Search

Context: How planets form in protoplanetary disks and what drives the formation of their seeds is still a major unknown. It is an accepted theory that multiple processes can trap dusty material in radially narrow rings or vortex-like structures, preventing the dust from drifting inwards. However, the relevant process for clumping this dusty material until it collapses under gravity still needs to be identified. One promising candidate is the streaming instability arising from the aerodynamic interaction between dust and gas once they reach similar densities. Aims: We investigate with a global disk model based on recent observational constraints if streaming instability can form dust clumps, which might gravitationally collapse. Further, our goal is to verify the observability of the produced structures using ALMA or ngVLA. Methods. For the first time, we present global 2D (R, z) hydrodynamic simulations using FARGO3D in which the dust is treated as a pressureless fluid. The disk model assumes stratification, realistic boundary conditions, and meaningful resolution to resolve the fast-growing modes. We choose two values for the total dust-to-gas mass ratio Z = 0.01 and Z = 0.02, compare the maximum clump density to the local Hill density, and compute the optical depth of the dust disk. Results: With a dust-to-gas mass ratio of Z = 0.01, we confirm previous streaming instability simulations, not showing the ability to form strong concentrations of dust clumps. With Z = 0.02, dense clumps form within 20 orbits, however reaching only 30% of the Hill density even following disk parameters from the massive protoplanetary disks GM Aur, HD163296, IM Lup, MWC 480, and TW Hya, which all share astonishingly similar surface density profiles., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

The vertical shear instability and the streaming instability are two robust sources of turbulence in protoplanetary disks. The former has been found to induce anisotropic turbulence that is stronger in the vertical than in the radial dimension and to be overall stronger compared to the largely isotropic turbulence caused by the streaming instability. In this study, we shed light on the dust diffusion by the vertical shear instability and the streaming instability separately and together, and in particular on the direction- and scale-dependence of the diffusion. To this end, we employ two-dimensional global models of the two instabilities either in isolation or in combination. The vertical shear instability in isolation diffuses dust more strongly in the vertical direction than the streaming instability in isolation, resulting in a wave-shaped dust layer in our two-dimensional simulations. Compared with this large-scale diffusion, though, our study highlights that the vertical shear instability causes substantially weaker or even negligible small-scale diffusion. We validate this result using previously published three-dimensional simulations. In particular when simulating centimetre-sized dust, the undulating dust layer becomes internally razor-thin. In contrast, the diffusion owing to the streaming instability exhibits only a marginal scale-dependence, with the dust layer possessing a Gaussian shape. Icy dust particles emerge in star-forming clouds and are subsequently incorporated in protoplanetary disks, where they coagulate into larger pebbles up to mm in size. In the disk midplane, ices are shielded from UV radiation, but moderate levels of disk turbulence can lift small particles to the disk surface, where they can be altered, or destroyed. Nevertheless, studies of comets and meteorites generally find that ices at least partly retained their interstellar medium (ISM) composition before being accreted onto these minor bodies. Here we model this process through hydrodynamical simulations with VSI-driven turbulence in the outer protoplanetary disk. We use the PLUTO code in a 2.5 D global accretion setup and include Lagrangian dust particles of 0.1 and 1 mm sizes. In a post-processing step, we use the RADMC3D code to generate the local UV radiation field to assess the level of ice processing of pebbles. We find that a small fraction ($\sim$17$\%$) of 100 $\mu$m size particles are frequently lifted up to $Z/R=0.2$ which can result in the loss of their pristine composition as their residence time in this layer allows for effective CO and water photodissociation. The larger 1 mm size particles remain UV-shielded in the disk midplane throughout the dynamical evolution of the disk. Our results indicate that the assembly of icy bodies via the accretion of drifting mm-size icy pebbles can explain the presence of pristine ice from the ISM, even in VSI-turbulent disks. Nevertheless, particles $\leq$ 100 $\mu$m experience efficient UV processing and may mix with unaltered icy pebbles, resulting in a less ISM-like composition in the midplane., Comment: Accepted to A&A

The inner regions of protoplanetary disks are prone to thermal instability (TI), which can significantly impact the thermal and dynamic evolution of planet-forming regions. Observable as episodic accretion outbursts, such periodic disturbances shape the disk's vertical and radial structure. We investigate the stability of the inner disk edge around a Class II T Tauri star and analyse the consequences of TI on the inner disk's evolution in both the vertical and radial dimensions. A particular focus is laid on the emergence and destruction of solid-trapping pressure maxima. Our 2D axisymmetric radiation hydrodynamic models include the transition to the dead zone from a highly turbulent inner disk, heating by both stellar irradiation and viscous dissipation, vertical and radial radiative transport and an adaptive dust-to-gas mass ratio. The simulated time frames include both the TI- and quiescent phases. We track the TI on S-curves of thermal stability. The TI in our models can develop in disks with moderate accretion rates and results from the activation of the magnetorotational instability (MRI) in the dead zone. The TI creates an extensive MRI active region around the midplane and disrupts the stable pebble- and migration trap at the inner edge of the dead zone. Our simulations consistently show the occurrence of TI-reflares, which, together with the initial TI, produce pressure maxima in the inner disk within 1 AU, possibly providing favourable conditions for streaming instability. On a timescale of a few thousand years, TI regularly disrupts the disk's radial and vertical structure within 1 AU. While several pressure maxima are created, stable migration traps are destroyed and reinstated after the TI phase. ALMA surveys have suggested that protoplanetary disks are not massive enough to form the known exoplanet population, under the assumption that the millimeter continuum emission is optically thin. In this work, we investigate how the mass determination is influenced when the porosity of dust grains is considered in radiative transfer models. The results show that disks with porous dust opacities yield similar dust temperature, but systematically lower millimeter fluxes compared to disks incorporating compact dust grains. Moreover, we recalibrate the relation between dust temperature and stellar luminosity for a wide range of stellar parameters, and calculate the dust masses of a large sample of disks using the traditionally analytic approach. The median dust mass from our calculation is about 6 times higher than the literature result, and this is mostly driven by the different opacities of porous and compact grains. A comparison of the cumulative distribution function between disk dust masses and exoplanet masses show that the median exoplanet mass is about 2 times lower than the median dust mass, if grains are porous, and there are no exoplanetary systems with masses higher than the most massive disks. Our analysis suggests that adopting porous dust opacities may alleviate the mass budget problem for planet formation. As an example illustrating the combined effects of optical depth and porous dust opacities on the mass estimation, we conduct new IRAM/NIKA-2 observations toward the IRAS 04370+2559 disk and perform a detailed radiative transfer modeling of the spectral energy distribution. The best-fit dust mass is roughly 100 times higher than the value from the traditionally analytic calculation. Protoplanetary disks exhibit a rich variety of substructure in millimeter continuum emission, often attributed to unseen planets. As these planets carve gaps in the gas, dust particles can accumulate in the resulting pressure bumps, forming bright features in the dust continuum. We investigate the role of dust dynamics in the gap-opening process with 2D radiation hydrodynamics simulations of planet--disk interaction and a two-population dust component modeled as a pressureless fluid. We consider the opacity feedback and backreaction due to drag forces as mm grains accumulate in pressure bumps at different stages of dust growth. We find that dust dynamics can significantly affect the resulting substructure driven by the quasi-thermal-mass planet with $M_p/M_\star=10^{-4}$. Opacity feedback causes nonaxisymmetric features to become more compact in azimuth, whereas the drag-induced backreaction tends to dissolve nonaxisymmetries. For our fiducial model, this results in multiple concentric rings of dust rather than the expected vortices and corotating dust clumps found in models without dust feedback. A higher coagulation fraction disproportionately enhances the effect of dust opacity feedback, favoring the formation of crescents rather than rings. Our results suggest that turbulent diffusion is not always necessary to explain the rarity of observed nonaxisymmetric features, and that incorporating dust dynamics is vital for interpreting the observed substructure in protoplanetary disks. We present Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) observations of TW Hya at 0.65 mm with 0.5 arcsecond angular resolution, together with high angular resolution archival observations at 0.87 mm, 1.3 mm, 2.1 mm and 3.1 mm. We constrain the outer disk emission with both image-plane retrieval, and visibility-plane modeling with non-parametric and parametric fitting tools. Our results confirm emission in the outer disk regions of TW Hya (60 au <= R <= 110 au) at 0.65 mm, 0.87 mm and 1.3 mm. With image-plane retrieval, we resolve the new continuum gap and ring, namely D79 and B86, at 0.87 mm and 1.3 mm. With visibility-plane modeling, we also detect this substructure at 0.65 mm in the form of a quasi-constant emission at the 1-sigma level. Furthermore, it has a high spectral index of 3.7, which may indicate dust grain sizes << 1 mm. It may be a dust trap or a traffic jam, that has a flux density of 60 mJy and a mass (1.59 earth masses) that accounts for up to 2% of the dust disk at 0.65 mm. In conclusion, we confirm the existence of a faint ring in the outer regions of TW Hya at multiple millimeter wavelengths. With visibility-plane modeling, we are able to set constrains that are 3 times better than the resolution of our Band 8 observations., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. Protoplanetary disks, the birthplace of planets, are expected to be gravitationally unstable in their early phase of evolution. IM Lup, a well-known T-Tauri star, is surrounded by a protoplanetary disk with spiral arms likely caused by gravitational instability. The IM Lup disk has been observed using various methods, but developing a unified explanatory model is challenging. Here we present a physical model of the IM Lup disk that offers a comprehensive explanation for diverse observations spanning from near-infrared to millimeter wavelengths. Our findings underscore the importance of dust fragility in retaining the observed millimeter emission and reveal the preference for moderately porous dust to explain observed millimeter polarization. We also find that the inner disk region is likely heated by gas accretion, providing a natural explanation for bright millimeter emission within 20 au. The actively heated inner region in the model casts a 100-au-scale shadow, aligning seamlessly with the near-infrared scattered light observation. The presence of accretion heating also supports the fragile dust scenario in which accretion efficiently heat the disk midplane. Due to the fragility of dust, it is unlikely that a potential embedded planet at 100 au formed via pebble accretion in a smooth disk, pointing to local dust enhancement boosting pebble accretion or alternative pathways such as outward migration or gravitational fragmentation., Comment: version 2. Signposts of early planet formation are ubiquitous in substructured young discs. Dense, hot and high-pressure regions formed during gravitational collapse process, integral to star formation, facilitate dynamical mixing of dust within the protostellar disc. This provides an incentive to constrain the role of gas-dust interaction and resolve zones of dust concentration during star-disc formation. We explore if thermal and dynamical conditions developed during disc formation can generate gas flows that efficiently mix and transport well-coupled gas and dust components. We simulated the collapse of dusty molecular cloud cores with the hydrodynamics code PLUTO augmented with radiation transport and self-gravity. We used a 2D axisymmetric geometry and follow the azimuthal component of velocity. Dust was treated as Lagrangian particles that are subject to drag from the gas, whose motion is computed on a Eulerian grid. We considered 1, 10 and 100 micron-sized neutral spherical dust. Importantly, the equation of state accurately includes molecular hydrogen dissociation. We focus on molecular cloud core masses of 1 and 3 Msun and explore effects of initial rotation rates and cloud core sizes. Our study underlines mechanisms for early transport of dust from inner hot disc regions via the occurrence of meridional flows and outflow. The vortical flow fosters dynamical mixing and retention of dust while thermal pressure driven outflow replenishes dust in the outer disc. Young dynamical precursors to planet-forming discs exhibit regions with complex hydrodynamical gas features and high-temperature structures. These can play a crucial role in concentrating dust for subsequent growth into protoplanets. Previous studies of the protoplanetary disk HD 163296 revealed that the morphology of its sub-au infrared emission encompasses the terminal sublimation front of dust grains, referred to as the inner rim, but also extends into the (supposedly) dust-free region within it. Here, we present a set of radiative hydrostatic simulations of the inner rim in order to assess how much the rim alone can contribute to the observed interferometric visibilities $V$, half-light radii $R_{\mathrm{hl}}$, and fractional disk fluxes $\mathcal{F}$ in the wavelength range $1.5$--$13\,\mu\mathrm{m}$. In our set of models, we regulate the cooling efficiency of the disk via the boundary condition for radiation diffusion and we also modify the shape of the sublimation front. We find that when the cooling efficiency is reduced, the infrared photosphere at the rim becomes hotter, leading to an increase of $R_{\mathrm{hl}}$ sufficient to match the observations. However, the near-infrared disk flux is typically too low ($\mathcal{F}\simeq0.25$ at $1.5\,\mu\mathrm{m}$), resulting in H-band visibility curves located above the observed data. We show that the match to the H-band observations up to moderate baselines can be improved when a wall-shaped rather than curved sublimation front is considered. Nevertheless, our model visibilities always exhibit a bounce at long baselines, which is not observed, confirming the need for additional emission interior to the rim. The vertical shear instability (VSI) is a hydrodynamical instability likely to produce turbulence in the dead zones of protoplanetary disks. Various aspects of this instability remain to be understood, including the disk regions where it can operate and the physical phenomena leading to its saturation. In this work, we studied the growth and evolution of secondary instabilities parasitic to the VSI, examining their relation with its saturation in axisymmetric radiation-hydrodynamical simulations of protoplanetary disks. We also constructed stability maps for our disk models, considering temperature stratifications enforced by stellar irradiation and radiative cooling and incorporating the effects of dust-gas collisions and molecular line emission. We found that the flow pattern produced by the interplay of the axisymmetric VSI modes and the baroclinic torque forms bands of nearly uniform specific angular momentum. In the high-shear regions in between these bands, the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI) is triggered. The significant transfer of kinetic energy to small-scale eddies produced by the KHI and possibly even the baroclinic acceleration of eddies limit the maximum energy of the VSI modes, likely leading to the saturation of the VSI. A third instability mechanism, consisting of an amplification of eddies by baroclinic torques, forms meridional vortices with Mach numbers up to $\sim 0.4$. Our stability analysis suggests that protoplanetary disks can be VSI-unstable in surface layers up to tens of au for reasonably high gas emissivities, even in regions where the midplane is stable. We studied the linear and nonlinear evolution of the Vertical Shear Instability (VSI) in axisymmetric models of protoplanetary disks, focusing on the transport of angular momentum, the produced temperature perturbations, and the applicability of local stability conditions. We modeled the gas-dust mixture via high-resolution two-moment (M1) radiation-hydrodynamical simulations including stellar irradiation with frequency-dependent opacities. We found that, given sufficient depletion of small grains (with a dust-to-gas mass ratio of $10\%$ of our nominal value of $10^{-3}$ for $<0.25$ $\mu$m grains), the VSI can operate in surface disk layers while being inactive close to the midplane, resulting in a suppression of the VSI body modes. The VSI reduces the initial vertical shear in bands of approximately uniform specific angular momentum, whose formation is likely favored by the enforced axisymmetry. Similarities with Reynolds stresses and angular momentum distributions in 3D simulations suggest that the VSI-induced angular momentum mixing in the radial direction may be predominantly axisymmetric. The stability regions in our models are well explained by local stability criteria, while the employment of global criteria is still justifiable up to a few scale heights above the midplane, at least as long as VSI modes are radially optically thin. Turbulent heating produces only marginal temperature increases of at most $0.1\%$ and $0.01\%$ in the nominal and dust-depleted models, respectively, peaking at a few (approximately three) scale heights above the midplane. We conclude that it is unlikely that the VSI can, in general, lead to any significant temperature increase since that would either require it to efficiently operate in largely optically thick disk regions or to produce larger levels of turbulence than predicted by models of passive irradiated disks., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Context. Planets are thought to form inside weakly ionized regions of protoplanetary disks, where turbulence creates ideal conditions for solid growth. However, the nature of this turbulence is still uncertain. In this zone, vertical shear instability (VSI) can operate, inducing a low level of gas turbulence and large-scale motions. Resolving kinematic signatures of VSI may reveal the origin of turbulence in planet-forming disks. However, an exploration of kinematic signatures of the interplay between VSI and forming planets is needed for a correct interpretation of radio interferometric observations. Robust detection of VSI would lead to a deeper understanding of the impact of gas turbulence on planet formation. Aims. The goal of this study is to explore the effect of VSI on the disk substructures triggered by an embedded massive planet. We focus on the impact of this interplay on CO kinematic observations with ALMA. Methods. We conduct global 3D hydrodynamical simulations of VSI-unstable disks with and without embedded massive planets, exploring Saturn- and Jupiter-mass cases. We study the effect of planets on the VSI gas dynamics, comparing with viscous disks. Post-processing the simulations with a radiative transfer code, we examine the kinematic signatures expected in CO molecular line emission, varying disk inclination. Further, we simulate ALMA high-resolution observations to test the observability of VSI and planetary signatures. Results. The embedded planet dampens the VSI along a radial region, most effective at the disk midplane. For the Saturn case, the VSI modes are distorted by the planet's spirals producing mixed kinematic signatures. For the Jupiter case, the planet's influence dominates the disk gas kinematics. Midplane heating induced by disk accretion plays a key role in determining the disk temperature particularly at the inner disk midplane where planets form. However, the efficiency of accretion heating has been not well constrained by observations. We construct two-dimensional models of the Class II disk around CW Tau, taking into account the midplane heating. The models are compared with the ALMA dust continuum observations at Bands 4, 6, 7 and 8, with an angular resolution of 0.1 arcsec. The observed brightness temperatures are almost wavelength-indenpendent at $\lesssim$10 au. We find that if the maximum dust size $a_{\rm max}$ is $\lesssim100~{\rm \mu m}$, the brightness temperatures predicted by the model exceed the observed values, regardless of the efficiency of accretion heating. The low observed brightness temperatures can be explained if millimeter scattering reduces the intensity. If the disk is passive, $a_{\rm max}$ needs to be either $\sim150~{\rm \mu m}$ or $\gtrsim$ few ${\rm cm}$. The accretion heating significantly increases the brightness temperature particularly when $a_{\rm max}\lesssim300~{\rm \mu m}$, and hence $a_{\rm max}$ needs to be either $\sim300~{\rm \mu m}$ or $\gtrsim$ few ${\rm cm}$. The midplane temperature is expected to be $\sim$1.5-3 times higher than the observed brightness temperatures, depending on the models. The dust settling effectively increases the temperature of the dust responsible for the millimeter emission in the active disk, which makes the model with $300~{\rm \mu m}$-sized dust overpredicts the brightness temperatures when strong turbulence is absent. Porous dust (porosity of 0.9) makes the accretion heating more efficient so that some sort of reduction in accretion heating is required. We study a Jupiter-mass planet formation for the first time in radiative magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) simulations and compare it with pure hydrodynamical simulations, as well as to different isothermal configurations. We found that the meridional circulation is the same in every setup. The planetary spiral wakes drive a vertical stirring inside the protoplanetary disc and the encounter with these shock fronts also helps in delivering gas vertically onto the Hill-sphere. The accretion dynamics are unchanged: the planet accretes vertically, and there is outflow in the midplane regions inside the Hill-sphere. We determined the effective $\alpha$-viscosity generated in the disc by the various angular momentum loss mechanisms, which showed that magnetic fields produce high turbulence in the ideal MHD limit, that grows from $\alpha \sim 10^{-2.5}$ up to $\sim 10^{-1.5}$ after the planet spirals develop. In the HD simulations, the planetary spirals contribute to $\alpha \sim 10^{-3}$, making this a very important angular momentum transport mechanism. Due to the various $\alpha$ values in the different setups, the gap opening is different in each case. In the radiative MHD setups, the high turbulent viscosity prevents gap opening, leading to a higher Hill mass, and no clear dust trapping regions. While the Hill accretion rate is $10^{-6} \rm{M_{Jup}/yr}$ in all setups, the accretion variability is orders of magnitude higher in radiative runs than in isothermal ones. Finally, with higher-resolution runs, the magneto-rotational instability started to be resolved, changing the effective viscosity and increasing the heating in the disc.

[Abridged] Aims. We provide an important step toward a better understanding of the magnetorotational instability (MRI)-dust coevolution in protoplanetary disks by presenting a proof of concept that dust evolution ultimately plays a crucial role in the MRI activity. Methods. First, we study how a fixed power-law dust size distribution with varying parameters impacts the MRI activity, especially the steady-state MRI-driven accretion, by employing and improving our previous 1+1D MRI-driven turbulence model. Second, we relax the steady-state accretion assumption in this disk accretion model, and partially couple it to a dust evolution model in order to investigate how the evolution of dust (dynamics and grain growth processes combined) and MRI-driven accretion are intertwined on million-year timescales. Results. Dust coagulation and settling lead to a higher gas ionization degree in the protoplanetary disk, resulting in stronger MRI-driven turbulence as well as a more compact dead zone. On the other hand, fragmentation has an opposite effect because it replenishes the disk in small dust particles. Since the dust content of the disk decreases over million years of evolution due to radial drift, the MRI-driven turbulence overall becomes stronger and the dead zone more compact until the disk dust-gas mixture eventually behaves as a grain-free plasma. Furthermore, our results show that dust evolution alone does not lead to a complete reactivation of the dead zone. Conclusions. The MRI activity evolution (hence the temporal evolution of the MRI-induced $\alpha$-parameter) is controlled by dust evolution and occurs on a timescale of local dust growth, as long as there is enough dust particles in the disk to dominate the recombination process for the ionization chemistry. Forbidden emission lines in protoplanetary disks are a key diagnostic in studies of the evolution of the disk and the host star. We report spatially resolved emission lines, [OI] 6300, 6363, [NII] 6548, 6583, H$\alpha$, and [SII] 6716, 6730 Angstrom that are believed to be associated with jets and magnetically driven winds in the inner disks. Observations were carried out with the optical integral field spectrograph of the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE), at the Very Large Telescope (VLT). With a resolution of 0.025 X 0.025 arcsec$^{2}$, we aim to derive the position angle of the outflow/jet (PA$_{outflow/jet}$) that is connected with the inner disk. The forbidden emission lines analyzed here have their origin at the inner parts of the protoplanetary disk. From the maximum intensity emission along the outflow/jet in DL Tau, CI Tau, DS Tau, IP Tau, and IM Lup, we were able to reliably measure the PA$_{outflow/jet}$ for most of the identified lines. We found that our estimates agree with PA$_{dust}$ for most of the disks. These estimates depend on the signal-to-noise level and the collimation of the outflow (jet). The outflows/jets in CIDA 9, GO Tau, and GW Lup are too compact for a PA$_{outflow/jet}$ to be estimated. Based on our kinematics analysis, we confirm that DL Tau and CI Tau host a strong outflow/jet with line-of-sight velocities much greater than 100 km s$^{-1}$, whereas DS Tau, IP Tau, and IM Lup velocities are lower and their structures encompass low-velocity components to be more associated with winds. Our estimates for the mass-loss rate, $\dot{M}_{{loss}}$, range between (1.1-6.5)X10$^{-7}$-10$^{-8}$ $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ for the disk-outflow/jet systems analyzed here. The outflow/jet systems analyzed here are aligned within around 1 degree between the inner and outer disk. The total amount of dust grains in protoplanetary disks is one of the key properties that characterize the potential for planet formation. With (sub-)millimeter flux measurements, literature studies usually derive the dust mass using an analytic form under the assumption of optically thin emission, which may lead to substantial underestimation. In this work, we conduct a parameter study with the goal of investigating the effects of disk structure and dust properties on the underestimation through self-consistent radiative transfer models. Different dust models, scattering modes and approaches for dust settling are considered and compared. The influences of disk substructures, such as rings and crescents, on the mass derivation are investigated as well. The results indicate that the traditional analytic method can underestimate the mass by a factor of a few to hundreds, depending on the optical depth along the line of sight set mainly by the true dust mass, disk size and inclination. As an application, we perform a detailed radiative transfer modeling of the spectral energy distribution of DoAr 33, one of the observed DSHARP disks. When the DSHARP dust opacities are adopted, the most probable dust mass returned from the Bayesian analysis is roughly 7 times higher than the value given by the analytic calculation. [Abridged] The occurrence rate of observed sub-Neptunes has a break at 0.1 au, which is often attributed to a migration trap at the inner rim of protoplanetary disks where a positive co-rotation torque prevents inward migration. We argue that conditions in inner disk regions are such that sub-Neptunes are likely to open gaps, lose the support of the co-rotation torque as their co-rotation regions become depleted, and the trapping efficiency then becomes uncertain. We study what it takes to trap such gap-opening planets at the inner disk rim. We performed 2D locally isothermal and non-isothermal hydrodynamic simulations of planet migration. A viscosity transition was introduced in the disk to (i) create a density drop and (ii) mimic the viscosity increase as the planet migrated from a dead zone towards a region with active magneto-rotational instability (MRI). We chose TOI-216b as a Neptune-like upper-limit test case, but we also explored different planetary masses, both on fixed and evolving orbits. For planet-to-star mass ratios $q\simeq(4$-$8)\times10^{-5}$, the density drop at the disk rim becomes reshaped due to a gap opening and is often replaced with a small density bump centered on the planet's corotation. Trapping is possible only if the bump retains enough gas mass and if the co-rotation region becomes azimuthally asymmetric, with an island of librating streamlines that accumulate a gas overdensity ahead of the planet. The overdensity exerts a positive torque that can counteract the negative torque of spiral arms. In our model, efficient trapping depends on the $\alpha$ viscosity and its contrast across the viscosity transition. In order to trap TOI-216b, $\alpha_{\mathrm{DZ}}=10^{-3}$ in the dead zone requires $\alpha_{\mathrm{MRI}}\gtrsim5\times10^{-2}$ in the MRI-active zone. Turbulent motions are believed to regulate angular momentum transport and influence dust evolution in protoplanetary disks. Measuring the strength of turbulence is challenging through gas line observations because of the requirement for high spatial and spectral resolution data, and an exquisite determination of the temperature. In this work, taking the well-known HD 163296 disk as an example, we investigated the contrast of gaps identified in high angular resolution continuum images as a probe for the level of turbulence. With self-consistent radiative transfer models, we simultaneously analyzed the radial brightness profiles along the disk major and minor axes, and the azimuthal brightness profiles of the B67 and B100 rings. By fitting all the gap contrasts measured from these profiles, we constrained the gas-to-dust scale height ratio $\Lambda$ to be $3.0_{-0.8}^{+0.3}$, $1.2_{-0.1}^{+0.1}$ and ${\ge}\,6.5$ for the D48, B67 and B100 regions, respectively. The varying gas-to-dust scale height ratios indicate that the degree of dust settling changes with radius. The inferred values for $\Lambda$ translate into a turbulence level of $\alpha_{\rm turb}\,{<}\,3\times10^{-3}$ in the D48 and B100 regions, which is consistent with previous upper limits set by gas line observations. However, turbulent motions in the B67 ring are strong with $\alpha_{\rm turb}\,{\sim}1.2\,{\times}\,10^{-2}$. Rings and asymmetries in protoplanetary disks are considered as signposts of ongoing planet formation. In this work, we conduct three-dimensional radiative transfer simulations to model the intriguing disk around HD 143006 that has three dust rings and a bright arc. A complex geometric configuration, with a misaligned inner disk, is assumed to account for the asymmetric structures. The two-dimensional surface density is constructed by iteratively fitting the ALMA data. We find that the dust temperature displays a notable discontinuity at the boundary of the misalignment. The ring masses range from 0.6 to 16Mearth that are systematically lower than those inferred in the younger HL Tau disk. The arc occupies nearly 20% of the total dust mass. Such a high mass fraction of dust grains concentrated in a local region is consistent with the mechanism of dust trapping into vortices. Assuming a gas-to-dust mass ratio of 30 that is constant throughout the disk, the dense and cold arc is close to the threshold of being gravitationally unstable, with the Toomre parameter Q~1.3. Nevertheless, our estimate of Q relies on the assumption for the unknown gas-to-dust mass ratio. Adopting a lower gas-to-dust mass ratio would increase the inferred Q value. The discovery of substructures in protoplanetary disks with ALMA has provided us key insights on the formation of planets. However, observational constraints on the formation of rocky planets have been still sparse, especially because of the limited spatial resolution. The inner edge of so-called dead zone is one of the preferential sites of rocky planet formation. We investigate the capabilities of ALMA and ngVLA for observing a dust concentration expected at the inner edge of the dead-zone around a Herbig star. Herbig Ae/Be stars are useful laboratories for exploring the evolution of rocky grains in protoplanetary disks because of their high luminosity which pushes the dead-zone inner edge outward. We find that, thanks to its unprecedented angular resolution and sensitivity, ngVLA can detect the dust concentration at the dead-zone inner edge, with a reasonable integration time of 10 hrs at $\lambda=3,7$ mm and 1 cm. The dust concentration is expected to be optically thick at the ALMA wavelengths and cannot be spatially resolved due to its limited resolution. On the other hand, the flux density from the inner disk regions ($\sim$3--4 au) observed with current VLA is higher for disks with a dust ring, and hence would be a useful indicator that help us choose potential candidates of disks having a dust concentration at the inner most region. TOI-216 is a pair of close-in planets with orbits deep in the 2:1 mean motion resonance. The inner, Neptune-class planet (TOI-216b) is near 0.12 au (orbital period $P_{\rm b} \simeq 17$ d) and has a substantial orbital eccentricity ($e_{\rm b} \simeq 0.16$), and large libration amplitude ($A_\psi \simeq 60^\circ$) in the resonance. The outer planet (TOI-216c) is a gas giant on a nearly circular orbit. We carry out $N$-body simulations of planet migration in a protoplanetary gas disk to explain the orbital configuration of TOI-216 planets. We find that TOI-216b's migration must have been halted near its current orbital radius to allow for a convergent migration of the two planets into the resonance. For the inferred damping-to-migration timescale ratio $\tau_e/\tau_a \simeq 0.02$, overstable librations in the resonance lead to a limit cycle with $A_\psi \simeq 80^\circ$ and $e_{\rm b}<0.1$. The system could have remained in this configuration for the greater part of the protoplanetary disk lifetime. If the gas disk was removed from inside out, this would have reduced the libration amplitude to $A_\psi \simeq 60^\circ$ and boosted $e_{\rm b}$ via the resonant interaction with TOI-216c. Our results suggest a relatively fast inner disk removal ($\sim 10^5$ yr). Another means of explaining the large libration amplitude is stochastic stirring from a (turbulent) gas disk. For that to work, overstable librations would need to be suppressed, $\tau_e/\tau_a \simeq 0.05$, and very strong turbulent stirring (or some other source of large stochastic forcing) would need to overcome the damping effects of gas. [abridged] We present a 1+1D global magnetically-driven disk accretion model that captures the essence of the MRI-driven accretion, without resorting to 3D global non-ideal MHD simulations. The gas dynamics is assumed to be solely controlled by the MRI and hydrodynamic instabilities. For given stellar and disk parameters, the Shakura-Sunyaev viscosity parameter $\alpha$ is determined self-consistently under the framework of viscously-driven accretion from detailed considerations of the MRI with non-ideal MHD effects (Ohmic resistivity and ambipolar diffusion), accounting for disk heating by stellar irradiation, non-thermal sources of ionization, and dust effects on the ionization chemistry. Additionally, the magnetic field strength is constrained and adopted to maximize the MRI activity. We demonstrate the use of our framework by investigating steady-state MRI-driven accretion in a fiducial protoplanetary disk model around a solar-type star. We find that the equilibrium solution displays no pressure maximum at the dead zone outer edge, except if a sufficient amount of dust particles have accumulated there before the disk reaches a steady-state accretion regime. Furthermore, the steady-state accretion solution describes a disk that displays a spatially extended long-lived inner disk gas reservoir (the dead zone) accreting a few $10^{-9}\, M_{\odot}.\rm{yr}^{-1}$. By conducting a detailed parameter study, we find that the extend to which the MRI can drive efficient accretion is primarily determined by the total disk gas mass, the representative grain size, the vertically-integrated dust-to-gas mass ratio, and the stellar X-ray luminosity. A self-consistent time-dependent coupling between gas, dust, stellar evolution models and our general framework on million-year timescales is required to fully understand the formation of dead zones and their potential to trap dust particles., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

High-angular resolution observations at sub-millimeter/millimeter wavelengths of disks surrounding young stars have shown that their morphology is made of azimuthally-symmetric or point-symmetric substructures, in some cases with spiral arms, localized spur- or crescent-shaped features. The majority of theoretical studies with the aim of interpreting the observational results have focused on disk models with planets, under the assumption that the disk substructures are due to the disk-planet interaction. However, so far only in very few cases exoplanets have been detected in these systems. Furthermore, some substructures are expected to appear \textit{before} planets form, as they are necessary to drive the concentration of small solids which can lead to the formation of planetesimals. In this work we present observational predictions from high-resolution 3D radiative hydrodynamical models which follow the evolution of gas and solids in a protoplanetary disk. We focus on substructures in the distribution of millimeter-sized and smaller solid particles produced by the vertical shear instability. We show that their characteristics are compatible with some of the shallow gaps detected in recent observations at sub-mm/mm wavelengths, and present predictions for future observations with better sensitivity and angular resolution with ALMA and a Next Generation Very Large Array., Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Context. Dynamical and turbulent motions of gas in a protoplanetary disk are crucial for their evolution and affect planet formation. Recent observations suggest weak turbulence in the disk's outer regions. However, the physical mechanism of turbulence in these outer regions remains uncertain. The vertical shear instability (VSI) is a promising mechanism to produce turbulence in disks. Aims. Our aim is to study the observability of the gas velocity structure produced by the VSI via CO kinematics with ALMA. Methods. We perform global 3D hydrodynamical simulations of a VSI-unstable disk. We post-process the simulation results with radiative transfer calculations, and produce synthetic predictions of CO rotational emission lines. Following, we compute the line of sight velocity map, and its deviations from a sub-Keplerian equilibrium solution. We explore the detectability of the VSI by identifying kinematic signatures using realistic simulated observations. Results. Our 3D simulations of the VSI show the steady state dynamics of the gas in great detail. From the velocity structure we infer a turbulent stress value of $\alpha_{r\phi}=1.4 \times 10^{-4}$. On large scales, we observe velocity deviations of 50 m s$^{-1}$ as axisymmetric rings. We find optimal conditions at $i \lesssim 20^{\circ}$ to trace for the kinematic structures of the VSI. We found that current diagnostics to constrain gas turbulence from non-thermal broadening of the line emission are not applicable to anisotropic VSI turbulence. Conclusions. The detection of kinematic signatures produced by the VSI is possible with ALMA. Observations including an extended antenna configuration combined with the highest spectral resolution available are needed for robust detection. Recent millimeter and infrared observations have shown that gap and ring-like structures are common in both dust thermal emission and scattered-light of protoplanetary disks. We investigate the impact of the so-called Thermal Wave Instability (TWI) on the millimeter and infrared scattered-light images of disks. We perform 1+1D simulations of the TWI and confirm that the TWI operates when the disk is optically thick enough for stellar light, i.e., small-grain-to-gas mass ratio of $\gtrsim0.0001$. The mid-plane temperature varies as the waves propagate and hence gap and ring structures can be seen in both millimeter and infrared emission. The millimeter substructures can be observed even if the disk is fully optically thick since it is induced by the temperature variation, while density-induced substructures would disappear in the optically thick regime. The fractional separation between TWI-induced ring and gap is $\Delta r/r \sim$ 0.2-0.4 at $\sim$ 10-50 au, which is comparable to those found by ALMA. Due to the temperature variation, snow lines of volatile species move radially and multiple snow lines are observed even for a single species. The wave propagation velocity is as fast as $\sim$ 0.6 ${\rm au~yr^{-1}}$, which can be potentially detected with a multi-epoch observation with a time separation of a few years., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

In the recent years, sub/mm observations of protoplanetary disks have discovered an incredible diversity of substructures in the dust emission. An important result was the finding that dust grains of mm size are embedded in very thin dusty disks. This implies that the dust mass fraction in the midplane becomes comparable to the gas, increasing the importance of the interaction between the two components there. We address this problem by means of numerical 2.5D simulations in order to study the gas and dust interaction in fully global stratified disks. To this purpose, we employ the recently developed dust grain module in the PLUTO code. Our model focuses on a typical T Tauri disk model, simulating a short patch of the disk at 10 au which includes grains of constant Stokes number of $St=0.01$ and $St=0.1$, corresponding to grains with sizes of 0.9 cm and 0.9 mm, respectively, for the given disk model. By injecting a constant pebble flux at the outer domain, the system reaches a quasi steady state of turbulence and dust concentrations driven by the streaming instability. For our given setup and using resolutions up to 2500 cells per scale height we resolve the streaming instability, leading to local dust clumping and concentrations. Our results show dust density values of around 10-100 times the gas density with a steady state pebble flux between $3.5 \times 10^{-4}$ and $2.5 \times 10^{-3} M_{\rm Earth}/\mathit{year}$ for the models with $\mathit{St}=0.01$ and $\mathit{St}=0.1$. The grain size and pebble flux for model $\mathit{St}=0.01$ compares well with dust evolution models of the first million years of disk evolution. For those grains the scatter opacity dominates the extinction coefficient at mm wavelengths. These types of global dust and gas simulations are a promising tool for studies of the gas and dust evolution at pressure bumps in protoplanetary disks., Comment: accepted at A&A

Sub-millimeter spectral line and continuum emission from the protoplanetary disks and envelopes of protostars are powerful probes of their structure, chemistry, and dynamics. Here we present a benchmark study of our modeling code, RadChemT, that for the first time uses a chemical model to reproduce ALMA C$^{18}$O (2-1) and CARMA $^{12}$CO (1-0) and N$_{2}$H$^{+}$ (1-0) observations of L1527, that allow us to distinguish the disk, the infalling envelope and outflow of this Class 0/I protostar. RadChemT combines dynamics, radiative transfer, gas chemistry and gas-grain reactions to generate models which can be directly compared with observations for individual protostars. Rather than individually fit abundances to a large number of free parameters, we aim to best match the spectral line maps by (i) adopting a physical model based on density structure and luminosity derived primarily from previous work that fit SED and 2D imaging data, updating it to include a narrow jet detected in CARMA and ALMA data near ($\leq 75$au) the protostar, and then (ii) computing the resulting astrochemical abundances for 292 chemical species. Our model reproduces the C$^{18}$O and N$_{2}$H$^{+}$ line strengths within a factor of 3.0; this is encouraging considering the pronounced abundance variation (factor $> 10^3$) between the outflow shell and CO snowline region near the midplane. Further, our modeling confirms suggestions regarding the anti-correlation between N$_{2}$H$^{+}$ and the CO snowline between 400 au to 2,000 au from the central star. Our modeling tools represent a new and powerful capability with which to exploit the richness of spectral line imaging provided by modern submillimeter interferometers., Comment: 25 pages, 9 figures, and 7 tables. We present 1.3 mm continuum ALMA long-baseline observations at 3-5 au resolution of 10 of the brightest discs from the Ophiuchus DIsc Survey Employing ALMA (ODISEA) project. We identify a total of 26 narrow rings and gaps distributed in 8 sources and 3 discs with small dust cavities (r $<$10 au). We find that two discs around embedded protostars lack the clear gaps and rings that are ubiquitous in more evolved sources with Class II SEDs. Our sample includes 5 objects with previously known large dust cavities (r $>$20 au). We find that the 1.3 mm radial profiles of these objects are in good agreement with those produced by numerical simulations of dust evolution and planet-disc interactions, which predict the accumulation of mm-sized grains at the edges of planet-induced cavities. Our long-baseline observations resulted in the largest sample of discs observed at $\sim$3-5 au resolution in any given star-forming region (15 objects when combined with Ophiuchus objects in the DSHARP Large Program) and allow for a demographic study of the brightest $\sim5\%$ of the discs in Ophiuchus (i.e. the most likely formation sites of giant planets in the cloud). We use this unique sample to propose an evolutionary sequence and discuss a scenario in which the substructures observed in massive protoplanetary discs are mainly the result of planet formation and dust evolution. If this scenario is correct, the detailed study of disc substructures might provide a window to investigate a population of planets that remains mostly undetectable by other techniques., Comment: 21 pages, 10 figures. In recent years hydrodynamical (HD) models have become important to describe the gas kinematics in protoplanetary disks, especially in combination with models of photoevaporation and/or magnetic-driven winds. We focus on diagnosing the the vertical extent of the VSI at 203 cells per scale height and allude at what resolution per scale height we obtain convergence. Finally, we determine the regions where EUV, FUV and X-Rays are dominant in the disk. We perform global HD simulations using the PLUTO code. We adopt a global isothermal accretion disk setup, 2.5D (2 dimensions, 3 components) which covers a radial domain from 0.5 to 5.0 and an approximately full meridional extension. We determine the 50 cells per scale height to be the lower limit to resolve the VSI. For higher resolutions, greater than 50 cells per scale height, we observe the convergence for the saturation level of the kinetic energy. We are also able to identify the growth of the `body' modes, with higher growth rate for higher resolution. Full energy saturation and a turbulent steady state is reached after 70 local orbits. We determine the location of the EUV-heated region defined by the radial column density to be 10$^{19}$ cm$^{-2}$ located at $H_\mathrm{R}\sim9.7$, and the FUV/X-Rays-heated boundary layer defined by 10$^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ located at $H_\mathrm{R}\sim6.2$, making it necessary to introduce the need of a hot atmosphere. For the first time, we report the presence of small scale vortices in the r-Z plane, between the characteristic layers of large scale vertical velocity motions. Such vortices could lead to dust concentration, promoting grain growth. Our results highlight the importance to combine photoevaporation processes in the future high-resolution studies of the turbulence and accretion processes in disks.

ISO-Oph 2 is a wide-separation (240 au) binary system where the primary star harbors a massive (M$_{dust}$ $\sim$40 M$_{\oplus}$) ring-like disk with a dust cavity $\sim$50 au in radius and the secondary hosts a much lighter (M$_{dust}$ $\sim$0.8 M$_{\oplus}$) disk. As part of the high-resolution follow-up of the "Ophiuchus Disk Survey Employing ALMA" (ODISEA) project, we present 1.3 mm continuum and $^{12}$CO molecular line observations of the system at 0''02 (3 au) resolution. We resolve the disk around the primary into two non-axisymmetric rings and find that the disk around the secondary is only $\sim$7 au across and also has a dust cavity (r $\sim$2.2 au). Based on the infrared flux ratio of the system and the M0 spectral type of the primary, we estimate the mass of the companion to be close to the brown dwarf limit. Hence, we conclude that the ISO-Oph 2 system contains the largest and smallest cavities, the smallest measured disk size, and the resolved cavity around the lowest mass object (M$_{\star}$ $\sim$0.08 M$_\odot$) in Ophiuchus. From the $^{12}$CO data, we find a bridge of gas connecting both disks. While the morphology of the rings around the primary might be due to an unseen disturber within the cavity, we speculate that the bridge might indicate an alternative scenario in which the secondary has recently flown by the primary star causing the azimuthal asymmetries in its disk. Theoretical models of protoplanetary disks have shown the Vertical Shear Instability (VSI) to be a prime candidate to explain turbulence in the dead zone of the disk. However, simulations of the VSI have yet to show consistent levels of key disk turbulence parameters like the stress-to-pressure ratio $\alpha$. We aim to reconcile these different values by performing a parameter study on the VSI with focus on the disk density gradient $p$ and aspect ratio $h := H/R$. We use full 2$\pi$ 3D simulations of the disk for chosen set of both parameters. All simulations are evolved for 1000 reference orbits, at a resolution of 18 cells per h. We find that the saturated stress-to-pressure ratio in our simulations is dependent on the disk aspect ratio with a \review{strong} scaling of $\alpha\propto h^{2.6}$, in contrast to the traditional $\alpha$ model, where viscosity scales as $\nu \propto \alpha h^2$ with a constant $\alpha$. We also observe consistent formation of large scale vortices across all investigated parameters. The vortices show uniformly aspect ratios of $\chi \approx 10$ and radial widths of approximately 1.5 $H$. With our findings we can reconcile the different values reported for the stress-to-pressure ratio from both isothermal and radiation hydrodynamics models, and show long-term evolution effects of the VSI that could aide in the formation of planetesimals., Comment: 15 pages, 18 figures, submitted to MNRAS

The search for young planets had its first breakthrough with the detection of the accreting planet PDS70b. In this study, we aim to broaden our understanding towards the formation of multi-planet systems such as HR8799 or the Solar System. Our previous study on HD169142, one of the closest Herbig stars, points towards a shadow-casting protoplanetary candidate. Here, we present follow-up observations to test our previously proposed hypothesis. We set our new data into context with previous observations to follow structural changes in the disk over the course of 6 years. We find spatially resolved systematic changes in the position of the previously described surface brightness dip in the inner ring. We further find changes in the brightness structure in azimuthal direction along the ring. And finally, a comparison of our SPHERE data with recent ALMA observations reveals a wavelength dependent radial profile of the bright ring. The time-scale on which the changes in the ring's surface brightness occur suggest that they are caused by a shadow cast by a 1-10Mj planet surrounded by dust, an orbit comparable to those of the giant planets in our own Solar System. Additionally, we find the first indications for temperature-induced instabilities in the ring. And finally, we trace a pressure maxima, for the first time spatially resolved, with a width of 4.5au. Theoretical models of the ionization state in protoplanetary disks suggest the existence of large areas with low ionization and weak coupling between the gas and magnetic fields. In this regime hydrodynamical instabilities may become important. In this work we investigate the gas and dust structure and dynamics for a typical T Tauri system under the influence of the vertical shear instability (VSI). We use global 3D radiation hydrodynamics simulations covering all $360^\circ$ of azimuth with embedded particles of 0.1 and 1mm size, evolved for 400 orbits. Stellar irradiation heating is included with opacities for 0.1- to 10-$\mu$m-sized dust. Saturated VSI turbulence produces a stress-to-pressure ratio of $\alpha \simeq 10^{-4}$. The value of $\alpha$ is lowest within 30~au of the star, where thermal relaxation is slower relative to the orbital period and approaches the rate below which VSI is cut off. The rise in $\alpha$ from 20 to 30~au causes a dip in the surface density near 35~au, leading to Rossby wave instability and the generation of a stationary, long-lived vortex spanning about 4~au in radius and 40~au in azimuth. Our results confirm previous findings that mm size grains are strongly vertically mixed by the VSI. The scale height aspect ratio for 1mm grains is determined to be 0.037, much higher than the value $H/r=0.007$ obtained from millimeter-wave observations of the HL~Tau system. The measured aspect ratio is better fit by non-ideal MHD models. In our VSI turbulence model, the mm grains drift radially inwards and many are trapped and concentrated inside the vortex. The turbulence induces a velocity dispersion of $\sim 12$~m/s for the mm grains, indicating that grain-grain collisions could lead to fragmentation., Comment: ApJ accepted

We present a numerical code for radiation hydrodynamics designed as a module for the freely available PLUTO code. We adopt a gray approximation and include radiative transfer following a two-moment approach by imposing the M1 closure to the radiation fields. This closure allows for a description of radiative transport in both the diffusion and free-streaming limits, and is able to describe highly anisotropic radiation transport as can be expected in the vicinity of an accreting planet in a protoplanetary disk. To reduce the computational cost caused by the timescale disparity between radiation and matter fields, we integrate their evolution equations separately in an operator-split way, using substepping to evolve the radiation equations. We further increase the code's efficiency by adopting the reduced speed of light approximation (RSLA). Our integration scheme for the evolution equations of radiation fields relies on implicit-explicit schemes, in which radiation-matter interaction terms are integrated implicitly while fluxes are integrated via Godunov-type solvers. The module is suitable for general astrophysical computations in 1, 2, and 3 dimensions in Cartesian, spherical and cylindrical coordinates, and can be implemented on rotating frames. We demonstrate the algorithm performance on different numerical benchmarks, paying particular attention to the applicability of the RSLA for computations of physical processes in protoplanetary disks. Stars form as an end product of the gravitational collapse of cold, dense gas in magnetized molecular clouds. This multi-scale scenario occurs via the formation of two quasi-hydrostatic cores and involves complex physical processes, which require a robust, self-consistent numerical treatment. The aim of this study is to understand the formation and evolution of the second Larson core and the dependence of its properties on the initial cloud core mass. We used the PLUTO code to perform high resolution, 1D and 2D RHD collapse simulations. We include self-gravity and use a grey FLD approximation for the radiative transfer. Additionally, we use for the gas EOS density- and temperature-dependent thermodynamic quantities to account for the effects such as dissociation, ionisation, and molecular vibrations and rotations. Properties of the second core are investigated using 1D studies spanning a wide range of initial cloud core masses from 0.5 to 100 $M_{\odot}$. Furthermore, we expand to 2D collapse simulations for a few cases of 1, 5, 10, and 20 $M_{\odot}$. We follow the evolution of the second core for $\geq$ 100 years after its formation, for each of these non-rotating cases. Our results indicate a dependence of several second core properties on the initial cloud core mass. For the first time, due to an unprecedented resolution, our 2D non-rotating collapse studies indicate that convection is generated in the outer layers of the second core, which is formed due to the gravitational collapse of a 1 $M_{\odot}$ cloud core. Additionally, we find large-scale oscillations of the second accretion shock front triggered by the standing accretion shock instability, which has not been seen before in early evolutionary stages of stars. We predict that the physics within the second core would not be significantly influenced by the effects of magnetic fields or an initial cloud rotation., Comment: 22 pages, 20 figures, and 2 tables. The increasing number of newly detected exoplanets at short orbital periods raises questions about their formation and migration histories. A particular puzzle that requires explanation arises from one of the key results of the Kepler mission, namely the increase in the planetary occurrence rate with orbital period up to 10 days for F, G, K and M stars. We investigate the conditions for planet formation and migration near the dust sublimation front in protostellar disks around young Sun-like stars. For this analysis we use iterative 2D radiation hydrostatic disk models which include irradiation by the star, and dust sublimation and deposition depending on the local temperature and vapor pressure. We perform a parameter study by varying the magnetized turbulence onset temperature, the accretion stress, the dust mass fraction, and the mass accretion rate. Our models feature a gas-only inner disk, a silicate sublimation front and dust rim starting at around 0.08 au, an ionization transition zone with a corresponding density jump, and a pressure maximum which acts as a pebble trap at around 0.12 au. Migration torque maps show Earth- and super-Earth-mass planets halt in our model disks at orbital periods ranging from 10 to 22 days. Such periods are in good agreement with both the inferred location of the innermost planets in multiplanetary systems, and the break in planet occurrence rates from the Kepler sample at 10 days. In particular, models with small grains depleted produce a trap located at a 10-day orbital period, while models with a higher abundance of small grains present a trap at around a 17-day orbital period. The snow line lies at 1.6 au, near where the occurrence rate of the giant planets peaks. Understanding planet formation requires to discern how dust grows in protoplanetary disks. An important parameter to measure in disks is the maximum dust grain size present. This is usually estimated through measurements of the dust opacity at different millimeter wavelengths assuming optically thin emission and dust opacity dominated by absorption. However, ALMA observations have shown that these assumptions might not be correct in the case of protoplanetary disks, leading to overestimation of particle sizes and to underestimation of the disk's mass. Here, we present an analysis of high quality ALMA and VLA images of the HL Tau protoplanetary disk, covering a wide range of wavelengths, from 0.8 mm to 1 cm, and with a physical resolution of $\sim$7.35 au. We describe a procedure to analyze a set of millimeter images without any assumption about the optical depth of the emission, and including the effects of absorption and scattering in the dust opacity. This procedure allows us to obtain the dust temperature, the dust surface density and the maximum particle size at each radius. In the HL Tau disk, we found that particles have already grown up to a few millimeters in size. We detect differences in the dust properties between dark and bright rings, with dark rings containing low dust density and small dust particles. Different features in the HL Tau disk seem to have different origins. Planet-disk interactions can explain substructure at the external half of the disk, but the internal rings seem to be associated to the presence of snow lines of several molecules.

We present a detailed multi-wavelength characterization of the multi-ring disk of HD 169142. We report new ALMA observations at 3 mm and analyze them together with archival 0.89 and 1.3 mm data. Our observations resolve three out of the four rings in the disk previously seen in high-resolution ALMA data. A simple parametric model is used to estimate the radial profile of the dust optical depth, temperature, density, and particle size distribution. We find that the multiple ring features of the disk are produced by annular accumulations of large particles, probably associated with gas pressure bumps. Our model indicates that the maximum dust grain size in the rings is $\sim1$ cm, with slightly flatter power-law size distributions than the ISM-like size distribution ($p\sim3.5$) found in the gaps. In particular, the inner ring ($\sim26$ au) is associated with a strong and narrow buildup of dust particles that could harbor the necessary conditions to trigger the streaming instability. According to our analysis, the snowlines of the most important volatiles do not coincide with the observed substructures. We explore different ring formation mechanisms and find that planet-disk interactions are the most likely scenario to explain the main features of HD 169142. Overall, our multi-wavelength analysis provides some of the first unambiguous evidence of the presence of radial dust traps in the rings of HD 169142. ALMA observations revealed recently polarised radiation of several protoplanetary disks in the (sub-)millimetre wavelength range. Besides self-scattering of large particles, thermal emission by elongated grains is a potential source for the detected polarisation signal. We calculate the wavelength dependent absorption and intrinsic polarisation of spheroidally shaped, micrometre and sub-millimetre sized dust grains using the discrete dipole approximation. In particular, we analyse the impact of dust grain porosity which appears to be present in disks when small grains coagulate to form larger aggregates. For the first time our results show that (a) the intrinsic polarisation decreases for increasing grain porosity and (b) the polarisation orientation flips by 90 degree for certain ratios of wavelength to grain size. We present a new method to constrain grain porosity and the grain size in protoplanetary disks using multi-wavelength polarisation observations in the far-infrared to millimetre wavelengths. Finally, we find that moderate grain porosities ($\mathcal{P}\lesssim0.7$) potentially explain the observed polarisation fraction in the system HD 142527 while highly porous grains ($\mathcal{P}>0.7$) fail unless the grain's axis ratio is extraordinarily large., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

We study dust concentration in axisymmetric gas rings in protoplanetary disks. Given the gas surface density, we derived an analytical total dust surface density by taking into account the differential concentration of all the grain sizes. This model allows us to predict the local dust-to-gas mass ratio and the slope of the particle size distribution, as a function of radius. We test this analytical model comparing it with a 3D magneto-hydrodynamical simulation of dust evolution in an accretion disk. The model is also applied to the disk around HD 169142. By fitting the disk continuum observations simultaneously at $\lambda = 0.87$, 1.3, 3.0 mm, we obtain a global dust-to-gas mass ratio $\epsilon_{\rm global} = 1.05 \times 10^{-2}$ and a viscosity coefficient $\alpha = 1.35 \times 10^{-2}$. This model can be easily implemented in numerical simulations of accretion disks.

We perform simulations of the dust and gas disk evolution to investigate the observational features of a dust-pileup at the dead-zone inner edge. We show that the total mass of accumulated dust particles is sensitive to the turbulence strength in the dead zone, $\alpha_{\rm dead}$, because of the combined effect of turbulence-induced particle fragmentation (which suppresses particle radial drift) and turbulent diffusion. For a typical critical fragmentation velocity of silicate dust particles of $1~{\rm m~s^{-1}}$, the stress to pressure ratio $\alpha_{\rm dead}$ needs to be lower than $3 \times 10^{-4}$ for dust trapping to operate. The obtained dust distribution is postprocessed using the radiative transfer code RADMC-3D to simulate infrared scattered-light images of the inner part of protoplanetary disks with a dust pileup. We find that a dust pileup at the dead-zone inner edge, if present, casts a shadow extending out to $\sim 10~{\rm au}$. In the shadowed region the temperature significantly drops, which in some cases yields even multiple water snow lines. We also find that even without a dust pileup at the dead-zone inner edge, the disk surface can become thermally unstable, and the excited waves can naturally produce shadows and ring-like structures in observed images. We present a survey of optical [OI] emission at 6300 \AA\ toward 65 TTauri stars at the spectral resolution of $\sim7$ km/s. Past work identified a highly blueshifted velocity component (HVC) tracing microjets, and a less blueshifted low-velocity-component (LVC) attributed to winds. We focus here on the LVC kinematics to investigate links between winds, jets, accretion, and disk dispersal. We track the behavior of four types of LVC components: a broad and narrow component ("BC" and "NC") in LVCs that are decomposed into two Gaussians, which typically have an HVC, and the single-Gaussian LVC profiles separated into those that have an HVC ("SCJ") and those that do not ("SC"). LVC centroid velocities and line widths correlate with HVC equivalent width and accretion luminosity, suggesting that LVC/winds and HVC/jets are kinematically linked and connected to accretion. The deprojected HVC velocity correlates with accretion luminosity, showing that faster jets come with higher accretion. BC and NC kinematics correlate and their blueshifts are maximum at $\sim 35^{\circ}$, suggesting a conical wind geometry with this semi-opening angle. Only SCs include $n_{13-31}$ up to $\sim3$ and their properties correlate with this infrared index, showing that [OI] emission recedes to larger radii as the inner dust is depleted, tracing less dense/hot gas and a decrease in wind velocity. All together, these findings support a scenario where optically thick, accreting inner disks launch radially-extended MHD disk winds that feed jets, and where inner disk winds recede to larger radii and jets disappear in concert with dust depletion., Comment: Accepted for publication on ApJ

Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) and photoevaporative winds are thought to play an important role in the evolution and dispersal of planet-forming disks. We report the first high-resolution ($\Delta v\sim$6\kms) analysis of [S II] $\lambda$4068, [O I] $\lambda$5577, and [O I] $\lambda$6300 lines from a sample of 48 T Tauri stars. Following Simon et al. (2016), we decompose them into three kinematic components: a high-velocity component (HVC) associated with jets, and a low-velocity narrow (LVC-NC) and broad (LVC-BC) components. We confirm previous findings that many LVCs are blueshifted by more than 1.5 kms$^{-1}$ thus most likely trace a slow disk wind. We further show that the profiles of individual components are similar in the three lines. We find that most LVC-BC and NC line ratios are explained by thermally excited gas with temperatures between 5,000$-$10,000 K and electron densities $\sim10^{7}-10^{8}$ cm$^{-3}$. The HVC ratios are better reproduced by shock models with a pre-shock H number density of $\sim10^{6}-10^{7}$ cm$^{-3}$. Using these physical properties, we estimate $\dot{M}_{\rm wind}/\dot{M}_{\rm acc}$ for the LVC and $\dot{M}_{\rm jet}/\dot{M}_{\rm acc}$ for the HVC. In agreement with previous work, the mass carried out in jets is modest compared to the accretion rate. With the likely assumption that the NC wind height is larger than the BC, the LVC-BC $\dot{M}_{\rm wind}/\dot{M}_{\rm acc}$ is found to be higher than the LVC-NC. These results suggest that most of the mass loss occurs close to the central star, within a few au, through an MHD driven wind. Dwarf novae (DNe) are accreting white dwarfs that show eruptions due to a thermal-viscous instability in the accretion disk. The outburst timescales constrain $\alpha$, the ratio of the viscous stress to the thermal pressure, and so the mechanism of angular momentum transport. The eruptive state has $\alpha\approx0.1$ while the quiescent state has $\alpha\approx0.03$. Turbulent transport due to the magneto-rotational instability (MRI) is generally considered to be the source of angular momentum transport in DNe. Here, we perform 3D local magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) shearing box simulations including vertical stratification, radiative transfer and a net constant vertical magnetic flux to investigate how transport changes between the outburst and quiescent states of DNe. We find that a constant $B_z$ provides a higher $\alpha$ in quiescence than in outburst, in opposition to what is expected. Including resistivity quenches MRI turbulence in quiescence, suppressing transport, unless the magnetic field is high enough, which again leads to $\alpha\approx0.1$. A major difference between simulations with a net poloidal flux and simulations without is that angular momentum transport in the former is shared between turbulent and wind-driven transport. We find that wind-driven transport dominates in quiescence even for low magnetic fields $\sim 1$ G. This can have a major impact on observational signatures since wind-driven transport does not heat the disk. Furthermore, wind transport cannot be reduced to an $\alpha$ prescription. We provide fits for $\alpha$ and the wind torque with $\beta$, ratio of thermal to magnetic pressure. We conclude that the evolution of the thermal-viscous instability, and its consequences on the outburst cycles of CVs, needs to be seriously revised to take into account that most of the accretion energy may be carried away by a wind instead of being locally dissipated., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, accepted in A&A. Observations of multiple rotational transitions from a single molecule allow for unparalleled constraints on the physical conditions of the emitting region. We present an analysis of CS in TW~Hya using the $J=7-6$, $5-4$ and $3-2$ transitions imaged at $\sim 0.5^{\prime\prime}$ spatial resolution, resulting in a temperature and column density profile of the CS emission region extending out to 230~au, far beyond previous measurements. In addition, the 15~kHz resolution of the observations and the ability to directly estimate the temperature of the CS emitting gas, allow for one of the most sensitive searches for turbulent broadening in a disk to date. Limits of $v_{\rm turb} \lesssim 0.1 c_s$ can be placed across the entire radius of the disk. We are able to place strict limits of the local H$_2$ density due to the collisional excitations of the observed transitions. From these we find that a minimum disk mass of $3 \times 10^{-4}~M_{\rm sun}$ is required to be consistent with the CS excitation conditions and can uniquely constrain the gas surface density profile in the outer disk., Comment: Accepted by ApJ

The discovery of thousands of exoplanets over the last couple of decades has shown that the birth of planets is a very efficient process in nature. Theories invoke a multitude of mechanisms to describe the assembly of planets in the disks around pre-main-sequence stars, but observational constraints have been sparse on account of insufficient sensitivity and resolution. Understanding how planets form and interact with their parental disk is crucial also to illuminate the main characteristics of a large portion of the full population of planets that is inaccessible to current and near-future observations. Planets are born in protostellar disks, which are now observed with enough resolution to address questions about internal gas flows. Candidates for driving the flows include magnetic forces, but ionization state estimates suggest much of the gas mass decouples from magnetic fields. Thus, hydrodynamical instabilities could play a major role. We investigate disk dynamics under conditions typical for a T Tauri system, using global 3D radiation hydrodynamics simulations with embedded particles and a resolution of 70 cells per scale height. Stellar irradiation heating is included with realistic dust opacities. The disk starts in joint radiative balance and hydrostatic equilibrium. The vertical shear instability (VSI) develops into turbulence that persists up to at least 1600 inner orbits (143 outer orbits). Turbulent speeds are a few percent of the local sound speed at the midplane, increasing to 20%, or 100 m/s, in the corona. These are consistent with recent upper limits on turbulent speeds from optically thin and thick molecular line observations of TW Hya and HD 163296. The predominantly vertical motions induced by the VSI efficiently lift particles upwards. Grains 0.1 and 1 mm in size achieve scale heights greater than expected in isotropic turbulence. We conclude that while kinematic constraints from molecular line emission do not directly discriminate between magnetic and nonmagnetic disk models, the small dust scale heights measured in HL Tau and HD 163296 favor turbulent magnetic models, which reach lower ratios of the vertical kinetic energy density to the accretion stress., Comment: Accepted for ApJ

Recent observations of the protoplanetary disk around the Herbig Be star HD 100546 show two bright features in infrared (H and L' bands) at about 50 AU, with one so far unexplained. We explore the observational signatures of a high mass planet causing shock heating in order to determine if it could be the source of the unexplained infrared feature in HD 100546. More fundamentally, we identify and characterize planetary shocks as an extra, hitherto ignored, source of luminosity in transition disks. The RADMC-3D code is used to perform dust radiative transfer calculations on the hydrodynamical disk models, including volumetric heating. A stronger shock heating rate by a factor 20 would be necessary to qualitatively reproduce the morphology of the second infrared source. Instead, we find that the outer edge of the gap carved by the planet heats up by about 50% relative to the initial reference temperature, which leads to an increase in the scale height. The bulge is illuminated by the central star, producing a lopsided feature in scattered light, as the outer gap edge shows an asymmetry in density and temperature attributable to a secondary spiral arm launched not from the Lindblad resonances but from the 2:1 resonance. We conclude that high-mass planets lead to shocks in disks that may be directly observed, particularly at wavelengths of 10 mm or longer, but that they are more likely to reveal their presence in scattered light by puffing up their outer gap edges and exciting multiple spiral arms.
