One of the main goals of the International Energy Agency (IEA) is to manage and utilize clean energy to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. Hydropower plants can significantly contribute to this goal as they are vital components of the global energy infrastructure, providing a clean, safe, and sustainable power source. Accordingly, there is great interest in developing methods to prevent errors and anomalies and ensure full operational availability. With modern hydropower plants equipped with sensors that capture extensive data, machine learning algorithms utilizing these data to detect and predict anomalies have gained research attention. This paper demonstrates that deep learning algorithms are particularly powerful in predicting time series. Three well-known deep learning networks are examined and compared to previous approaches, followed by the introduction of a new, innovative hybrid network. Using real-world data from two hydropower plants, the hybrid model outperforms individual deep learning models by achieving more accurate fault detection, reducing false positives, offering early fault prediction, and identifying faults several weeks before occurrence. These results showcase the hybrid network's potential to enhance maintenance planning, reduce downtime, and improve operational efficiency in energy systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, a magnetic shield for automotive Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) systems is proposed. Its innovative feature consists in the positioning of the shield, that is part of the Ground Assembly (GA) of the WPT system. Passive coils, assembled in an array-like structure to build the shields properly located near the transmitting coils are investigated. Currently, there are a variety of shielding methods, each of them with its peculiar feature. The proposed method is simple and does not increase the transmitting and the receiving coil sizes, a constraint that is often critical from a practical and an economical point of view. The main characteristic of the proposed shielding method is the location of the shielding coils on the same level as the GA. The results here presented are validated by Finite Element (FE) based simulations and are referred to an experimental prototype of wireless charging systems for electric vehicles operating at 85 kHz with a transmitted nominal power of 3.3 kW. The results show that the proposed shield reduces the leakage magnetic flux density in the system up to 37% with a marginal impact on the transmission efficiency, complying the SAE J2954 international standard. The use of magnetic metasurfaces in Wireless Power Transfer systems is becoming a popular research topic: they have proven to be a valid approach to increase the performances (in terms of power transfer) and improve the overall EMC properties in terms of field emissions. In this contribution, the authors investigate the susceptibility of such systems in case of an impinging Electromagnetic Interference (that might also be intentional), evaluating different parameters for a selected set of the system's components. In particular, the worst‐case scenarios of voltage peak, energy and sharpness (where appliable) at the transmitting and receiving ports and at each capacitor of the metasurface are calculated. The results obtained for a specific system practically implemented in the lab, show that the metasurface does not necessarily decreases susceptibility towards EMI and it can be itself the most critical component. The identification of the key and critical parameters allows us to provide an insight on how metamaterials used as shielding devices should be properly designed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: This paper presents an equivalent circuit characterization of an array of resonators for wireless power transfer (WPT) applications. These apparatuses are composed of magnetically coupled resonant coils acting as a transmitter which feeds a receiver coil that can be placed over them at any position, allowing the tolerance of the system to the receiver misalignment to be dramatically enhanced. This advantage makes resonator arrays a suitable solution for both low‐ and high‐power applications. The latter usually involve battery charging, with the resonator array acting as a transformer stage, ensuring galvanic isolation. An equivalent two‐port network can be defined for any receiver position, allowing the array to be treated as a traditional transformer. Thereby, the simulation of the system can be simplified, as it is required in the design steps of a converter and control strategy. Analytical expressions of the two‐port network parameters are proposed for arrays of any size and length. The formulas have been numerically and experimentally validated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
