Although Bangladesh has achieved considerable success in most of its socio-economic indicators in the last couple of decades, women and children undernutrition is still among the highest in the world. Women in Bangladesh suffer from a three-dimensional obstacle in maintaining a standard nutritional status: climate change, poor household amenities, and gender inequality. Bangladesh’s economy is predominantly rural agricultural where most people receive their dietary iron and/or zinc from C3 grains and legumes susceptible to lose iron and zinc content due to elevated carbon concentration in the atmosphere. On the other hand, the Asian Enigma theory indicates that despite having better position in most of the indicators of human well-being, South Asian women and children are in backward position in terms of nutritional status than the sub-Saharan African countries. Poor household amenities and gender inequality are the responsible factors behind this paradox. The current study attempts to examine how the underlying connection between climate change and poor household amenities is negatively affecting women’s body mass index (BMI). The study used both Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey (BDHS), 2007 dataset and global positioning system (GPS) data to connect women’s BMI with household amenities and climatic variabilities. Results of the study indicate that some climatic variabilities and poor household amenities have statistically significant negative consequences on women’s body mass index. But when the predictor variables are combined together in the same model, individual factors and poor household amenities become more important than climatic variabilities in predicting women’s nutritional status in Bangladesh.

This study focuses on individuals from a Hispanic community in a West Texas City. I looked at the effects of microaggressions and level of education on the attitudes of education. Concrete attitudes of education consist of the reality of getting an education and how you see others from your minority group achieving after getting an education. On the other hand, abstract attitudes consist of ideologies that getting an education will lead to job success regardless of education. I introduced 2 new models that brought two lines of research together. The first model consists of second-class citizen and assumptions of criminality and level of education with the concrete attitude as the dependent variable. I found significance in this model and this could be due to the forms of capital minorities realize they are lacking as well as internalized oppression and the concept of the White Racial Frame. The second model consisted of second-class citizen and assumptions of criminality with the abstract attitude as the dependent variable. This second model was not found to be significant. This could be because the sample size was small or there are other factors that may contribute to the model. Future research is needed to expand these models and shed light on how Hispanic individuals can be affected when it comes to their attitudes on education as a result of experiencing microaggressions and attaining a higher level of education.

This research is an analysis of the health insurance coverage of foreign-born Mexican population in the United States. Native-born Mexican Americans and native-born non-Hispanic whites are also analyzed to determine the extent to which foreign-born Mexicans differ in health insurance coverage. Data from the 2013-2014 NHANES was used to perform logistic regressions on each of these subpopulations of native-born Mexican Americans and non-Hispanic whites. The results show that Mexican American immigrants are less likely to be covered by health insurance compared to the other subpopulations in the study. Age above 65 years old was associated with increased odds of having health insurance coverage. Citizenship and living in the U.S. for 5 to 10 years or 10 to 30 years reduced the odds of being insured. These results show that policymakers will need to consider the needs specific to the foreign-born Mexican population in the U.S. if they wish to increase their overall wellbeing.

This paper explores the ways a marginalized group living on the edge of society creates a sense of identity and self-worth. Drawing on the concept of stigma (Goffman 1963), this paper traces the “moral career” of undocumented youth in mixed-status families. Drawing upon 17 interviews of documented and undocumented young adults, this study finds that children from mixed status families must face the realization of an ambiguous differentness throughout childhood and into early adulthood. Legal status plays a crucial role in the identity construction and management of undocumented youth of mixed-status families, and the relationship between ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and legal status is complex. This is further complicated by youths’ differential status within their own families and their peers.
