2. How do edge states position themselves in a quantum Hall graphene pn junction?

Abstract

Recent experiments have shown that electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometers of unprecedented fidelities could be built using a graphene pn junction in the quantum Hall regime. In these junctions, two different edge states corresponding to two different valley configurations are spatially separated and form the two arms of the interferometer. The observed separation, of several tens of nanometers, has been found to be abnormally high and thus associated to unrealistic values of the exchange interaction. In this work, we show that, although the separation is due to exchange interaction, its actual value is entirely governed by the sample geometry and independent of the value of the exchange splitting. Our analysis follows the lines of the classical work of Chklovski-Shklovskii- Glazman on electrostatically induced edge state reconstruction and includes quantitative numerical calculations in the experimental geometries., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Graphene is a very promising test-bed for the field of electron quantum optics. However, a fully tunable and coherent electronic beam splitter is still missing. We report the demonstration of electronic beam splitters in graphene that couple quantum Hall edge channels having opposite valley polarizations. The electronic transmission of our beam splitters can be tuned from zero to near unity. By independently setting the beam splitters at the two corners of a graphene PN junction to intermediate transmissions, we realize a fully tunable electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometer. This tunability allows us to unambiguously identify the quantum interferences due to the Mach-Zehnder interferometer, and to study their dependence with the beam-splitter transmission and the interferometer bias voltage. The comparison with conventional semiconductor interferometers points towards universal processes driving the quantum decoherence in those two different 2D systems, with graphene being much more robust to their effect.

Abstract

Previous theoretical works suggested that superhydrophobicity could be enhanced through partial inhibition of the quantum vacuum modes at the surface of a broadband-absorber metamaterial which acts in the extreme ultraviolet frequency domain. This effect would then compete with the classical Cassie-Baxter interpretation of superhydrophobicity. In this article, we first theoretically establish the expected phenomenological features related to such a kind of "quantum" superhydrophobicity. Then, relying on this theoretical framework, we experimentally study patterned silicon surfaces on which organosilane molecules were grafted, all the coated surfaces having similar characteristic pattern sizes but different profiles. Some of these surfaces can indeed freeze quantum photon modes while others cannot. While the latter ones allow hydrophobicity, only the former ones allow for superhydrophobicity. Abstract

The present work introduces an alternative method to deal with digital image restoration into a Bayesian framework, particularly, the use of a new half-quadratic function is proposed which performance is satisfactory compared with respect to some other functions in existing literature. The bayesian methodology is based on the prior knowledge of some information that allows an efficient modelling of the image acquisition process. The edge preservation of objects into the image while smoothing noise is necessary in an adequate model. Thus, we use a convexity criteria given by a semi-Huber function to obtain adequate weighting of the cost functions (half-quadratic) to be minimized. The principal objective when using Bayesian methods based on the Markov Random Fields (MRF) in the context of image processing is to eliminate those effects caused by the excessive smoothness on the reconstruction process of image which are rich in contours or edges. A comparison between the new introduced scheme and other three existing schemes, for the cases of noise filtering and image deblurring, is presented. This collection of implemented methods is inspired of course on the use of MRFs such as the semi-Huber, the generalized Gaussian, the Welch, and Tukey potential functions with granularity control. The obtained results showed a satisfactory performance and the effectiveness of the proposed estimator with respect to other three estimators.

Abstract

We introduce a new approach for image filtering in a Bayesian framework. In this case the probability density function (pdf) of the likelihood function is approximated using the concept of non-parametric or kernel estimation. The method is based on the generalized Gaussian Markov random fields (GGMRF), a class of Markov random fields which are used as prior information into the Bayesian rule, which principal objective is to eliminate those effects caused by the excessive smoothness on the reconstruction process of images which are rich in contours or edges. Accordingly to the hypothesis made for the present work, it is assumed a limited knowledge of the noise pdf, so the idea is to use a non-parametric estimator to estimate such a pdf and then apply the entropy to construct the cost function for the likelihood term. The previous idea leads to the construction of Maximum a posteriori (MAP) robust estimators, since the real systems are always exposed to continuous perturbations of unknown nature. Some promising results of three new MAP entropy estimators (MAPEE) for image filtering are presented, together with some concluding remarks.

Abstract

Valleytronics is rapidly emerging as an exciting area of basic and applied research. In two dimensional systems, valley polarisation can dramatically modify physical properties through electron-electron interactions as demonstrated by such phenomena as the fractional quantum Hall effect and the metal-insulator transition. Here, we address the electrons' spin alignment in a magnetic field in silicon-on-insulator quantum wells under valley polarisation. In stark contrast to expectations from a non-interacting model, we show experimentally that less magnetic field can be required to fully spin polarise a valley-polarised system than a valley-degenerate one. Furthermore, we show that these observations are quantitatively described by parameter free ab initio quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We interpret the results as a manifestation of the greater stability of the spin and valley degenerate system against ferromagnetic instability and Wigner crystalisation which in turn suggests the existence of a new strongly correlated electron liquid at low electron densities., Comment: Main manuscript + supplementary information

Abstract

SEALIVE (1) and Nenu2PHAr (2) European projects are both dedicated to produce biodegradable and biosourced plastics. Microalgae can provide material for the manufacture of plastics currently obtained from petrol or food crop (3). Starch is notably used as a natural biopolymer base to be integrated in plastics blends (4), and can also be degraded into monomeric glucose to feed PHA producing bacteria (5). Several external factors act as signals to redirect the metabolism towards the production, polymerization and storage of glucose (6). Notably, nutrient depletion is known to promote both carbohydrates and lipid pathways. However, in a continuous culture mode, nutrient removal from culture media can be difficult to achieve and other stress inducers might be preferred. Recently, other types of stress have been shown to lead to starch accumulation in green microalgae (7). Supra-optimal temperatures were shown to trigger starch accumulation in Parachlorella kessleri and Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (7) (8). The depletion of blue light from the light spectrum was described as a carbohydrates enhancing factor in C. reinhardtii (9). Chlorella vulgaris CCALA924 was identified as a high starch producer relevant for industrial scale cultivation (10). This strain was described to accumulate starch up to 60% of dry weight when submitted to a physiological stress. Here, its ability to accumulate starch under nutrient deprivation, high temperature or blue light free spectra was tested and content of at least 40% of starch was obtained at laboratory scale. Interestingly, starch structure had almost no amylose when produced under blue light free spectra, whereas nutrient deprivation and high temperature conditions lead to 15% of amylose. 25. CHLORELLA VULGARIS BIOREFINERY: DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW PATHWAY FOR MICROALGAL STARCH-BASED BIOPLASTICS

Abstract

The European H2020 SEALIVE project [1] gathering 24 partners targets the development of new biobasedformulations to replace current plastic produced from fossil feedstock within the framework ofinnovative circular bioeconomy. These new materials have to be biodegradable, compostable and/oreasily sorted to be recycled. Marine and freshwater microalgae feedstock are seen as promising candidates since they do notrequire arable lands (preventing competition with food production), they can quickly produce multiplemetabolites which can be integrated in bioplastic formulations, and they still have the advantage ofcapturing atmospheric CO2 for carbon mitigation purposes. Starch is known for being used as a naturalbiopolymer base to be incorporated in plastics blends [2], whereas Chlorella vulgaris is well known tobe an excellent starch producer [3] and a robust microalga, which can be cultivated at industrial scale. C. vulgaris is nowadays mainly produced for human nutrition, feed and agrochemical applications [4].Focusing the bioplastics market, we propose a new C. vulgaris biorefinery scheme with three targetcomponents: starch, pigments and antioxidant molecules. Starch can be used as the base material forplastic blends; pigments are efficient fluorescent markers, which can improve the plastic recyclability;and finally, the antioxidant molecules can integrate the plastic blends, in order to decrease their degradation under natural light conditions.To optimize volumetric starch productivity and thus decrease the production costs of the algalstarch, we developed an original semi-continuous culture strategy for C. vulgaris. Whereas highbiomass productivity is obtained in a first photobioreactor, starch accumulation is quickly triggeredonce the culture is subjected to nutrients-deprived medium and high light conditions in a secondphotobioreactor, reaching a maximal starch content up to nearly 70 %DW. Abstract

Building two-dimensional lattices in semiconductor quantum-wells offers the prospect to design distinct energy-momentum dispersions, including conical intersections and nondispersive bands. Here, we compare three lithographic patterning methods, e-beam lithography, block copolymer lithography and thermal scanning probe lithography to produce a honeycomb lattice in an In0.53Ga0.47As quantum well. We weigh up the pros and cons of each method to reach lattice constants smaller than 20 nm with a minimum of dispersion in the pore size.

Abstract

This paper considers the stochastic capacitated are routing problem (SCARP), obtained by taking random demands in the CARP. For real-world problems, it is important to create solutions that are insensitive to changes in demand, because these quantities are not deterministic but randomly distributed. This paper provides the basic concept of a new technique to compute such solutions, based upon the best method published for CARP: a hybrid genetic algorithm (HGA). The simulation analysis was achieved with the well-known DeArmon's, Eglese's and Belenguer's instances. This intensive evaluation process was carried out with 1000 replications providing high-quality statistical data. The results obtained prove that there is a great interest to optimize not only the solution cost but also the robustness of solutions. This work is a step forward to treat more realistic problems including industrial goals and constraints linked to demand variations. Abstract

A colony of silico-carbonate Akouemma nodules found in Akou River sedimentary formations of the Palaeoproterozoic Okondja Basin consists of two groups, spheroidal (ovoid) nodules and elongated nodules. These nodules, which consist of two hemispheres separated by a median disc, are composed essentially of micro-quartz associated with calcite of extra-polymeric substance (EPS) type, clay minerals, organic carbon and oxides and sulphides of iron. They contain tubular microfossils, pluricellular clusters, microorganisms and vesicles, and have undergone considerable deformation by mutual lateral compression in tabular beds. They were interpreted as biogenic nodules hosting microorganisms. We provide the following additional supporting evidence: Akouemma nodules exhibit internal fibro-radial fabrics initially composed of fibres and carbon particles; the initially well-organized structures are decaying and are in particles and fragments that are dispersed in the undeformed siliceous mass. These internal fabrics are strongly highlighted by Al- K- (Ti)-rich clay minerals that are often in close association with fibres and carbon particles. They had likely a vegetative reproduction by duplication. We infer that the Akouemma nodules are macrofossils of sessile soft-plastic body organisms. These macrofossils, recently dated at 2.2 Ga, are designated “Akouemma hemisphaeria” and bring a new vision to the “large colonial organisms” found in the Franceville Basin.

Abstract

Experts look for solutions to increase production delivery, but industrial systems are generally disturbed by random events. In many cases, there is a lack of information about random events consequences on the production time and quality of the manufactured products. Surface treatment lines are robotic cells with time window constraints and so random events can have important consequences on production management. Products could be damaged by constraint violations and rejected by the control quality department. Moreover, owing to the structure of these systems, variations in transportation times can induce unrecoverable situations (deadlock occurrences, for example). Therefore, experts look for schedules to prevent random events consequences. One of the most difficult operational problems in surface treatment lines is the proper coordination of the material-handling resources management and job input scheduling. Previous related research works concern the makespan minimization problem and do not take into account the random events consequences: this problem is denoted by the Hoist Scheduling Problem (HSP). This paper focuses on the Stochastic Hoist Scheduling Problem (SHSP), which is the HSP with random events implying variations in transportation times. It appears that no previous work can be reported concerning such stochastic problems but only deterministic ones. A method is proposed here based on stochastic metaheuristics used to determine the production schedules for which the random events consequences are low. An industrial study that highlights the efficiency of the method is proposed. A company that cannot be named for confidential reasons has provided the test data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
