Sea storm vulnerability in the coastal area of northern Marche between the mouths of Foglia and Metauro rivers has been analysed. The method used had already been applied by other authors in some areas of the northern Adriatic region and utilizes a series of different variables, in particular: present and recent morphodynamic parameters of beach and shoreface, bathymetric characteristics and pressure of use at beaches. Data were processed using GIS software. Results point to high potential vulnerability, often mitigated by coastal protection systems that are highly developed in the area. Moreover, considering the amount of exposure of different coastal sectors, it was possible to obtain risk scenarios that, in some cases, result to be high. This emphasizes the importance of extending this type of investigation to larger areas in order to get indications for long-term coastal area management, also in the context of relative sea level rise.

El estuario del río Nalón ha venido recibiendo durante los últimos 200 años un aporte continuo de materiales procedentes de actividades minero-industrial es localizadas en su cuenca hidrográfica.Como consecuencia de los aportes de metales y metaloides en diferentes fases, los sedimentos del estuario han visto incrementadas significativamente sus concentraciones en algunos elementos con respecto al fondo geoquímico natural de la zona. La aplicación al estudio de índices normalizados de referencia como el Índice de Geoacumulación o el Factor de Enriquecimiento han mostrado que a determinadas profundidades los sedimentos de las marismas presentan concentraciones especialmente elevadas en As, Pb y Zn, y estas anomalías geoquímicas se consideran atribuibles a la actividad antropogénica como fuente principal de aporte.

On the last 200 years the Nalón River estuary has been receiving a continuous apport of materials from the mining and industrial activities developed in the high and medium parts of the hydrographic basin. As consequence of the apports of heavy metals and metalloids to the hydric courses of the area in dissolved and particulate phases, some elements have significantly increased their concentrations with respect to the natural geochemical background. The study of the concentrations by means of reference normalized indices such as the Geoaccumulation Index (Igeo) and the Enrrichment Factor (FE) have pointed out that in different levels of the saltmarsh, elements such as As, Cu, Pb and Zn show concentrations which can be attributed to anthropogenic activities as main sources of apport. Specially significants are the Pb contents, where near the 50% of the analysed samples show anomalous concentrations of this metal which can be attributed to human activities.

The Nalón estuary is located in the central-southwest part of the Asturias coast line (North of Spain). This area acts as a coastal outlet for waters and sediments from the main hydrological network of the North of Spain, the Nalón watershed. In the watershed, an intense mining activity has been developed from the middle of the 19th century to the current days (e.g. coal, mercury, gold). As a consequence, significant amounts of trace metals were introduced in the river channels and transported to the estuary area. A 6 km long and meandering narrow channel characterize this estuary. Several salt-marsh areas have developed at both estuary banks. Two of these salt-marshes, not affected by land uses, were selected for this study. The aim of the present work is a preliminary assessment of the metal enrichment in the salt- marshes sediments. For this purpose, several cores were collected in the non-active parts of the salt-marshes surface. Each core was subsamples and analyzed for grain size by laser equipment, whereas the fine muddy component ( 40 cm), metals(oids) concentration remains fairly constant, thus suggesting to be suitable baseline values for the area. Considering these baseline valuesand using Titanium concentrations as normalized element, the calculated Enrichment Factor (EF) for As (up to 3.3 ), Pb (up to 116.9) and Zn (up to 3) showed that long term mining activities have significantly contributed to the metal load of the Nalón estuarine salt-marsh sediments.

Il clima influisce su differenti aspetti geomorfologici e geo-idrologici, in particolare su alcuni fortemente variabili a breve scala temporale o episodica, come le piene e le frane, ma anche su quelli a scala un po’ più lunga, come la disponibilità di risorse idriche sotterranee o la possibilità di inondazione da parte del mare. Vi è in questo campo una duplice esigenza: da un lato la necessità di inquadrare il fenomeno climatico a livello globale per stabilire le tendenze in atto e i loro legami con le cause antropiche, basandosi sul confronto di una mole di dati quanto più possibile vasta e diffusa e sull’elaborazione di modelli complessi in grado di descrivere queste variazioni e le loro relazioni. Dall’altro lato è necessario effettuare un processo di regionalizzazione e di localizzazione delle conoscenze che è indissolubilmente legato al monitoraggio e alla conoscenza di un determinato territorio nelle sue peculiarità. Non sempre questi dati sono disponibili a causa della mancanza di adeguate risorse da impiegare nelle reti di monitoraggio istituzionali o per la ricerca scientifica e non sempre, infine, studi e monitoraggi sono pianificati e coordinati in maniera corretta e i dati che ne derivano sono resi adeguatamente disponibili. La necessità di lavorare a scala regionale e locale è resa evidente dall’esigenza di attuare politiche di adattamento al cambiamento climatico che devono tener conto di ogni aspetto del territorio: fisico, geologico, naturalistico e non da ultimo socio-economico. Scopo di questo lavoro è fornire un inquadramento dello stato delle conoscenze in Friuli Venezia Giulia sui possibili impatti del cambiamento climatico sul sistema geomorfologico e idrogeologico e di fornire alcuni elementi per la definizione di strategie di adattamento di cui tener conto per una corretta pianificazione regionale e locale. I cambiamenti climatici con la loro complessa interazione con la geosfera richiederanno infatti sempre più spesso di intervenire in maniera appropriata e accuratamente progettata per pianificare e realizzare una corretta politica di gestione del territorio. Quest’ultima dovrà necessariamente trovare solide basi nelle conoscenze scientifiche attuali, ma anche essere caratterizzata da un forte e continuo legame con le informazioni derivanti dal monitoraggio del territorio, e da una inevitabile capacità di adattarsi nel tempo, in dipendenza dalla variabilità e dall’incertezza che accompagna l’evoluzione del clima.

River has been demonstrated to be still a point source of mercury (Hg) in the Gulf of Trieste (northern Adriatic sea) although the Idrija mine definitely stopped his activity in 1996, after 500 years of operation. Due to the erosion of the mining region, of the Idrijca-Isonzo river drainage basin and of the flood plains, fluvial waters remobilize and transport Hg contaminated sediments downstream to the estuarine zone and the marine environment. The present study aims at verifying the role of riverine suspended particulate matter (SPM) associated to tidal fluxes as an important way of Hg dispersion into the Grado coastal lagoon system all over the year. An annual mass-balance of particulate Hg (PHg) in the Grado lagoon was then attempted through several sampling campaigns of the water column at the corresponding tidal inlet. PHg concentrations (avg. 3.11 ± 2.62 μg g-1, d.w.), notwithstanding the ebb or flood tides, were significantly higher than the local sediment background in the Gulf (0.13 μg g-1). The relative affinity of Hg for the particulate phase in surface waters, expressed as log Kd (=[PHg]/[DHg], L kg-1), was also confirmed by higher average values (5.6–6.7) which are in agreement with those previously reported for Isonzo River freshwaters and Gulf of Trieste surface waters. PHg contents, as dry weight but also expressed by volume (ng L-1), showed the highest values in ebb tide conditions thus suggesting to be originated from the erosion of tidal flats and saltmarshes of the Grado lagoon. When compared to daily rainfalls and river discharge trends, high PHg surface concentrations in flood tide conditions are related to rainfalls events occurred within the Isonzo River basin. Results obtained from the tidal inlet can be used to make an indicative assessment of the amount of Hg bound to SPM which is transported in and out of the lagoon basin following the action of tidal fluxes. A simple estimation provides a negative sedimentary budget for the Grado lagoon basin which loses between 0.16 and 1.01 kg of PHg during a tidal semi-cycle. This conclusion is in agreement with evidences of severe morphological deterioration emerged from recent studies on the lagoon environments which testify a current sedimentary loss from the lagoon into the northern Adriatic sea.

The flow through the Grado-Marano lagoon inlets is tidally driven: more than 90% of the energy is due to the astronomical forcing [1]. The second source of variability is due to the Adriatic seiches accounting for 7% of the total kinetic energy. Local winds are responsible of the variability in the ,residual currents (tides and seiches removed). NE Bora wind increases the residual inflow into the lagoon through the easternmost inlet and favouring the outflow through the westernmost inlet. Such a behaviour is similar to what has been reported for another Northern Adriatic lagoon, namely the Venetian lagoon.

Appare opportuno riproporre un itinerario ideale attraverso la vita universitaria triestina con un volume che ne descriva, in chiave aggiornata, le innovazioni, l’articolazione strutturale, le ricerche scientifiche e le principali offerte di studio. Conoscere la Trieste accademica, con un testo anche in versione inglese, è quindi un obiettivo che ci poniamo in un’ottica di ampia diffusione del nostro ruolo culturale in un territorio vasto, che travalica i consueti confini nazionali, per estendersi alle nazioni limitrofe, all’ampio bacino danubiano, all’Europa intera, alla dimensione più propriamente internazionale e globale. D’altra parte, è noto come l’Università di Trieste sappia attrarre, da decenni, una quota sempre rilevante di studenti stranieri, certamente in virtù della sua ottimale posizione geografica, ma non solo, perché giungono, nella nostra città, giovani e studiosi provenienti ormai da tutti continenti. La città mercantile, crocevia di traffici e commerci, si può ben dire riviva oggi nella sua università e nelle altre prestigiose istituzioni scientifiche del territorio, con l’ateneo strettamente connesse, rinverdendo così una tradizione che ha sempre visto Trieste qualificato polo di attrazione dei migliori talenti culturali. L’auspicio più vivo è quindi che il lettore possa cogliere, attraverso il percorso di questo volume, affidato al dispiegarsi di idonee immagini, dati e testi illustrativi, le peculiarità più caratterizzanti di un ateneo dalle solide tradizioni, che non a caso celebra quest’anno il suo 90° anno di storia, eppure proiettato con slancio, direi molto giovanile, verso traguardi futuri di forte innovazione e cambiamento.

The water flow in two inlets of the Marano-Grado Lagoon, the second biggest lagoon in Italy, has been monitored during 2010/2011 with Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers. The flow is highly polarized along the channel axis (99% of the variance). A barotropic regime prevails along the water column; therefore the vertical average is representative of the total variability. All the major tidal constituents of the Adriatic are present in the flow, accounting for more than 90% of the total energy. Seiches account for about 80% of the non-tidal energy. Low-frequency variability is related predominantly to the non-linear wind forcing, with Bora (from NE) exerting the highest influence.
