Search

Quantum state teleportation is commonly used in designs for large-scale fault-tolerant quantum computers. Using Quantinuum's H2 trapped-ion quantum processor, we implement the first demonstration of a fault-tolerant state teleportation circuit for a quantum error correction code - in particular, the planar topological [[7,1,3]] color code, or Steane code. The circuits use up to 30 trapped ions at the physical layer qubits and employ real-time quantum error correction - decoding mid-circuit measurement of syndromes and implementing corrections during the protocol. We conduct experiments on several variations of logical teleportation circuits using both transversal gates and lattice surgery protocols. Among the many measurements we report on, we measure the logical process fidelity of the transversal teleportation circuit to be 0.975(2) and the logical process fidelity of the lattice surgery teleportation circuit to be 0.851(9). Additionally, we run a teleportation circuit that is equivalent to Knill-style quantum error correction and measure the process fidelity to be 0.989(2).

The promise of quantum computers hinges on the ability to scale to large system sizes, e.g., to run quantum computations consisting of more than 100 million operations fault-tolerantly. This in turn requires suppressing errors to levels inversely proportional to the size of the computation. As a step towards this ambitious goal, we present experiments on a trapped-ion QCCD processor where, through the use of fault-tolerant encoding and error correction, we are able to suppress logical error rates to levels below the physical error rates. In particular, we entangled logical qubits encoded in the [[7,1,3]] code with error rates 9.8 times to 500 times lower than at the physical level, and entangled logical qubits encoded in a [[12,2,4]] code with error rates 4.7 times to 800 times lower than at the physical level, depending on the judicious use of post-selection. Moreover, we demonstrate repeated error correction with the [[12,2,4]] code, with logical error rates below physical circuit baselines corresponding to repeated CNOTs, and show evidence that the error rate per error correction cycle, which consists of over 100 physical CNOTs, approaches the error rate of two physical CNOTs. These results signify an important transition from noisy intermediate scale quantum computing to reliable quantum computing, and demonstrate advanced capabilities toward large-scale fault-tolerant quantum computing., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

We describe and benchmark a new quantum charge-coupled device (QCCD) trapped-ion quantum computer based on a linear trap with periodic boundary conditions, which resembles a race track. The new system successfully incorporates several technologies crucial to future scalability, including electrode broadcasting, multi-layer RF routing, and magneto-optical trap (MOT) loading, while maintaining, and in some cases exceeding, the gate fidelities of previous QCCD systems. The system is initially operated with 32 qubits, but future upgrades will allow for more. We benchmark the performance of primitive operations, including an average state preparation and measurement error of 1.6(1)$\times 10^{-3}$, an average single-qubit gate infidelity of $2.5(3)\times 10^{-5}$, and an average two-qubit gate infidelity of $1.84(5)\times 10^{-3}$. The system-level performance of the quantum processor is assessed with mirror benchmarking, linear cross-entropy benchmarking, a quantum volume measurement of $\mathrm{QV}=2^{16}$, and the creation of 32-qubit entanglement in a GHZ state. We also tested application benchmarks including Hamiltonian simulation, QAOA, error correction on a repetition code, and dynamics simulations using qubit reuse. Metacognition, literally thinking about thinking, is a term used by cognitive psychologists to refer to our ability to monitor our own performance on cognitive tasks. The term also addresses the ability to assess level of knowledge and skill in a given domain. Behavioral and psychological researchers frequently solicit metacognitive judgments from research participants in the form of self-assessment survey items. However, evidence suggests that metacognitive judgments are often at odds with reality. The term metacognitive miscalibration is used to refer to this disparity between self-assessments and more objective measures of ability and performance. The authors have theorized a relationship between metacognitive miscalibration and underachievement in courses where many students enter the class believing they already know the material. This paper reports preliminary results from an ongoing study seeking to understand the relationship between metacognitive miscalibration and underachievement in a computer literacy course. Five figures include pretest quiz results, miscalibration and recalibration in the pretest, comparison of pretest and posttest quiz scores, comparison of improvement by recalibration group, and posttest quiz results. We present spectroscopic observations for quasars Q0107-025A, Q0107-025B, and Q0107-0232. For the first time, all data obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope's GHRS and FOS for these three quasars are combined. Ly-alpha absorbers selected from the spectra can be used to trace the coherence of the intergalactic medium (IGM) on scales of 1-2 h_{70}^{-1} Mpc over the redshift range 0.4 < z_a < 0.9. A new analysis of double and triple absorber coincidences derived from the improved spectra is performed. Automated line-selection algorithms were used to detect absorption lines in the QSO spectra; coincident absorbers were identified across two and three sight lines based on their proximity to each other in velocity space. A control simulation designed to generate artificial absorption-line spectra was used to gauge the significance of the coincidences. Four intervening metal line absorption systems are detected, with three of the four coincident to the A and B sight lines and one coincident across all three sight lines. This is evidence for substantial clustering among the objects responsible for the metal-enriched gas. By contrast, large scale coherence of the IGM gas is detectable but weak. Fewer than half of the absorbers are coincident on scales of 1-2 h_{70}^{-1} Mpc, a result that is significant at the 99% confidence level, and coherence arises preferentially in the higher column density gas. Triple absorber coincidences occur at a level that is significant at the 99% confidence level, which indicates that the higher column density gas has a planar geometry., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal. 72 pages including 13 figures and 19 tables

We present X-ray and optical analysis of 188 AGN identified from 497 hard X-ray (f (2.0-8.0 keV) > 2.7x10^-15 erg cm^-2 s^-1) sources in 20 Chandra fields (1.5 deg^2) forming part of the Chandra Multi-wavelength Project. These medium depth X-ray observations enable us to detect a representative subset of those sources responsible for the bulk of the 2-8 keV Cosmic X-ray Background. Brighter than our optical spectroscopic limit, we achieve a reasonable degree of completeness (77% of X-ray sources with counter-parts r'< 22.5 have been classified): broad emission line AGN (62%), narrow emission line galaxies (24%), absorption line galaxies (7%), stars (5%) or clusters (2%). We find that most X-ray unabsorbed AGN (NH<10^22 cm^-2) have optical properties characterized by broad emission lines and blue colors, similiar to optically-selected quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey but with a slighly broader color distribution. However, we also find a significant population of redder (g'-i'>1.0) AGN with broad optical emission lines. Most of the X-ray absorbed AGN (10^2210^22 cm^-2) and broad emission lines. Overall, we find that 81% of X-ray selected AGN can be easily interpreted in the context of current AGN unification models. For measurement of the AGN luminosity function and its evolution, X-ray selection samples all types of AGN and provides reduced obscuration bias in comparison with UV-excess or optical surveys. The apparent decline in optically-selected quasars above z~3 may be strongly affected by such a bias. The Chandra Multiwavelength Project (ChaMP) is characterizing serendipitously detected X-ray sources in a large number of fields with archival Chandra imaging. We present a preliminary measure of the co-moving space density using a sample of 311 AGN found in 23 ChaMP fields (~1.8 deg^2) supplemented with 57 X-ray bright AGN from the CDF-N and CDF-S. Within our X-ray flux (f(0.3-8.0 keV) > 4x10^-15 erg cm^-2 s^-1) and optical magnitude (r' < 22.5) limits, our sample includes 14 broad emission line AGN at z > 3. Using this X-ray selected sample, we detect a turnover in the co-moving space density of luminous type 1 AGN (log Lx > 44.5; units erg s^-1; measured in the 0.3-8.0 keV band and corrected for Galactic absorption) at z > 2.5. Our X-ray sample is the first to show a behavior similar to the well established evolution of the optical quasar luminosity function. A larger sample of high redshift AGN and with a greater fraction of identified sources, either spectroscopic or photometric, at faint optical magnitudes (r' > 22.5) are required to remove the remaining uncertainty in our measure of the X-ray luminosity function. We confirm that for z < 1, lower luminosity AGN (log Lx < 44.5) are more prevalent by more than an order of magnitude than those with high luminosity. We have combined the Chandra sample with AGN from the ROSAT surveys to present a measure of the space density of luminous type 1 AGN in the soft X-ray band (0.5-2.0 keV) which confirms the broad band turnover described above., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, 1 color figure, Expanded version accepted by ApJ

We present spectra of the optical transient (OT) associated with GRB 021004. The spectra show a blue continuum with superposed absorption features and one emission line. We confirm two intervening metal-line systems at z = 1.380 and z = 1.602 and one very strong absorption system at a redshift of z = 2.323. Ly_alpha emission is also seen at this redshift. While the spectrum of the OT overall cannot be simply described with a power law, the spectral index over the range 5500-8850 A is steep, F_nu ~ nu^(-0.96 +/- 0.03). Comparison of spectra from multiple epochs shows a distinct color evolution with the OT becoming redder with time over the first three days. An infrared-selected, narrow-line QSO has been found to exhibit an extraordinarily broad Halpha emission line in polarized light. Both the extreme width (35,000 km/sec full-width at zero intensity) and 3,000 km/sec redshift of the line centroid with respect to the systemic velocity suggest emission in a deep gravitational potential. An extremely red polarized continuum and partial scattering of the narrow lines at a position angle common to the broad-line emission imply extensive obscuration, with few unimpeded lines of sight to the nucleus., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, to appear in the Astrophysical Journal Letters

We report on the analysis of a large sample of 744 type 1 Active Galactic Nuclei, including quasars and Seyfert 1 galaxies across the redshift range from 0 < z < 5 and spanning nearly 6 orders of magnitude in continuum luminosity. We discuss correlations of continuum and emission line properties in the rest-frame ultraviolet and optical spectral ranges. The well established Baldwin Effect is detected for almost all emission lines from OVI1034 to [OIII]5007. Their equivalent widths are significantly anti-correlated with the continuum strength, while they are nearly independent of redshift. This is the well known Baldwin Effect. Its slope beta, measured as log W_lambda ~ beta * log lambda * L_lambda (1450A), shows a tendency to become steeper towards higher luminosity. The slope of the Baldwin Effect also increases with the ionization energy needed to create the individual lines. In contrast to this general trend, the NV1240 equivalent width is nearly independent of continuum luminosity and remains nearly constant. The overall line behaviors are consistent with softer UV continuum shapes and perhaps increasing gas metallicity in more luminous Active Galactic Nuclei., Comment: 42 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ, added another co-author

We present spectroscopic observations with Keck/LRIS of LBQS 0015+0239, a pair of quasars at z = 2.45 with a separation of $\Delta\theta = 2.2$ arcsec (projected linear distance of 17.8 $h_{70}^{-1}$ kpc, for $\Omega_m = 0.3$, $\Lambda = 0.7$). Lensing is an unlikely interpretation for the images, since the spectra show significant differences in the NV and CIV emission line profiles, and there is no luminous galaxy at the anticipated lens position. Rather, we interpret this pair as the highest redshift known example of a binary quasar. The redshift difference of 661+/-173 km/s between the two components is inconsistent with the lensing expectation, but is consistent with the line of sight velocity difference of a bound pair of galaxies. The spectra show associated, narrow metal absorption in highly ionized species of C and N, with a systemic velocity difference of 492+/-6 km/s. It is likely that this absorption arises in a group or cluster of galaxies surrounding the quasar pair. After a thorough search, the Large Bright Quasar Survey (LBQS) is known to contain one gravitational lens and four probable binary pairs. The existence of close binaries is evidence that quasar activity can be triggered by galaxy interactions. We present the results of our monitoring of the halo black-hole soft X-ray transient (SXT) XTE J1118+480 during its decline to quiescence. The system has decayed 0.5 mags from December 2000 to its present near quiescent level at R=18.65 (June 2001). The ellipsoidal lightcurve is distorted by an additional modulation that we interpret as a superhump of P_sh=0.17049(1) d i.e. 0.3% longer than the orbital period. This implies a disc precession period P_prec= 52 d. After correcting the average phase-folded light curve for veiling, the amplitude difference between the minima suggests that the binary inclination angle lies in the range i=71-82 deg. However, we urge caution in the interpretation of these values because of residual systematic contamination of the ellipsoidal lightcurve by the complex form of the superhump modulation. The orbital--mean H-alpha profiles exhibit clear velocity variations with ~500 km/s amplitude. The results of the N/O abundance determination in a sample of low-metallicity blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies based on new spectroscopic observations with large telescopes (Keck, VLT, MMT, 4m KPNO) are presented. We present the results of spectrophotometry and V,R,I, Halpha CCD photometry of the blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy SBS 0940+544. Broad-band images taken with the 2.1m KPNO and 1.23m Calar Alto telescopes reveal a compact high-surface-brightness H II region with ongoing star formation, located at the northwestern tip of the elongated low surface brightness (LSB) main body of the BCD. High signal-to-noise 4.5m Multiple Mirror Telescope (MMT) and 10m Keck II telescope long-slit spectroscopy of SBS 0940+544 is used to derive element abundances of the ionized gas in the brightest H II region and to study the stellar population in the host galaxy. The oxygen abundance in the brightest region with strong emission lines is 12+log(O/H) = 7.46-7.50, or 1/29-1/26 solar, in agreement with earlier determinations and among the lowest for BCDs. Hbeta and Halpha emission lines and Hdelta and Hgamma absorption lines are detected in a large part of the main body. Three methods are used to put constraints on the age of the stellar population at different positions along the major axis. They are based on (a) the equivalent widths of the emission lines, (b) the equivalent widths of the absorption lines and (c) the spectral energy distributions (SED). Several scenarios of star formation have been considered. The observed properties in the main body can be reproduced by a continuous star formation process which started not earlier than 100 Myr ago, if a small extinction is assumed. However, the observations can be reproduced equally well by a stellar population forming continuously since 10 Gyr ago, if the star formation rate has increased during the last 100 Myr in the main body of SBS 0940+544 by at least a factor of five. Long-slit Keck II, 4m Kitt Peak, and 4.5m MMT spectrophotometric data are used to investigate the stellar population and the evolutionary status of I Zw 18C, the faint C component of the nearby blue compact dwarf galaxy I Zw 18. Hydrogen H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$ emission lines are detected in the spectra of I Zw 18C, implying that ionizing massive stars are present. High signal-to-noise Keck II spectra of different regions in I Zw 18C reveal H$\gamma$, H$\delta$ and higher order hydrogen lines in absorption. Several techniques are used to constrain the age of the stellar population in I Zw 18C. Ages derived from two different methods, one based on the equivalent widths of the H$\alpha$, H$\beta$ emission lines and the other on H$\gamma$, H$\delta$ absorption lines are consistent with a 15 Myr instantaneous burst model. We find that a small extinction in the range $A_V$ = 0.20 -- 0.65 mag is needed to fit the observed spectral energy distribution of I Zw 18C with that model. In the case of constant star formation, all observed properties are consistent with stars forming continuously between ~ 10 Myr and < 100 Myr ago. We use all available observational constraints for I Zw 18C, including those obtained from Hubble Space Telescope color-magnitude diagrams, to argue that the distance to I Zw 18 should be as high as ~ 15 Mpc. The deep spectra also reveal extended ionized gas emission around I Zw 18. H$\alpha$ emission is detected as far as 30" from it. To a B surface brightness limit of ~ 27 mag arcsec$^{-2}$ we find no observational evidence for extended stellar emission in the outermost regions, at distances > 15" from I Zw 18., Comment: 38 pages, 11 Postscript figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We discuss new high-resolution (6.7 km/s) spectra of the associated absorption lines (AALs) in the radio-loud quasar 3C 191. The measured AALs have ionizations ranging from Mg I to N V, and multi-component profiles that are blueshifted by ~400 to ~1400 km/s relative to the quasar's broad emission lines. Excited-state absorption lines of Si II* and C II* imply volume densities of ~300 cm^-3 and a nominal distance from the quasar of 28 kpc (assuming photoionization). The total column density is N_H ~ 2 x 10^20 cm^-2. Surprisingly, the absorber only partially covers the quasar emission source along our line of sight. We propose a model for the absorber in which pockets of dense neutral gas are surrounded by bigger clouds of generally lower density and higher ionization. This outflowing material might be leftover from a blowout associated with a nuclear starburst, the onset of quasar activity, or a past broad absorption line (BAL) wind phase., Comment: 6 pages with embedded figures. Optical spectra were obtained of the optical counterpart of the high latitude soft X-ray transient XTE J1118+480 near its quiescent state with the new 6.5 m MMT and the 4.2 m WHT. The spectrum exhibits broad, double-peaked, emission lines of hydrogen from an accretion disk superposed with absorption lines of a K7V-M0V secondary star. Cross-correlation of the 27 individual spectra with late-type stellar template spectra reveals a sinusoidal variation in radial velocity with amplitude K = 701 +/- 10 km/s and orbital period P = 0.169930 +/- 0.000004 d. The mass function, 6.1 +/- 0.3 solar masses, is a firm lower limit on the mass of the compact object and strongly implies that it is a black hole. Photometric observations (R-band) with the IAC 0.8 m telescope reveal ellipsoidal light variations of full amplitude 0.2 mag. Modeling gives a large mass ratio (M1/M2 ~ 20) and a high orbital inclination (i = 81 +/- 2 deg). Our combined fits yield a mass of the black hole in the range M1 = 6.0-7.7 solar masses (90% confidence) for plausible secondary star masses of M2 = 0.09-0.5 solar masses. The photometric period measured during the outburst is 0.5% longer than our orbital period and probably reflects superhump modulations as observed in some other soft X-ray transients. The estimated distance is d = 1.9 +/- 0.4 kpc corresponding to a height of 1.7 +/- 0.4 kpc above the Galactic plane. The launch of the Chandra X-ray Observatory in July 1999 opened a new era in X-ray astronomy. Its unprecedented, <0.5" spatial resolution and low background are providing views of the X-ray sky 10-100 times fainter than previously possible. We have initiated a serendipitous survey (ChaMP) using Chandra archival data to flux limits covering the range between those reached by current satellites and those of the small area Chandra deep surveys. We estimate the survey will cover ~5 sq.deg./year to X-ray fluxes (2-10 keV) in the range 1E(-13)-6E(-16) erg/cm^2/s discovering ~2000 new X-ray sources, ~80% of which are expected to be AGN. The ChaMP has two parts, the extragalactic survey (ChaMP) and the galactic plane survey (ChaMPlane). ChaMP promises profoundly new science return on a number of key questions at the current frontier of many areas of astronomy including (1) locating and studying high redshift clusters and so constraining cosmological parameters (2) defining the true population of AGN, including those that are absorbed, and so constraining the accretion history of the universe, (3) filling in the gap in the luminosity/redshift plane between Chandra deep and previous surveys in studying the CXRB, (4) studying coronal emission from late-type stars and (5) search for CVs and quiescent Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (qLXMBs) to measure their luminosity functions. Associated absorption lines (AALs) are valuable probes of the gaseous environments near quasars. Here we discuss high-resolution (6.7 km/s) spectra of the AALs in the radio-loud quasar 3C 191 (redshift z=1.956). The measured AALs have ionizations ranging from Mg I to N V, and multi-component profiles that are blueshifted by ~400 to ~1400 km/s relative to the quasar's broad emission lines. These data yield the following new results. 1) The density based on Si II*/Si II lines is ~300 cm-3, implying a distance of ~28 kpc from the quasar if the gas is photoionized. 2) The characteristic flow time is thus \~3 x 10^7 yr. 3) Strong Mg I AALs identify neutral gas with very low ionization parameter and high density. We estimate n_H > 5 x 10^4 cm-3 in this region, compared to ~15 cm-3 where the N V lines form. 4) The total column density is N_H < 4 x 10^18 cm-2 in the neutral gas and N_H ~ 2 x 10^20 cm-2 in the moderately ionized regions. 5) The total mass in the AAL outflow is M ~ 2 x 10^9 Mo, assuming a global covering factor (as viewed from the quasar) of ~10% >. 6) The absorbing gas only partially covers the background light source(s) along our line(s) of sight, requiring absorption in small clouds or filaments <0.01 pc across. The ratio N_H/n_H implies that the clouds have radial (line- of-sight) thicknesses <0.2 pc. These properties might characterize a sub-class of AALs that are physically related to quasars but form at large distances. We propose a model for the absorber in which pockets of dense neutral gas are surrounded by larger clouds of generally lower density and higher ionization. We have obtained follow-up observations of the quasar pair LBQS 0107-025A,B and new observations of the nearby quasar LBQS 0107-0232 with the Hubble Space Telescope Faint Object Spectrograph. Extended wavelength coverage of LBQS 0107-025A and B using the G270H grating was also obtained. This triple system is unique in providing sensitivity to coherent Ly-alpha absorption on transverse scales of approximately 1 Mpc at z < 1. Monte Carlo simulations were used to establish the confidence level for matches between absorption features in different lines of sight as a function of velocity separation. Pairwise, there are 8, 9, and 12 lines that match between spectra. Three instances of matches between all three lines of sight were found with velocity separations of less than 550 kms^-1. Two of the pairings have coincident lines within |Delta v| < 200 kms^-1 that would occur with less than 10% probability by chance. Taking into account the equivalent widths of the lines, one of these triple coincidences is significant at the 99.99% confidence level, based on Monte Carlo simulations with random line placements. Matches with strong lines preferentially have small velocity separations. These same simulations are used to demonstrate that the distribution of matches for a population of absorbers randomly distributed in velocity space is peaked toward |Delta v| = 0, which has implications for the statistical significance of matches. One of the triple coincidences appears to be a strong absorber with a sheet-like, but inhomogeneous, geometry and a coherence length approaching or exceeding 1 Mpc., Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We have used the VLA FIRST survey and the APM catalog of the POSS-I plates as the basis for constructing a new radio-selected sample of optically bright quasars. This is the first radio-selected sample that is competitive in size with current optically selected quasar surveys. Using only two basic criteria, radio-optical positional coincidence and optical morphology, quasars and BL Lacs can be identified with 60% selection efficiency; the efficiency increases to 70% for objects fainter than magnitude 17. We show that a more sophisticated selection scheme can predict with better than 85% reliability which candidates will turn out to be quasars. This paper presents the second installment of the FIRST Bright Quasar Survey with a catalog of 636 quasars distributed over 2682 square degrees. The quasar sample is characterized and all spectra are displayed. The FBQS detects both radio-loud and radio-quiet quasars out to a redshift z>3. We find a large population of objects of intermediate radio-loudness; there is no evidence in our sample for a bimodal distribution of radio characteristics. The longstanding question of the extent to which the quasar population is affected by dust extinction, within host galaxies or galaxies along the line of sight, remains open. More generally, the spectral energy distributions of quasars vary significantly and flux-limited samples defined at different wavelengths include different quasars. Surveys employing flux measurements at widely separated wavelengths are necessary to characterise fully the spectral properties of the quasar population. The availability of panoramic near-infrared detectors on large telescopes provides the opportunity to undertake surveys capable of establishing the importance of extinction by dust on the observed population of quasars. We introduce an efficient method for selecting K-band, flux-limited samples of quasars, termed ``KX'' by analogy with the UVX method. This method exploits the difference between the power-law nature of quasar spectra and the convex spectra of stars: quasars are relatively brighter than stars at both short wavelengths (the UVX method) and long wavelengths (the KX method). We consider the feasibility of undertaking a large-area KX survey for damped Ly-alpha galaxies and gravitational lenses using the planned UKIRT wide-field near-infrared camera., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, to appear in MNRAS

We present high-quality spectroscopic observations of the two most-metal deficient blue compact galaxies known, I Zw 18 and SBS 0335-052 to determine the helium abundance. The underlying stellar absorption strongly influences the observed intensities of He I emission lines in the brightest NW component of I Zw 18, and hence this component should not be used for primordial He abundance determination. The effect of underlying stellar absorption, though present, is much smaller in the SE component. Assuming all systematic uncertainties are negligible, the He mass fraction derived in this component is Y = 0.243+/-0.007. The high signal-to-noise ratio spectrum (> 100 in the continuum) of SBS 0335-052 allows us to measure the helium mass fraction with a precision better than 2% -- 5% in nine different regions along the slit. Assuming all systematic uncertainties are negligible, the weighted mean He mass fraction in SBS 0335-052 is Y = 0.2437+/-0.0014 when the three He I 4471, 5876 and 6678 emission lines are used, and is 0.2463+/-0.0015 when the He I 4471 emission line is excluded. The weighted mean helium mass fraction in the two most metal-deficient BCGs I Zw 18 and SBS 0335-052, Y=0.2462+/-0.0015, after correction for the stellar He production results in a primordial He mass fraction Yp = 0.2452+/-0.0015. The derived Yp leads to a baryon-to-photon ratio of (4.7+/-1.0) 10^{-10}, consistent with the values derived from the primordial D and 7Li abundances, and supporting the standard big bang nucleosynthesis theory. For the most consistent set of primordial D, 4He, and 7Li abundances we derive an equivalent number of light neutrino species 3.0+/-0.3 (95% C.L.)., Comment: 28 pages, 10 figures. To appear in ApJ

Hubble Space Telescope (HST) colour - magnitude diagrams in B, V and R along with long-slit Multiple Mirror Telescope (MMT) spectrophotometric data are used to investigate the evolutionary status of the nearby blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy I Zw 18. We find that the distance to I Zw 18 should be as high as 20 Mpc, twice the previously accepted distance, to be consistent with existing observational data on the galaxy: colour-magnitude diagrams, the high ionization state of the gas and presence of WR stars in the main body, and the ionization state of the C component. The spectral energy distribution (SED) of the main body of I Zw 18 is consistent with that of a stellar population with age < 5 Myr. However, the presence of large-scale shells observed around the main body suggests that star formation began ~ 20 Myr at the NW end and propagated in the SE direction. Our analysis of colour-magnitude diagrams and of the spectral energy distribution of the C component implies that star formation in this component started < 100 Myr ago at the NW end, propagated to the SE and stopped ~ 15 Myr ago. Thus, I Zw 18 is likely to be one of the youngest nearby extragalactic objects., Comment: 14 pages, 9 Postscript figures

We use Multiple Mirror Telescope (MMT) spectrophotometry and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Faint Object Spectrograph (FOS) spectra and Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) V and I images to study the properties and evolutionary status of the nearby (D = 11.4 Mpc) extremely metal-deficient blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy SBS 1415+437=CG 389. The oxygen abundance in the galaxy is 12+log(O/H)=7.60+/-0.01 or Zsun/21. The helium mass fraction in SBS 1415+437 is Y=0.246+/-0.004 which agrees with the primordial helium abundance determined by Izotov & Thuan using a much larger sample of BCDs. The alpha-elements-to-oxygen abundance ratios (Ne/O, S/O, Ar/O) are in very good agreement with the mean values for other metal-deficient BCDs and are consistent with the scenario that these elements are made in massive stars. The Fe/O abundance ratio is ~2 times smaller than the solar ratio. The Si/O ratio is close to the solar value, implying that silicon is not significantly depleted into dust grains. The values of the N/O and C/O ratios imply that intermediate-mass stars have not had time to evolve in SBS 1415+437 and release their nucleosynthesis products and that both N and C in the BCD have been made by massive stars only. This sets an upper limit of ~100 Myr on the age of SBS 1415+437. The (V-I) color of the low-surface-brightness component of the galaxy is blue (<0.4 mag) indicative of a very young underlying stellar population. The (V-I) - I color-magnitude diagrams of the resolved stellar populations in different regions of SBS 1415+437 suggest propagating star formation from the NE side of the galaxy to the SW. All regions in SBS 1415+437 possess very blue spectral energy distributions (SED). We present Multiple Mirror Telescope (MMT) and Keck II telescope spectrophotometry and 3.5m Calar Alto telescope R, I photometry of the western component of the extremely low-metallicity blue compact galaxy SBS 0335-052. The components, separated by 22 kpc, appear to be members of a unique, physically connected system. It is shown that SBS 0335-052W consists of at least three stellar clusters and has the same redshift as SBS 0335-052. The oxygen abundance in its two brightest knots is extremely low, 12+log(O/H)= 7.22+/-0.03 and 7.13+/-0.08, respectively. These values are lower than in SBS 0335-052 and are nearly the same as those in I Zw 18. The (R-I) color profiles are very blue in both galaxies due to the combined effects of ionized gas and a young stellar population emission. We have obtained H-band spectra of 32 luminous quasars at 2.095%) differences between the rest-frame optical emission line properties of the BALQSO and nonBALQSO subsamples. This result is consistent with the view that all RQQs have broad-absorption-line clouds with a small (~10-20%) covering factor and that differences between the two types are merely a function of viewing angle and covering factor. We present both photometry and spectra of the individual images of the quadruple gravitational lens system Q2237+0305. Comparison of spectra obtained at two epochs, separated by $\sim~3\,$years, shows evidence for significant changes in the emission line to continuum ratio of the strong ultraviolet CIV~$\lambda$1549, CIII]~$\lambda$1909 and MgII~$\lambda$2798 lines. The short, $\sim~1\,$day, light--travel time differences between the sight lines to the four individual quasar images rule out any explanation based on intrinsic variability of the source. The spectroscopic differences thus represent direct detection of microlensing--induced spectroscopic differences in a quasar. The observations allow constraints to be placed on the relative spatial scales in the nucleus of the quasar, with the ultra--violet continuum arising in a region of $\la~0.05~{\rm pc}$ in extent, while the broad emission line material is distributed on scales much greater than this., Comment: Accepted for Publication in MNRAS. The (R-I) color profiles are very blue in both galaxies due to the combined effect of ionized gas and a young stellar population. We argue that SBS 0335--052W is likely to be a nearby young dwarf galaxy with age not exceeding 10^8 yr. The results of Multiple Mirror Telescope spectrophotometry of the extremely low-metallicity blue compact galaxy (BCG) SBS 0335-052 are presented. The oxygen abundance in central brightest part of the galaxy is found to be 12 + log(O/H) = 7.33+-0.01. The N/O, Ne/O, S/O and Ar/O abundance ratios are close to those derived in other BCGs, suggesting that heavy element enrichment in the HII region is due to massive star evolution. We detect auroral [OIII] 4363 emission in the inner part of HII region with a diameter of 3.6 kpc and find that the HII region inside this diameter is hot, T_e~20000K. The oxygen abundance in this region is nearly constant (12 + log(O/H) = 7.1 - 7.3), implying effective mixing of ionized gas on short time-scales. We also discuss the origin of blue underlying extended low-intensity emission detected in SBS 0335-052. The (V-I) and (R-I) color distributions suggest that a significant contribution to the extended envelope is due to ionized gas emission. However, the observed equivalent width of Hbeta emission in the extended envelope is 2-3 times lower than the value expected in the case of pure gaseous emission. These findings suggest that, along with the blue young (~10^7yr) stellar clusters, an older stellar population with age ~10^8yr may be present in the extended envelope of SBS 0335-052, having a total mass conclude that SBS 0335-052 is a young nearby dwarf galaxy with age ~10^8 yr., Comment: 27 pages and 8 Postscript figures, uses aaspp4.sty.
