Despite the numerous advantages of lanthanide based luminescent thermometers, a major limitation is the limited brightness associated with the low absorption cross section of the 4f–4f transitions. In this paper, co-doping with Cr3+/4+ is proposed as a strategy to enhance the near-infrared luminescence emission of Nd3+/Er3+-based luminescent thermometers, as well as to modulate the temperature sensitivity of the ratio of Nd3+ to Er3+ in YAG microcrystals. It was found that an increase in the Cr3+ concentration leads to the enhancement of the YAG:Nd3+,Er3+ emission intensity via the Cr3+ → Ln3+ sensitization process. The quantitative analysis of the absolute brightness indicates the 30-fold enhancement of their near infrared emission upon broad white light excitation for 20% Cr3+ with respect to the non co-doped with the Cr3+ counterpart. In addition, the phonon-assisted nature of the simultaneously occurring Cr3+ → Ln3+ and Nd3+ → Cr4+ → Er3+ energy transfers leads to a 7-fold increase of the relative temperature sensitivity of the ratio of Nd3+ to Er3+ emission. In conclusion, co-doping with transition metals can enhance simultaneously the luminescence brightness and the temperature sensitivity of NIR luminescent thermometers, holding promise for sensitive and robust remote temperature sensing at physiological temperatures. We report on the synthesis, photoluminescence optimization and thermometric properties of Sr 3 Al 2 O 5 Cl 2 :Eu 2+ and SrAl 2 O 4 :Eu 2+ phosphor powders. The photoluminescence of Sr 2.9 Al 2 O 5 Cl 2 :0.1Eu 2+ phosphors exhibits a blue-shift with an increasing annealing temperature owing to a decrease in the crystal field strength of the host caused by evaporation of Cl from the material. The quenching of the blue band in favour of the red band observed in the luminescence spectra of Sr 2.9 Al 2 O 5 Cl 2 :0.1Eu 2+ with an increased annealing temperature was explained using the mechanism of the Landau-Zener transitions. The quantum yield and the lifetime of the phosphors depend on the annealing temperature. Phosphor samples annealed at 850 °C, 1000 °C, 1200 °C and 1500 °C were found to be potential luminescence thermometers using the luminescence spectral method. For Sr 3 Al 2 O 5 Cl 2 :Eu 2+ annealed at 1000 °C, the temperature-dependent dual-band intensity ratio demonstrated a high-temperature sensitivity of ∼1.47%/°C in the temperature range of 23 °C to 40 °C which is superior to other reported phosphors with a microsecond decay time, suggesting that the material has potential for sensitive thermometry applications at ambient temperatures.

This Letter introduces a new, to the best of our knowledge, particle streak velocimetry technique based on decaying streaks formed by individual phosphor particles following pulsed excitation. Tin-doped phosphor particles are dispersed into flows and excited by a pulsed UV laser light sheet. Emission streaks are recorded as a result of particle motion during the persistence of luminescence (here ∼27µ s ). The two components of the flow velocity are derived from the streaks without directional ambiguity by applying to each streak a two-dimensional fit describing a linearly moving point source with a mono-exponential decaying emission. This technique can achieve high spatial resolution compared to particle image velocimetry (PIV), while also requiring much fewer computational resources than particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) at high seeding densities. The wavelength-shifted luminescence also allows rejection of reflected laser light. The approach was validated in a free jet against simultaneous PTV and PIV and then successfully applied to measure a canonical boundary layer flow.

A new thermographic nanocrystalline Sr 4 Al 14 O 25 :Mn 4+ ,Tb 3+ phosphor was developed, and the concentrations of both dopants and the synthesis conditions were optimized. The combination of the thermally quenched luminescence from the Mn 4+ ions to the almost temperature-independent emission from Tb 3+ provides a sensitive luminescent thermometer ( S R = 2.8%/°C at 150 °C) with strong emission color variability. In addition, a figure of merit for this luminescence thermochromism was proposed, as the relative sensitivities of the x and y CIE coordinates, which for this phosphor reaches at 150 °C S R ( x ) = 0.6%/°C and S R ( y ) = 0.4%/°C, respectively. Noncontact thermal imaging was demonstrated with this phosphor using a single consumer digital camera and exploiting the ratio of red (R) and green (G) channels of the RGB images, thereby confirming the high application potential of Sr 4 Al 14 O 25 :Mn 4+ ,Tb 3+ nanocrystals for thermal sensing and mapping.

We synthesized and characterized S c V O 4 : B i 3+ thermographic phosphor particles and demonstrated their use as a tracer for temperature imaging in a near-ambient temperature liquid flow using a single laser/camera luminescence lifetime dual-frame ratio-based method. Owing to a high temperature sensitivity of up to 6%/°C, the single-shot single-pixel temperature precision at a 400 µm spatial resolution is better than ±0.4 ∘ C (1 σ ) across the 20 to 60°C range, representing a factor >5 improvement compared to previous works using thermographic phosphors. The measurement duration is on the order of the luminescence lifetime (2 µs), which is applicable in both gas and liquid flows. This is a general temperature imaging method for sensitive measurements in dynamic fluid mechanics and thermal science applications.

Simultaneous point measurements of gas velocity and temperature were recently demonstrated using thermographic phosphors as tracer particles. There, continuous wave (CW) excitation was used and the spectral shift of the luminescence was detected with a two-colour intensity ratio method to determine the gas temperature. The conventional laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) technique was employed for velocimetry. In this paper, an alternative approach to the gas temperature measurements is presented, which is instead based on the temperature-dependence of the luminescence lifetime. The phase-shift between the luminescence signal and time-modulated excitation light is evaluated for single BaMgAl 10 O 17 :Eu 2+ phosphor particles as they cross the probe volume. Luminescence lifetimes evaluated in the time domain and frequency domain indicate that in these experiments, interferences from in-phase signals such as stray excitation laser light are negligible. The dependence of the phase-shift on flow temperature is characterised. In the temperature sensitive range above 700 K, precise gas temperature measurements can be obtained (8.6 K at 840 K) with this approach.

We propose a point measurement technique for simultaneous gas temperature and velocity measurement based on thermographic phosphor particles dispersed in the fluid. The flow velocity is determined from the frequency of light scattered by BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+ phosphor particles traversing the fringes like in conventional laser Doppler velocimetry. Flow temperatures are derived using a two-color ratio method applied to the phosphorescence from the same particles. This combined diagnostic technique is demonstrated with a temperature precision of 4%-10% in a heated air jet during steady operation for flow temperatures up to 624 K. The technique provides correlated vector-scalar data at high spatial and temporal resolution.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) particles are characterised as a tracer for temperature measurements in turbulent flows, in the context of the thermographic particle image velocimetry technique. Flow measurements are used to compare the temperature precision of ZnO to that obtained using a well-characterised thermographic phosphor, BAM:Eu(2+), under the same conditions. For this two-colour, ratio-based technique the strongly temperature-dependent redshift of the luminescence emission of ZnO offers improved temperature sensitivity, and so at room temperature a threefold increase in the temperature precision is achieved. A dependence of the intensity ratio on the laser fluence is identified, and additional measurements with different laser pulse durations are used to independently show that there is also a dependence on the laser excitation irradiance, irrespective of fluence. A simple method to correct for these effects is demonstrated and sources of error are analysed in detail. Temperature images in a Re = 2000 jet of air heated to 363 K with a precision of 4 K (1.1%) are presented. The sensitivity of ZnO increases across the tested temperature range 300-500 K, so that at 500 K, using a seeding density of 2 x 10(11) particles/m(3), a precision of 3 K (0.6%) is feasible. This new phosphor extends the capabilities of this versatile technique toward the study of flows with small temperature variations.

This paper presents an optical diagnostic technique based on seeded thermographic phosphor particles, which allows the simultaneous two-dimensional measurement of gas temperature, velocity and mixture fraction in turbulent flows. The particle Mie scattering signal is recorded to determine the velocity using a conventional PIV approach and the phosphorescence emission is detected to determine the tracer temperature using a two-color method. Theoretical models presented in this work show that the temperature of small tracer particles matches the gas temperature. In addition, by seeding phosphorescent particles to one stream and non-luminescent particles to the other stream, the mixture fraction can also be determined using the phosphorescence emission intensity after conditioning for temperature. The experimental technique is described in detail and a suitable phosphor is identified based on spectroscopic investigations. The joint diagnostics are demonstrated by simultaneously measuring temperature, velocity and mixture fraction in a turbulent jet heated up to 700 K. Correlated single shots are presented with a precision of 2 to 5% and an accuracy of 2%.

Non-deployment of an L.G.M. percutaneous vena cava filter is rare. The aim of this paper is to report a new case of this complication. A second filter was inserted between the non-deployed filter and the renal veins to prevent proximal migration of the transvenous interruption device to the pulmonary artery or the right side of the heart, and to guarantee an effective prophylaxis of further pulmonary embolization. Two years later, the vena cava was still patent. The best way to avoid this accident is a perfect insertion technique: after a preoperative cavography to check diameter and patency of the vena cava, the filter must be deployed by retracting the introducer sheath while maintaining the position of the inner canula, and not pushing the filter out of the introducer sheath. A second filter must always be available in the operating room in case of incomplete opening of the filter. The use of vena cava filter is not devoid of risks. Restricted indications are therefore recommended.

A 65 old man had a solitary primary pulmonary plasmacytoma. Serum immunoelectrophoresis revealed an immunoglobulin G Lambda M-protein. Screening for multiple myeloma with bone marrow biopsy and skeletal survey were negative. The patient underwent left lower lobectomy associated with resection of mediastinal lymph nodes. Immunoperoxydase staining of the mass revealed a monoclonal plasma cell population producing IgG, Lambda chains. No adjuvant chemotherapy or radiation therapy was performed. In few weeks, the paraprotein durably disappeared. Four years later, the patient is well and has no evidence of recurrence or myelomatosis. Authors emphasize the rarity of this tumor. The best treatment of pulmonary plasmacytoma is discussed.

The authors report the cases of 13 patients with parathyroid adenomas and hyperparathyroidism. They estimate that this disease may be observed in about 70/100,000 patients hospitalised in a non-specialised medical department. In four of these patients, the disease was asymptomatic while only four patients presented with symptomatic renal stones. In five patients, immuno reactive parathyroid hormone levels were within normal limits. In contrast, nephrogenic cyclic AMP, measured in 11 patients, was found to be increased in the totality of these patients and could not be decreased by the administration of calcium. An ultrasonographic examination of the neck, performed in 11 patients, showed the adenomas in 6 patients; in three other patients they were located in the neck but measured less than 1 cm in their greater diameter and in other two patients the adenomas were located in the thymus.

The authors report a case of colitis, with anatomo-clinical confrontation, during a treatment with flucytosine. In this fatal colitis, there were neither ulcerations nor pseudo-membranes. The histological data, with significant cytonuclear lesions, were consistent with a toxic-induced disorder of protein synthesis.

In a case of anterior septal rupture complicating a transeptal myocardial infarction, the diagnosis of IVC is immediately confirmed by bidimensional Doppler with color coding. The abnormal flow and its three components are studied in multiple section planes. Incidences permitting the best visualization of the shunt are the longitudinal sections: left parasternal and apical-long axis. The parasternal short axis section only visualizes an abnormal intraventricular flow. Sweeping of the septum by caudal tilting of the probe, from an apical section of the 4 cavities, successively studies the three portions: left intraventricular, trans-septal, and right intraventricular of the abnormal flow. The size of the defect seems underestimated on bidimensional ultrasonograms as well as color Doppler. Speed, sensitivity and reliability of the color coded bidimensional Doppler, places it as the reference diagnostic test in this type of pathology. Catheterization still has a place in evaluating the severity of the shunt.
