This paper examines the impact of sectorization, a central feature of French psychiatric reform, on the University of Strasbourg Psychiatric Clinic. The analysis begins with the first considerations surrounding sectorization in the 1960s; from there, the paper investigates how the Clinic was integrated into the sectorization of the Bas-Rhin from 1973 onwards, before ending with the sectoral repartition and thoughts about the de-sectorization of the Clinic in the early 1990s. The following questions are examined: What demands were placed on the Clinic in the course of sectorization and how did it deal with them? How and in which phases did the areas of responsibility of the university Clinic change as a result of sectorization? How did the number of patients and the patient structure change? What new sectoral care structures were established outside the Clinic, and how did they influence the work of its staff? The study reveals that, despite recognizing the importance of the new tasks of the psychiatric sector, the Strasbourg Clinic was primarily concerned with maintaining its traditional activities and was very successful in doing so. At the same time, this individual path led to delays in the development of sector structures and to tensions with regional hospitals and authorities.

By contrast with a dominant part of the historiography of psychoanalysis in France, which tends to be dedicated to the history of the centres and the biography of the great theorists, this article focuses on the less well known history of psychoanalysis in a peripheral region, namely Alsace, and its capital, Strasbourg. It zooms in on the main central university hospital service in the mental health care system of northeastern France, the University Psychiatric Clinic of Strasbourg. On the basis of abundant and varied sources, it relates the passions, attractions and aversions that Freudian methods aroused among the major protagonists of Strasbourg psychiatry, especially Théophile Kammerer (1916–2005), the director of the Clinic from 1953 to 1982, and the various actors (physician or non-physician) that have circled the establishment throughout the twentieth century.

This article delves into a problem that is still seldom addressed by historians—namely, the use of medical records testifying to the implementation of a psychoanalytically inspired treatment within a psychiatric institution for historical research. Based on publications, a broad spectrum of medical patient records, and interviews with former practitioners, it more broadly addresses issues related to the attention to patients’ voices at the University Psychiatric Clinic of Strasbourg, a central institution of psychiatric care in Northeastern France that was once considered a bastion of French Freudianism. Eventually, it contends with the fundamentally elusive nature of medical patient records when it comes to talking cures, highlighting the challenges and limitations inherent in the historical exploitation of this type of source.

Au milieu des annees 1920 un club dedie a l’etude collective des theories du psychiatre suisse Carl G. Jung vit le jour a Paris, a l’initiative de l’une de ses disciples bâloises. Quand bien meme ce groupe de patients et d’amateurs etait mixte, les femmes, animees par des ideaux melant aspirations spirituelles et feministes, n’en constituaient pas moins la colonne vertebrale. En eclairant a travers le club dit du Gros Caillou un pan inexplore de l’histoire socio-culturelle de la psychologie de l’inconscient dans la France de l’entre-deux-guerres, cette enquete nourrie d’archives encore inedites met en relief un modele de feminite contrastant avec les representations generalement associees aux theories psychanalytiques freudiennes.

Leonhard Schwartz’s importance in the history of psychology has probably not been fully appreciated, and this article is dedicated to the life and work of the Basel neurologist. It highlights the triangular relationship he maintained for 20 years with Pierre Janet, of whom he was a disciple, and Henri F. Ellenberger, to whom he passed on his passion for Janet’s oeuvre.

This article recounts a little-known episode in C. G. Jung’s life and in the history of analytical psychology: Jung’s visit to Paris in the spring of 1934 at the invitation of the Paris Analytical Psychology Club (named ‘Le Gros Caillou’), a stay marked by a lecture on the ‘hypothesis of the collective unconscious’ held in a private setting and preceded by an evening spent in Daniel Halévy’s literary salon with some readers and critics. En mai 1934, a l’invitation du Gros Caillou, ou Club de psychologie analytique de Paris, C.G. Jung sejourna quelques jours a Paris afin, notamment, d’y donner une conference sur l’inconscient collectif. L’evenement fut precede, la veille, par une soiree passee dans le salon litteraire de Daniel Halevy avec quelques lecteurs et critiques. Cet episode encore peu connu de l’histoire de la psychologie analytique apparait comme un moment charniere, propice a la cristallisation de diverses representations.

If his relationship to Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis has been widely acknowledged, Claude Lévi-Strauss' rapport with C.G. Jung's analytical psychology remains quite obscure. While secondary commentary has been abundant, its approach has above all been intertextual, to the detriment of a rigorously historical reading. Even if certain arguments put forward by supporters of so-called "influence" deserve to be taken into account, especially because they highlight Lévi-Strauss ambiguities and paradoxes toward Jung, this paper provides proof that a precise reading of the texts, with the help of recent studies on the intellectual genesis of Lévi-Strauss, lead to reject the thesis of an unstated debt owed by the French anthropologist to the Zurich psychologist.

Cette etude est une presentation historique d’une communication oubliee de C. G. Jung, prononcee en francais, le 14 juin 1928 devant le Centre permanent de Conferences et de Congres internationaux de Recherches psychiques de Geneve, et publiee dans le numero de novembre-decembre 1928 de la Revue metapsychique. L’auteur s’attache tout d’abord a decrire les differentes etapes de son elaboration, avant de proceder tour a tour a la description de son contexte, a l’analyse de son contenu ainsi qu’a une mise en lumiere de ses specificites.

Suivant un commentaire du premier article, « L’analyse des reves » (1909), que C.G. Jung consacre a l’interpretation des reves, l’auteur montre que la periode qui precede et accompagne la rupture entre Zurich et Vienne est marquee par un debat anime sur la fonction dite « prospective » du reve que soutient Alphonse Maeder.

En 1990, Sonu Shamdasani levait une partie du voile sur un personnage cle de l’histoire de la psychologie analytique, la denommee Miss Frank Miller. La presente reedition – dans leur version originale – de ses auto-observations psychologiques est l’occasion d’approfondir certains aspects de sa biographie, mais egalement de reexaminer la facon dont Theodore Flournoy puis Carl Gustav Jung les ont interpretes.

Suivant la these de Sonu Shamdasani selon laquelle les travaux de C. G. Jung sur la synchronicite sont une tentative de comprehension en termes scientifiques de ses reves et visions lies a la Premiere Guerre mondiale, cette etude historique, consacree a l’apparition de ces phenomenes de coincidences signifiantes dans la vie de C. G. Jung, vise a enrichir ce propos par des elements qui, jusqu’a present, n’ont pas encore ete apportes a la discussion.
