30. Archival Activism: Independent and Community-led Archives, Radical Public History and the Heritage Professions

Abstract

Drawing on recent research (mainly focused on the UK) this article explores developments in independent, non-professionalized archival and heritage activity and reflects on two dimensions of archival activism. First, this article examines those projects and endeavors which are actively engaged in radical or counter-hegemonic public history-making activities. These non-professional archival initiatives are best understood not as a form of leisure activity or antiquarianism but as social movement archival activism, often allied to a progressive, democratizing, and anti-discrimination political agenda. Second, this article also addresses the attitude of professional archivists and other heritage workers to these social movements. Whilst acknowledging the challenges involved, it suggests that if heritage workers are concerned with fostering more democratized and diverse historical collections then the archive and heritage professionals need to be prepared to actively seek out collaborations and form equitable partnerships with these social movements.

Abstract

The founding collection of the British Museum is a rich area to explore how we can reconnect dispersed heritage connections using state of the art technologies. This is because the British Museum's original 1753 founding collection of Sir Hans Sloane is now split across three different institutions (the British Museum (BM), Natural History Museum (NHM) and the British Library (BL)) and the digital information that describes this founding collection sits in the different institutions in a range of different systems that are not currently set up to talk to one another. By focusing on catalogue records, and the vast, remaining collections of Sir Hans Sloane, the Sloane Lab project is researching how we can work with interested communities and heritage organisations to link the present with the past so as to allow the currently broken links between Sloane's collections and catalogues to be re-established across the NHM, BL, BM (plus others that have relevant material). The main outcome of our project will be a freely available, online digital lab (the Sloane Lab) that will offer researchers, curators and the interested public new opportunities to search, explore, and critically and creatively use and reuse digital cultural heritage.

36. Prospects for socialism : the character and implantation of working-class activism in the Manchester area, 1933-1941

This thesis examines the success or otherwise of left-wing politics in the years 1933 to 1941. The study focuses on the cities and towns which broadly correspond to the modem administrative region of Greater Manchester. Rather than attempting another broad and inclusive history of the thirties, the methodology adopted is of a series of case studies. The region selected is notable for the diversity of all aspects of workingclass life, including work and politics. The case studies chosen, describing the experiences of left-wing activists in the engineering, railway and cotton industries, within the Irish Catholic and Jewish communities and as members of the Women's Cooperative Guild, reflect that diversity. This research concentrates on rank-and-file organisation and grass roots activism. The focus is not on trade union or party leaders but on strikers, shop stewards, branch secretaries,c onferenced elegatesa nd local party workers. The actions of thesep olitical militants are examined not only in terms of national events but equally importantly in the context of local economic and social factors. To achieve this, the records of national organisations are used in conjunction with extensive reference to local materials, oral history and other autobiographical sources. The case study approach allows for the examination and contrast of the effects of different factors such as class, gender, occupation, age, ethnicity, religious beliefs, culture, political traditions and economic circumstances on the implantation of socialism amongst working-class activists in differing communities in the 1930s. Among the questions considered are the relationship between industrial militancy and political radicalism; the links between the experience of class and political allegiance; the effects on the development of local Labour and Communist Parties of the enduring presence of other forms of working-class politics including Conservatism and non- Communist socialism; the extent to which the nineteen thirties can be said to complete the "double closure" of British socialism; how far the dominant organisations of labour politics failed to fully represent the interests of a heterogeneous working-class; the differences between the objectives of Labour Movement leaders and local activists; the outcome of the conflict between community (including religious) elites and left-wing parties; the relationship of feminism to 1930s Labour politics and the representation of gender issues by the dominant working-class organisations; the experience of generational differences in political conflict; the continued relevance of internationalism and anti-war sentiment in an era of anti-fascist alliances, and finally the relationship of the local to the national, the specific to the general.

39. Bridging the Gaps Between Communities and their Memories: Comparing Community-Based Archives in Five Countries

Abstract

While there is a developing international discussion on the topic of community archives in different parts of the world, there has not been any sustained attempt to study community-based archives within a comparative framework. The aim of the article is to initiate a more systematic and comparative discussion of the different realities of community archives internationally (measured against and perhaps critiquing the descriptions and definitions offered by the dominant Anglophone literature on the topic). This article draws upon the authors’ presentation at the ICA’s Rome 2022 Conference of their comparative analysis of the contexts, form, and operation of community archives in five different countries (Brazil, China, Poland, Portugal and the United Kingdom). The authors also put forward an initial set of six criteria they believe are useful for future international comparative approaches to understanding community archives: terminology and definitions; typologies and characteristics of the archives; recent history and social structure of the country/region; relationships with external entities; funding and support; law and national archival and heritage systems.
