Fibro-osseous lesions (FOLs) of the jaws are a group of lesions characterized by the replacement of normal bone by fibrous tissue. In this study, four cases of FOLs with different characteristics will be evaluated with cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. Focal osseous dysplasia and florid osseous dysplasia were incidentally detected in patients and diagnosed based on clinical and radiographic features. In cases of fibrous dysplasia and ossifying fibroma, patients applied to with complaints of swelling in the jaws. The wide spreads of the pathologies were determined by CBCT images and the diagnosis was made by histopathological examination. While two-dimensional conventional imaging is sufficient for asymptomatic and small-sized cases, CBCT is necessary for large lesions to assess their relations with surrounding tissues. It is important to interpret the CBCT images of these lesions correctly and to bring the cases with various clinical, radiographic and demographic features into the literature. Purpose: To compare the medium- and long-term efficacy of implants and removable prostheses used to manage edentulous patients with florid cemento-osseous dysplasia. Materials and methods: The PubMed, Web of Science and Google Scholar databases were searched from December 2022 to March 2023. Two independent reviewers completed the search using a population, intervention, comparison, outcome and time questionnaire. Articles were selected based on strict inclusion and exclusion criteria. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses workflow was employed to represent the number of included and excluded articles. The risk of bias was analysed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist. From the included articles, the following information was extracted: demographics, concurrent medical conditions, characteristics of florid cemento-osseous dysplasia (clinical, radiographic and histological), interventions performed on the edentulous sites (placement of implants or removable prostheses), outcomes after the interventions (complications, success, bone loss, implant loss and relapse) and follow-up period. Results: Six articles were included in the final analysis, and implants and removable prostheses were the devices reported to have been used to restore the edentulous sites. Eleven implants were placed in patients with florid cemento-osseous dysplasia, with a survival rate of 91%. Three out of three removable prostheses were delivered and all resulted in symptoms and required surgical interventions. Conclusions: Removable prostheses in patients with florid cemento-osseous dysplasia can present complications. Implant placement within the florid cemento-osseous dysplasia lesion is unpredictable and can result in radiolucency and implant loss; meanwhile, implant placement outside of the lesion has shown favourable medium-term results. Florid cemento-osseous dysplasia (FCOD) is a reactive bony lesion in which normal bone is replaced by fibrous and cementum like tissue. The differential diagnosis of this condition includes solitary bone cyst, solitary ossifying fibroma, and chronic diffuse osteomyelitis. It is often an incidental finding on a radiograph. Radiographically, it presents as a bilateral radiolucent lesion or lobulated radio-opaque masses with an affinity for tooth-bearing areas. Mostly, it progresses asymptomatically, usually diagnosed on a routine radiographic examination. Periodontal surgeries, extractions along with surgical invasive procedures have been determined to be a contraindication in these patients. There is a scarcity of literature to determine if patients with these lesions could be considered for prosthetic rehabilitative procedures like dental implants. The purpose of this literature review was to determine if dental implants could be considered as a treatment modality in patients with FCOD. Methodology An electronic search was done in PUBMED, SCOPUS, and a hand search was done in radiology, periodontology, and oral surgery journals. The search yielded 428 results, from which only 6 articles were selected for this literature review. Both prospective and retrospective studies were included. Clinical studies with information on the pre-implant condition of the site, detailed implant procedure, and follow-up after implant placement of more than 6 months were only considered for this review. Results and conclusion Limited clinical studies, shorter follow-up periods were the shortcomings of this review. However, it can be summarized that dental implants should not be placed at the site of FCOD, however can be placed at adjacent sites. Background & Objectives: Fibro-Osseous-Lesions (FOLs) in jaws have been considered as one of the most important diagnostic challenges. FOLs are benign lesions in which part of the normal jaws bone is replaced by mineralizing fibrotic connective tissue. Different types of FOLs have some differences in etiology, treatment and prognosis but they may show similar in radiographic and microscopic view. Furthermore, they may also have microscopic similarities with some low-grade malignant lesions of the jaw. Therefore, in this review, we have tried to bring this always challenging story to a good and practical conclusion by providing specific and practical indicators for more accurate diagnosis of these lesions by examining the most important related studies. Materials & Methods: Evaluated studies were in the range of 2011 to 2021. Our criteria for entering the study were associated researches with diagnostic challenges of FOLs and purposes of the study include: determining the connection among the clinical and pathologic FOLs, distinguishing various diagnostic challenges of FOLs from each other and malignant bone lesions. Rationale: Osseous dysplasia (OD) is a benign fibro-osseous lesion classified as periapical, focal or florid with some rare cases being diagnosed as expansive OD. Patient Concerns: A 43-year-old female presented with gross mandible expansion and tooth displacement. Diagnosis: Imaging scans revealed an expansive lesion in the anterior mandible, with varying opacity in the central region, and other smaller lesions in the region of teeth #37 and #47, consistent with expansive OD. Treatment: Surgical resection followed by immediate reconstruction of the mandibular defect using a microvascularized fibular graft. Outcomes: The patient had a 4-year follow-up, with adequate mandibular bone continuity, mastication, swallowing, and speaking ability reestablished. Take-away Lessons: Immediate reconstruction after large surgical resection is required as tissues retract over time, hampering late reconstructions. Microvascularized fibular graft aims at adequate and functional rehabilitation with osseointegrated implants and long-term follow-up is needed as florid OD may evolve into expansive OD. We sought to evaluate the demographic and clinical presentations of COD by collecting and analyzing the demographic, clinical, radiographic, and pathologic data of COD diagnosed in our institution from 2017 to 2022. Over this six-year period, the records of 191 patients with COD were reviewed. Most patients were African American and female. Eighty-five patients were diagnosed with florid COD (FLCOD), 63 with periapical COD (PCOD), and 43 with focal COD (FCOD). Twenty-eight (14.7%) patients presented symptoms. The most common symptom was pain. All the symptomatic cases of COD that were histopathologically diagnosed were osteomyelitis in the setting of COD. Symptomatic patients were older (mean of 61.3 years) than the asymptomatic patients (mean of 51.2 years). Due to the radiographic appearance of a radiolucency or a mixture of radiolucency and radiopacity, forty-five asymptomatic patients were biopsied. Most of the asymptomatic patients biopsied were patients with FCOD (n = 19, 54.3%), followed by PCOD (n = 16, 25.8%), and FLCOD (n = 10, 15.2%). FLCOD is the most common form of COD to present with symptoms. Due to the significant overlap in clinical and radiographic presentation with other entities, FCOD and PCOD remain a diagnostic challenge to dentists. Florid cemento-osseous dysplasia is a rare, benign fibro-osseous lesion predominantly affecting middle-aged women which is characterized by the presence of multiple radiolucent and radiopaque lesions in the jaw. The word 'florid' was introduced to describe the wide spread, extensive manifestations of the disease in the jaws. FCOD is most commonly found in middle-aged, black women with the prevalence of 5.5%. Reports from Indian population is even rarer, with only 5 cases in literature, Florid cemento-osseous dysplasia is generally asymptomatic, and is usually detected during radiological examination. In this report, we present a case of a 44-year-old female patient diagnosed with Chronic diffuse osteomyelitis of the mandible later, on radiographic examination revealed FCOD, secondarily infected with Chronic diffuse osteomyelitis and multiple impacted tooth.

Fibrous dysplasia is one of the benign fibro-osseous lesions. It may have more common monostotic form (a single bone lesion) or polyostotic form (multiple bone lesions) which is less common and may be associated with McCune-Albright Syndrome (that is hyperfunctioning endocrinopathies and hyperpigmented skin lesions). Fibrous dysplasia is common in its monostotic form in the maxillofacial skeleton. What is essential in a dental practice of each clinicist is not only knowledge of classification of diseases of the jaws but also being able to differentiate them, make a proper diagnosis beforehand for a subsequent suitable treatment. The aim of this article is to outline the differences between FD, the most common lesions such as ossifying fibroma, but also other nosologic entities of this heterogeneous group of diseases.

The presence of non-odontogenic cysts associated with benign fibro-osseous lesions of the jaws has been well documented. However, literature is scant when describing benign fibro-osseous lesions with associated odontogenic cysts. This case report highlights the presence of a concurrent developmental odontogenic cyst, glandular odontogenic cyst with extensive squamous metaplasia, in a patient with florid cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD). The postulated pathogenesis of these synchronous lesions is discussed along with a review of current literature. Florid cemento-osseous dysplasia (FCOD) can rarely be associated with bone lesions, including simple bone cysts (SBCs). Only a few cases showing the co-occurrence of these two distinct entities have been reported in the literature. This article reports two new cases of SBCs within FCOD. The first case involves a 37-year-old Black female with a large radiolucent lesion around the apex of the right third mandibular molar, accompanied by multiple cemento-osseous lesions around the mandibular teeth. Surgical exploration revealed an empty bone cavity, confirming the diagnosis of an SBC. Curettage of the bone walls was performed to stimulate healing, with promising results observed at the nine-month follow-up. The second case concerns a 44-year-old Black female presenting with a radiolucent lesion at the site of extraction of the left third mandibular molar and a slightly painful radiolucent/radio-opaque lesion in the apical region of the right first mandibular molar. Surgical exploration confirmed an SBC in the region of the left third mandibular molar and a bone biopsy was made. Histopathological analysis confirmed FCOD. Curettage of the bone wall was again used to promote healing through increased bleeding. At the 30-month follow-up, new dysplastic lesions had appeared, the initial SBC had healed completely, and a new SBC seemed to have developed in the apical region of the left second mandibular premolar. These cases highlight the importance of considering SBCs in the differential diagnosis of well-defined radiolucent lesions and demonstrate that surgical intervention for SBC-associated FCOD can yield favorable outcomes. Objective: This report discusses the clinical relevance of a novel case of an odontoma and transmigrated canine in the setting of florid cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD), hypercementosis and moderate to severe periodontitis in a 66-year-old patient.Background: An odontoma may infrequently impede tooth eruption and rarely has been implicated with canine transmigration. COD is a benign fibro-osseous lesion associated with decreased vascularity and poorer surgical intervention.Materials and Methods: A partially edentulous woman, in no acute distress, underwent clinical and radiographic evaluation in pursuit of comprehensive dental care.Results: Radiographic assessment demonstrated multiple occult pathologies of the mandible, including compound odontoma, canine transmigration, florid COD, hypercementosis and moderate to severe periodontitis, a concurrence thought to be previously unreported. Furthermore, the presence of the odontoma and transmigrated canine is apparently the second reported case in the geriatric population.Conclusions: The attending clinician should carefully weigh removal of an impacted and transmigrated canine associated with an odontoma in the setting of COD and compromised bone, particularly in older individuals. When surgical intervention is deferred in these clinical situations, patients should continue to be monitored for clinical and radiographic development of pathologic processes. Objectives: To describe the effects of cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD) on anatomical structures. Methods: CBCT scans were retrospectively selected from a database of individuals who attended an Oral Medicine service. Cases with a confirmed diagnosis of periapical, focal, or florid COD were included. Two oral and maxillofacial radiologists assessed the scans. Frequencies of the variables were described according to COD case, lesion areas, and teeth. Results: Sixty COD cases affected 244 areas and 426 teeth. Florid COD was the most common (n = 48). Cortical bone (buccal, lingual, palatine, or mandibular) (n = 42) and the maxillary sinus (n = 13) were the structures most frequently affected by displacement or perforation. Thinning (n = 80), expansion (n = 62), and perforation (n = 60) of the cortical bone were common effects. The median size of the lesions was 12 mm in the mesiodistal direction, 8 mm in the buccal-lingual/palatal direction, and 9 mm in the superior-inferior direction. Root resorption was observed in 18.1% of all teeth, while tooth displacement was uncommon (0.6%). All teeth affected by COD had a discontinuous lamina dura and non-uniformly visible periodontal ligament space. Conclusions: CBCT images revealed that cortical bone, lamina dura, and periodontal ligament space were the structures most affected by COD and the effects of COD on anatomical structures were more frequent than previously described. Clinical relevance: CODs are fibro-osseous lesions common in the clinical practice, and relationship with anatomical structures is poorly described. Florid cemento-osseous dysplasia (FCOD) is a rare benign fibro-osseous lesion which affects multiple quadrants and predominantly the mandible. This case report presents a successful implant placement with 8-year of follow-up in a 44-yearold woman asking for a fixed restoration in mandibular right posterior edentulous area. Radiographic images showed lobular, irregularly shaped radiopacities and radiolucencies almost symmetrically observed in the premolar-molar area of the right and left regions of the mandible. The findings of Xray images were attributable to FCOD. Minimally invasive two-stage surgery with strict infection control was followed to place two implants in lower right posterior region. The implants demonstrated clinically rigid fixation and restored successfully after 6 months. A direct functional connection between dysplastic bone and the implant load bearing surface was evidenced by the lack of symptoms, and the lack of soft tissues inflammation or peri-implant bone loss up to 8 years follow-up. The aim of this study was to describe a series with 66 cases of infected cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD) and to discuss the demographic distribution, clinicoradiographic features and treatment of this condition. A study looking back on the diagnoses made at a single Brazilian centre within a 28-year timeframe was performed. A literature review with searches across five databases was also conducted to identify reports on osteomyelitis/infected COD. Descriptive and statistical analyses were performed. The case series study showed a female/male ratio of 21:1. Affected individuals' mean age was 57.4 years. Mandible was the most affected site (95.5%) and florid subtype was the most frequent infected COD (62.1%). Tooth extraction was the main factor associated with the development of infection associated within a COD lesion. The literature review retrieved 30 studies reporting 46 cases of this condition. Asian women in their 40 s and 50 s were more affected. Surgery for removal/curettage of necrotic bone was acknowledged as an appropriate approach to the treatment of this infection. The clinicodemographic data of the study were similar to data collected across the literature. Clinicians, maxillofacial surgeons and oral rehabilitation providers should be alert to the diagnosis of COD, since infection is a frequent complication whose management is challenging. Abstract Background Osseous dysplasia (OD) is the most common fibro-osseous lesion of the jaw affecting the periapical region. Early stages of OD can resemble periapical radiolucencies, thus mimicking the radiological aspects of an endodontic pathology. Such radiolucent lesions affecting previously decayed or treated teeth are even more complex to interpret. Case presentation The aim of this paper is to report a case-series of representative clinical situations describing the radiological features and illustrating the diagnostic workup of patients with florid osseous dysplasia (FOD). Emphasis is given to the endodontic implications of such periapical bone disease and the complexity of accurate diagnosis in the context of endodontic retreatment. We then propose a practical radiological-based diagnostic algorithm to assist the clinician in the diagnostic of OD periapical lesions. Conclusion Periapical lesions may be confused with bone diseases such as osseous dysplasia, especially in the radiolucent initial stage. Knowledge of clinical features associated with a careful reading of cone beam CT images, such as fine opacities within the hypodense periapical lesion, may help determine the right diagnostic.

Florid cemento-osseous dysplasia (FCOD) is a reactive bone dysplasia that involves tooth-bearing areas of the jaws. It most commonly affects females and is seen less frequently in Caucasian and Asian groups. The age group may vary from 19 to 76 years and typically presents in the fourth and fifth decades. FCOD associated with impacted teeth and bony expansion is very rare and only a few familial cases have been reported in literature. Till date, <2% cases in Indians have been reported in literature. Benign fibroosseous lesions represent a group of lesions that share the same basic evolutive mechanism and are characterized by replacement of normal bone with a fibrous connective tissue that gradually undergoes mineralization. These lesions are presented by a variety of diseases including developmental, reactive-dysplastic processes and neoplasms. Depending on the nature and amount of calcified tissue, they can be observed as radiolucent, mixed or radiopaque. Their radiographic features could be well-defined or indistinguishable from the surrounding bone tissue. They can be asymptomatic as in osseous dysplasias and can be detected incidentally on radiographs, or they can lead to expansion in the affected bone as in ossifying fibroma. All fibroosseous lesions seen in the jaws and face are variations of the same histological pattern. Therefore, detailed clinical and radiographic evaluation in differential diagnosis is important. In this review, fibroosseous benign lesions are classified as osseous dysplasia, fibrous dysplasia and fibroosseous tumors; and radiographic features and differential diagnosis of these lesions are reviewed taking into account this classification.

Abstract Introduction Florid cemento-osseous dysplasia (FCOD) is a rare, benign, slow growing, multifocal fibro-osseous tumour originating from the periodontal ligament. The lesion is characterised by regular bone-structure replacement with fibrous tissue and dysplastic bone. The initial characteristics of FCOD, depending on localisation, resemble those of periapical lesions of inflammatory origin, potentially leading to misdiagnosis. In the absence of infection signs, the treatment of choice is conservative therapy with antibiotics and regular follow-up examinations. Presentation of case We report the case of a 39-year-old Caucasian woman with sensory disturbance along the inferior alveolar nerve for >2 weeks. The involved teeth were vital and the digital orthopantomogram indicated multiple bilateral periapical brightening. Biopsy was indicated to exclude malignancy and to confirm the FCOD diagnosis with predominantly reactive calcification and cell-rich connective-tissue reaction. The sensory disturbances disappeared after the biopsy. Further conservative therapy included regular radiological examinations every 2 years to prevent surgical intervention due to infection risk. Discussion Sensory disturbances around the nervus alveolaris inferior are well-known complications of dental and maxillofacial operations and of malignant tumours. Sensitivity disorder as a first symptom of fibro-osseous dysplasia has not been previously described. Although uncommon in its clinical behaviour, FCOD was finally diagnosed after thorough clinical, radiological, and histological examinations. Conclusion Paraesthesia combined with FCOD has not been previously described. Florid cemento-osseus dysplasia (FCOD) has been described as a reactive process in which normal bone is replaced by fibrous connective tissues and cementum-like materials. Radiographically it appears as dense, lobulated masses, often occurring bilaterally with symmetric involvement. In this case report, a successful implant placement has been reported in a 62-year-old Caucasian woman with a chief complaint of mandibular partial edentulous. Radiographic images showed the bilateral radiopaque lesions in edentulous regions of mandible, and mandibular anterior teeth alike. All mandibular teeth were vital and no root resorption was detected. The findings of X-ray images were attributable to FCOD. A highly conservative step-by-step 2-stage implant surgery was performed. After 6 months the implants loaded with fixed prosthesis. 2, 4, 6, 12, and 18 months after the surgery radiographic images were taken, which revealed an optimal functional rehabilitation and complete integration of implants. This report confirms that treating the edentulous area near the FCOD lesions could be planned, if conservative step- by-step implant placement been considered. To the best of our knowledge, a case of FCOD with successful implant placement has not been reported previously. More studies in more patients are needed to confirm results of such a therapeutic modality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD) is a benign fibro-osseous lesion of bone, in which normal bone is replaced by fibrous tissue, followed by calcification with osseous and cementum-like tissue. COD is classified into 3 categories according to its location: periapical, focal, and florid COD (FCOD). On radiography, FCOD appears radiolucent in its early stages. As it matures, radiopacities appear within the lesion, causing them to show a mixed appearance of radiolucency and radiopacity. Because FCOD is usually asymptomatic and grows in a self-limited manner, it does not require treatment. Secondary infection is the most frequent cause of symptomatic cases. We report a case of FCOD with symptoms that appeared after a dental restoration procedure and persisted after repeated operations. Cemento-osseous dysplasia is a well-known condition in which healthy bone becomes sclerotic. Hypovascularity of the lesion (caused by cementum-like deposits) increases the risk of secondary infection and osteomyelitis, which can also be induced by the placement of implants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Florid cemento-osseous dysplasia (FCOD) is a type of fibro-osseous lesion and represents a reactive process in which normal bone is replaced by poorly cellularized cementum-like materials and cellular fibrous connective tissues. It is strictly localized to the tooth-bearing or edentulous areas, often occurring bilaterally with symmetric involvements. In this case report, a mixed radiolucent and radiopaque lesion at the periapical area of the right mandibular second molar of a 46-year-old female patient was misdiagnosed as chronic apical periodontitis initially by clinical manifestation and radiographic finding on a periapical radiograph. The tooth #47 was a distal abutment tooth of a three-unit bridge from teeth #45–#47. No decay of teeth #45 and #47 was found when the bridge was removed. Electric pulp test revealed that the tooth #47 was a vital-pulp tooth. Panoramic radiography showed a similar mixed radiolucent and radiopaque lesion at the edentulous area of tooth #37. The symmetric distribution of the two lesions with no alveolar bone expansion and the positive vitality test of the involved tooth supported the diagnosis of FCOD for this case. No endodontic treatment or surgical biopsy was performed. The patient was instructed to undergo regular clinical and radiographic follow-up to monitor the change of the lesion. We suggest that when a radiolucent or mixed lesion occurs at the periapical area of a vital-pulp tooth, panoramic radiography may help differentiate an inflammatory periapical lesion from a lesion of cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD).

Florid cemento-osseous dysplasia (FCOD) is one among the uncommon bone dysplasias affecting the maxillofacial region. Reports from India are extremely rare with only five cases in literature. We report four Indian patients with FCOD, reported to our department during a period of seven years. The radiological features of the four lesions represent different stages, supporting the theory of progression of the lesion from a completely radiolucent stage to a mixed and finally to a completely radiopaque stage. Features are discussed and compared with that from other populations.

Florid cemento-osseous dysplasia (FCOD) is a multifocal fibro-osseous tumour originating from the periodontal ligament that presents as being rare, benign and slow-growing. The lesion is characterised by the replacement of regular bone-structure with fibrous tissue and dysplastic bone. Depending on localisation, the initial characteristics of FCOD resemble those of periapical lesions of inflammatory origin. We report on the current findings relating to the case of a 39-year-old Caucasian woman, who initially had persistent paresthesia of the right alveolaris inferior nerve (NAI) for longer than 2 weeks. The orthopantomogram showed multiple bilateral periapical radiolucency and a biopsy was indicated to rule out malignancy. Four years later, the radiolucency occurred once again in region 37, suggesting a recurrence of the lesion. Therefore, another minimally invasive surgery had to be performed, which revealed a bone cavity. Two years later, the bone of the affected region almost completely regenerated. We were aware that an invasive treatment could lead to infection of the hypovascular lesion. Because of the paresthesia, a biopsy was essential. Unexpectedly, the second minimally invasive surgical treatment was a significant success, as the bone lesion regenerated almost completely. The follow-up of this case was documented over more than 18 years. To date, this is the longest documented case of a FCOD. Minimally invasive surgical treatment of such lesions may lead to better bone regeneration and even a better quality of life for the patient. • FCOD is a multifocal fibro-osseous tumour originating from periodontal ligament. • The recurrence of the lesion, thus a relapse, was seen after four years. • Minimally invasive surgical treatment of FCOD can lead to better bone regeneration. Background: Osseous dysplasia (OD) is a form of fibro-osseous lesion located in the jaws that may interfere with the adjacent anatomical structures., Objectives: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the distribution of radiographic imaging features, the morphological characteristics and the lesion volume of OD with the use of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT)., Material and Methods: The study included radiologically diagnosed lesions followed up for at least 1 year. The prevalence and distribution of the OD types were defined in terms of age, sex, lesion location, teeth, relationship with the anatomical structures, and lesion volume., Results: The mean age gradually increased from the periapical group to the florid group (p = 0.018). It was observed that the mandible was the most frequently affected bone (85.5%) (p < 0.05). The margins of the lesions were well defined, and had an irregular or circular shape. The buccal cortical bone was the most affected structure (84.5%), and the damage in the cortical bone increased with an increase in the lesion volume. With regard to teeth, the most frequent disorder was a discontinuous lamina dura (83.0%)., Conclusions: Osseous dysplasia lesions affect a wide range of different anatomical areas, and show different volume and morphometric characteristics.

Cemento-osseous dysplasia is a group of disorders known to originate from periodontal ligament tissues. Florid cemento-osseous dysplasia clearly appears to be a form of bone and/or cementoid tissues restricted to jaw bones. This lesion is usually asymptomatic and is incidentally detected during routine radiographic examination. The diagnosis is made by clinical and radiographic examinations, and biopsy is not necessary. The patient must manifest the typical changes in at least two quadrants. An asymptomatic individual requires only a periodic follow-up to ensure that there is no change in the disease behavior. Surgical management is indicated only for a progressive lesion that produces orofacial disfigurement. This paper presents a rare case of a 60-year-old female who was clinically and radiographically diagnosed as having florid cemento-osseous dysplasia in the maxilla and mandible. Discussion is presented with emphasis on clinical and radiographic manifestations.

A 29-year-old systemically healthy female patient presented to our department. Cone-beam computed tomographic images showed multiple well-defined sclerotic masses with radiolucent border in both right and left molar regions of the mandible. These sclerotic masses were surrounded by a thin radiolucent border. We diagnosed the present pathology as florid cemento-osseous dysplasia and decided to follow the patient without taking biopsy. For the patient, who did not have any clinical complaints, radiographic followupis recommended twice a year. The responsibility of the dentist is to ensure the follow-up of the diagnosed patients and take necessary measures for preventing the infections. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Only three Indian patients of florid cemento-osseous dysplasia have been reported (less than 2%), according to the review of recent literature (2003). This makes the occurrence of FCOD a relatively rare phenomenon. The age group may vary from 19-76 years and typically presents in the fourth and fifth decade. In most of the cases, patients do not have family history of the disease. We report two cases showing classic radiologic features. The diagnosis of our cases were made radiographically.
