The hotel was originally known as El Verona Hotel, built by Owen Burns and named after his wife. The hotel opened in 1926 but suffered financially due to the Florida Land Crash. In 1929, John Ringling bought the property, renaming it the John Ringling Hotel. In 1964 the property was converted into senior living apartments and was renamed John Ringling Towers. However, the senior living facility closed in 1980. Despite significant deterioration, the building was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1987. Many plans for renovation and restoration met failure due to lack of funding and in 1998 the hotel was demolished to make room for the Sarasota Ritz-Carlton. It is located at the corner of 1st St and North Tamiami Trail in Sarasota.
