5. DNA Synthesis Generates Terminal Duplications That Seal End-to-End Chromosome Fusions

Abstract

End-to-end chromosome fusions that occur in the context of telomerase deficiency can trigger genomic duplications. For over 70 years these duplications have been attributed solely to Breakage-Fusion-Bridge cycles. To test this hypothesis, we examined end-to-end fusions isolated from C. elegans telomere replication mutants. Genome level rearrangements revealed fused chromosome ends possessing interrupted terminal duplications accompanied by template switching events. These features are very similar to disease-associated duplications of interstitial segments of the human genome. A model termed Fork Stalling and Template Switching has been proposed previously to explain such duplications, where promiscuous replication of large, non-contiguous segments of the genome occurs. Thus, a DNA synthesis-based process may create duplications that seal end-to-end fusions, in the absence of Breakage-Fusion-Bridge cycles.

Abstract

The nucleus 68Ge has been studied by gamma-ray spectroscopy following its population at high spin in the reaction 40Ca(32S,4p) 68Ge. The reaction channel was selected with the Microball array and gamma rays were detected with the Gammasphere array. The level scheme is very complex, reflecting the many different, and presumably mixed, excitation modes in this nucleus. Nevertheless, there appear to be some simplifications in the spin range above 18ℏ where we have identified a superdeformed band and several terminating bands. The results are compared with a cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky model without pairing.

Abstract

If the critical reading of dominant media presents itself as a combat where the altermondialist movement must be active, the strategy of resistance to the diktats of the dominant ideologies also passes by the appropriation of most recent communication and information technologies and the creation of alternative media defending of the values other than those of the market, making it possible the social movements to reach a certain media emancipation. The initiatives going in this direction multiplied these last years, revealing the emergence of sociotechnic devices carried by an informational militancy whose existence even is due to the committal for trial of journalistic constructions and to the production of autonomous representations of the movement. One can undoubtedly advance the idea of the construction of a transnational media repertory suitable for the altermondialist movement, a media public space multiform, made communities of action and varied spaces of representation, and in which dimensions at the same time local, national and international interpenetrate in a strong way. Without having the means of advancing that such public spaces (such that they are given to see through case of Attac-information or other initiatives) contribute indeed to the mobilization of the action, one can undoubtedly more easily think than their existence at least makes it possible to ensure a better representation of the interests of the altermondialists fights and to contribute to construction of the symbolic system of the identities of a movement in full growth, beyond the militant circles which work directly with its construction. During former work, we defended the idea that, overall, these "new" public spaces were the place of a rebuilding of certain figures of social and political criticism and that they were carrying speech contradicting the idea of a depoliticization and an orientation towards testimony compassionnel of the public forms of expression. Although last research which we undertook (in particular the case of Attac-information) does not contradict the more marked character of the repertories of the public word, the attention which we carried here to the effective operation of the one of these informational spaces, leads us however to specify that the relative toughening of spaces of representation, does not attest to in no case in an automatic way of an ideological strengthening of the communities of action which carry them.

Abstract

Two sets of strongly coupled rotational bands have been identified in Zn-62. These bands have been observed up to the terminating states of their respective configurations. Lifetime measurements indicate that the transition quadrupole moments in these bands decrease as termination is approached. These results establish the first terminating states of rotational bands in the A similar to 60 mass region and confirm the predicted loss of collectivity associated with smooth band termination.

Abstract

Hydro-Québec has used a new approach for Reliability Assessment with a prototype called FIORD, a French acronym for a global reliability assessment system. What were the context and the reasons for these new developments? What's new in this approach? How does it work? What did it bring? In the context of recommending a distribution MV grid automation program, Hydro-Québec had to evaluate the benefits of various automation scenarios in order to compare the expected improvements with the present situation. The study had to cover the entire distribution MV grid, using input data representing correctly the present situation and simulation techniques which are sensitive to various scenarios according to the improvements brought by new technologies. In order to fulfill these requirements, a new global approach had to be introduced. The FIORD prototype is based on a new method for the calculation of outage duration for each delivery point: • Detailed simulation of the Outage / Restoration process • System modelling representing: protection, switching, monitoring, communication, remote control, etc. • Analysis and reasoning • Decision making and action In addition, each study covers a set of feeders – possibly a region or the whole distribution MV grid – where various scenarios are compared. In each scenario, automatic modifications of feeders' topology and equipment are brought according to designer's rules. This global approach allowed Hydro-Quebec to quantify the improvement of the reliability of its distribution MV grid due to 9 major scenarios. Such a study would have been impossible with the available reliability assessment tools: • 24300 studies would have been necessary with present software. • Restoration time for a delivery point would not have taken into account the particularities of each scenario. Therefore, the new global approach developed for FIORD is a technical Breakthrough. Upgrading existing tools in order to include FIORD's new approach becomes a necessity. Now, the new methodology developed for this prototype has to be incorporated into a commercial high quality software and benefit of all its valuable features.

Abstract

What does it mean to find one's place in a book ? Some authors assert that the web actualises the dream of Emmanuel Kant that reason is an independent entity , where each one of us plays a part in its construction. Is this the core of the enlightment ? In his minor works and his correspondence Kant wrote about the book and about reading. We should distinguish between Kant's own concept and the uses to which it is put today. In his work he speaks of the courage necessary to think, of the publisher's responsibility, of the theoretical and practical components of thought. From the perspective of Kant's writings, we can see that our view of hypertext is too preoccupied with the instrument of communication itself to the detriment of understanding what might be communicated.

Abstract

A high-spin rotational cascade of six gamma rays has been observed in Zn-62. The quadrupole moment of 2.7(-0.5)(+0.7) e b measured for this band corresponds to a deformation beta(2) = 0.45(-0.07)(+0.10). The properties of this band are in excellent agreement with calculations that predict high-spin superdeformed bands in Zn-62 with deformations beta(2) = 0.41-0.49. These results establish a new region of superdeformation for nuclei with neutron and proton numbers N, Z approximate to 30-32.

Abstract

Four new superdeformed (SD) bands have been observed in Gd-147 using the EUROGAM II spectrometer. By comparison with (146,148,149),Gd SD bands, we use the effective alignment to assign excited band configurations, with the support of the Nilsson-Strutinsky cranking formalism. The effect of the crossing of the [642]5/2 and [651]1/2 neutron orbitals lying just below the magic N=86 SD shell gap has been investigated for the Gd-146,Gd-147,Gd-148 bands. Evidence for the [411]1/2 orbital is also given.

Abstract

Precise level lifetimes have been measured for various superdeformed bands in Gd-148,Gd-149 and Dy-152 with the Doppler-shift attenuation method From the derived quadrupole moments, Q(0), we find large differences in deformation between the yrast bands and some excited bands in the gadolinium isotopes. Moreover, two of the excited Gd bands and the Dy-152 yrast band, which have identical moments of inertia, have different elongations, supporting the picture that alignment and deformation effects cancel in identical bands.
