Abstract

Recurrence plot based measures of complexity are capable tools for characterizing complex dynamics. In this letter we show the potential of selected recurrence plot measures for the investigation of even high-dimensional dynamics. We apply this method on spatially extended chaos, such as derived from the Lorenz96 model and show that the recurrence plot based measures can qualitatively characterize typical dynamical properties such as chaotic or periodic dynamics. Moreover, we demonstrate its power by analyzing satellite image time series of vegetation cover with contrasting dynamics as a spatially extended and potentially high-dimensional example from the real world.

Abstract

Our soils are the largest terrestrial carbon storage of the planet. With proceeding climate change and to retain food security for a growing human population, the pressure rises to increase the knowledge about the soil’s current status and especially its carbon content. Mapping the status of the soil carbon content presents a challenge, especially for larger areas, since conventional methods require extensive sample collection and expensive laboratory analyses. To fully utilise the soil’s capacity and preserve the its health in the future, it is required to monitor key soil parameters thereby adding a temporal dimension. Therefore, suitable approaches are needed to estimate the carbon content regularly and on larger scales. Soil spectroscopy has the potential to support this aim. At laboratory and airborne scale soil spectroscopy already proved to be an accurate method to estimate certain soil properties. Recently, advanced optical hyperspectral spaceborne imaging sensors have become available that have the potential to create quantitative soil carbon maps. These Earth observation (EO) sensors can also be a future monitoring tool to e.g. combat soil degradation. In this thesis, approaches were developed and applied to evaluate these new hyperspectral EO sensors to map the spectrally active soil organic carbon (SOC) content at different scales. Ground reference data represent a bottle neck but are essential for model generation and evaluation. A potential solution is the additional usage of existing large scale soil spectral libraries (SSLs) which contain information on physiochemical and spectral properties. Thereby, the challenge is the decreasing model accuracy with increasing size of the study site. Therefore, the first aim was to improve the prediction accuracy of SOC content using laboratory spectra and the European wide LUCAS SSL. Abstract

The Environmental Mapping and Analysis Program (EnMAP) is a spaceborne German hyperspectral satellite mission that aims at monitoring and characterizing the Earth's environment on a global scale. The mission is now ready to start with the sensor being by end of 2021 in Flight Acceptance Review, ready to be shipped to the launch pad in early 2022. This paper presents first an update of the mission status with recent activities and developments from the space and the ground segment. Then, an update of selected highlights of the science segment activities at launch phase are presented including preparation and if possible early results for the validation of EnMAP products, updates on EnMAP science algorithms (EnMAP-Box) developed at GFZ, online education initiative (HYPERedu), and further mission support activities such as background mission.

Abstract

EnMAP Technical Report, The scope of the Science Plan is to describe the scientific background, applications, and activities of the Environmental Mapping and Analysis Program (EnMAP) imaging spectroscopy mission. Primarily, this document addresses scientists and funding institutions, but it may also be of interest to environmental stakeholders and governmental agencies. It is designed to be a living document that will be updated throughout the entire mission lifetime. Chapter 1 provides a brief overview of the principles and current state of imaging spectroscopy. This is followed by an introduction to the EnMAP mission, including its objectives and impact on international programs as well as major environmental and societal challenges. Chapter 2 describes the EnMAP system together with data products and access, calibration/validation, and synergies with other missions. Chapter 3 gives an overview of the major fields of application such as vegetation and forests, geology and soils, coastal and inland waters, cryosphere, urban areas, atmosphere and hazards. Finally, Chapter 4 outlines the scientific exploitation strategy, which includes the strategy for community building and training, preparatory flight campaigns and software developments. A list of abbreviations is provided in the annex to this document and an extended glossary of terms and abbreviations is available on the EnMAP website.

Abstract

Soil erosion is generally recognized as the dominant process of land degradation. The formation and expansion of gullies is often a highly significant process of soil erosion. However, our ability to assess and simulate gully erosion and its impacts remains very limited. This is especially so at regional to continental scales. As a result, gullying is often overlooked in policies and land and catchment management strategies. Nevertheless, significant progress has been made over the past decades. Based on a review of >590 scientific articles and policy documents, we provide a state-of-the-art on our ability to monitor, model and manage gully erosion at regional to continental scales. In this review we discuss the relevance and need of assessing gully erosion at regional to continental scales (Section 1); current methods to monitor gully erosion as well as pitfalls and opportunities to apply them at larger scales (section 2); field-based gully erosion research conducted in Europe and European Russia (section 3); model approaches to simulate gully erosion and its contribution to catchment sediment yields at large scales (section 4); data products that can be used for such simulations (section 5); and currently existing policy tools and needs to address the problem of gully erosion (section 6). Section 7 formulates a series of recommendations for further research and policy development, based on this review. While several of these sections have a strong focus on Europe, most of our findings and recommendations are of global significance.

Abstract

The dataset is composed of Hyspex (VNIR/SWIR) hyperspectral imagery acquired during airplane overflights on October 1, 2015 within the Demmin Research Area. The acquisition conditions were cloud free. The dataset includes two mosaics generated based on 9 HySpex flight lines. The dataset also includes Level 2A EnMAP-like imagery simulated using the end-to-end Simulation tool (EeteS). Additionally, a soil database focusing on the soil organic carbon content (SOC) with geographic coordinates, SOC content, texture and spectral information is included., EnMAP Flight Campaigns Technical Report
