-MOSAICS project to test whether the simulations reproduce such a trend. We find that GC-rich simulated galaxies in galaxy groups have enclosed masses that are consistent with the dynamical masses of observed GC-rich UDGs. However, simulated GC-poor galaxies in galaxy groups have higher enclosed masses than those observed. We argue that GC-poor UDGs with low stellar velocity dispersions are discs observed nearly face on, such that their true mass is underestimated by observations. Using the simulations, we show that galactic star-formation conditions resulting in dispersion-supported stellar systems also leads to efficient GC formation. Conversely, conditions leading to rotationally-supported discs leads to inefficient GC formation. This result may explain why early-type galaxies typically have richer GC systems than late-type galaxies. This is also supported by comparisons of stellar axis ratios and GC specific frequencies in observed dwarf galaxy samples, which show GC-rich systems are consistent with being spheroidal, while GC-poor systems are consistent with being discs. [Optics Communications $\mathbf{554}$, 130185 (2024)] claim that cylindrical vector beams (CVBs), also referred to as higher-order Poincar\'e (HOP) beams, possess optical chirality densities which exhibit `superchirality'. Here we show that, on the contrary, CVBs possess less optical chirality density than a corresponding circularly polarized scalar vortex beam and that the `superchiral' results are nonphysical. 40. On the orbit-induced spin density of tightly focused optical vortex beams: ellipticity and helicity

It has recently been established that a linearly-polarized optical vortex possesses spin angular momentum density in the direction of propagation (longitudinal spin) under tight-focusing. The helicity of light has long been associated with longitudinal spin angular momentum. Here we show that the longitudinal spin density of linearly-polarized vortices is anomalous because it has no associated helicity. It was also recently determined that the polarization-independent helicity of tightly-focused optical vortices is associated with their transverse spin momentum density. The key finding of this work is the fact that, in general, longitudinal spin can not necessarily be associated with helicity, and transverse spin is in general not associated with a zero helicity, and such extraordinary behaviour manifests most clearly for optical vortices under non-paraxial conditions.

This paper presents a data-driven method to identify an asymptotically stable Koopman system from noisy data. In particular, the proposed approach combines approximations of the system's forward- and backward-in-time dynamics to reduce bias caused by noisy data while enforcing asymptotic stability. A Koopman model of an inherently asymptotically stable system can be unstable due to noisy data and a poor choice of lifting functions. To prevent identifying an unstable model, the proposed approach imposes an asymptotic stability constraint on the Koopman model. The proposed method is formulated as a semidefinite program and its performance is compared to state-of-the-art methods with a simulated Duffing oscillator dataset and experimental soft robot dataset., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures

Bayesian inference for complex models with an intractable likelihood can be tackled using algorithms performing many calls to computer simulators. These approaches are collectively known as "simulation-based inference" (SBI). Recent SBI methods have made use of neural networks (NN) to provide approximate, yet expressive constructs for the unavailable likelihood function and the posterior distribution. However, the trade-off between accuracy and computational demand leaves much space for improvement. In this work, we propose an alternative that provides both approximations to the likelihood and the posterior distribution, using structured mixtures of probability distributions. Our approach produces accurate posterior inference when compared to state-of-the-art NN-based SBI methods, even for multimodal posteriors, while exhibiting a much smaller computational footprint. Globally, there is an increased need for guidelines to produce high-quality data outputs for analysis. No framework currently exists that provides guidelines for a comprehensive approach to producing analysis ready data (ARD). Through critically reviewing and summarising current literature, this paper proposes such guidelines for the creation of ARD. The guidelines proposed in this paper inform ten steps in the generation of ARD: ethics, project documentation, data governance, data management, data storage, data discovery and collection, data cleaning, quality assurance, metadata, and data dictionary. In this report, we introduce the Gemini 1.5 family of models, representing the next generation of highly compute-efficient multimodal models capable of recalling and reasoning over fine-grained information from millions of tokens of context, including multiple long documents and hours of video and audio. The family includes two new models: (1) an updated Gemini 1.5 Pro, which exceeds the February version on the great majority of capabilities and benchmarks; (2) Gemini 1.5 Flash, a more lightweight variant designed for efficiency with minimal regression in quality. Gemini 1.5 models achieve near-perfect recall on long-context retrieval tasks across modalities, improve the state-of-the-art in long-document QA, long-video QA and long-context ASR, and match or surpass Gemini 1.0 Ultra's state-of-the-art performance across a broad set of benchmarks. Studying the limits of Gemini 1.5's long-context ability, we find continued improvement in next-token prediction and near-perfect retrieval (>99%) up to at least 10M tokens, a generational leap over existing models such as Claude 3.0 (200k) and GPT-4 Turbo (128k). Finally, we highlight real-world use cases, such as Gemini 1.5 collaborating with professionals on completing their tasks achieving 26 to 75% time savings across 10 different job categories, as well as surprising new capabilities of large language models at the frontier; when given a grammar manual for Kalamang, a language with fewer than 200 speakers worldwide, the model learns to translate English to Kalamang at a similar level to a person who learned from the same content.

An open challenge in the context of quantum information processing and communication is improving the robustness of quantum information to environmental contributions of noise, a severe hindrance in real-world scenarios. Here, we show that quantum skyrmions and their nonlocal topological observables remain resilient to noise even as typical entanglement witnesses and measures of the state decay. This allows us to introduce the notion of digitization of quantum information based on our new discrete topological quantum observables, foregoing the need for robustness of entanglement. We compliment our experiments with a full theoretical treatment that unlocks the quantum mechanisms behind the topological behaviour, explaining why the topology leads to robustness. Our approach holds exciting promise for intrinsic quantum information resilience through topology, highly applicable to real-world systems such as global quantum networks and noisy quantum computers.

This paper introduces a set of customizable and novel cost functions that enable the user to easily specify desirable robot formations, such as a ``high-coverage'' infrastructure-inspection formation, while maintaining high relative pose estimation accuracy. The overall cost function balances the need for the robots to be close together for good ranging-based relative localization accuracy and the need for the robots to achieve specific tasks, such as minimizing the time taken to inspect a given area. The formations found by minimizing the aggregated cost function are evaluated in a coverage path planning task in simulation and experiment, where the robots localize themselves and unknown landmarks using a simultaneous localization and mapping algorithm based on the extended Kalman filter. This paper presents an invariant Rauch-Tung- Striebel (IRTS) smoother applicable to systems with states that are an element of a matrix Lie group. In particular, the extended Rauch-Tung-Striebel (RTS) smoother is adapted to work within a matrix Lie group framework. The main advantage of the invariant RTS (IRTS) smoother is that the linearization of the process and measurement models is independent of the state estimate resulting in state-estimate-independent Jacobians when certain technical requirements are met. A sample problem is considered that involves estimation of the three dimensional pose of a rigid body on SE(3), along with sensor biases. The multiplicative RTS (MRTS) smoother is also reviewed and is used as a direct comparison to the proposed IRTS smoother using experimental data. This paper presents a solution for the state estimation and control problems for a class of unconventional vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) UAVs operating in forward-flight conditions. A tightly-coupled state estimation approach is used to estimate the aircraft navigation states, sensor biases, and the wind velocity. State estimation is done within a matrix Lie group framework using the Invariant Extended Kalman Filter (IEKF), which offers several advantages compared to standard multiplicative EKFs traditionally used in aerospace and robotics problems. An SO(3)- based attitude controller is employed, leading to a single attitude control law without a separate sideslip control loop. A control allocator is used to determine how to use multiple, possibly redundant, actuators to produce the desired control moments. The wind velocity estimates are used in the attitude controller and the control allocator to improve performance. A numerical example is considered using a sample VTOL tailsitter-type UAV with four control surfaces. 49. Discovery of Globular Cluster Candidates in the Dwarf Irregular Galaxy IC 2574 Using HST/ACS Imaging

We report the discovery of 23 globular cluster (GC) candidates around the relatively isolated dwarf galaxy IC 2574 within the Messier 81 (M81) group, at a distance of 3.86 Mpc. We use observations from the HST Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) to analyse the imaging in the F814W and F555W broadband filters. Our GC candidates have luminosities ranging from $-5.9 \geq M_V \geq -10.4$ and half-light radii of $1.4 \leq r_h \leq 11.5$ pc. We find the total number of GCs ($N_{\mathrm{GC}})=27\pm5$ after applying completeness corrections, which implies a specific frequency of $S_N = 4.0\pm0.8$, consistent with expectations based on its luminosity. The GC system appears to have a bimodal colour distribution, with 30% of the GC candidates having redder colours. We also find 5 objects with extremely blue colours that could be young star clusters linked to an intense star formation episode that occurred in IC 2574 $\sim$1 Gyr ago. We make an independent measurement of the halo mass of IC 2574 from its kinematic data, which is rare for low mass galaxies, and find log $M_{200} = 10.93 \pm 0.08$. We place the galaxy on the well-known GC system mass-halo mass relation and find that it agrees well with the observed near-linear relation. IC 2574 has a rich GC population for a dwarf galaxy, which includes an unusually bright $\omega$ Cen-like GC, making it an exciting nearby laboratory for probing the peculiar efficiency of forming massive GCs in dwarf galaxies., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Laser line scanners are increasingly being used in the subsea industry for high-resolution mapping and infrastructure inspection. However, calibrating the 3D pose of the scanner relative to the vehicle is a perennial source of confusion and frustration for industrial surveyors. This work describes three novel algorithms for laser-to-vehicle extrinsic calibration using naturally occurring features. Each algorithm makes a different assumption on the quality of the vehicle trajectory estimate, enabling good calibration results in a wide range of situations. A regularization technique is used to address low-observability scenarios frequently encountered in practice with large, rotationally stable subsea vehicles.
