Digital technologies are the main driver of the future economy, with technology jobs and those requiring digital skills on the rise. In educational settings, there is an accelerated propagation of digital learning environments, which was amplified by the online shift following COVID-19. To equip learners with the necessary digital skills, there ought to be a purpose-built framework that can be used as a reference point. Although in recent years there were multiple attempts to develop digital literacy frameworks such as DigComp by the European Commission and the Digital Literacy Global Framework (DLGF) by UNESCO, with several other frameworks built on top of them, there is a lack of frameworks devised specifically for learners and students. This paper proposes a conceptual digital literacy framework for learners, building mainly on DigComp 2.0 and the DLGF. We use an integrative review methodology of six main empirical frameworks, developed in recent years with educational applications, to achieve our aim. We added new competencies specific to mobile learning environments and career-related digital endeavors by learners. In addition, we further tailored the competences related to device and software operations to both personal computers and mobile devices. The proposed framework in this paper expounds on DigComp and DLGF by adding several competences which are deemed essential for learners in today's digital world. The framework can be used by educational institutes, policymakers, as well as learners to assess their digital skills and devise strategies for capacity building.

The majority of Pasifika students at the University of Otago come from other parts of New Zealand and have to adapt to studying and living in an environment that does not have a strong Pacific culture. These changes potentially affect their education experience and academic performance. Students may form social networks through religious institutions or student associations. Using a brief (10-15 minute) survey, we investigated how religiosity, social provision, and social anxiety as ethnic minorities are associated with perceived academic stress among Pasifika students in our department. We recruited 54 Pasifika students from a cohort of 101 students: 20 male, 33 female, and 1 akava'ine. Male students had higher academic stresses related to academic expectation than female students. Religiosity, social provision, and avoiding interaction with New Zealand European people were all associated with perceived academic stress in our cohort. Students preferred seeking social support from Pasifika friends and family members, and academic support from academic staff, tutorials organised by the University's Pacific Islands Centre, and friends. In conclusion, social factors are associated with academic stress of Pasifika students in the University of Otago. Institutions need to establish strong support infrastructure for ethnic minority students as they may have additional stressors which may affect their study.

Abstract This article examines how environmental awareness, stakeholder pressure, circular economy orientation and internal barriers influence circular economy practices in international and non-international micro-firms. For this, we utilised fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) using data from 128 micro firms operating in different manufacturing industries in Estonia. Three paths were identified for explaining circular economy practices in internationally operating micro-firms and two paths for explaining it in micro-firms that do not operate internationally. Our results show that understanding the impact of the four before-mentioned aspects can be beneficial for engaging in circular economy efforts in both international and non-international micro-firms. The intricate five pathways (three for international and two for non-international) through which environmental awareness, stakeholder pressure, circular economy orientation, and internal barriers shape circular economy practices in micro-firms, challenging conventional understandings and offering nuanced insights for effective engagement in sustainable business practices. Based on the findings, theoretical and practical implications of this study and directions for future research are discussed.

Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) is an environmental phenomenon that is being experienced by mining companies in Ghana. High levels of heavy metals have been reported in mining areas especially in Obuasi over the years; however, as to whether these heavy metals are being released from the mine wastes (waste rocks) is of concern. Therefore, this paper evaluates the potential of the abandoned Anyankyirem waste rock dump located in Obuasi to cause AMD. Twenty rock samples were collected from various locations of the dump site and their elemental and physicochemical compositions were examined. XRD analysis was conducted to assess the mineralogy of the samples. Acid Base Accounting (ABA) test was used to ascertain the AMD potential of the dump. The ABA test comprises calculating the Acid Neutralization Capacity (ANC) and Maximum Potential Acidity (MPA) of the various samples. The MPA and ANC values were used to compute the rock samples' Net Neutralization Potential (NNP). A column leaching test was carried out. Leachates were collected over a period of 20 weeks. From the column leaching experiment, the rate of weathering of calcium carbonate throughout the 20-week leaching experiment was 3.6 %. Leachates from the column test showed a circumneutral pH (7.1–8.0). The sulphate concentrations from the leachates decreased over the entire period from 96.60 to 3.70 mg/L. Iron recorded the highest concentration of 7783.65 mg kg-1 and the lowest of 0.645 mg kg-1 was recorded in Bi. From ABA test and the column leaching test results, Anyankyirem waste rock dump is not acid generating and therefore can serve as buffer for high pyrite waste rocks. However, significant levels of some heavy metals (As, Fe, Zn, Cr, Mn and Se) were recorded in the leachates even though the leachates’ pH were circumneutral. The results suggest that not only acidic conditions can leach out heavy metals.

In a democracy, political parties play significant roles in candidate recruitment and selection. While several activities of political parties focusing on boosting women's representation in Ghana's Fourth Republic have been examined in the literature, this study expands that discussion. It notes that political parties have pursued various strategies to increase women's political representation; however, after three decades of Ghana's Fourth Republic, parliamentary seats occupied by women fall short of the minimum 30 percent level suggested by the UN Economic and Social Council resolution 1990/15. This suggests that perhaps Ghana is not doing enough. Using a qualitative research approach, this study argues that political parties must pursue women's recruitment with greater proactiveness from the basic unit of their political structure, the polling station or branch executives' level. Abstract We aimed to determine SARS-CoV-2 antibody seropositivity among pregnant women and the transplacental transfer efficiency of SARS-CoV-2-specific antibodies relative to malaria antibodies among SARS-CoV-2 seropositive mother-cord pairs. This cross-sectional study was conducted in Accra, Ghana, from March to May 2022. Antigen- specific IgG antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 (nucleoprotein and spike-receptor binding domain) and malarial antigens (circumsporozoite protein and merozoite surface protein 3) in maternal and cord plasma were measured by ELISA. Plasma from both vaccinated and unvaccinated pregnant women were tested for neutralizing antibodies using commercial kit. Of the unvaccinated pregnant women tested, 58.12% at antenatal clinics and 55.56% at the delivery wards were seropositive for both SARS-CoV-2 nucleoprotein and RBD antibodies. Past studies have established cell division as a difficult topic in the Nigerian senior school system. While the lecture method has been used over time to overcome the challenges relative to students' understanding of cell division, a deficit in the literature is whether or not cultural teaching methodologies would help students' understanding of the concept. This study aims at testing the potency of the Culturo-Techno-Contextual Approach (CTCA) in enhancing students' understanding of cell division. The study is anchored on Vygotsky's sociocultural theory, Nkrumah's ethnophilosophy, and Heidegger's techno-philosophy. The quasi-experimental study had 26 students from the Feranmi Comprehensive High School (control group), with 21 students from the Royal Priesthood Secondary School (experimental group). The results showed that the experimental group (Mean = 33.29 and SD = 2.37) significantly outperformed the control group (Mean = 23.19 and SD = 4.92) in cell division [F (1, 44) = 137.19; p<0.05].

Purpose: Corporate governance and its training in universities have become an essential addition to the educational curriculum. Despite its expansion, students still need help to grasp some concepts, affecting their academic performance. This paper examines the expected influence of gender and school libraries on comprehending corporate governance concepts in Ghanaian universities. Design/methodology/approach: With the culturo-techno-contextual approach (CTCA) as the underlying theory, the study sampled 1050 undergraduate students from the selected Ghanaian public universities. The study adopted a quantitative approach, and the data were analysed using descriptive statistics and ANOVA. Findings: The results show a statistically significant difference between male and female Ghanaian students in their understanding of corporate governance concepts, with the mean figures suggesting that males slightly understand corporate governance concepts more than females. The results also show a statistically significant difference among Ghanaian students studying using school libraries of varying quality in their understanding of corporate governance. Originality/value: This study's novelty stems from examining the corporate governance curriculum in a developing country from the perspectives of gender and school library. Adopting the CTCA components in analysing school libraries and gender further evidences the study's novelty.

This study investigated the historical and future wave power potential in the Gulf of Guinea (GoG) with the aim of identifying high-density wave energy locations for potential exploitation. To estimate wave power density (WPD) for three time periods (past: 1979–2005, mid-century: 2026–2050, and end-century: 2081–2100), we utilized significant wave height and mean wave period obtained from eight General Circulation Models. Using an ensemble of these WAVEWATCH III simulated datasets, we calculated WPD and assessed overall and seasonal trends, projecting changes under Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios. Results revealed higher potential WPD in the western GoG, particularly near the coast, with increased values offshore. Spatially, WPD change rates varied widely (−0.021 to 0.039 kW/m per year), suggesting both positive and negative trends, though generally low. Projections indicated a potential increase from 0.5 to 1.0 kW/m by the end of the century. The estimated potential power for harvesting exceeded 14,000 MW, with offshore regions showing better wave converter performance. This study concludes that GoG's wave energy is a promising renewable resource, offering a potential solution to future power needs and contributing to regional greenhouse gas emission mitigation.

The COVID 19 pandemic continues to cause a lot of uncertainty around the world. At the onset of the pandemic, governments responded with policies and programs to curb its devastating effects on citizens, and Ghana was no exception. Although the Ghanaian government introduced various stop-gap measures to mitigate the effects of the pandemic, the inadequacies of the extant social welfare system was badly exposed. Consequently, as the pandemic seethed on, there were calls for reform of the existing social protection system and the introduction of new programs, especially for those in the informal sector. In response, the government introduced a new National Unemployment Insurance Scheme (NUIS). How did this happen? What led the government to accept tentatively the need to reform and transform the social welfare system after years of policy padding and the dragging of feet? Drawing on Kingdon's Multiple Streams Framework, we argue that the pandemic created a policy window, which enabled policy enntrepreneurs to push the unemployment insurance idea to reform the existing social welfare system. The introduction of a NUIS, is seen as a paradigm shift in social protection and more broadly in social policy. The objective of this paper is to examine how the NUIS got on government's agenda, and whether the NUIS is a game changer in social protection in Ghana. Abstract Today, the most effective and suitable method to obtain molecular H2 is the extraction from mixtures where it is present, using gas‐sieving membranes. To this aim, the preparation and characterization of layered nano‐composites are described, made of alternated layers of positively charged Poly(Diallyl Dimethyl Ammonium chloride) (PDDA) and negatively charged graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets with high and tunable selectivity for H2 purification. The composites are assembled exploiting electrostatic interactions and the layer‐by‐layer technique; this study correlates permeance tests with changes in chemical composition and structure of the material using X‐rays Photoelectron Spectroscopy, X‐rays diffraction water contact angle, and surface zeta‐potential measurements. Thanks to its layered nature, the GO‐PDDA composite shows an excellent selectivity, allowing faster permeation of H2 as compared to CO2 and Argon. By transforming the GO to reduced GO, the porosity of the nanosheets can be further increased, in this way increasing the permeance of the material and its selectivity at the same time, thus allowing to overcome the Robeson limit, the technological upper boundary to the performance of actual membranes.
