Material engineering has become one of the corner stones in various engineering applications. The scientific alteration of base materials into various inorganic and organic compounds has resulted in the development of Functionally Graded Material (FGM). FGM can be described as a cutting edge material in which the particular material's properties could be made varied as the dimension changes. The aims of this study was to review on FGM's applications and its manufacturing processes. In addition, the mathematical idealization of the FGM was also reviewed. Based on the review, since FGMs are highly heterogeneous, it can be idealized as their mechanical properties changes smoothly with respect to their spatial coordinates. Nonetheless, in order to analyze FGMS in an efficient manner, the homogenization schemes are needed to be simplified from their complicated heterogeneous microstructures. Closed-form solutions of some fundamental solid mechanics' problems can be obtained by this idealization. Conclusively, FGM is unique in relation to any of the individual materials that structures it. Suggestively, this provide a limitless possibility for future engineering applications.

Feed spacers improve mixing and mass transfer in membrane modules. However, they also lead to foulant deposition in the vicinity of the spacer surface. In this paper, two hydrophilic monomers, namely, acrylic acid (AA) and 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), are respectively coated on the surface of a commercial feed spacer via a plasma‐enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) method. The resulting modified spacers are then evaluated alongside with a reverse osmosis (RO) membrane for its solute rejection, water permeability, and antifouling properties. Results show that the surface hydrophilicity of feed spacers has been enhanced upon the AA and HEMA deposition. During filtration test, the HEMA‐modified spacer demonstrates higher flux recovery rate (94.17%) and salt rejection (95.78%) for the RO membrane. In contrast, the membrane with the unmodified spacer only shows 89.44% and 92.46%, respectively. Additionally, the membrane with the HEMA‐modified spacer has a thinner fouling layer (200 nm) compared to the unmodified spacer (700 nm). The HEMA‐coated spacer outperforms all the tested spacers, demonstrating that feed spacer modification with a hydrophilic monomer via the PECVD method can effectively reduce membrane fouling. BACKGROUND: Existing evidence suggests that proinflammatory cytokines play an intermediary role in postchemotherapy cognitive impairment. This is one of the largest multicentered, cohort studies conducted in Singapore to evaluate the prevalence and proinflammatory biomarkers associated with cognitive impairment in breast cancer patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Chemotherapy-receiving breast cancer patients (stages I-III) were recruited. Proinflammatory plasma cytokines concentrations [interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor, interferon-γ and tumor necrosis factor-α] were evaluated at 3 time points (before chemotherapy, 6 and 12 weeks after chemotherapy initiation). The FACT-Cog (version 3) was utilized to evaluate patients self-perceived cognitive disturbances and a computerized neuropsychological assessment (Headminder) was administered to evaluate patients memory, attention, response speed and processing speed. Changes of cognition throughout chemotherapy treatment were compared against the baseline. Linear mixed-effects models were applied to test the relationships of clinical variables and cytokine concentrations on self-perceived cognitive disturbances and each objective cognitive domain. RESULTS: Ninety-nine patients were included (age 50.5 ± 8.4 years; 81.8% Chinese; mean duration of education = 10.8 ± 3.3 years). Higher plasma IL-1β was associated with poorer response speed performance (estimate: -0.78; 95% confidence interval (CI) -1.34 to -0.03; P = 0.023), and a higher concentration of IL-4 was associated with better response speed performance (P = 0.022). Higher concentrations of IL-1β and IL-6 were associated with more severe self-perceived cognitive disturbances (P = 0.018 and 0.001, respectively). Patients with higher concentrations of IL-4 also reported less severe cognitive disturbances (P = 0.022). CONCLUSIONS: While elevated concentrations of IL-6 and IL-1β were observed in patients with poorer response speed performance and perceived cognitive disturbances, IL-4 may be protective against chemotherapy-associated cognitive impairment. This study is important because cytokines would potentially be mechanistic mediators of chemotherapy-associated cognitive changes.

Synthesis of high quality and quantity of graphene by cost-effective methods are highly desirable for various application. In electrochemical exfoliation, graphite foil has been used as carbon source for the synthesis of high yield of graphene flakes. Electrochemical exfoliation is one of the faster and cheaper method to synthesize graphene sheets. In this work, five different types of concentration of sulphuric acid were used for electrochemical exfoliation. The electrochemical cell design where graphite foil as anode and copper foil as cathode which were connected to DC power supply of 5V. To examine the morphology scanning electron microscope (SEM) was employed in which the sheet structures with large lateral dimension and thin graphene flakes. Furthermore, X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed that exfoliated graphene samples showed a significant peak at about 2θ = 26º corresponded to graphite. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sortase-assembled pili contribute to virulence in many Gram-positive bacteria. In Enterococcus faecalis, the endocarditis and biofilm-associated pilus (Ebp) is polymerized on the membrane by sortase C (SrtC) and attached to the cell wall by sortase A (SrtA). In the absence of SrtA, polymerized pili remain anchored to the membrane (i.e. off-pathway). Here we show that the high temperature requirement A (HtrA) bifunctional chaperone/protease of E. faecalis is a quality control system that clears aberrant off-pathway pili from the cell membrane. In the absence of HtrA and SrtA, accumulation of membrane-bound pili leads to cell envelope stress and partially induces the regulon of the ceftriaxone resistance-associated CroRS two-component system, which in turn causes hyper-piliation and cell morphology alterations. Inactivation of croR in the OG1RF ΔsrtAΔhtrA background partially restores the observed defects of the ΔsrtAΔhtrA strain, supporting a role for CroRS in the response to membrane perturbations. Moreover, absence of SrtA and HtrA decreases basal resistance of E. faecalis against cephalosporins and daptomycin. The link between HtrA, pilus biogenesis and the CroRS two-component system provides new insights into the E. faecalis response to endogenous membrane perturbations.
