Abstract Background Magnesium is a micronutrient and an intracellular cation responsible for different biochemical reactions involved in energy production and storage, control of neuronal and vasomotor activity, cardiac excitability, and muscle contraction. Magnesium deficiency may result in impaired physical performance. Moreover, magnesium plays an important role on delayed onset muscle soreness after training. Thus, physically active individuals and sport specialists have to pay attention to magnesium supplementation (MgS). However, the type, timing and dosage of magnesium intake are not well elucidated yet. Hence, we aimed to systematically review the literature regarding the effects of MgS on muscle soreness in physically active individuals. We focused exclusively on MgS, excluding those studies in which magnesium was administered together with other substances. Methods Three electronic databases and literature sources (PUBMED, SCOPUS and Web of Sciences-Core Collection) were searched, in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. After the database search, 1254 articles were identified, and after excluding duplicates, 960 articles remained. Among these, 955 were excluded following the title and abstract screening. The remaining 5 articles were screened in full text and 4 study met the eligibility criteria. Results These studies showed that MgS reduced muscle soreness, improved performance, recovery and induced a protective effect on muscle damage. Conclusion To reach these positive effects, individuals engaged in intense exercise should have a Mg requirement 10–20% higher than sedentary people, to be taken in capsules and 2 h before training. Moreover, it is suggested to maintain magnesium levels in the recommended range during the off-season. Systematic review registration PROSPERO registration number: CRD42024501822.

Abstract In this paper, a framework based on a sparse Mixture of Experts (MoE) architecture is proposed for the federated learning and application of a distributed classification model in domains (like cybersecurity and healthcare) where different parties of the federation store different subsets of features for a number of data instances. The framework is designed to limit the risk of information leakage and computation/communication costs in both model training (through data sampling) and application (leveraging the conditional-computation abilities of sparse MoEs). Experiments on real data have shown the proposed approach to ensure a better balance between efficiency and model accuracy, compared to other VFL-based solutions. Notably, in a real-life cybersecurity case study focused on malware classification (the KronoDroid dataset), the proposed method surpasses competitors even though it utilizes only 50% and 75% of the training set, which is fully utilized by the other approaches in the competition. This method achieves reductions in the rate of false positives by 16.9% and 18.2%, respectively, and also delivers satisfactory results on the other evaluation metrics. These results showcase our framework’s potential to significantly enhance cybersecurity threat detection and prevention in a collaborative yet secure manner.

Whole-body vibration (WBV) is a widely used training method to increase muscle strength and power. However, its working mechanisms are still poorly understood, and studies investigating the effects of WBV on muscle stiffness are scant. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the acute effects of WBV on stiffness and countermovement jump (CMJ). Twenty-four recreationally active males, on separate days and in random order, performed a static squat under two different conditions: with WBV (WBV) or without vibration (CC). Muscle stiffness was assessed through the Wartenberg pendulum test, and CMJ was recorded. RM-ANOVA was employed to test differences between conditions in the above-mentioned variables. In the CC condition, stiffness was significantly lower after the exposure to the static squat (p = 0.006), whereas no difference was observed after the exposure to WBV. WBV and CC did not affect CMJ. No significant correlation was observed between changes in CMJ and changes in stiffness. Our results show that WBV may mitigate the reduction in muscle stiffness observed after static squats. However, current results do not support the notion that WBV exposure may account for an increase in CMJ performance.

Whole-body vibration (WBV) has been employed for performance-enhancing purposes. WBV may positively affect muscular endurance and its underlying neural mechanisms due to an enhanced muscular blood circulation and oxygen uptake. However, the effects of WBV on endurance-related torque signal complexity have been understudied. This study aims to investigate the acute effects of WBV on i) maximal isometric torque production; ii) isometric knee extensors fatigability and iii) torque signal complexity during an isometric endurance task.Thirty adult males performed an isometric intermittent endurance protocol on their dominant lower limb after performing: static half squat with WBV (WBV), static half squat without WBV (HS), and no exercise protocol (CC). For each repetition the maximal torque was identified. The maximal torque of the first repetition was identified as the PeakT. Abstract Background Diagnosis of acute otitis media (AOM) in children can be challenging, given that symptoms are often non-specific or absent, and that the direct observation of the tympanic membrane in its entirety through otoscopy can sometimes be difficult. The aim of this study is to assess the diagnostic concordance in detection of AOM episodes between primary care paediatricians and physicians especially trained in paediatric otoscopy, and to characterize the most misleading elements in diagnostic failure. Methods Consecutive clinical charts of children regularly followed for recurrent AOM (RAOM, i.e.: >3 episodes in 6 months or > 4 episodes in 1 year) at our Otitis Media paediatric outpatient clinic were retrospectively screened, in order to collect any diagnosis of AOM episode (and the related clinical findings/middle ear complaints) performed by primary care paediatricians/emergency room paediatricians. Diagnosis of AOM episode was validated by the same experienced physician (FF) in case of otoscopic relief of a bulging eardrum with at least one of the following: hyperaemia or yellow-like colour. The diagnostic concordance in detection of AOM episodes between primary care/emergency room paediatricians and our internal validator was expressed as the percentage of matching diagnosis. Results One hundred and thirty-four single AOM episodes occurring in 87 children (mean age: 26.9 +/- 18.9 months) were included in the analysis. Diagnostic concordance in detection of AOM episodes between primary care/emergency room paediatricians and our internal validator was reported in 72.4% of cases. The most common pitfall found in our study was the misleading diagnosis of AOM in case of hyperaemic tympanic membrane without bulging (32/37 out of non-validated diagnoses). Conclusions AOM diagnosis still represents a relevant issue among paediatricians in our country, and the presence of tympanic membrane hyperaemia without concomitant bulging can be confusing.

ABSTRACTThe north-eastern border of CA represents the accretionary system developed during its continuous collision with Apulian block. The tardive oblique tectonic component is highlighted by pervasive NW-SE crustal transpressive left-lateral strike slip faults developed from the Upper Miocene to Quaternary tectonic stages. The seismotectonic and landslides Main Map represents the update of the main faults, the style of their arrangement and kinematics, the seismotectonic features and landslide area distribution with risk implications. Seismotectonics allows us to recognise a vertical crustal zonation with the distribution of earthquakes and their focal mechanism solution. The prevalent modality of ruptures depicts a mainly transcurrent and compressive solution in mid-lower crust portions respectively. This data, together with the historical seismicity analysis of the area, lead to consider the NW-SE strike-slip faults improved on the Main Map, as recent and tectonically active. The areal distribution of landslide and susceptibility of the area is due to the interaction between seismotectonic peculiarity, lithological typologies and fault zone architectures. Landslides and flood phenomena of this sector involve many municipalities, major and minor infrastructures and economic and social activities. The landslides and the faults have been identified, mapped and classified, originally at detail scale and, then, represented at 1:50,000 scale in the Main Map, included as supplementary material. The geo-structural and geomorphological data were analysed in a geographic information system allowing data management and implementation. The work presents an updated knowledge framework of risk conditions of the study zone, available to plan and reduce the fundamental elements that determine the landslide and seismic risks in this region.

IntroductionPrior investigations into post-COVID dysautonomia often lacked control groups or compared affected individuals solely to healthy volunteers. In addition, no data on the follow-up of patients with SARS-CoV-2-related autonomic imbalance are available.MethodsIn this study, we conducted a comprehensive clinical and functional follow-up on healthcare workers (HCWs) with former mild COVID-19 (group 1, n = 67), to delineate the trajectory of post-acute autonomic imbalance, we previously detected in a case–control study. Additionally, we assessed HCWs for which a test before SARS-CoV-2 infection was available (group 2, n = 29), who later contracted SARS-CoV-2, aiming to validate findings from our prior case–control investigation. We evaluated autonomic nervous system heart modulation by means of time and frequency domain heart rate variability analysis (HRV) in HCWs during health surveillance visits. Short-term electrocardiogram (ECG) recordings, were obtained at about 6, 13 months and both at 6 and 13 months from the negative SARS-CoV-2 naso-pharyngeal swab (NPS) for group 1 and at about 1-month from the negative NPS for group 2. HCWs who used drugs, had comorbidities that affected HRV, or were hospitalized with severe COVID-19 were excluded.ResultsGroup 1 was split into three subgroups clinically and functionally followed at, about 6 months (subgroup-A, n = 17), 13 months (subgroup-B, n = 37) and both at 6 and 13 months (subgroup-C, n = 13) from the negative SARS-CoV-2 NPS. In subgroup-A, at 6-month follow-up compared with baseline, the spectral components in the frequency domain HRV parameters, showed an increase in normalized high frequency power (nHF) (t = 2.99, p = 0.009), a decrease in the normalized low frequency power (nLF) (t = 2.98, p = 0.009) and in the LF/HF ratio (t = 3.13, p = 0.006). In subgroup B, the comparison of the spectral components in the frequency domain HRV parameters, at 13-month follow-up compared with baseline, showed an increase in nHF (t = 2.54, p = 0.02); a decrease in nLF (t = 2.62, p = 0.01) and in the LF/HF ratio (t = 4.00, p = 0.0003). In subgroup-C, at both 6 and 13-month follow-ups, the spectral components in the frequency domain HRV parameters were higher than baseline in nHF (t = 2.64, p = 0.02 and (t = 2.13, p = 0.05, respectively); lower in nLF (t = 2.64, p = 0.02 and (t = 2.13, p = 0.05, respectively), and in LF/HF (t = 1.92, p = 0.08 and (t = 2.43, p = 0.03, respectively). A significant proportion of HCWs reported persistent COVID-19 symptoms at both the 6 and 13-month follow-ups, seemingly unrelated to cardiac autonomic balance. In group 2 HCWs, at 1-month follow-up compared with baseline, the spectral components in the frequency domain HRV parameters, showed a decrease in nHF (t = 2.19, p = 0.04); an increase in nLF (t = 2.15, p = 0.04) and in LF/HF (t = 3.49, p = 0.002).ConclusionThese results are consistent with epidemiological data suggesting a higher risk of acute cardiovascular complications during the first 30 days after COVID-19. The SARS-CoV-2 associated autonomic imbalance in the post-acute phase after recovery of mild COVID-19 resolved 6 months after the first negative SARS-CoV-2 NPS. However, a significant proportion of HCWs reported long-term COVID-19 symptoms, which dot not seems to be related to cardiac autonomic balance. Future research should certainly further test whether autonomic imbalance has a role in the mechanisms of long-COVID syndrome.

IntroductionAxonal plasticity is strongly related to neuronal development as well as regeneration. It was recently demonstrated that active mechanical tension, intended as an extrinsic factor, is a valid contribution to the modulation of axonal plasticity.MethodsIn previous publications, our team validated a the “nano-pulling” method used to apply mechanical forces to developing axons of isolated primary neurons using magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) actuated by static magnetic fields. This method was found to promote axon growth and synaptic maturation. Here, we explore the use of nano-pulling as an extrinsic factor to promote axon regeneration in a neuronal tissue explant.ResultsWhole dorsal root ganglia (DRG) were thus dissected from a mouse spinal cord, incubated with MNPs, and then stretched. We found that particles were able to penetrate the ganglion and thus become localised both in the somas and in sprouting axons. Our results highlight that nano-pulling doubles the regeneration rate, and this is accompanied by an increase in the arborizing capacity of axons, an accumulation of cellular organelles related to mass addition (endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria) and pre-synaptic proteins with respect to spontaneous regeneration. In line with the previous results on isolated hippocampal neurons, we observed that this process is coupled to an increase in the density of stable microtubules and activation of local translation.DiscussionOur data demonstrate that nano-pulling enhances axon regeneration in whole spinal ganglia exposed to MNPs and external magnetic fields. These preliminary data represent an encouraging starting point for proposing nano-pulling as a biophysical tool for the design of novel therapies based on the use of force as an extrinsic factor for promoting nerve regeneration.

Current sampling methods for detecting the presence of the invasive freshwater hydrozoan Craspedacusta sowerbii rely mainly on visual confirmation of the medusa stage. Confirming the presence of the polyp stage is equally important for observing medusae since typical late summer/early fall occurrences or observations of medusae are sporadic though are becoming more frequent. The polyp stage is important as it is the organism’s primary stage and is present throughout the year depending on water temperatures. Therefore, sampling methods for the polyp stage are, commonly, the collection of substrates such as rocks, plants, or pieces of wood in a given body of water, and these can be cumbersome to examine. Polyps are also small, transparent, and difficult to see on natural substrates. Based on a preliminary culturing of the polyp stage on glass and plastic microscope slides in the laboratory, we designed a sampling methodology based on submerging four substrate types (glass and plastic microscope slides, Hester-Dendy discs, and small glass Petri dishes) to confirm the presence of C. sowerbii polyps in the field. We tested this method in three lakes in the Illinois–Indiana region (USA). Two of the lakes have recorded sightings of medusae but the third has no record of polyps or medusae. The sampling method we designed was effective in that C. sowerbii polyps were found on both plastic and glass slides. While this method can be sufficient for detection of the polyp stage, it also shows potential for improvement; we highlight abiotic and biotic ecological parameters as significant factors influencing the collection of C. sowerbii polyps to be considered for future methodologies.

Background: Vitamin D deficiency is associated with several obstetric complications in singleton pregnancy. The aim of this study was to assess whether vitamin D levels affect the outcomes of twin pregnancy and if targeted supplementation can improve perinatal outcomes. Methods: The serum vitamin D levels of 143 women with twin pregnancies were measured during their first trimester. Those with insufficient (10–30 ng/mL; IL group) or severely deficient (30 ng/mL, SL group) since the beginning of pregnancy. Results: Women in the IL and DL groups had a higher incidence of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) compared to the SL group (24.8% and 27.8% vs. 12.5%, p = 0.045): OR = 1.58 for the IL group and 1.94 for the DL group compared to the SL group. In patients whose vitamin D levels were restored after supplementation, HDP incidence was lower than in patients who remained in the IL or DL groups (23.4% vs. 27.3%) but higher than those who were always in the SL group (12.5%). Conclusions: Insufficient or severely deficient levels of vitamin D in the first trimester are associated with an increased risk of HDP in twin pregnancy. The beneficial effect of targeted vitamin D supplementation in reducing HDP seems limited.

This study analysed the acute effects of whole-body vibration (WBV) on quadriceps isometric muscular endurance. Fifteen healthy middle-aged males performed an endurance isometric strength test after three different warm-up conditions: static half squat plus WBV (HSV), static half squat without WBV (HS), and control condition (CC). The endurance isometric strength test consisted of 10 maximal isometric contractions held for 4 s and interspersed by 2 s of rest between each repetition. Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) was assessed after warm-up (RPE1) and at the end of the testing session (RPE2). During each testing session, participant’s heart rate (HR) was continuously recorded. For each trial, the mean force across the 10 repetitions and fatigue index were evaluated. Mean force was significantly higher (p < 0.01) in CC than in the other two conditions. Both RPE1 and RPE2 were significantly lower (p < 0.01) in CC than HSV and HS condition. Warm-up HR and the mean testing session HR were significantly lower in CC than the other two conditions (p < 0.01). No significant differences were observed in fatigue index between conditions (p > 0.05) or in HR during the endurance protocol. Performing half-squat with or without vibration stimuli does not increase isometric muscular endurance and does not influence fatigue index.
