2. Proposing a causal pathway for health-related quality of life in people with psychotic disorders.

Abstract

This study aimed to establish independent predictors for health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in people with psychotic disorders, and the mediating role of global functioning in those relationships. Data for 1642 people collected as part of the second Australian National Survey of Psychosis were analyzed. The Assessment of Quality of Life (AQoL)-4D and the Personal and Social Performance scale were used for assessing HRQoL and global functioning respectively. The study commenced with a theoretical model comprised of 26 sociodemographic and clinical variables. A predictive model for HRQoL was built up using a purposeful selection strategy to arrive at a set of clinically meaningful, independent predictors. The mediating effect of global functioning was then assessed. Seven variables were found to have an independent effect on HRQoL: perception of loneliness, number of negative symptoms, use of psychotropic and anticholinergic medications, course of disorder, lifetime histories of chronic pain and cardiovascular disease and living arrangements at the time of the interview. All variables except perceived loneliness and chronic pain were partially mediated through global functioning. This final model explained 46% of the variance in HRQoL, with loneliness and number of negative symptoms the strongest predictors. Evidence in support of a credible causal pathway for HRQoL in people with psychotic disorders, mediated by global functioning was presented. The importance of the quality of social relationships was highlighted, and potential targets for improving the HRQoL of this population identified.Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

Abstract

We discuss a technique for measuring the electrical conductivity in metallic tubes based on Faraday's induction law. A detailed study of magnetic screening in the low frequency approximation leads to expressions that relate the screening coefficient to the geometry, magnetic permeability, and conductivity of the metallic tubes. We discuss experimental results for different tubes.

Abstract

Research was conducted to examine the dependence of the ferrimagnetic resonance linewidth on sintering conditions in manganese ferrite. The measurement of ferrimagnetic resonance linewidth of manganese ferrites, Mn1.0Fe2.0O4, was performed at 8.9 GHz from 77 to 320 K. The composition of the single crystal was confirmed using inductively coupled plasma spectrometry and preparation was performed using the floating zone method. The relaxation mechanisms that led to linewidth broadening and the different activation energies of each process were identified.

Abstract

We report the effect of temperature on the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectra of nanostructured line arrays. Different temperature dependences are observed for permalloy an nickel based samples. The qualitative features of the temperature dependence of the resonance field and linewidth can be described by the usual expression of slow relaxing linewidth mechanism and Bloch equation.

9. Systematic review of global functioning and quality of life in people with psychotic disorders.

Abstract

Aims People with psychotic disorders face impairments in their global functioning and their quality of life (QoL). The relationship between the two outcomes has not been systematically investigated. Through a systematic review, we aim to explore the presence and extent of associations between global functioning and QoL and establish whether associations depend on the instruments employed.Methods In May 2016, ten electronic databases were searched using a two-phase process to identify articles in which associations between global functioning and QoL were assessed. Basic descriptive data and correlation coefficients between global functioning and QoL instruments were extracted, with the strength of the correlation assessed according to the specifications of Cohen 1988. Results were reported with reference to the Meta-analysis of Observational Studies in Epidemiology guidelines and PRISMA standards. A narrative synthesis was performed due to heterogeneity in methodological approaches.Results Of an initial 15 183 non-duplicate articles identified, 756 were deemed potentially relevant, with 40 studies encompassing 42 articles included. Fourteen instruments for measuring global functioning and 22 instruments for measuring QoL were used. Twenty-nine articles reported linear associations while 19 assessed QoL predictors. Correlations between overall scores varied in strength, primarily dependent on the QoL instrument employed, and whether QoL was objectively or subjectively assessed. Correlations observed for objective QoL measures were consistently larger than those observed for subjective measures, as were correlations for an interviewer than self-assessed QoL. When correlations were assessed by domains of QoL, the highest correlations were found for social domains of QoL, for which most correlations were moderate or higher. Abstract

Analysis of the usual experimental method to quantify the giant magnetoimpedance (GMI) effect indicates that at high enough working frequencies the values of the impedance can be largely influenced by parasitic impedances of the circuit that affect significantly the analysis of the data. A discussion is introduced on the intrinsic impedance for a Co-based amorphous wire and the actual intrinsic value when parasitic impedances are cancelled. Research into the magnetic aftereffect and electrical conductivity of Ba2FeMoO6 is discussed. It was established that the magnetic aftereffect spectra indicate two clearly defined peaks connected with the magnetic phase transition and the orientational processes that can be fitted by activation energies close to 0.65 eV.

Abstract

An interaction model is derived to analyze the magnetic relaxation of polycrystalline samples of BiPbSRCaCuO high-Tc superconductors. It is shown that effective energy increases with increasing temperature and decreasing magnetic field. This is attributed to the interactions among the vortices in the sample. Comparison of the model's results with those from the Anderson-Kim model also showed good agreement.

The ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) and the electrical conductivity in the perovskite sample, Sr(sub 2)FeMoO(sub 6), was analyzed. The FMR linewidth analysis has not only indicated the presence of Fe(super 2+) cation but has also shown data on the microstructure of the sintered polycrystalline sample finding the value of the porosity.

27. Analysis of the Theoretical Expressions Used for the Computation of the Ferromagnetic Resonance Linewidths in Ferrites

Abstract

A comparative study of the linewidths (ΔH) calculated from different theoretical expressions for typical ferrites is presented. Bloch-Bloembergen, Landau-Lifshitz and Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equations for the precession of the magnetization are used as starting points and several approximations are applied for simplifying the final mathematical result. From the three theoretical expressions, the most frequently used approximated Lorentzian formula for the description of the ferromagnetic resonance can be obtained. It is observed that the Lorentzian curve provides the same result as the exact theoretical curves for ΔH < 600 Oe while for larger linewidths the exact formulations are needed. Comparison with experimental results on YIG, Li, Ni, Mn, MnCd and LiZnTiMn-ferrites studied by our group in the last few years is also presented.

28. Magnetic Relaxation of BiPbSrCaCuO High-T<INF>c</INF> Superconductors: Activation Energies and Isochronal Spectrum

Abstract

The time evolution of the field-cooled magnetic susceptibility (field cooling and then removing the field) has been studied in polycrystalline samples of Bi0.7Pb0.3SrCaCu1.8Ox in the temperature range 77 to 110 K. The isothermal curves χ(t, T) have been analyzed to extract the information contained about the nature of the sample relaxation. The time evolution of the susceptibility can be explained in terms of thermally activated processes whose parameters are obtained by means of different approximations (one and two Debye processes and box distribution). We present also the isochronal relaxation curves which are achieved by means of linear filtering operation acting on the isothermal curves.
