An investigation is conducted on the structural and dynamic properties of confined water in AIPO(sub 4)-5 zeolite by neutron scattering experiments during the adsorption process. The objective of the study was to elucidate the peculiar behavior of confined water at the nanoscopic confinement range.

Abstract

Although there is a tremendous volume of data available on the interaction of actinides with living organisms as plants, nearly all the studies are limited to macroscopic or physiological 3 measurements with no specific information at the molecular level. Peptides allow the study of complex coordination chemistry, as that involving actinide(IV) and proteins, without the intricacy of tertiary structure properties. For that purpose, a linear pentapeptide, acetyldiaspartyl-prolyl-diaspartyl-amide (Ac-Asp-Asp-Pro-Asp-Asp-NH2, called PP1 in this report), was synthesized and investigated as a potential chelating ligand of thorium(IV), neptunium(IV), and/or plutonium(IV) cations. Comparison with biological relevant iron(III) cation is also provided. Noteworthy, PP1 was able to prevent Np(IV) from hydrolysis into an insoluble precipitate. Spectrophotometry, 13C NMR and EXAFS at the iron K edge and actinide L3 edges were used to probe the cation coordination sphere and better describe the cation-peptide interaction. The complexes were found to be polynuclear with oxo or hydroxo bridged cations, Fe(III) forming a binuclear complex, Th(IV), Np(IV) or Pu(IV) forming a polynuclear complex with higher nuclearities.

Abstract

A new way of investigation with classical powder diffraction techniques is proposed; so, using, as an example, the case of the famous ferroelectric material, barium titanate BaTïO3, it is shown how very relevant informations related to the ferroelectric domain microstructure of such a material and its evolution can be obtained. At room temperature, BaTiO3 is tetragonal and ferroelectric. The single crystalline grains are divided into ferroelectric domains within the polarization vector is uniform. Two domain types are coexisting: 180° domains (antiparallel polarization vectors) and 90° domains (perpendicular polarization vectors) in order to minimize the overall deformation and electrostatic energies. The polar axis is [001]. The 90° domain walls are (101) and (011) planes. Therefore, the ferroelectric microstructure and the crystallographic structure are in close relation. The originality of this work is to reveal how the ferroelectric microstructure influences the X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) diagram of a ferroelectric material. Such a microstructure may change with physical factors as pressure, electric field or temperature. The evolution of the XRPD diagram (particularly 002-200 double lines and hhh lines) with the two last physical factors, has been shown to be correlated to the ferroelectric microstructure changes. So, three main features have been already detected and studied: - the intensity ratio of the 002-200 double lines is changing with the applied electric field and is directly related to the material polarization, - the width of the hhh lines decreases when heating a powder above the ferroelectric to paraelectric transition temperature (Tc = 120 °C). This decrease could not be explained by a classical lattice microdistorsion relaxation, wich usually occures for higher temperatures. It can be interpreted by the relaxation of particular lattice microdistorsion : the ferroelectric domain walls. - compared to the symmetric XRD line profiles of a non ferroelectric tetragonal material, the 002-200 double line profiles of BaTiO3 are very asymmetrical; this asymmetry looks like an unusual diffracted intensity between the two lines. This particular intensity has been proved to be closely related to the stress state of the ferroelectric microstructure. - The study of the ferroelectric microstructure effects in the whole XRPD diagram would allow the use of powder diffraction as a very useful tool for the ferroelectric microstructure characterization. Moreover, the evolution of the XRPD of tetragonal BaTiO3 versus grain size is recalled; this evolution has to be related to an evolution of the ferroelectric domain microstructure.; La diffraction des rayons X par les matériaux polycristallins, technique d'investigation de la matière déjà extrêmement riche, offre une possibilité nouvelle : l'étude et le suivi de la microstructure en domaines dans les matériaux ferroélectriques. Les grains monocristallins d'un matériau ferroélectrique sont divisés en domaines de polarisation uniforme dont l'arrangement antiparallèle et perpendiculaire minimise la déformation et l'énergie électrostatique. Cet arrangement dépend du conditionnement du matériau (monocristal, poudre, céramique...) et il est influencé par les contraintes physiques externes telles que la température, la pression ou un champ électrique. Habituellement, l'observation de la microstructure en domaines ferroélectriques est le plus souvent obtenue par microscopie optique ou électronique. Celle de la structure des murs de domaines ferroélectriques peut être réalisée par microscopie électronique en transmission à haute résolution. Toutefois, de telles études sont exigeantes aussi bien au niveau de la qualité du matériau que de l'investigation proprement dite. Il est montré, sur l'exemple d'un matériau ferroélectrique très anciennement connu, le métatitanate de baryum BaTi03, comment la microstructure en domaines laisse son empreinte dans le diagramme de diffraction des rayons X. A température ambiante, BaTiO3 cristallise avec un réseau quadratique et son axe polaire est suivant [001]. Les raies de diffraction d'un doublet OOh / hOO ont un profil dissymétrique comparé à celui symétrique d'un matériau quadratique non ferroélectrique et cette dissymétrie est localisée à l'intérieur du doublet. Une analyse approfondie du diagramme de diffraction en fonction de divers facteurs physiques tels que le champ électrique ou la température a permis de corréler les modifications du diagramme de diffraction à celles de la microstructure en domaines ferroélectriques et de les quantifier: - les intensités relatives des raies des doublets traduisent l'état de polarisation du matériau, - l'élargissement des raies hhh traduit l'état de microdistorsion de réseau que sont les murs de domaines ferroélectriques, - le profil dissymétrique des raies des doublets ou des triplets traduit l'état de contrainte de la microstructure en domaines ferroélectriques. Enfin, il est montré comment le diagramme de diffraction de BaTi03 évolue quand les dimensions des grains diminuent; cette évolution est à associer à une évolution de la microstructure en domaines ferroélectriques.
