The task of policy compliance detection (PCD) is to determine if a scenario is in compliance with respect to a set of written policies. In a conversational setting, the results of PCD can indicate if clarifying questions must be asked to determine compliance status. Existing approaches usually claim to have reasoning capabilities that are latent or require a large amount of annotated data. In this work, we propose logical decomposition for policy compliance (LDPC): a neuro-symbolic framework to detect policy compliance using large language models (LLMs) in a few-shot setting. By selecting only a few exemplars alongside recently developed prompting techniques, we demonstrate that our approach soundly reasons about policy compliance conversations by extracting sub-questions to be answered, assigning truth values from contextual information, and explicitly producing a set of logic statements from the given policies. The formulation of explicit logic graphs can in turn help answer PCDrelated questions with increased transparency and explainability. We apply this approach to the popular PCD and conversational machine reading benchmark, ShARC, and show competitive performance with no task-specific finetuning. We also leverage the inherently interpretable architecture of LDPC to understand where errors occur, revealing ambiguities in the ShARC dataset and highlighting the challenges involved with reasoning for conversational question answering.

In many industrial settings, users wish to ask questions whose answers may be found in structured data sources such as a spreadsheets, databases, APIs, or combinations thereof. Often, the user doesn't know how to identify or access the right data source. This problem is compounded even further if multiple (and potentially siloed) data sources must be assembled to derive the answer. Recently, various Text-to-SQL applications that leverage Large Language Models (LLMs) have addressed some of these problems by enabling users to ask questions in natural language. However, these applications remain impractical in realistic industrial settings because they fail to cope with the data source heterogeneity that typifies such environments. In this paper, we address heterogeneity by introducing the siwarex platform, which enables seamless natural language access to both databases and APIs. To demonstrate the effectiveness of siwarex, we extend the popular Spider dataset and benchmark by replacing some of its tables by data retrieval APIs. We find that siwarex does a good job of coping with data source heterogeneity. Our modified Spider benchmark will soon be available to the research community

Autonomous, goal-driven agents powered by LLMs have recently emerged as promising tools for solving challenging problems without the need for task-specific finetuned models that can be expensive to procure. Currently, the design and implementation of such agents is ad hoc, as the wide variety of tasks that LLM-based agents may be applied to naturally means there can be no one-size-fits-all approach to agent design. In this work we aim to alleviate the difficulty of designing and implementing new agents by proposing a minimalistic generation framework that simplifies the process of building agents. The framework we introduce allows the user to define desired agent behaviors in a high-level, declarative specification that is then used to construct a decoding monitor which guarantees the LLM will produce an output exhibiting the desired behavior. Our declarative approach, in which the behavior is described without concern for how it should be implemented or enforced, enables rapid design, implementation, and experimentation with different LLM-based agents. We demonstrate how the proposed framework can be used to implement recent LLM-based agents (e.g., ReACT), and show how the flexibility of our approach can be leveraged to define a new agent with more complex behavior, the Plan-Act-Summarize-Solve (PASS) agent. In this paper, we present a comprehensive analysis of extreme temperature patterns using emerging statistical machine learning techniques. Our research focuses on exploring and comparing the effectiveness of various statistical models for climate time series forecasting. The models considered include Auto-Regressive Integrated Moving Average, Exponential Smoothing, Multilayer Perceptrons, and Gaussian Processes. We apply these methods to climate time series data from five most populated U.S. cities, utilizing Python and Julia to demonstrate the role of statistical computing in understanding climate change and its impacts. Our findings highlight the differences between the statistical methods and identify Multilayer Perceptrons as the most effective approach. Additionally, we project extreme temperatures using this best-performing method, up to 2030, and examine whether the temperature changes are greater than zero, thereby testing a hypothesis., Comment: 13 pages, 4 large figures

Text-based reinforcement learning agents have predominantly been neural network-based models with embeddings-based representation, learning uninterpretable policies that often do not generalize well to unseen games. On the other hand, neuro-symbolic methods, specifically those that leverage an intermediate formal representation, are gaining significant attention in language understanding tasks. This is because of their advantages ranging from inherent interpretability, the lesser requirement of training data, and being generalizable in scenarios with unseen data. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a modular, NEuro-Symbolic Textual Agent (NESTA) that combines a generic semantic parser with a rule induction system to learn abstract interpretable rules as policies. Our experiments on established text-based game benchmarks show that the proposed NESTA method outperforms deep reinforcement learning-based techniques by achieving better generalization to unseen test games and learning from fewer training interactions., Comment: ACL 2023

With the growing interest in large language models, the need for evaluating the quality of machine text compared to reference (typically human-generated) text has become focal attention. Most recent works focus either on task-specific evaluation metrics or study the properties of machine-generated text captured by the existing metrics. In this work, we propose a new evaluation scheme to model human judgments in 7 NLP tasks, based on the fine-grained mismatches between a pair of texts. Inspired by the recent efforts in several NLP tasks for fine-grained evaluation, we introduce a set of 13 mismatch error types such as spatial/geographic errors, entity errors, etc, to guide the model for better prediction of human judgments. We propose a neural framework for evaluating machine texts that uses these mismatch error types as auxiliary tasks and re-purposes the existing single-number evaluation metrics as additional scalar features, in addition to textual features extracted from the machine and reference texts. Our experiments reveal key insights about the existing metrics via the mismatch errors. Using reinforcement learning for automated theorem proving has recently received much attention. Current approaches use representations of logical statements that often rely on the names used in these statements and, as a result, the models are generally not transferable from one domain to another. The size of these representations and whether to include the whole theory or part of it are other important decisions that affect the performance of these approaches as well as their runtime efficiency. In this paper, we present NIAGRA; an ensemble Name InvAriant Graph RepresentAtion. NIAGRA addresses this problem by using 1) improved Graph Neural Networks for learning name-invariant formula representations that is tailored for their unique characteristics and 2) an efficient ensemble approach for automated theorem proving. Our experimental evaluation shows state-of-the-art performance on multiple datasets from different domains with improvements up to 10% compared to the best learning-based approaches. Nearly all general-purpose neural semantic parsers generate logical forms in a strictly top-down autoregressive fashion. Though such systems have achieved impressive results across a variety of datasets and domains, recent works have called into question whether they are ultimately limited in their ability to compositionally generalize. In this work, we approach semantic parsing from, quite literally, the opposite direction; that is, we introduce a neural semantic parsing generation method that constructs logical forms from the bottom up, beginning from the logical form's leaves. The system we introduce is lazy in that it incrementally builds up a set of potential semantic parses, but only expands and processes the most promising candidate parses at each generation step. Such a parsimonious expansion scheme allows the system to maintain an arbitrarily large set of parse hypotheses that are never realized and thus incur minimal computational overhead. We evaluate our approach on compositional generalization; specifically, on the challenging CFQ dataset and three Text-to-SQL datasets where we show that our novel, bottom-up semantic parsing technique outperforms general-purpose semantic parsers while also being competitive with comparable neural parsers that have been designed for each task., Comment: Accepted to ACL main conference

This paper computationally demonstrates a sharp improvement in predictive performance for $k$ nearest neighbors thanks to an efficient forward selection of the predictor variables. Most existing Time series classification (TSC) models lack interpretability and are difficult to inspect. Interpretable machine learning models can aid in discovering patterns in data as well as give easy-to-understand insights to domain specialists. In this study, we present Neuro-Symbolic Time Series Classification (NSTSC), a neuro-symbolic model that leverages signal temporal logic (STL) and neural network (NN) to accomplish TSC tasks using multi-view data representation and expresses the model as a human-readable, interpretable formula. In NSTSC, each neuron is linked to a symbolic expression, i.e., an STL (sub)formula. The output of NSTSC is thus interpretable as an STL formula akin to natural language, describing temporal and logical relations hidden in the data. We propose an NSTSC-based classifier that adopts a decision-tree approach to learn formula structures and accomplish a multiclass TSC task. The proposed smooth activation functions for wSTL allow the model to be learned in an end-to-end fashion. We test NSTSC on a real-world wound healing dataset from mice and benchmark datasets from the UCR time-series repository, demonstrating that NSTSC achieves comparable performance with the state-of-the-art models. Furthermore, NSTSC can generate interpretable formulas that match with domain knowledge.

Resource Description Framework (RDF) and Property Graph (PG) are the two most commonly used data models for representing, storing, and querying graph data. We present Expressive Reasoning Graph Store (ERGS) -- a graph store built on top of JanusGraph (a Property Graph store) that also allows storing and querying of RDF datasets. First, we describe how RDF data can be translated into a Property Graph representation and then describe a query translation module that converts SPARQL queries into a series of Gremlin traversals. The converters and translators thus developed can allow any Apache Tinkerpop compliant graph database to store and query RDF datasets. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach using JanusGraph as the base Property Graph store and compare its performance with standard RDF systems., Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures, 9 tables

Fatal diseases, as Critical Health Episodes (CHEs), represent real dangers for patients hospitalized in Intensive Care Units. These episodes can lead to irreversible organ damage and death. Nevertheless, diagnosing them in time would greatly reduce their inconvenience. This study therefore focused on building a highly effective early warning system for CHEs such as Acute Hypotensive Episodes and Tachycardia Episodes. To facilitate the precocity of the prediction, a gap of one hour was considered between the observation periods (Observation Windows) and the periods during which a critical event can occur (Target Windows). The MIMIC II dataset was used to evaluate the performance of the proposed system. This system first includes extracting additional features using three different modes. Then, the feature selection process allowing the selection of the most relevant features was performed using the Mutual Information Gain feature importance. Finally, the high-performance predictive model LightGBM was used to perform episode classification. This approach called MIG-LightGBM was evaluated using five different metrics: Event Recall (ER), Reduced Precision (RP), average Anticipation Time (aveAT), average False Alarms (aveFA), and Event F1-score (EF1-score). A method is therefore considered highly efficient for the early prediction of CHEs if it exhibits not only a large aveAT but also a large EF1-score and a low aveFA. Compared to systems using Extreme Gradient Boosting, Support Vector Classification or Naive Bayes as a predictive model, the proposed system was found to be highly dominant. Estimating the importance of variables is an essential task in modern machine learning. This help to evaluate the goodness of a feature in a given model. Several techniques for estimating the importance of variables have been developed during the last decade. In this paper, we proposed a computational and theoretical exploration of the emerging methods of variable importance estimation, namely: Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO), Support Vector Machine (SVM), the Predictive Error Function (PERF), Random Forest (RF), and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBOOST) that were tested on different kinds of real-life and simulated data. All these methods can handle both regression and classification tasks seamlessly but all fail when it comes to dealing with data containing missing values. The implementation has shown that PERF has the best performance in the case of highly correlated data closely followed by RF. PERF and XGBOOST are "data-hungry" methods, they had the worst performance on small data sizes but they are the fastest when it comes to the execution time. SVM is the most appropriate when many redundant features are in the dataset. A surplus with the PERF is its natural cut-off at zero helping to separate positive and negative scores with all positive scores indicating essential and significant features while the negatives score indicates useless features. RF and LASSO are very versatile in a way that they can be used in almost all situations despite they are not giving the best results.

Knowledge bases (KBs) are often incomplete and constantly changing in practice. Yet, in many question answering applications coupled with knowledge bases, the sparse nature of KBs is often overlooked. To this end, we propose a case-based reasoning approach, CBR-iKB, for knowledge base question answering (KBQA) with incomplete-KB as our main focus. Our method ensembles decisions from multiple reasoning chains with a novel nonparametric reasoning algorithm. By design, CBR-iKB can seamlessly adapt to changes in KBs without any task-specific training or fine-tuning. Our method achieves 100% accuracy on MetaQA and establishes new state-of-the-art on multiple benchmarks. For instance, CBR-iKB achieves an accuracy of 70% on WebQSP under the incomplete-KB setting, outperforming the existing state-of-the-art method by 22.3%., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figurs, 4 tables

Knowledge Base Question Answering (KBQA) tasks that involve complex reasoning are emerging as an important research direction. However, most existing KBQA datasets focus primarily on generic multi-hop reasoning over explicit facts, largely ignoring other reasoning types such as temporal, spatial, and taxonomic reasoning. In this paper, we present a benchmark dataset for temporal reasoning, TempQA-WD, to encourage research in extending the present approaches to target a more challenging set of complex reasoning tasks. Specifically, our benchmark is a temporal question answering dataset with the following advantages: (a) it is based on Wikidata, which is the most frequently curated, openly available knowledge base, (b) it includes intermediate sparql queries to facilitate the evaluation of semantic parsing based approaches for KBQA, and (c) it generalizes to multiple knowledge bases: Freebase and Wikidata. Most existing approaches for Knowledge Base Question Answering (KBQA) focus on a specific underlying knowledge base either because of inherent assumptions in the approach, or because evaluating it on a different knowledge base requires non-trivial changes. However, many popular knowledge bases share similarities in their underlying schemas that can be leveraged to facilitate generalization across knowledge bases. To achieve this generalization, we introduce a KBQA framework based on a 2-stage architecture that explicitly separates semantic parsing from the knowledge base interaction, facilitating transfer learning across datasets and knowledge graphs. We show that pretraining on datasets with a different underlying knowledge base can nevertheless provide significant performance gains and reduce sample complexity. Our approach achieves comparable or state-of-the-art performance for LC-QuAD (DBpedia), WebQSP (Freebase), SimpleQuestions (Wikidata) and MetaQA (Wikimovies-KG).

Knowledge Base Question Answering (KBQA) tasks that in-volve complex reasoning are emerging as an important re-search direction. However, most KBQA systems struggle withgeneralizability, particularly on two dimensions: (a) acrossmultiple reasoning types where both datasets and systems haveprimarily focused on multi-hop reasoning, and (b) across mul-tiple knowledge bases, where KBQA approaches are specif-ically tuned to a single knowledge base. In this paper, wepresent SYGMA, a modular approach facilitating general-izability across multiple knowledge bases and multiple rea-soning types. Specifically, SYGMA contains three high levelmodules: 1) KB-agnostic question understanding module thatis common across KBs 2) Rules to support additional reason-ing types and 3) KB-specific question mapping and answeringmodule to address the KB-specific aspects of the answer ex-traction. We demonstrate effectiveness of our system by evalu-ating on datasets belonging to two distinct knowledge bases,DBpedia and Wikidata. In addition, to demonstrate extensi-bility to additional reasoning types we evaluate on multi-hopreasoning datasets and a new Temporal KBQA benchmarkdataset on Wikidata, namedTempQA-WD1, introduced in thispaper. We show that our generalizable approach has bettercompetetive performance on multiple datasets on DBpediaand Wikidata that requires both multi-hop and temporal rea-soning

Traditional automated theorem provers have relied on manually tuned heuristics to guide how they perform proof search. Recently, however, there has been a surge of interest in the design of learning mechanisms that can be integrated into theorem provers to improve their performance automatically. In this work, we introduce TRAIL, a deep learning-based approach to theorem proving that characterizes core elements of saturation-based theorem proving within a neural framework. TRAIL leverages (a) an effective graph neural network for representing logical formulas, (b) a novel neural representation of the state of a saturation-based theorem prover in terms of processed clauses and available actions, and (c) a novel representation of the inference selection process as an attention-based action policy. We show through a systematic analysis that these components allow TRAIL to significantly outperform previous reinforcement learning-based theorem provers on two standard benchmark datasets (up to 36% more theorems proved). In addition, to the best of our knowledge, TRAIL is the first reinforcement learning-based approach to exceed the performance of a state-of-the-art traditional theorem prover on a standard theorem proving benchmark (solving up to 17% more problems).

The careful examination of sacred texts gives valuable insights into human psychology, different ideas regarding the organization of societies as well as into terms like truth and God. To improve and deepen our understanding of sacred texts, their comparison, and their separation is crucial. For this purpose, we use our data set has nine sacred scriptures. This work deals with the separation of the Quran, the Asian scriptures Tao-Te-Ching, the Buddhism, the Yogasutras, and the Upanishads as well as the four books from the Bible, namely the Book of Proverbs, the Book of Ecclesiastes, the Book of Ecclesiasticus, and the Book of Wisdom. These scriptures are analyzed based on the natural language processing NLP creating the mathematical representation of the corpus in terms of frequencies called document term matrix (DTM). After this analysis, machine learning methods like supervised and unsupervised learning are applied to perform classification. Here we use the Multinomial Naive Bayes (MNB), the Super Vector Machine (SVM), the Random Forest (RF), and the K-nearest Neighbors (KNN). We obtain that among these methods MNB is able to predict the class of a sacred text with an accuracy of about 85.84 %.

This paper demonstrates the predictive superiority of discrete wavelet transform (DWT) over previously used methods of feature extraction in the diagnosis of epileptic seizures from EEG data. Classification accuracy, specificity, and sensitivity are used as evaluation metrics. We specifically show the immense potential of 2 combinations (DWT-db4 combined with SVM and DWT-db2 combined with RF) as compared to others when it comes to diagnosing epileptic seizures either in the balanced or the imbalanced dataset. The results also highlight that MFCC performs less than all the DWT used in this study and that, The mean-differences are statistically significant respectively in the imbalanced and balanced dataset. Finally, either in the balanced or the imbalanced dataset, the feature extraction techniques, the models, and the interaction between them have a statistically significant effect on the classification accuracy.

Facing the diversity and growth of the musical field nowadays, the search for precise songs becomes more and more complex. The identity of the singer facilitates this search. In this project, we focus on the problem of identifying the singer by using different methods for feature extraction. Particularly, we introduce the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) for this purpose. To the best of our knowledge, DWT has never been used this way before in the context of singer identification. This process consists of three crucial parts. First, the vocal signal is separated from the background music by using the Robust Principal Component Analysis (RPCA). Second, features from the obtained vocal signal are extracted. Here, the goal is to study the performance of the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) in comparison to the Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficient (MFCC) which is the most used technique in audio signals. Finally, we proceed with the identification of the singer where two methods have experimented: the Support Vector Machine (SVM), and the Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM). We conclude that, for a dataset of 4 singers and 200 songs, the best identification system consists of the DWT (db4) feature extraction introduced in this work combined with a linear support vector machine for identification resulting in a mean accuracy of 83.96%.

Nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) is a relatively new unsupervised learning algorithm that decomposes a nonnegative data matrix into a parts-based, lower dimensional, linear representation of the data. NMF has applications in image processing, text mining, recommendation systems and a variety of other fields. Since its inception, the NMF algorithm has been modified and explored by numerous authors. One such modification involves the addition of auxiliary constraints to the objective function of the factorization. The purpose of these auxiliary constraints is to impose task-specific penalties or restrictions on the objective function. Though many auxiliary constraints have been studied, none have made use of data-dependent penalties. In this paper, we propose Zellner nonnegative matrix factorization (ZNMF), which uses data-dependent auxiliary constraints. Nonnegative Matrix Factorization (NMF) is an unsupervised learning algorithm that produces a linear, parts-based approximation of a data matrix. NMF constructs a nonnegative low rank basis matrix and a nonnegative low rank matrix of weights which, when multiplied together, approximate the data matrix of interest using some cost function. The NMF algorithm can be modified to include auxiliary constraints which impose task-specific penalties or restrictions on the cost function of the matrix factorization. In this paper we propose a new NMF algorithm that makes use of non-data dependent auxiliary constraints which incorporate a Toeplitz matrix into the multiplicative updating of the basis and weight matrices. We compare the facial recognition performance of our new Toeplitz Nonnegative Matrix Factorization (TNMF) algorithm to the performance of the Zellner Nonnegative Matrix Factorization (ZNMF) algorithm which makes use of data-dependent auxiliary constraints. We also compare the facial recognition performance of the two aforementioned algorithms with the performance of several preexisting constrained NMF algorithms that have non-data-dependent penalties. Knowledge base question answering (KBQA)is an important task in Natural Language Processing. Existing approaches face significant challenges including complex question understanding, necessity for reasoning, and lack of large end-to-end training datasets. In this work, we propose Neuro-Symbolic Question Answering (NSQA), a modular KBQA system, that leverages (1) Abstract Meaning Representation (AMR) parses for task-independent question understanding; (2) a simple yet effective graph transformation approach to convert AMR parses into candidate logical queries that are aligned to the KB; (3) a pipeline-based approach which integrates multiple, reusable modules that are trained specifically for their individual tasks (semantic parser, entity andrelationship linkers, and neuro-symbolic reasoner) and do not require end-to-end training data. NSQA achieves state-of-the-art performance on two prominent KBQA datasets based on DBpedia (QALD-9 and LC-QuAD1.0). In this paper, the flexibility, versatility and predictive power of kernel regression are combined with now lavishly available network data to create regression models with even greater predictive performances. Building from previous work featuring generalized linear models built in the presence of network cohesion data, we construct a kernelized extension that captures subtler nonlinearities in extremely high dimensional spaces and also produces far better predictive performances. Automated theorem proving in first-order logic is an active research area which is successfully supported by machine learning. While there have been various proposals for encoding logical formulas into numerical vectors -- from simple strings to more involved graph-based embeddings -- little is known about how these different encodings compare. In this paper, we study and experimentally compare pattern-based embeddings that are applied in current systems with popular graph-based encodings, most of which have not been considered in the theorem proving context before. Our experiments show that the advantages of simpler encoding schemes in terms of runtime are outdone by more complex graph-based embeddings, which yield more efficient search strategies and simpler proofs. To support this, we present a detailed analysis across several dimensions of theorem prover performance beyond just proof completion rate, thus providing empirical evidence to help guide future research on neural-guided theorem proving towards the most promising directions., Comment: 7 pages, preprint, under review

The main source of various religious teachings is their sacred texts which vary from religion to religion based on different factors like the geographical location or time of the birth of a particular religion. Despite these differences, there could be similarities between the sacred texts based on what lessons it teaches to its followers. This paper attempts to find the similarity using text mining techniques. The corpus consisting of Asian (Tao Te Ching, Buddhism, Yogasutra, Upanishad) and non-Asian (four Bible texts) is used to explore findings of similarity measures like Euclidean, Manhattan, Jaccard and Cosine on raw Document Term Frequency [DTM], normalized DTM which reveals similarity based on word usage. The performance of Supervised learning algorithms like K-Nearest Neighbor [KNN], Support Vector Machine [SVM] and Random Forest is measured based on its accuracy to predict correct scared text for any given chapter in the corpus. The K-means clustering visualizations on Euclidean distances of raw DTM reveals that there exists a pattern of similarity among these sacred texts with Upanishads and Tao Te Ching is the most similar text in the corpus., Comment: 18 pages, 22 figures

Recent advances in the integration of deep learning with automated theorem proving have centered around the representation of logical formulae as inputs to deep learning systems. In particular, there has been a growing interest in adapting structure-aware neural methods to work with the underlying graph representations of logical expressions. While more effective than character and token-level approaches, graph-based methods have often made representational trade-offs that limited their ability to capture key structural properties of their inputs. In this work we propose a novel approach for embedding logical formulae that is designed to overcome the representational limitations of prior approaches. Our architecture works for logics of different expressivity; e.g., first-order and higher-order logic. We evaluate our approach on two standard datasets and show that the proposed architecture achieves state-of-the-art performance on both premise selection and proof step classification.

Textual entailment is a fundamental task in natural language processing. Most approaches for solving the problem use only the textual content present in training data. A few approaches have shown that information from external knowledge sources like knowledge graphs (KGs) can add value, in addition to the textual content, by providing background knowledge that may be critical for a task. However, the proposed models do not fully exploit the information in the usually large and noisy KGs, and it is not clear how it can be effectively encoded to be useful for entailment. We present an approach that complements text-based entailment models with information from KGs by (1) using Personalized PageR- ank to generate contextual subgraphs with reduced noise and (2) encoding these subgraphs using graph convolutional networks to capture KG structure. Our technique extends the capability of text models exploiting structural and semantic information found in KGs. We evaluate our approach on multiple textual entailment datasets and show that the use of external knowledge helps improve prediction accuracy. This is particularly evident in the challenging BreakingNLI dataset, where we see an absolute improvement of 5-20% over multiple text-based entailment models.

Automated theorem provers have traditionally relied on manually tuned heuristics to guide how they perform proof search. Deep reinforcement learning has been proposed as a way to obviate the need for such heuristics, however, its deployment in automated theorem proving remains a challenge. In this paper we introduce TRAIL, a system that applies deep reinforcement learning to saturation-based theorem proving. TRAIL leverages (a) a novel neural representation of the state of a theorem prover and (b) a novel characterization of the inference selection process in terms of an attention-based action policy. We show through systematic analysis that these mechanisms allow TRAIL to significantly outperform previous reinforcement-learning-based theorem provers on two benchmark datasets for first-order logic automated theorem proving (proving around 15% more theorems).

In this paper, we introduce the problem of knowledge graph contextualization -- that is, given a specific NLP task, the problem of extracting meaningful and relevant sub-graphs from a given knowledge graph. The task in the case of this paper is the textual entailment problem, and the context is a relevant sub-graph for an instance of the textual entailment problem -- where given two sentences p and h, the entailment relationship between them has to be predicted automatically. We base our methodology on finding paths in a cost-customized external knowledge graph, and building the most relevant sub-graph that connects p and h. We show that our path selection mechanism to generate sub-graphs not only reduces noise, but also retrieves meaningful information from large knowledge graphs. Our evaluation shows that using information on entities as well as the relationships between them improves on the performance of purely text-based systems.

The aims of this work is to analyse of the global stability of the extended model of hepatitis C virus(HCV) infection with cellular proliferation, spontaneous cure and hepatocyte homeostasis. We first give general information about hepatitis C. Secondly, We prove the existence of local, maximal and global solutions of the model and establish some properties of this solution as positivity and asymptotic behaviour. Thirdly we show, by the construction of an appropriate Lyapunov function, that the uninfected equilibrium and the unique infected equilibrium of the model of HCV are globally asymptotically stable respectively when the threshold number $\mathcal{R}_{0}<1-\frac{q}{d_{I}+q}$ and when $\mathcal{R}_{0}>1$. In the monitoring of a complex electric grid, it is of paramount importance to provide operators with early warnings of anomalies detected on the network, along with a precise classification and diagnosis of the specific fault type. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-stage early warning system prototype for electric grid fault detection, classification, subgroup discovery, and visualization. In the first stage, a computationally efficient anomaly detection method based on quartiles detects the presence of a fault in real time. In the second stage, the fault is classified into one of nine pre-defined disaster scenarios. The time series data are first mapped to highly discriminative features by applying dimensionality reduction based on temporal autocorrelation. The features are then mapped through one of three classification techniques: support vector machine, random forest, and artificial neural network. Finally in the third stage, intra-class clustering based on dynamic time warping is used to characterize the fault with further granularity. Results on the Bonneville Power Administration electric grid data show that i) the proposed anomaly detector is both fast and accurate; ii) dimensionality reduction leads to dramatic improvement in classification accuracy and speed; iii) the random forest method offers the most accurate, consistent, and robust fault classification; and iv) time series within a given class naturally separate into five distinct clusters which correspond closely to the geographical distribution of electric grid buses., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures

Machine learning systems regularly deal with structured data in real-world applications. Unfortunately, such data has been difficult to faithfully represent in a way that most machine learning techniques would expect, i.e. as a real-valued vector of a fixed, pre-specified size. In this work, we introduce a novel approach that compiles structured data into a satisfiability problem which has in its set of solutions at least (and often only) the input data. The satisfiability problem is constructed from constraints which are generated automatically a priori from a given signature, thus trivially allowing for a bag-of-words-esque vector representation of the input to be constructed. In this paper, we propose and develop the novel idea of treating musical sheets as literary documents in the traditional text analytics parlance, to fully benefit from the vast amount of research already existing in statistical text mining and topic modelling. We specifically introduce the idea of representing any given piece of music as a collection of "musical words" that we codenamed "muselets", which are essentially musical words of various lengths. Given the novelty and therefore the extremely difficulty of properly forming a complete version of a dictionary of muselets, the present paper focuses on a simpler albeit naive version of the ultimate dictionary, which we refer to as a Naive Dictionary because of the fact that all the words are of the same length. We specifically herein construct a naive dictionary featuring a corpus made up of African American, Chinese, Japanese and Arabic music, on which we perform both topic modelling and pattern recognition. Although some of the results based on the Naive Dictionary are reasonably good, we anticipate phenomenal predictive performances once we get around to actually building a full scale complete version of our intended dictionary of muselets., Comment: 25 pages

Open-domain question answering (QA) is an important problem in AI and NLP that is emerging as a bellwether for progress on the generalizability of AI methods and techniques. Much of the progress in open-domain QA systems has been realized through advances in information retrieval methods and corpus construction. In this paper, we focus on the recently introduced ARC Challenge dataset, which contains 2,590 multiple choice questions authored for grade-school science exams. These questions are selected to be the most challenging for current QA systems, and current state of the art performance is only slightly better than random chance. We present a system that rewrites a given question into queries that are used to retrieve supporting text from a large corpus of science-related text. Our rewriter is able to incorporate background knowledge from ConceptNet and -- in tandem with a generic textual entailment system trained on SciTail that identifies support in the retrieved results -- outperforms several strong baselines on the end-to-end QA task despite only being trained to identify essential terms in the original source question. We use a generalizable decision methodology over the retrieved evidence and answer candidates to select the best answer. By combining query rewriting, background knowledge, and textual entailment our system is able to outperform several strong baselines on the ARC dataset.

Natural Language Inference (NLI) is fundamental to many Natural Language Processing (NLP) applications including semantic search and question answering. The NLI problem has gained significant attention thanks to the release of large scale, challenging datasets. Present approaches to the problem largely focus on learning-based methods that use only textual information in order to classify whether a given premise entails, contradicts, or is neutral with respect to a given hypothesis. Surprisingly, the use of methods based on structured knowledge -- a central topic in artificial intelligence -- has not received much attention vis-a-vis the NLI problem. While there are many open knowledge bases that contain various types of reasoning information, their use for NLI has not been well explored. To address this, we present a combination of techniques that harness knowledge graphs to improve performance on the NLI problem in the science questions domain. We present the results of applying our techniques on text, graph, and text-to-graph based models, and discuss implications for the use of external knowledge in solving the NLI problem.
