Abstract

This research was designed to investigate possible mechanisms that fires could initiate that might lead to collapse of a tall building of similar design to the WTC Towers. It was not designed to be a forensic study and no initial damage was applied to the structure. The effects of fire on long span, truss based floor systems was investigated both locally and globally using finite element models.

Abstract

This paper reports on an investigation of the effects of fire on long span truss floor systems in a tall building environment. The effects of fire spread over multiple floors of a building are the focus of this research, especially where this may lead to progressive collapse. The results from an investigation of a two-dimensional model of a multistory office building analysis are presented. The model is representative of the type of construction used in the World Trade Center Towers 1 and 2. The local and global response of the model is described over the course of a concurrent fire on three floors reaching a peak compartment temperature of 800[degrees]C. The results of the analysis show that large displacements may occur in long span structural floor systems without failure, however, the interaction of the highly deflected floors with the exterior or perimeter columns can lead to structural collapse. Additional structural members, such as hat trusses, that allow redistribution of loads away from the exterior columns to the core columns have a significant beneficial impact on the robustness of the structure. Abstract

This paper presents a summary of the author’s investigation into the collapse of tall buildings. A large number of computational analyses have been carried out at the University of Edinburgh (UoE) over the last 4 years in order to understand the collapse of the tall buildings of the World Trade Center (WTC) complex on September 11, 2001 following the terrorist attacks that day. The aim of these analyses has no been to carry out a “forensic” investigation (as this was done by official US government sponsored investigation by NIST, see wtc.nist.gov). The primary purpose of the UoE investigations was to understand the global collapse mechanisms of tall buildings as a result of extensive (involving multiple floors) fires and from these analyses identify any “generic” collapse mechanisms that may or may not exist. Such identification will allow the development of new design methods resulting in enhancing the safety and robustness of tall buildings again fire.

10. Innovative Structural Engineering for Tall Buildings in Fire

Abstract

In response to public demand for safer structures and the commercial drive for robust structural fire design post 9–11, the authors have carried out a number of analyses of the behaviour of long span floor systems including composite cellular beams and composite truss floors similar to the World Trade Centre (WTC) 1 and 2 buildings. The research has considered single and multi-storey fires.For scenarios where fires have been assumed to act over several storeys simultaneously this research is beginning to identify potential global progressive collapse mechanisms in the different long-span floor systems studied. Wherever possible, failure mechanisms are being validated against evidence from the real fires such as those of WTC, Torre Windsor, and others. The research studies so far have provided a substantial increase in the understanding of the whole frame response of high-rise buildings in fire, but the work continues to progress as new structural designs are being analyzed.The intent is that this new understanding will form the basis of design including where appropriate, and always based on a risk assessment, design against structural failure induced by fires. The aim is to propose structural designs that do not rely solely on traditional fire protection measures, but have specific structural detailing that can demonstrate their capability to withstand these events. In other words, they are intrinsically robust rather than totally reliant on added safety measures that can fail in extreme events. This paper will present some of the results of this recent research and show how it is being implemented in design through a case study on a high-rise office building proposed in the UK.
