1. A generalized Frenet frame for computing MHD equilibria in stellarators

Abstract

For the representation of axi-symmetric plasma configurations (tokamaks), it is natural to use cylindrical coordinates $(R,Z,\phi)$, where $\phi$ is an independent coordinate. The same cylindrical coordinates have also been widely used for representing 3D MHD equilibria of non-axisymmetric configurations (stellarators), with cross-sections, defined in $(R,Z)$-planes, that vary over $\phi$. Stellarator equilibria have been found, however, for which cylindrical coordinates are not at all a natural choice, for instance certain stellarators obtained using the near-axis expansion (NAE), defined by a magnetic axis curve and its Frenet frame. In this contribution we demonstrate how to use an \emph{axis-following frame} that we call a 'generalized Frenet frame', as an alternative to using cylindrical coordinates in a 3D MHD equilibrium solver. We see two advantages: 1) the capability to easily represent configurations where the magnetic axis is highly non-planar or even knotted. 2) a reduction in the degrees of freedom needed for the geometry, enabling progress in optimization of these configurations. We discuss the definition of the generalized Frenet frame, and details of the implementation of the new frame in the 3D MHD equilibrium solver GVEC. Abstract

Field-of-view (FOV) recovery of truncated chest CT scans is crucial for accurate body composition analysis, which involves quantifying skeletal muscle and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) on CT slices. This, in turn, enables disease prognostication. Here, we present a method for recovering truncated CT slices using generative image outpainting. We train a diffusion model and apply it to truncated CT slices generated by simulating a small FOV. Our model reliably recovers the truncated anatomy and outperforms the previous state-of-the-art despite being trained on 87% less data., Comment: Shared last authorship: Florian J. Abstract

With the increasing maturity and scale of quantum hardware and its integration into HPC systems, there is a need to develop robust techniques for developing, characterizing, and benchmarking quantum-HPC applications and middleware systems. This requires a better understanding of interaction, coupling, and common execution patterns between quantum and classical workload tasks and components. This paper identifies six quantum-HPC execution motifs - recurring execution patterns characterized by distinct coupling and interaction modes. These motifs provide the basis for a suite of quantum mini-apps - simplified application prototypes that encapsulate essential characteristics of production systems. To support these developments, we introduce a mini-app framework that offers the necessary abstractions for creating and executing mini-apps across heterogeneous quantum-HPC infrastructure, making it a valuable tool for performance characterizations and middleware development., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Quantum computing has made tremendous improvements in both software and hardware that have sparked interest in academia and industry to realize quantum computing applications. To this end, several steps are necessary: The underlying problem must be encoded in a quantum circuit, a suitable device must be selected to execute it, and it must be compiled accordingly. This compilation step has a significant influence on the quality of the resulting solution. However, current state-of-the-art compilation tools treat the quantum circuit as a sequence of instructions without considering the actual application it realizes -- wasting a yet untapped potential to increase the solution quality. In this work, a different approach is explored that explicitly incorporates the application considered and aims to optimize its solution quality during compilation. Initial results show the benefits of this approach: For an industry-inspired application of a quantum generative model, the proposed approach outperformed Qiskit's most-optimized compilation scheme and led to better solution quality. 5. Statistical testing of random number generators and their improvement using randomness extraction

Abstract

Random number generators (RNGs) are notoriously hard to build and test, especially in a cryptographic setting. Although one cannot conclusively determine the quality of an RNG by testing the statistical properties of its output alone, running numerical tests is both a powerful verification tool and the only universally applicable method. In this work, we present and make available a comprehensive statistical testing environment (STE) that is based on existing statistical test suites. The STE can be parameterised to run lightweight (i.e. fast) all the way to intensive testing, which goes far beyond what is required by certification bodies. With it, we benchmark the statistical properties of several RNGs, comparing them against each other. We then present and implement a variety of post-processing methods, in the form of randomness extractors, which improve the RNG's output quality under different sets of assumptions and analyse their impact through numerical testing with the STE., Comment: 20+10 pages, 8 figures and 28 tables. 6. Benchmarking Quantum Generative Learning: A Study on Scalability and Noise Resilience using QUARK

Abstract

Quantum computing promises a disruptive impact on machine learning algorithms, taking advantage of the exponentially large Hilbert space available. However, it is not clear how to scale quantum machine learning (QML) to industrial-level applications. This paper investigates the scalability and noise resilience of quantum generative learning applications. We consider the training performance in the presence of statistical noise due to finite-shot noise statistics and quantum noise due to decoherence to analyze the scalability of QML methods. We employ rigorous benchmarking techniques to track progress and identify challenges in scaling QML algorithms, and show how characterization of QML systems can be accelerated, simplified, and made reproducible when the QUARK framework is used. We show that QGANs are not as affected by the curse of dimensionality as QCBMs and to which extent QCBMs are resilient to noise.

Abstract

Detection and control of Andreev Bound States (ABSs) localized at semiconductor-superconductor interfaces are essential for their use in quantum applications. Here we investigate the impact of ABSs on the supercurrent through a Josephson junction containing a quantum dot (QD). Additional normal-metal tunneling probes on both sides of the junction unveil the ABSs residing at the semi-superconductor interfaces. Such knowledge provides an ingredient missing in previous studies, improving the connection between theory and experimental data. By varying the ABS energies using electrostatic gates, we show control of the switching current, with the ability to alter it by more than an order of magnitude. Finally, the large degree of ABS tunability allows us to realize a three-site ABS-QD-ABS molecule (Andreev trimer) in which the central QD is screened by both ABSs. This system is studied simultaneously using both supercurrent and spectroscopy.

9. Cryptomite: A versatile and user-friendly library of randomness extractors

Abstract

We present Cryptomite, a Python library of randomness extractor implementations. The library offers a range of two-source, seeded and deterministic randomness extractors, together with parameter calculation modules, making it easy to use and suitable for a variety of applications. We also present theoretical results, including new extractor constructions and improvements to existing extractor parameters. The extractor implementations are efficient in practice and tolerate input sizes of up to $2^{40} > 10^{12}$ bits. They are also numerically precise (implementing convolutions using the Number Theoretic Transform to avoid floating point arithmetic), making them well suited to cryptography. Abstract

Abstract Medication poisoning, resulting from the ingestion of cardiotoxic drugs, presents a significant health issue. The mortality rate remains high for patients with myocardial dysfunction refractory to conventional treatments. Venoarterial Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (V-A ECMO) provides temporary support, potentially enhancing patient outcomes. This study aims to assess the efficacy of V-A ECMO in treating cardiovascular failure induced by cardiovascular medication poisoning. We utilized inpatient data from all hospitalisations in Germany from 2007 to 2022 due to cardiovascular medication poisoning treated with V-A ECMO. Patient characteristics, comorbidities, complications and application of ECMO were described descriptively and analysed for statistical significance between survivors and non-survivors. Overall, 49 patients received V-A ECMO for cardiovascular medication poisoning, with a survival rate of 63.6%. The most ingested medications were calcium-channel blockers (38.8%) and beta-adrenoceptor antagonists (34.7%). Half of non-survivors received in-hospital CPR, compared to 12.9% of survivors. Early ECMO implantation (within 24 h of admission) was common (83.7%) but did not significantly impact survival rates. A substantial number of patients presented with multiple substances ingested. V-A ECMO represents a viable option for patients experiencing cardiac failure due to medication poisoning. A structured implementation of V-A ECMO for cardiovascular medication poisoning could lead to higher survival rates.

Abstract

Benchmarking of quantum machine learning (QML) algorithms is challenging due to the complexity and variability of QML systems, e.g., regarding model ansatzes, data sets, training techniques, and hyper-parameters selection. The QUantum computing Application benchmaRK (QUARK) framework simplifies and standardizes benchmarking studies for quantum computing applications. Here, we propose several extensions of QUARK to include the ability to evaluate the training and deployment of quantum generative models. We describe the updated software architecture and illustrate its flexibility through several example applications: (1) We trained different quantum generative models using several circuit ansatzes, data sets, and data transformations. (2) We evaluated our models on GPU and real quantum hardware. Abstract

Abstract Image-guided percutaneous cryoablation is an established minimally invasive oncologic treatment. We hypothesized that cryoablation may modify the immune microenvironment through direct modulation of the tumor, thereby generating an anti-tumor response in tumors refractory to immune checkpoint inhibition (ICI). In this non-randomized phase II single-center study (NCT03290677), subjects with unresectable melanoma progressing on ICI underwent cryoablation of an enlarging metastasis, and ICI was continued for a minimum of two additional cycles. The primary endpoints were safety, feasibility and tumor response in non-ablated lesions. From May 2018 through July 2020, 17 patients were treated on study. The study met its primary endpoints with the combination strategy found to be safe and feasible with an objective response rate of 23.5% and disease control rate of 41% (4 partial response, 3 stable disease). Our data support further study of this synergistic therapeutic approach.

Abstract

Abstract The creation of carbonaceous nanoparticles and their dynamics in hydrocarbon flames are still debated in environmental, combustion, and material sciences. In this study, we introduce single-pulse femtosecond laser sheet-compressed ultrafast photography (fsLS-CUP), an ultrafast imaging technique specifically designed to shed light on and capture ultrafast dynamics stemming from interactions between femtosecond lasers and nanoparticles in flames in a single-shot. fsLS-CUP enables the first-time real-time billion frames-per-second (Gfps) simultaneous two-dimensional (2D) imaging of laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) and laser-induced heating (LIH) that are originated from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and soot particles, respectively. Furthermore, fsLS-CUP provides the real-time spatiotemporal map of femtosecond laser-soot interaction as elastic light scattering (ELS) at an astonishing 250 Gfps. In contrast to existing single-shot ultrafast imaging approaches, which are limited to millions of frames per second only and require multiple laser pulses, our method employs only a single pulse and captures the entire dynamics of laser-induced signals at hundreds of Gfps. Using a single pulse does not change the optical properties of nanoparticles for a following pulse, thus allowing reliable spatiotemporal mapping. Moreover, we found that particle inception and growth are derived from precursors. In essence, as an imaging modality, fsLS-CUP offers ultrafast 2D diagnostics, contributing to the fundamental understanding of nanoparticle’s inception and broader applications across different fields, such as material science and biomedical engineering.

25. The relationship between weight gain during chemotherapy and outcomes in patients with advanced non‐small cell lung cancer

Abstract

Abstract Background This post hoc, pooled analysis examined the relationship between different weight gain categories and overall survival (OS) in patients with non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) receiving first‐line platinum‐based chemotherapy. Methods Data were pooled from the control arms of three phase III clinical studies (NCT00596830, NCT00254891, and NCT00254904), and the maximum weight gain in the first 3 months from treatment initiation was categorised as >0%, >2.5%, and >5.0%. Cox proportional hazard modelling of OS was used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) for each category, including baseline covariates, time to weight gain, and time to confirmed objective response (RECIST Version 1.0). Results Of 1030 patients with advanced NSCLC (IIIB 11.5% and IV 88.5%), 453 (44.0%), 252 (24.5%), and 120 (11.7%) experienced weight gain from baseline of >0%, >2.5%, and >5.0%, respectively. The median time to weight gain was 23 (>0%), 43 (>2.5%), and 45 (>5.0%) days. After adjusting for a time‐dependent confirmed objective response, the risk of death was reduced for patients with any weight gain (>0% vs. ≤0% [HR 0.71; 95% confidence interval—CI 0.61, 0.82], >2.5% vs. ≤2.5% [HR 0.76; 95% CI 0.64, 0.91] and >5.0% vs. ≤5.0% [HR 0.77; 95% CI 0.60, 0.99]). The median OS was 13.5 versus 8.6 months (weight gain >0% vs. ≤0%), 14.4 versus 9.4 months (weight gain >2.5% vs. ≤2.5%), and 13.4 versus 10.2 months (weight gain >5.0% vs. ≤5.0%). Conclusions Weight gain during treatment was associated with a reduced risk of death, independent of tumour response. The survival benefit was comparable for weight gain >0%, >2.5%, and >5.0%, suggesting that any weight gain may be an early predictor of survival with implications for the design of interventional cancer cachexia studies.

Abstract

Abstract Background Creatinine‐based estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFRCRE) may overestimate kidney function in patients with sarcopenia. While cystatin C‐based eGFR (eGFRCYS) is less affected by muscle mass, it may underestimate kidney function in patients with obesity. We sought to evaluate the relationship between body composition defined by computed tomography (CT) scans and discordance between creatinine, eGFRCRE and eGFRCYS in adult patients with cancer. Methods This study is a cross‐sectional study of consecutive adults with cancer with an abdominal CT scan performed within 90 days of simultaneous eGFRCRE and eGFRCYS measurements between May 2010 and January 2022. Muscle and adipose tissue cross‐sectional areas were measured at the level of the third lumbar vertebral body using a validated deep‐learning pipeline. CT‐defined sarcopenia was defined using independent sex‐specific cut‐offs for skeletal muscle index ( 30% lower than eGFRCRE; the secondary outcome was eGFRCYS > 50% lower than eGFRCRE. The odds of eGFR discordance were estimated using multivariable logistic regression modelling. Unadjusted spline regression was used to evaluate the relationship between skeletal muscle index and the difference between eGFRCYS and eGFRCRE. Results Of the 545 included patients (mean age 63 ± 14 years, 300 [55%] females, 440 [80.7%] non‐Hispanic white), 320 (58.7%) met the criteria for CT‐defined sarcopenia, and 136 (25%) had high adiposity. A total of 259 patients (48%) had >30% eGFR discordance, and 122 (22.4%) had >50% eGFR discordance. After adjustment for potential confounders, CT‐defined sarcopenia and high adiposity were both associated with >30% eGFR discordance (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.90, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.12–3.24; aOR 2.01, 95% CI 1.15–3.52, respectively) and >50% eGFR discordance (aOR 2.34, 95% CI 1.21–4.51; aOR 2.23, 95% CI 1.19–4.17, respectively). A spline model demonstrated that as skeletal muscle index decreases, the predicted difference between eGFRCRE and eGFRCYS widens considerably. Conclusions CT‐defined sarcopenia and high adiposity are both independently associated with large eGFR discordance. Incorporating valuable information from body composition analysis derived from CT scans performed as a part of routine cancer care can impact the interpretation of GFR estimates.

Abstract Throughout treatment with fixed orthodontic appliances, effective plaque control is crucial to maintaining dental health. This in-vitro study evaluated the cleaning performance of eleven different brush heads of seven electric toothbrushes (oscillating-rotating and sonic motions) and varying brushing forces around orthodontic brackets. Six Mini Diamond® Twin brackets were placed on black-stained front teeth. Teeth were coated with white titanium oxide and brushed in a machine six times for one minute with two different brushing forces (1 N and 1.5 N). Eleven different brush heads were evaluated (either oscillating-rotating or sonic movements). The teeth were scanned and planimetrically evaluated after brushing. Three detailed plaque areas (DPAs) were created: proximal ( 2 mm to bracket). The proportion of contaminated proximal, mid-tier, and distant surfaces (white regions) in relation to the respective DPA was calculated. Independent of brushing forces, places with a higher distance (> 2 mm) to the orthodontic bracket had the least amount of residual contamination, followed by areas with a minor (1–2 mm) and proximal distance (

For the continuous entropy analysis to hold and to ensure Galilean invariance in the divergence cleaning technique, the GLM-MHD system requires the use of non-conservative terms. Traditionally, entropy-stable DG discretizations have used a collocated nodal variant of the DG method, also known as the discontinuous Galerkin spectral element method (DGSEM) on Legendre-Gauss-Lobatto (LGL) points. Recently, Chan et al. ("Efficient Entropy Stable Gauss Collocation Methods". SIAM -2019) presented an entropy-stable DGSEM scheme that uses Legendre-Gauss points (instead of LGL points) for conservation laws. Our main contribution is to extend the discretization technique of Chan et al. to the non-conservative GLM-MHD system. We provide a numerical verification of the entropy behavior and convergence properties of our novel scheme on 3D curvilinear meshes. Moreover, we test the robustness and accuracy of our scheme with a magneto-hydrodynamic Kelvin-Helmholtz instability problem. The numerical experiments suggest that the entropy-stable DGSEM on Gauss points for the GLM-MHD system is more accurate than the LGL counterpart.

Abstract

Abstract Ventricular tachyarrhythmia (VTA) are frequent arrhythmias in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Representing a major risk factor for sudden cardiac death, Holter ECG at first clinical presentation appears insufficient. This study aims to investigate the ability of routinely obtained parameters associated with myocardial remodeling in stratifying for VTA in HCM. In this monocentric analysis, patients with HCM underwent 12-channel electrocardiography and echocardiography, including tissue doppler imaging. The study’s primary endpoint was the documentation of non-sustained and sustained ventricular tachycardia—summarized as ventricular tachyarrhythmias (VTA) on Holter ECG or active devices.
