Populations of macropods are higher than estimated pre-European densities in many parts of Australia. To achieve appropriate densities of macropods in the Australian Capital Territory's nature reserves, multi-tenure kangaroo management units are used to tailor management of kangaroos and total grazing pressure to achieve conservation objectives. An adaptive management framework is recommended that monitors the state of the ground-layer vegetation and alters the cull accordingly. This case study may provide insights for kangaroo management in other temperate areas of Australia.

Camera traps are being used increasingly for wildlife management and research. When choosing camera models, practitioners often consider camera trigger speed to be one of the most important factors to maximise species detections. However, factors such as detection zone will also influence detection probability. As part of a rabbit eradication program, we performed a pilot study to compare rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) detections using the Reconyx PC900 (faster trigger speed, narrower detection zone) and the Ltl Acorn Ltl-5310A (slower trigger speed, wider detection zone). Contrary to our predictions, the slower-trigger-speed cameras detected rabbits more than twice as often as the faster-trigger-speed cameras, suggesting that the wider detection zone more than compensated for the relatively slower trigger time. We recommend context-specific field trials to ensure cameras are appropriate for the required purpose. Missed detections could lead to incorrect inferences and potentially misdirected management actions.

There is much critical commentary on the use of palimpsest as a metaphor in postcolonial writing for the violent imposition of colonial culture and indeed, this emphasis is warranted. Less noted, however, is the element of seduction involved in the concept of hegemonic control in colonial or imperial situations and in postcolonial fiction. The purpose of this article is to illustrate the use of these concepts in the popular and critically acclaimed postcolonial novels, Amitav Ghosh’s The Glass Palace (2000) and Zadie Smith’s White Teeth (2000). While palimpsest — as metaphor and technique — is evident in both, this essay argues that the idea of seduction plays an important part in the understanding and representation of complex colonial relationships in both novels.

The article discusses two novels about the Queensland Fitzgerald Inquiry, Margaret Simon's "The Truth Teller" and Andrew McGahan's "Last Drinks" and analyses the manner in which they illuminate that phenomenon. The two novels discussed here take a somewhat different slant, and purport to explore the whole and apparently previously unrevealed truth of the Fitzgerald era through the particularising explication of individual circumstances, decisions and experiences of fictionalised participants. Thus, both novels present individual quests for self-knowledge via an understanding of the events through which these characters have lived. They depict individual situations and motivations that both support and challenge systemic corruption. In the process, they explore not only the institutional and structural factors enabling that corruption, but also philosophical and emotional factors, as they depict the moral choices and dilemmas surrounding and arising from the pursuit of political values. They ascribe corruption primarily to uncritical approaches to power. This is a key issue in both texts as characters become involved in corruption and illegal activity through ignorance and complacency, accepting prevailing cliques and cultural codes of conduct for intrinsically selfish reasons.
