Abstract

This paper presents a detailed characterization of the positron beam delivered by the Beam Test Facility at Laboratori Nazionali of Frascati to the PADME experiment during Run III, which took place from October to December 2022. It showcases the methodology used to measure the main beam parameters such as the position in space, the absolute momentum scale, the beam energy spread, and its intensity through a combination of data analysis and Monte Carlo simulations. The results achieved include an absolute precision in the momentum of the beam to within $\sim$ 1-2 MeV$/c$, a relative beam energy spread below 0.25\%, and an absolute precision in the intensity of the beam at the level of 2\% percent.

Abstract

Axions detection requires the ultimate sensitivity down to the single photon limit. In the microwave region this corresponds to energies in the yJ range. This extreme sensitivity has to be combined with an extremely low dark count rate, since the probability of axions conversion into microwave photons is supposed to be very low. To face this complicated task, we followed two promising approaches that both rely on the use of superconducting devices based on the Josephson effect. The first one is to use a single Josephson junction (JJ) as a switching detector (i.e. exploiting the superconducting to normal state transition in presence of microwave photons). We designed a device composed of a coplanar waveguide terminated on a current biased Josephson junction. We tested its efficiency to pulsed (pulse duration 10 ns) microwave signals, since this configuration is closer to an actual axions search experiment. We show how our device is able to reach detection capability of the order of 10 photons with frequency 8 GHz. The second approach is based on an intrinsically quantum device formed by two resonators coupled only via a superconducting qubit network (SQN). This approach relies on quantum nondemolition measurements of the resonator photons. We show that injecting RF power into the resonator, the frequency position of the resonant drop in the transmission coefficient (S21) can be modulated up to 4 MHz. We anticipate that, once optimized, both the devices have the potential to reach single photon sensitivity.

Abstract

The inclusive cross-section of annihilation in flight $e^+e^-\rightarrow\gamma\gamma$ of 430 MeV positrons with atomic electrons of a thin diamond target has been measured with the PADME detector at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati. The two photons produced in the process were detected by an electromagnetic calorimeter made of BGO crystals. This measurement is the first one based on the direct detection of the photon pair and one of the most precise for positron energies below 1 GeV. This measurement represents a necessary step to search for dark sector particles and mediators weakly coupled to photons and/or electrons with masses ranging from 1 MeV to 20 MeV with PADME. The measurement agrees with the Next to Leading Order QED prediction within the overall 6% uncertainty., Comment: Submitted to PRD

Abstract

The PADME experiment is designed to search for a hypothetical dark photon $A^{\prime}$ produced in positron-electron annihilation using a bunched positron beam at the Beam Test Facility of the INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati. The expected sensitivity to the $A^{\prime}$-photon mixing parameter $\epsilon$ is 10$^{-3}$, for $A^{\prime}$ mass $\le$ 23.5 MeV/$c^{2}$ after collecting $\sim 10^{13}$ positrons-on-target. This paper presents the PADME detector status after commissioning in July 2019. In addition, the software algorithms employed to reconstruct physics objects, such as photons and charged particles, and the calibration procedures adopted are illustrated in detail. The results show that the experimental apparatus reaches the design performance, and is able to identify and measure standard electromagnetic processes, such as positron Bremsstrahlung, electron-positron annihilation into two photons., Comment: submitted to JINST

Abstract

The PADME experiment at the DA$\Phi$NE Beam-Test Facility (BTF) of the INFN Laboratory of Frascati is designed to search for invisible decays of dark sector particles produced in electron-positron annihilation events with a positron beam and a thin fixed target, by measuring the missing mass of single-photon final states. The presence of backgrounds originating from beam halo particles can significantly reduce the sensitivity of the experiment. To thoroughly understand the origin of the beam background contribution, a detailed Geant4-based Monte Carlo simulation has been developed, containing a full description of the detector together with the beam line and its optical elements. This simulation allows the full interactions of each particle to be described, both during beam line transport and during detection, a possibility which represents an innovative way to obtain reliable background predictions, Comment: 14 pages 10 figures

Abstract

The light yield, the time resolution and the efficiency of different types of scintillating tiles with direct Silicon Photomultiplier readout and instrumented with a customised front-end electronics have been measured at the Beam Test Facility of Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati and several test stands. The results obtained with different configurations are presented. A time resolution of the order of 300 ps, a light yield of more than 230 photo-electrons, and an efficiency better than 99.8 $\%$ are obtained with $\sim 225$ cm$^2$ large area tiles. This technology is suitable for a wide range of applications in high-energy physics, in particular for large area muon and timing detectors., Comment: 28 pages, 24 figures, 6 tables

Abstract

Josephson junctions, in appropriate configurations, can be excellent candidates for detection of single photons in the microwave frequency band. Such possibility has been recently addressed in the framework of galactic axion detection. Here are reported recent developments in the modelling and simulation of dynamic behaviour of a Josephson junction single microwave photon detector. For a Josephson junction to be enough sensitive, small critical currents and operating temperatures of the order of ten of mK are necessary. Thermal and quantum tunnelling out of the zero-voltage state can also mask the detection process. Axion detection would require dark count rates in the order of 0.001 Hz. It is, therefore, is of paramount importance to identify proper device fabrication parameters and junction operation point., Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

The PADME experiment at the LNF Beam Test Facility searches for dark photons produced in the annihilation of positrons with the electrons of a fix target. The strategy is to look for the reaction $e^{+}+e^{-}\rightarrow \gamma+A'$, where $A'$ is the dark photon, which cannot be observed directly or via its decay products. The electromagnetic calorimeter plays a key role in the experiment by measuring the energy and position of the final-state $\gamma$. The missing four-momentum carried away by the $A'$ can be evaluated from this information and the particle mass inferred. This paper presents the design, construction, and calibration of the PADME's electromagnetic calorimeter. The results achieved in terms of equalisation, detection efficiency and energy resolution during the first phase of the experiment demonstrate the effectiveness of the various tools used to improve the calorimeter performance with respect to earlier prototypes., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures

Abstract

Quantum Sensing is a rapidly expanding research field that finds one of its applications in Fundamental Physics, as the search for Dark Matter. Devices based on superconducting qubits have already been successfully applied in detecting few-GHz single photons via Quantum Non-Demolition measurement (QND). This technique allows us to perform repeatable measurements, bringing remarkable sensitivity improvements and dark count rate suppression in experiments based on high-precision microwave photon detection, such as for Axions and Dark Photons search. In this context, the INFN Qub-IT project goal is to realize an itinerant single-photon counter based on superconducting qubits that will exploit QND for enhancing Axion search experiments. In this study, we present Qub-IT's status towards the realization of its first superconducting qubit device, illustrating design and simulation procedures and the characterization of fabricated Coplanar Waveguide Resonators (CPWs) for readout. We match target qubit parameters and assess a few-percent level agreement between lumped and distributed element simulation models. We reach a maximum internal quality factor of 9.2×105 for -92 dBm on-chip readout power.

Abstract

We report new measurements of the acoustic excitation of an Al5056 superconductive bar when hit by an electron beam, in a previously unexplored temperature range, down to 0.35 K. These data, analyzed together with previous results of the RAP experiment obtained for T > 0.54 K, show a vibrational response enhanced by a factor 4.9 with respect to that measured in the normal state. Abstract

A measurement of the inclusive cross section of in-flight electron-positron annihilation to photons, e+e−→γγ, is presented using the PADME detector at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati. A beam of 430 MeV positrons, corresponding to a center-of-mass energy of 20 MeV, strikes a thin diamond target. The two photons produced in the interaction are detected by an electromagnetic calorimeter made of BGO crystals. The measurement is the first based on direct detection of the photon pair and one of the most precise for positron energies below 1 GeV. It represents an intermediate step in the ultimate PADME goal of searching for dark sector particles and mediators weakly coupled to photons and electrons, with masses ranging from 1 to 20 MeV. The final value, σe+e−→γγ=(1.977±0.018(stat)±0.119(syst)) mb, agrees with next-to-leading-order QED predictions within the 6% experimental uncertainty.

Abstract

PADME (Positron Annihilation into Dark Matter Experiment) is a fixed target experiment located at the Beam Test Facility (BTF) at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati (LNF) designed to search for a massive dark photon A ′ in the process e + e − → γ A ′ , using a positron beam of energy up to 550 MeV. The experiment exploits the missing mass technique which allows for a search of A ′ in a model independent way. A sensitivity on the mixing constant ϵ > 10−3 for a dark photon mass in the range 1 ≤ m A ′ ≤ 23.7 MeV /c2 can be achieved by collecting 4 × 1013 positrons on target. Run 2 data taking finished in December 2020 and allowed to reach an integrated luminosity of 5 × 1012 positrons on target.

Abstract

The PADME collaboration aims to search for signals of a light dark photon A′ using the beam of the LNF LINAC. The experiment, approved by INFN at the end of 2015, foresees to detect A′, produced in the annihilation of positrons on a thin fixed target, by searching for missing mass signals. The detector construction is ongoing and should be completed within the end of 2017 in order to allow the collection of about 1013 positrons on target which are necessary to get a 10−3 sensitivity on the mixing parameter ε up to a dark photon mass of 23.7 MeV/c2.

Abstract

The PADME charged particle detector system should detect positrons and electrons with efficiency better than 99 {\%} and time resolution below 1 ns. The system hosts about 200 readout electronics channels whose operation has to be verified and commissioned. A custom based test system allowing to perform qualitative check of the produced frontend electronics has been developed and was used to test a total of 256 channels. The obtained time resolution was found to be consistent with the requirements and better than 500 ps for all the channels.

Abstract

Massive photon-like particles are predicted in many extensions of the Standard Model with a hidden sector accounting for dark matter candidates. They have interactions similar to the photon, are vector bosons, and can be produced together with photons. Most of the present experimental constraints on the dark photon (A) rely on the hypothesis of dominant decays to lepton pairs. The PADME experiment aims at searching for the e+e- → γA process in a positron-on-target experiment, assuming a decay of the A into invisible particles of the hidden sector. The positron beam of the DAΦNE Beam-Test Facility (BTF), produced by the LINAC at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati of INFN, will be used. The core of the experimental apparatus is a fine-grained, high-resolution calorimeter. It will measure with high precision the momentum of the photon in events with no other activity in the detector, thus allowing to measure the A mass as the missing mass in the final state. In about one year data taking, a sensitivity on the interaction strength (ϵ2 parameter) down to 10- is achievable, in the mass region from 1 MeV < MA < 23.7 MeV, running with 6000 positrons in 40 ns long bunches at 550 MeV beam energy. The experiment, now in the construction phase, is planned to run in 2018. The status of the PADME detector and the physics potential of PADME is reviewed.

Abstract

The PADME experiment, hosted at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati in Italy, is dedicated to the dark photon search. It looks for the reaction $e^{+}\,e^{-}\rightarrow A'\,\gamma$, where $A'$ indicates the dark photon. The $550\,\text{MeV}$ positrons beam that impinges on electrons, coming from an active diamond target, allows to scan $A'$ masses up to $23.7\,\text{MeV}$. In this context, the segmented electromagnetic calorimeter plays a fundamental role, since it measures the final photon four-momentum. It consists of $616$ BGO crystals displaced in a cylindrical shape of $\approx29\,\text{cm}$ radius with a central square hole of $5$ crystals side, to let Bremsstrahlung radiation pass, to limit the calorimeter trigger rate. Each crystal is read by a HZC XP1911 type B photomultipliers and their signal is digitised by means of a CAEN V1742 board, taking $1024$ samples at $1\,\text{GS/s}$. Here we report in detail the solutions adopted for the calorimeter together with the results obtained in tests performed on a small prototype and on single scintillating units., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

The PADME experiment at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati of the INFN searches for a hypothetical dark photon A ′ , produced in the annihilation between a positron of a beam with an electron of a target. The target is an active component of the experiment; it consists of a thin and large size diamond detector with a pattern of graphitic strips on both sides acting as ohmic electrodes for detector polarization and signal readout. In this paper the operation and performance of the active diamond target, as observed in the first PADME physics run, are reported.

Abstract

To search for the production of a dark photon ($A^{\prime} $) in the process ${e}^{+}{e}^{-}\to A^{\prime} \gamma $, the PADME apparatus has been built athe INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati. It is a small-scale detector consisting of an active target, a beam monitor system, a spectrometer to measure charged particle momenta in the range 50–400 MeV, a dipole magnet to deflect the primary positron beam out of the spectrometer and allow charged particle momentum analysis and an electromagnetic calorimetric system to detect signal and background photons produced in the annihilations with high accuracy. Each element has specific requirements that are stringent and sometimes at the limit of present technology. This proceeding will give an overview of each component and a description of the technical solutions implemented to accomplish the experiment needs. Results of the commissioning data taking, performed from October 2018 to February 2019, will be illustrated.

Abstract

The Italian institute for nuclear physics (INFN) has financed the SIMP project (2019-2021) in order to strengthen its skills and technologies in the field of meV detectors with the ultimate aim of developing a single microwave photon detector. This goal will be pursued by improving the sensitivity and the dark count rate of two types of photodetectors: current biased Josephson Junction (JJ) for the frequency range 10-50 GHz and Transition Edge Sensor (TES) for the frequency range 30-100 GHz. Abstract

Josephson junctions, in appropriate configurations, can be excellent candidates for detection of single photons in the microwave frequency band. Such possibility has been recently addressed in the framework of galactic axion detection. Here are reported recent developments in the modelling and simulation of dynamic behaviour of a Josephson junction single microwave photon detector. For a Josephson junction to be enough sensitive, small critical currents and operating temperatures of the order of ten of mK are necessary. Thermal and quantum tunnelling out of the zero-voltage state can also mask the detection process. Axion detection would require dark count rates in the order of 0.001 Hz. It is, therefore, is of paramount importance to identify proper device fabrication parameters and junction operation point., Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures
