Abstract

A method is proposed for the identification of surfactants by ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) with high-resolution mass spectrometry detection after screening water and food samples for the total concentration of cationic and anionic surfactants by microextraction-fluorimetry. The method is based on the use of dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction with chloroform of surfactant ion pairs with organic reagents (eosin and acridine yellow), measuring the fluorescence of the obtained adducts using a smartphone, obtaining RGB colorimetric characteristics, and determining the total surfactant concentration. The main analytical characteristics of the identification of cationic surfactants (alkylpyrdinium, alkyltrimethylammonium, alkyldimethylbenzylammonium (benzalkonium), alkylmethylethylbenzylammonium, didecyldimethylammonium, benzyldimethyl[3-(myristoylamino)propyl]ammonium, N,N-bis(3-aminopropyl)dodecylamine chlorides) and anionic surfactants (alkyl benzene sulfonates (sulfonol), alkyl sulfates, laureth sulfates, alkyl sulfonates, and sodium alkyl carboxylates) by chromatography-mass spectrometry under the selected conditions of chromatographic separation and mass spectrometric detection are found. Shorebird use of horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus) eggs as food items has been well documented along the Atlantic coast of the United States at northeastern stopover sites such as the Delaware Bay. However, the relationship between migratory shorebirds and horseshoe crab eggs has not been well studied in the South Atlantic Bight. The objective of our study was to assess the spatial and temporal overlap between the density of horseshoe crab eggs and the relative abundance of foraging shorebirds during spring migration in the Cape Romain-Santee Delta Region (CRSD). South Carolina, USA. The CRSD is a site of international importance for shorebirds that supports -100,000 shorebirds annually. We also sought to determine if horseshoe crab eggs were present in the diets of shorebirds at these sites. We monitored study plots between March and June 2015-2016 at predicted horseshoe crab spawning sites on beaches throughout Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge. We conducted weekly shorebird surveys and collected core samples of beach substrate twice per month to measure densities of horseshoe crab eggs. We found a positive correlation between number of foraging shorebirds and horseshoe crab eggs for both years. In a molecular analysis of shorebird fecal samples, 95% of the samples tested contained DNA from horseshoe crab eggs. The spatial and temporal overlap between shorebirds and horseshoe crab eggs, and the dietary analysis of fecal samples, suggest that there are areas of localized horseshoe crab spawning that shorebirds can utilize as a food source during spring in Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge. With the coronavirus pandemic causing historic labor market disruptions in spring 2020 and the federal government mounting an equally historic legislative response, the American Enterprise Institute commissioned a survey of 3,518 working-age adults in late July 2020. The survey gauged families' experience of employment disruptions and hardship during the economic downturn and the role the private and public safety net played in alleviating hardship and supporting families through difficult financial circumstances. The results suggest many households experienced employment disruptions in the pandemic's immediate aftermath. More than half of working-age adults with pre-pandemic employment in the household reported at least one negative work disruption in their household such as a lost job, a furlough, or reduced work hours. Employment disruptions affected households with and without children at similar rates. However, working-age adults from lower-income households experienced the highest rates of employment disruptions and were more likely to report their income had declined in recent months. More than half of working-age adults with a job loss in their household also reported that a former employer had asked someone in the household to return to work by late July 2020. A large majority of those asked by an employer to return to work accepted the offer. Reported use of safety-net benefits, including unemployment compensation and private sources of help, suggests many vulnerable families have received financial help during the pandemic. Working-age adults from low-income households and from households with children reported the highest rates of support. The private and public safety net targeted households with children and households that had experienced employment disruptions in the wake of the pandemic particularly well. Survey results also suggest a slight majority of working-age adults believe the federal government should spend more to help people who lost jobs, low-income families, and working families. However, a majority of working-age adults also expressed concern over dependency on government benefits regardless of their pre-pandemic household income level. Overall, these results point to two major policy recommendations. First, as the US continues to battle the coronavirus, policymakers should continue the safety-net provisions that have been successful thus far, such as reasonable levels of unemployment compensation and food assistance, rather than pursue large program expansions. Second, policymakers should respond to Americans' prevailing desire for additional federal economic relief to help struggling households and design this support in a way that helps more Americans return to work as the economy recovers and the labor market improves., Over the past several months, we have witnessed the tremendous impacts of the coronavirus pandemic on US households.
