In recent years, there has been an extraordinary surge of interest in achieving a greater understanding of the needs of children and adolescents with Asperger syndrome and high-functioning autism, and with this increase in attention, research has provided a range of directions with respect to treatment guidelines. However, there is also a need for empirically supported evidence that can guide parents and professionals in their choices for educational programming for this unique population. A summary of the principal conclusions that can be drawn from the current treatment efficacy research is provided along with practical issues related to navigating the intervention literature, and directions for future research in this field.

Purpose: This study evaluated the effects of phosphate coating of acid-etched titanium on the mineral apposition rate (MAR) and new bone-to-implant contact (BIC) in a canine model. Materials and Methods: Titanium implants (2.2 × 4 mm) with acid-etched surfaces that were electrolytically phosphated or not were placed in 48 mandibular sites in six foxhounds. Tetracycline and calcein dyes were administered 1 week after implant placement and 1 week before sacrifice. At 12 weeks after implant placement, the animals were sacrificed. MAR and BIC were evaluated using fluorescence microscopy. Light microscopic and histologic evaluations were performed on undecalcified sections. Results: Microscopic evaluation showed the presence of healthy osteoblasts lining bone surfaces near implants. Similar BIC was observed in phosphated and nonphosphated titanium implant sites. MAR was significantly higher around the nonphosphated titanium implant surfaces than around the phosphated titanium samples. No significant differences were found between dogs or implant sites. Conclusion: Acid-etched implants showed significantly higher MARs compared to acid-etched, phosphate-coated implants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND: As resources into gynecological surgical simulation training increase, research showing an association with improved clinical outcomes is needed. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between surgical simulation training for total laparoscopic hysterec-tomy (TLH) and rates of intraoperative vascular/visceral injury (primary outcome) and operative time. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched Medline OVID, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane, and CINAHL databases from the inception of each database to April 5, 2022. SELECTION CRITERA: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or cohort studies of any size published in English prior to April 4, 2022. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: The summary measures were reported as relative risks (RR) or as mean differences (MD) with 95% confidence intervals using the random effects model of DerSimonian and Laird. A Higgins I2 >0% was used to identify heterogeneity. We assessed risk of bias using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool 2.0 (for RCTs) and the Newcastle Ottawa Scale (for cohort studies). MAIN RESULTS: The primary outcome of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the impact of simulation training on the rates of vessel/visceral injury in patients undergoing TLH. Of 989 studies screened 3 (2 cohort studies, 1 randomized controlled trial) met the eligibility criteria for analysis. There was no difference in vessel/visceral injury (OR 1.73, 95% CI 0.53-5.69, p=0.36) and operative time (MD 13.28, 95% CI -6.26 to 32.82, p=0.18) when comparing before and after simulation training. CONCLUSION: There is limited evidence that simulation improves clinical outcomes for patients undergoing TLH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
