Understanding the thermoelastic response of a nanostructure is crucial for the choice of materials and interfaces in electronic devices with improved and tailored transport properties, at the length scales of the present technology. Here we show how the deposition of a $MoS_2$ monolayer can strongly modify the nanoscale thermoelastic dynamics of silicon substrates close to their interface. We achieve this result by creating a transient grating with extreme ultraviolet light, using ultrashort free-electron laser pulses, whose $\approx$84 nm period is comparable to the size of elements typically used in nanodevices, such as electric contacts and nanowires. The thermoelastic response, featured by coherent acoustic waves and an incoherent relaxation, is tangibly modified by the presence of monolayer $MoS_2$. Namely, we observed a major reduction of the amplitude of the surface mode, which is almost suppressed, while the longitudinal mode is basically unperturbed, aside from a faster decay of the acoustic modulations. We interpret this behavior as a selective modification of the surface elasticity and we discuss the conditions to observe such effect, which might be of immediate relevance for the design of Si-based nanoscale devices., Comment: 27 pages, 15 figures

The absence of efficient light modulators for extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and X-ray photons significantly limits their real-life application, particularly when even slight complexity of the beam patterns is required. Here we report on a novel approach to reversible imprinting of a holographic mask in an electronic Wigner crystal material with a sub-90 nm feature size. The structure is imprinted on a sub-picosecond time-scale using EUV laser pulses and acts as a high-efficiency diffraction grating that deflects EUV or soft X-ray light. The imprinted nanostructure is stable after the removal of the exciting beams at low temperatures but can be easily erased by a single heating beam. Modeling shows that the efficiency of the device can exceed 1%, approaching state-of-the-art etched gratings, but with the benefit of being programmable and tunable over a large range of wavelengths. The observed effect is based on the rapid change of lattice constant upon transition between metastable electronically-ordered phases in a layered transition metal dichalcogenide. The proposed approach is potentially useful for creating tunable light modulators in the EUV and soft X-ray spectral ranges.

Surface acoustic waves (SAWs) are excited by femtosecond extreme ultraviolet (EUV) transient gratings (TGs) in a room-temperature ferrimagnetic DyCo$_5$ alloy. TGs are generated by crossing a pair of EUV pulses from a free electron laser (FEL) with the wavelength of 20.8\,nm matching the Co $M$-edge, resulting in a SAW wavelength of $\Lambda=44$\,nm. Using the pump-probe transient grating scheme in a reflection geometry the excited SAWs could be followed in the time range of -10 to 100\,ps in the thin film. Coherent generation of TGs by ultrafast EUV pulses allows to excite SAW in any material and to investigate their couplings to other dynamics such as spin waves and orbital dynamics. In contrast, we encountered challenges in detecting electronic and magnetic signals, potentially due to the dominance of the larger SAW signal and the weakened reflection signal from underlying layers. A potential solution for the latter challenge involves employing soft X-ray probes, albeit introducing additional complexities associated with the required grazing incidence geometry.

We present the generation of transient polarization gratings at the nanoscale, achieved using a tailored accelerator configuration of the FERMI free electron laser. We demonstrate the capabilities of such a transient polarization grating by comparing its induced dynamics with the ones triggered by a more conventional intensity grating on a thin film ferrimagnetic alloy. While the signal of the intensity grating is dominated by the thermoelastic response of the system, such a contribution is suppressed in the case of the polarization grating. This exposes helicity-dependent magnetization dynamics that have so-far remained hidden under the large thermally driven response. We anticipate nanoscale transient polarization gratings to become useful for the study of any physical, chemical and biological systems possessing chiral symmetry.

We crossed two femtosecond extreme ultraviolet (EUV) pulses in a beta - Ga2O3 (001) single crystal to create transient gratings (TG) of light intensity with sub-100 nm spatial periodicity. The EUV TG excitation launches phonon modes, whose dynamics were revealed via the backward diffraction of a third, time-delayed, EUV probe pulse. In addition to the modes typically observed in this kind of experiment, the phase-matching condition imposed by the TG, combined with the sharp penetration depth of the EUV excitation pulses, permitted to generate and detect phonons with a wavevector tangibly larger (approximately 1 nm-1) than the EUV TG one, via stimulated Brillouin back-scattering (SBBS) of the EUV probe. While SBBS of an optical probe was reported in previous EUV TG experiments, the extension of SBBS to short wavelength radiation can be used as a contact-less experimental tool for filling the gap between the wavevector range accessible through inelastic hard X-ray and thermal neutron scattering techniques, and the one accessible through Brillouin scattering of visible and UV light., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

Time-resolved X-ray Emission/Absorption Spectroscopy (Tr-XES/XAS) is an informative experimental tool sensitive to electronic dynamics in materials, widely exploited in diverse research fields. Typically, Tr-XES/XAS requires X-ray pulses with both a narrow bandwidth and sub-picosecond pulse duration, a combination that in principle finds its optimum with Fourier transform-limited pulses. In this work, we explore an alternative xperimental approach, capable of simultaneously retrieving information about unoccupied (XAS) and occupied (XES) states from the stochastic fluctuations of broadband extreme ultraviolet pulses of a free-electron laser. We used this method, in combination with singular value decomposition and Tikhonov regularization procedures, to determine the XAS/XES response from a crystalline silicon sample at the L2,3-edge, with an energy resolution of a few tens of meV. Finally, we combined this spectroscopic method with a pump-probe approach to measure structural and electronic dynamics of a silicon membrane. Tr-XAS/XES data obtained after photoexcitation with an optical laser pulse at 390 nm allowed us to observe perturbations of the band structure, which are compatible with the formation of the predicted precursor state of a non-thermal solid-liquid phase transition associated with a bond softening phenomenon.

The possibility to obtain a three-dimensional representation of a single object with sub-$\mu$m resolution is crucial in many fields, from material science to clinical diagnostics. This is typically achieved through tomography, which combines multiple two-dimensional images of the same object captured at different orientations. However, this serial imaging method prevents single-shot acquisition in imaging experiments at free electron lasers. In the present experiment, we report on a new approach to 3D imaging using extreme-ultraviolet radiation. In this method, two EUV pulses hit simultaneously an isolated 3D object from different sides, generating independent coherent diffraction patterns, resulting in two distinct bidimensional views obtained via phase retrieval. These views are then used to obtain a 3D reconstruction using a ray tracing algorithm. This EUV stereoscopic imaging approach, similar to the natural process of binocular vision, provides sub-$\mu$m spatial resolution and single shot capability. Ultrafast control of magnetization on the nanometer length scale, in particular all-optical switching, is key to putting ultrafast magnetism on the path towards future technological application in data storage technology. However, magnetization manipulation with light on this length scale is challenging due to the wavelength limitations of optical radiation. Here, we excite transient magnetic gratings in a GdFe alloy with a periodicity of 87 nm by interference of two coherent femtosecond light pulses in the extreme ultraviolet spectral range at the free electron laser facility FERMI. The subsequent ultrafast evolution of the magnetization pattern is probed by diffraction of a third, time-delayed pulse tuned to the Gd N-edge at a wavelength of 8.3 nm. By examining the simultaneously recorded first and second diffraction orders and by performing reference real-space measurements with a wide-field magneto-optical microscope with femtosecond time resolution, we can conclusively demonstrate the ultrafast emergence of all-optical switching on the nanometer length scale., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

In this work, we study the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of the paradigmatic quasi-one-dimensional material (TaSe$_4$)$_2$I, that exhibits a transition into an incommensurate CDW phase when cooled just below room temperature, namely at T$_{\rm{CDW}} $= 263 K. We make use of both optical laser and free-electron laser (FEL) based time-resolved spectroscopies in order to study the effect of a selective excitation on the normal-state and on the CDW phases, by probing the near-infrared/visible optical properties both along and perpendicularly to the direction of the CDW, where the system is metallic and insulating, respectively. Excitation of the core-levels by ultrashort X-ray FEL pulses at 47 eV and 119 eV induces reflectivity transients resembling those recorded when only exciting the valence band of the compound - by near-infrared pulses at 1.55 eV - in the case of the insulating sub-system. Conversely, the metallic sub-system displays a relaxation dynamics which depends on the energy of photo-excitation. Moreover, excitation of the CDW amplitude mode is recorded only for excitation at low-photon-energy. This fact suggests that the coupling of light to ordered states of matter can predominantly be achieved when directly injecting delocalized carriers in the valence band, rather than localized excitations in the core levels. On a complementary side, table-top experiments allow us to prove the quasi-unidirectional nature of the CDW phase in (TaSe$_4$)$_2$I, whose fingerprints are detected along its $c$-axis only. Our results provide new insights on the symmetry of the ordered phase of (TaSe$_4$)$_2$I perturbed by a selective excitation, and suggest a novel approach based on complementary table-top and FEL spectroscopies for the study of complex materials., Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures

The interaction of intense light with matter gives rise to competing nonlinear responses that can dynamically change material properties. Prominent examples are saturable absorption (SA) and two-photon absorption (TPA), which dynamically increase and decrease the transmission of a sample depending on pulse intensity, respectively. The availability of intense soft X-ray pulses from free-electron lasers (FEL) has led to observations of SA and TPA in separate experiments, leaving open questions about the possible interplay between and relative strength of the two phenomena. Here, we systematically study both phenomena in one experiment by exposing graphite films to soft X-ray FEL pulses of varying intensity, with the FEL energy tuned to match carbon 1s to $\pi^*$ or 1s to $\sigma^*$ transitions. It is observed for lower intensities that the nonlinear contribution to the absorption is dominated by SA attributed to ground-state depletion; for larger intensities ($>10^{14}$ W/cm$^2$), TPA becomes more dominant. The relative strengths of the two phenomena depend in turn on the specific transition driven by the X-ray pulse. Both observations are consistent with our real-time electronic structure calculations. Our results reveal the competing contributions of distinct nonlinear material responses to spectroscopic signals measured in the X-ray regime, demonstrating an approach of general utility for interpreting FEL spectroscopies.

Self-action nonlinearity is a key aspect -- either as a foundational element or a detrimental factor -- of several optical spectroscopies and photonic devices. Supercontinuum generation, wavelength converters and chirped pulse amplification are just a few examples. The recent advent of Free Electron Lasers (FEL) fostered building on nonlinearity to propose new concepts and extend optical wavelengths paradigms for extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and X-ray regimes. No evidence for intrapulse dynamics, however, has been reported at such short wavelengths, where the light-matter interactions are ruled by the sharp absorption edges of core-electrons. Here, we provide experimental evidence for self-phase modulation of femtosecond FEL pulses, which we exploit for fine self-driven spectral tunability by interaction with sub-micrometric foils of selected monoatomic materials. Moving the pulse wavelength across the absorption edge, the spectral profile changes from a non-linear spectral blue-shift to a red-shifted broadening. These findings are rationalized accounting for ultrafast ionization and delayed thermal response of highly excited electrons above and below threshold, respectively., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures

Optical-domain Transient Grating (TG) spectroscopy is a versatile background-free four-wave-mixing technique used to probe vibrational, magnetic and electronic degrees of freedom in the time domain. The newly developed coherent X-ray Free Electron Laser sources allow its extension to the X-ray regime. Xrays offer multiple advantages for TG: their large penetration depth allows probing the bulk properties of materials, their element-specificity can address core-excited states, and their short wavelengths create excitation gratings with unprecedented momentum transfer and spatial resolution. We demonstrate for the first time TG excitation in the hard X-ray range at 7.1 keV. In Bismuth Germanate (BGO), the nonresonant TG excitation generates coherent optical phonons detected as a function of time by diffraction of an optical probe pulse. This experiment demonstrates the ability to probe bulk properties of materials and paves the way for ultrafast coherent four-wave-mixing techniques using X-ray probes and involving nanoscale TG spatial periods., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

In chemistry, biology and materials science, the ability to access interatomic interactions and their dynamical evolution has become possible with the advent of femtosecond lasers. In particular, the observation of vibrational wave packets via optical (UV-visible-IR) spectroscopies has been a major achievement as it can track the motion of nuclei within the system. However, optical spectroscopies only detect the effect of the interatomic vibrations on the global electronic surfaces. New tuneable, pulsed and polarized sources of short-wavelength radiation, such as X-Ray Free electron lasers, can overcome this limitation, allowing for chemical and, of primary importance in biochemistry, enantiomeric selectivity. This selectivity may be complemented by taking into account the chemical shifts of atoms belonging to different molecular moieties

Charge transport processes at interfaces which are governed by complex interfacial electronic structure play a crucial role in catalytic reactions, energy storage, photovoltaics, and many biological processes. Here, the first soft X-ray second harmonic generation (SXR-SHG) interfacial spectrum of a buried interface (boron/Parylene-N) is reported. SXR-SHG shows distinct spectral features that are not observed in X-ray absorption spectra, demonstrating its extraordinary interfacial sensitivity. Comparison to electronic structure calculations indicates a boron-organic separation distance of 1.9 {\AA}, wherein changes as small as 0.1 {\AA} result in easily detectable SXR-SHG spectral shifts (ca. 100s of meV). As SXR-SHG is inherently ultrafast and sensitive to individual atomic layers, it creates the possibility to study a variety of interfacial processes, e.g. catalysis, with ultrafast time resolution and bond specificity., Comment: 19 pages

The conversion of optical and electrical energy in novel materials is key to modern optoelectronic and light-harvesting applications. Here, we investigate the equilibration dynamics of photoexcited 2,7-bis(biphenyl-4-yl)-2,7-ditertbutyl-9,9-spirobiuorene (SP6) molecules adsorbed on ZnO(10-10) using femtosecond time-resolved two-photon photoelectron (2PPE) and optical spectroscopy. We find that, after initial ultrafast relaxation on fs and ps timescales, an optically dark state is populated, likely the SP6 triplet (T) state, that undergoes Dexter-type energy transfer ($r_{\mathrm{Dex}} = 1.3~\mathrm{nm}$) and exhibits a long decay time of 0.1 s. Because of this long lifetime a photostationary state with average T-T distances below 2 nm is established at excitation densities in the $10^{20}~\mathrm{cm}^{-2}~\mathrm{s}^{-1}$ range. This large density enables decay by T-T annihilation (TTA) mediating autoionization despite an extremely low TTA rate of $k_{\mathrm{TTA}} = 4.5~10^{-26}~\mathrm{m}^3~\mathrm{s}^{-1}$. The large external quantum efficiency of the autoionization process (up to 15 %) and photocurrent densities in the \mathrm{mA}~\mathrm{cm}^{-2}$ range offer great potential for light-harvesting applications.

Due to its wide band gap and high carrier mobility, ZnO is an attractive material for light-harvesting and optoelectronic applications. Its functional efficiency, however, is strongly affected by defect-related in-gap states that open up extrinsic decay channels and modify relaxation timescales. As a consequence, almost every ZnO sample behaves differently, leading to irreproducible or even contradicting observations. Here, a complementary set of time-resolved spectroscopies is applied to two ZnO samples of different defect density to disentangle the competing contributions of charge carriers, excitons, and defects to the non-equilibrium dynamics after photoexcitation: Time-resolved photoluminescence, excited state transmission, and electronic sum frequency generation. Remarkably, defects affect the transient optical properties of ZnO across more than eight orders of magnitude in time, starting with photodepletion of normally occupied defect states on femtosecond timescales, followed by the competition of free exciton emission and exciton trapping at defect sites within picoseconds, photoluminescence of defect-bound and free excitons on nanosecond timescales, and deeply trapped holes with microsecond lifetimes. These findings do not only provide the first comprehensive picture of charge and exciton relaxation pathways in ZnO, but also uncover the microscopic origin of previous conflicting observations in this challenging material and thereby offer means of overcoming its difficulties.

By combining complementary optical techniques, photoluminescence and time-resolved excited state absorption, we achieve a comprehensive picture of the relaxation processes in the organic/inorganic hybrid system SP6/ZnO. We identify two long-lived excited states of the organic molecules of which only the lowest energy one, localized on the sexiphenyl backbone of the molecule, is found to efficiently charge separate to the ZnO conduction band or radiatively recombine. The other state, most likely localized on the spiro-linked biphenyl, relaxes only by intersystem crossing to a long-lived, probably triplet state, thus acting as a sink of the excitation and limiting the charge separation efficiency., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

The electronic and structural properties of a material are strongly determined by its symmetry. Changing the symmetry via a photoinduced phase transition offers new ways to manipulate material properties on ultrafast timescales. However, in order to identify when and how fast these phase transitions occur, methods that can probe the symmetry change in the time domain are required. We show that a time-dependent change in the coherent phonon spectrum can probe a change in symmetry of the lattice potential, thus providing an all-optical probe of structural transitions. We examine the photoinduced structural phase transition in VO2 and show that, above the phase transition threshold, photoexcitation completely changes the lattice potential on an ultrafast timescale. The loss of the equilibrium-phase phonon modes occurs promptly, indicating a non-thermal pathway for the photoinduced phase transition, where a strong perturbation to the lattice potential changes its symmetry before ionic rearrangement has occurred., Comment: 14 pages 4 figures
