Electrophoretic investigations of the serum protein patterns of natterjacks ( Bufo calamita Laur.) from the Iberian Peninsula and from Western and Central Europe, and of green toads ( Bufo viridis Laur.) from Central Europa, Asia Minor and North Africa show that the two species differ disctinctly in the position of their albumin fractions. The identification of problematic specimens can result from the production of mixed serum with specimens of both species. As the albumin fraction of hybrids is doubled according to this method, it is also suitable for demonstrating the existence of such hybrids in natural populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigated the possibility that adult fragile X [fra(X)] heterozygotes have a distinct or specific cognitive profile, with a particular focus on visuospatial and/or memory deficits. With a sample of 13 adult fra(X) female carriers (2 fra(X) positive) and age-matched control women, we performed 2 tests: Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (WAIS-R) and the Revised Visual Retention Test (RVRT). An identifiable cognitive profile was not evident in the study group, but significant differences were evident in RVRT performance in number correct and number of errors when compared to controls and normative data. The combination of the WAIS-R and RVRT data suggests that the short-term memory component of the tasks may be of more significance than visuospatial performance in the deficits observed.

Between 1970 and 1973, 14,069 consecutive liveborn infants at the Women's Centre, Winnipeg, were subjected to karyotypic analysis. The details of the materials and methods and the preliminary findings of the study have been previously published [1,2]. A total of 15 nonmosaic and 4 mosaic infants with sex chromosome anomalies were detected: 12 males and 7 females. These children have been followed wherever possible by physical and developmental evaluations, and preliminary findings have been reported previously [3]. In order to obtain further baseline data on these children while they were still prepubertal, it was decided to recontact all families and encourage them to present their children for further physical evaluation and psychologic testing. Details of these investigations and their results are given in this paper.
