5. Where is the butter? Tracking recent butter and curd price changes across major milk producing regions in Poland

Abstract

This paper analyzes prices of two important food products of consumers in Poland, namely butter and curd to establish market integration of these two very different products and the recent large increase of butter prices. Poland is the fourht largest milk producer in the European Union and a butter exporter. The analysis focusos on two major milk producing regions. The analysis uses series of weekly butter and curd prices for each region for the period from January 5, 2014 to November 5, 2017. Addtionally, an indicator of the phasing of the EU milk quota system is included in the analysis. The modeling approach verifies the presence of "one price" by testing the series for stationarity and cointegration confirming the latter. Ultimately, the analysis uses the Vector Error Correction model and the first-differences of observations confirming very strong spatial integratoin of the two regional market. Interestingly, the markets for both butter and curd in two regions remaind strongly integrated although butter is subject to inetrnational trade, wheres curd is exclusively sold on the dmoestic market and its prices remaind mostly unaffected by the butter prices fluctuations.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is first, to analyze effects of quality-altering biotechnology on farms that use the technology under alternative technology market structures; and second, to demonstrate the differences between biotechnology and other technologies in their effects. Results can provide useful information for studying effects of technology and policy recommendations for the government and other institutions in planning R & D strategies. Biotechnology aiming at quality improvement has become increasingly important to the U.S. because of the surplus problems faced by agriculture and increasing international competition. Throughout this paper, "biotechnology" refers to quality-altering biotechnology. 29. Privatizing Agricultural Services in a Transition Economy.

Abstract

The emerging market-oriented agriculture in Poland creates uncertainty affecting the living standards of the farm population. Attitudes toward the privatization of agricultural marketing services, a visible demonstration of the new economic system, range from support for speedy ownership transfer to reversal of the process. The empirical model identifying factors influencing attitudes was based on the premise of the random utility maximization concept. Using data collected from 841 farms, factors influencing the preferred path of privatization were identified with the ordered probit approach. Results indicate that attitudes differ with regard to the managerial skills of a farmer, farm type, and farm location. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

In an era of increased globalization of agricultural trade and rapid biotechnology advances in developing crops with multiple traits, public and private institutions are facing increasing pressure to protect their technologies and develop partnerships to fund research. Under the auspices of international intellectual property rights agreements, Canada adopted stronger intellectual property rights policies to protect new plant cultivars and reward owners for their innovative efforts. This paper illustrates how Plant Breeders' Rights (PBR) applications for agriculture field crop (cereals, oilseeds, pulses) cultivars and registered cultivars by the Canadian Variety Registration Office of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (VROCFIA) have evolved over the past 20 yr in response to changes in domestic and international plant cultivar protection policies. The paper also examines the patenting pattern for plant-related traits and technologies. The paper found the bulk of PBR applications for field crops were accounted for by oilseeds followed by cereal and pulse crops such as field pea. In contrast to wheat and canola, which are protected by PBR and registered by the Canadian VROCFIA, pulse crops such as lentil have been developed by Canadian universities and funded by producer levies and released to growers without PBR protection. Among plant-related patents, most of them were credited to corn followed by canola and soybean. The Canadian public sector filed plant patents mainly for canola and concentrated on traits such as insect and disease resistance. The bulk of canola or soybean PBRs applications were by multinational life science seed companies, while the majority of wheat and barley were credited to public institutions such as the Canadian federal department of agriculture and universities., http://pubs.aic.ca/doi/abs/10.4141/cjps2013-235
