1. Non-STEM Majors COVID-19 Vaccine Impressions Improve, and Misconceptions Resolve, after Podcast Assignment

Abstract: Misinformation regarding vaccine science decreased the receptiveness to COVID-19 vaccines, exacerbating the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on society. To mitigate the negative societal impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, impactful and creative science communication was needed, yet little research has explored how to encourage COVID-19 vaccine acceptance and address misconceptions held by non-Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics majors (referred to as non-majors). We have previously demonstrated that including expert guest lectures in the vaccine module in the non-major introductory biology course helps combat students' vaccine hesitancy. In the present study, we further address how learning about vaccines impacts student knowledge and impressions of the COVID-19 vaccines through a podcast assignment. As a part of this assignment, non-majors created podcasts to address COVID-19 vaccine misconceptions of their choice. We coded pre and post, open-ended essay reflections (n = 40) to assess non-majors' knowledge and impressions of the COVID-19 vaccines. Non-majors' impressions of the vaccines improved following the podcast assignment with more than three times as many students reporting a positive view of the assignment than negative views. Notably, eight of the nine interviewed students still ended the course with misconceptions about the COVID-19 vaccines, such as the vaccines being unnecessary or causing fertility issues. In a post semi-structured interview following this assignment, students (n = 7) discussed the impact of looking into the specific misconceptions related to COVID-19 vaccines themselves, including improved science communication skills and understanding of different perspectives. Thus, podcasts can provide opportunities for students to improve engagement in valuable societal topics like vaccine literacy in the non-majors classroom.

2. FAWAC: Feasibility Informed Advantage Weighted Regression for Persistent Safety in Offline Reinforcement Learning

Abstract: Safe offline reinforcement learning aims to learn policies that maximize cumulative rewards while adhering to safety constraints, using only offline data for training. A key challenge is balancing safety and performance, particularly when the policy encounters out-of-distribution (OOD) states and actions, which can lead to safety violations or overly conservative behavior during deployment. To address these challenges, we introduce Feasibility Informed Advantage Weighted Actor-Critic (FAWAC), a method that prioritizes persistent safety in constrained Markov decision processes (CMDPs). FAWAC formulates policy optimization with feasibility conditions derived specifically for offline datasets, enabling safe policy updates in non-parametric policy space, followed by projection into parametric space for constrained actor training. By incorporating a cost-advantage term into Advantage Weighted Regression (AWR), FAWAC ensures that the safety constraints are respected while maximizing performance. Additionally, we propose a strategy to address a more challenging class of problems that involves tempting datasets where trajectories are predominantly high-rewarded but unsafe. Empirical evaluations on standard benchmarks demonstrate that FAWAC achieves strong results, effectively balancing safety and performance in learning policies from the static datasets.

3. Latent Safety-Constrained Policy Approach for Safe Offline Reinforcement Learning

Abstract: In safe offline reinforcement learning (RL), the objective is to develop a policy that maximizes cumulative rewards while strictly adhering to safety constraints, utilizing only offline data. Traditional methods often face difficulties in balancing these constraints, leading to either diminished performance or increased safety risks. We address these issues with a novel approach that begins by learning a conservatively safe policy through the use of Conditional Variational Autoencoders, which model the latent safety constraints. Subsequently, we frame this as a Constrained Reward-Return Maximization problem, wherein the policy aims to optimize rewards while complying with the inferred latent safety constraints. This is achieved by training an encoder with a reward-Advantage Weighted Regression objective within the latent constraint space. Our methodology is supported by theoretical analysis, including bounds on policy performance and sample complexity. Extensive empirical evaluation on benchmark datasets, including challenging autonomous driving scenarios, demonstrates that our approach not only maintains safety compliance but also excels in cumulative reward optimization, surpassing existing methods. Additional visualizations provide further insights into the effectiveness and underlying mechanisms of our approach.

4. Safeguarding Text-to-Image Generation via Inference-Time Prompt-Noise Optimization

Abstract: Text-to-Image (T2I) diffusion models are widely recognized for their ability to generate high-quality and diverse images based on text prompts. However, despite recent advances, these models are still prone to generating unsafe images containing sensitive or inappropriate content, which can be harmful to users. Current efforts to prevent inappropriate image generation for diffusion models are easy to bypass and vulnerable to adversarial attacks. How to ensure that T2I models align with specific safety goals remains a significant challenge. In this work, we propose a novel, training-free approach, called Prompt-Noise Optimization (PNO), to mitigate unsafe image generation. Our method introduces a novel optimization framework that leverages both the continuous prompt embedding and the injected noise trajectory in the sampling process to generate safe images. Extensive numerical results demonstrate that our framework achieves state-of-the-art performance in suppressing toxic image generations and demonstrates robustness to adversarial attacks, without needing to tune the model parameters. Furthermore, compared with existing methods, PNO uses comparable generation time while offering the best tradeoff between the conflicting goals of safe generation and prompt-image alignment.

5. Truly Supercritical Trade-offs for Resolution, Cutting Planes, Monotone Circuits, and Weisfeiler-Leman

Abstract: We exhibit supercritical trade-off for monotone circuits, showing that there are functions computable by small circuits for which any circuit must have depth super-linear or even super-polynomial in the number of variables, far exceeding the linear worst-case upper bound. We obtain similar trade-offs in proof complexity, where we establish the first size-depth trade-offs for cutting planes and resolution that are truly supercritical, i.e., in terms of formula size rather than number of variables, and we also show supercritical trade-offs between width and size for treelike resolution. Our results build on a new supercritical width-depth trade-off for resolution, obtained by refining and strengthening the compression scheme for the Cop-Robber game in [Grohe, Lichter, Neuen & Schweitzer 2023]. This yields robust supercritical trade-offs for dimension versus iteration number in the Weisfeiler-Leman algorithm, which also translate into trade-offs between number of variables and quantifier depth in first-order logic. Abstract: Neutrino-nucleus cross section measurements are needed to improve interaction modeling to meet the precision needs of neutrino experiments in efforts to measure oscillation parameters and search for physics beyond the Standard Model. We review the difficulties associated with modeling neutrino-nucleus interactions that lead to a dependence on event generators in oscillation analyses and cross section measurements alike. We then describe data-driven model validation techniques intended to address this model dependence. The method relies on utilizing various goodness-of-fit tests and the correlations between different observables and channels to probe the model for defects in the phase space relevant for the desired analysis. These techniques shed light on relevant mis-modeling, allowing it to be detected before it begins to bias the cross section results. We compare more commonly used model validation methods which directly validate the model against alternative ones to these data-driven techniques and show their efficacy with fake data studies. These studies demonstrate that employing data-driven model validation in cross section measurements represents a reliable strategy to produce robust results that will stimulate the desired improvements to interaction modeling.

7. Sensitivity Lower Bounds for Approximaiton Algorithms

Abstract: Sensitivity measures how much the output of an algorithm changes, in terms of Hamming distance, when part of the input is modified. While approximation algorithms with low sensitivity have been developed for many problems, no sensitivity lower bounds were previously known for approximation algorithms. In this work, we establish the first polynomial lower bound on the sensitivity of (randomized) approximation algorithms for constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs) by adapting the probabilistically checkable proof (PCP) framework to preserve sensitivity lower bounds. From this, we derive polynomial sensitivity lower bounds for approximation algorithms for a variety of problems, including maximum clique, minimum vertex cover, and maximum cut. Given the connection between sensitivity and distributed algorithms, our sensitivity lower bounds also allow us to recover various round complexity lower bounds for distributed algorithms in the LOCAL model. Additionally, we present new lower bounds for distributed CSPs.

Abstract: The discovery and identification of molecules in biological and environmental samples is crucial for advancing biomedical and chemical sciences. Tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) is the leading technique for high-throughput elucidation of molecular structures. However, decoding a molecular structure from its mass spectrum is exceptionally challenging, even when performed by human experts. As a result, the vast majority of acquired MS/MS spectra remain uninterpreted, thereby limiting our understanding of the underlying (bio)chemical processes. Despite decades of progress in machine learning applications for predicting molecular structures from MS/MS spectra, the development of new methods is severely hindered by the lack of standard datasets and evaluation protocols. To address this problem, we propose MassSpecGym -- the first comprehensive benchmark for the discovery and identification of molecules from MS/MS data. Our benchmark comprises the largest publicly available collection of high-quality labeled MS/MS spectra and defines three MS/MS annotation challenges: \textit{de novo} molecular structure generation, molecule retrieval, and spectrum simulation. It includes new evaluation metrics and a generalization-demanding data split, therefore standardizing the MS/MS annotation tasks and rendering the problem accessible to the broad machine learning community. Abstract: Large neutrino liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) experiments can broaden their physics reach by reconstructing and interpreting MeV-scale energy depositions, or blips, present in their data. We demonstrate new calorimetric and particle discrimination capabilities at the MeV energy scale using reconstructed blips in data from the MicroBooNE LArTPC at Fermilab. We observe a concentration of low energy ($<$3 MeV) blips around fiberglass mechanical support struts along the TPC edges with energy spectrum features consistent with the Compton edge of 2.614 MeV $^{208}$Tl decay $\gamma$ rays. These features are used to verify proper calibration of electron energy scales in MicroBooNE's data to few percent precision and to measure the specific activity of $^{208}$Tl in the fiberglass composing these struts, $(11.7 \pm 0.2 ~\text{(stat)} \pm 2.8~\text{(syst)})~\text{Bq/kg}$. Cosmogenically-produced blips above 3 MeV in reconstructed energy are used to showcase the ability of large LArTPCs to distinguish between low-energy proton and electron energy depositions. An enriched sample of low-energy protons selected using this new particle discrimination technique is found to be smaller in data than in dedicated CORSIKA cosmic ray simulations, suggesting either incorrect CORSIKA modeling of incident cosmic fluxes or particle transport modeling issues in Geant4., Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures total including the supplementary material section, 1 table. 10. Confidence is detection-like in high-dimensional spaces

Abstract: Confidence estimates are often "detection-like" - driven by positive evidence in favour of a decision. This empirical observation has been interpreted as showing human metacognition is limited by biases or heuristics. Here we show that Bayesian confidence estimates also exhibit heightened sensitivity to decision-congruent evidence in higher-dimensional signal detection theoretic spaces, leading to detection-like confidence criteria. This effect is due to a nonlinearity induced by normalisation of confidence by a large number of unchosen alternatives. Our analysis suggests that detection-like confidence is rational when computing confidence in a higher-dimensional evidence space than that assumed by the experimenter.

Abstract: We present the results of a search for gravitational-wave transients associated with core-collapse supernova SN 2023ixf, which was observed in the galaxy Messier 101 via optical emission on 2023 May 19th, during the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA 15th Engineering Run. We define a five-day on-source window during which an accompanying gravitational-wave signal may have occurred. No gravitational waves have been identified in data when at least two gravitational-wave observatories were operating, which covered $\sim 14\%$ of this five-day window. We report the search detection efficiency for various possible gravitational-wave emission models. Considering the distance to M101 (6.7 Mpc), we derive constraints on the gravitational-wave emission mechanism of core-collapse supernovae across a broad frequency spectrum, ranging from 50 Hz to 2 kHz where we assume the GW emission occurred when coincident data are available in the on-source window. Considering an ellipsoid model for a rotating proto-neutron star, our search is sensitive to gravitational-wave energy $1 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2$ and luminosity $4 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2/\text{s}$ for a source emitting at 50 Hz. These constraints are around an order of magnitude more stringent than those obtained so far with gravitational-wave data. The constraint on the ellipticity of the proto-neutron star that is formed is as low as $1.04$, at frequencies above $1200$ Hz, surpassing results from SN 2019ejj., Comment: Main paper: 6 pages, 4 figures and 1 table. 12. An Efficient Local Optimizer-Tracking Solver for Differential-Algebriac Equations with Optimization Criteria

Abstract: A sequential solver for differential-algebraic equations with embedded optimization criteria (DAEOs) was developed to take advantage of the theoretical work done by Deussen et al. Solvers of this type separate the optimization problem from the differential equation and solve each individually. The new solver relies on the reduction of a DAEO to a sequence of differential inclusions separated by jump events. These jump events occur when the global solution to the optimization problem jumps to a new value. Without explicit treatment, these events will reduce the order of convergence of the integration step to one. The solver implements a "local optimizer tracking" procedure to detect and correct these jump events. Local optimizer tracking is much less expensive than running a deterministic global optimizer at every time step. This preserves the order of convergence of the integrator component without sacrificing performance to perform deterministic global optimization at every time step. The newly developed solver produces correct solutions to DAEOs and runs much faster than sequential DAEO solvers that rely only on global optimization., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: The world is abundant with diverse materials, each possessing unique surface appearances that play a crucial role in our daily perception and understanding of their properties. Despite advancements in technology enabling the capture and realistic reproduction of material appearances for visualization and quality control, the interoperability of material property information across various measurement representations and software platforms remains a complex challenge. A key to overcoming this challenge lies in the automatic identification of materials' perceptual features, enabling intuitive differentiation of properties stored in disparate material data representations. We reasoned that for many practical purposes, a compact representation of the perceptual appearance is more useful than an exhaustive physical description.This paper introduces a novel approach to material identification by encoding perceptual features obtained from dynamic visual stimuli. We conducted a psychophysical experiment to select and validate 16 particularly significant perceptual attributes obtained from videos of 347 materials. We then gathered attribute ratings from over twenty participants for each material, creating a 'material fingerprint' that encodes the unique perceptual properties of each material. Finally, we trained a multi-layer perceptron model to predict the relationship between statistical and deep learning image features and their corresponding perceptual properties. We demonstrate the model's performance in material retrieval and filtering according to individual attributes. This model represents a significant step towards simplifying the sharing and understanding of material properties in diverse digital environments regardless of their digital representation, enhancing both the accuracy and efficiency of material identification., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables

Abstract: The magnetar SGR 1935+2154 is the only known Galactic source of fast radio bursts (FRBs). FRBs from SGR 1935+2154 were first detected by CHIME/FRB and STARE2 in 2020 April, after the conclusion of the LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA Collaborations' O3 observing run. Here we analyze four periods of gravitational wave (GW) data from the GEO600 detector coincident with four periods of FRB activity detected by CHIME/FRB, as well as X-ray glitches and X-ray bursts detected by NICER and NuSTAR close to the time of one of the FRBs. We do not detect any significant GW emission from any of the events. Instead, using a short-duration GW search (for bursts $\leq$ 1 s) we derive 50\% (90\%) upper limits of $10^{48}$ ($10^{49}$) erg for GWs at 300 Hz and $10^{49}$ ($10^{50}$) erg at 2 kHz, and constrain the GW-to-radio energy ratio to $\leq 10^{14} - 10^{16}$. We also derive upper limits from a long-duration search for bursts with durations between 1 and 10 s. 15. Skin Controlled Electronic and Neuromorphic Tattoos

Abstract: Wearable human activity sensors developed in the past decade show a distinct trend of becoming thinner and more imperceptible while retaining their electrical qualities, with graphene e-tattoos, as the ultimate example. A persistent challenge in modern wearables, however, is signal degradation due to the distance between the sensor's recording site and the signal transmission medium. To address this, we propose here to directly utilize human skin as a signal transmission medium as well as using low-cost gel electrodes for rapid probing of 2D transistor-based wearables. We demonstrate that the hypodermis layer of the skin can effectively serve as an electrolyte, enabling electrical potential application to semiconducting films made from graphene and other 2D materials placed on top of the skin. Graphene transistor tattoos, when biased through the body, exhibit high charge carrier mobility (up to 6500 2V-1s-1), with MoS2 and PtSe2 transistors showing mobilities up to 30 cm2V-1s-1 and 1 cm2V-1s-1, respectively. Finally, by introducing a layer of Nafion to the device structure, we observed neuromorphic functionality, transforming these e-tattoos into neuromorphic bioelectronic devices controlled through the skin itself. The neuromorphic bioelectronic tattoos have the potential for developing self-aware and stand-alone smart wearables, crucial for understanding and improving overall human performance.

SISTINE operates over a bandpass of 98 -- 127 and 130 -- 158 nm, capturing a broad suite of emission lines tracing the full 10$^4$ -- 10$^5$ K formation temperature range critical for reconstructing the full UV radiation field incident on planets orbiting solar-type stars. SISTINE serves as a platform for key technology developments for future ultraviolet observatories. SISTINE operates at moderate resolving power ($R\sim$1500) while providing spectral imaging over an angular extent of $\sim$6', with $\sim$2" resolution at the slit center. The instrument is composed of an f/14 Cassegrain telescope that feeds a 2.1x magnifying spectrograph, utilizing a blazed holographically ruled diffraction grating and a powered fold mirror. Spectra are captured on a large format microchannel plate (MCP) detector consisting of two 113 x 42 mm segments each read out by a cross delay-line anode. Several novel technologies are employed in SISTINE to advance their technical maturity in support of future NASA UV/optical astronomy missions. These include enhanced aluminum lithium fluoride coatings (eLiF), atomic layer deposition (ALD) protective optical coatings, and ALD processed large format MCPs. SISTINE was launched a total of three times with two of the three launches successfully observing targets Procyon A and $\alpha$ Centauri A and B.

19. An Inclusive Workplace Framework: Principles and Practices for Work-Integrated Learning Host Organizations

Abstract: Work-integrated learning (WIL), as an educational approach, is facilitated through relationships between Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and external 'host' organizations. Responsible host organizations should recognize that students undertaking WIL come from a range of different cultures, socio-economic backgrounds, and have varying academic, physical, and other capabilities. An inclusive workplace will seek to facilitate a positive and rewarding experience for all WIL students. Recent WIL literature has seen a strong focus on inclusive access to WIL. This article examines key elements that can contribute to host organizations providing an inclusive environment for students. Socio-cultural theories related to learning in the workplace are used as a theoretical lens. An Inclusive WIL Workplace Framework is proposed, highlighting principles, practices, and supervisor and co-worker characteristics, that can be utilized by workplaces to assess their inclusivity and address any gaps, and by students to understand the expectations of HEIs on host organizations.

The confusion is further compounded by the use of the term "modified curriculum" when describing the academic content taught to some students with disabilities. The misunderstandings of these terms affect how Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) are written and then implemented. The purpose of this Brief is to clarify what accommodations and modifications are for both instruction and assessment for students with disabilities. We also disentangle the use of the term "alternate or modified curriculum" from the meaning of modification used for instruction and assessment. Accommodations and modifications can also be appropriate for English learners; however, this Brief is focused on students with disabilities, including English learners with disabilities.

21. Using RECAST Theory to Examine Racial Stress Appraisal across High Schools: Differences in Racial Threat and Support

Abstract: Data from 318 diverse high school students from three different types of high schools in the United States were collected. School types varied by location (e.g., suburban, urban), size, and student demographics (e.g., race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status). Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) was conducted to examine the factor structure of the STRESS-Y. Mean comparisons were performed to assess variations in Racial Stress Appraisal across different school types. The EFA of the STRESS-Y confirmed its factor structure, supporting its validity as a measure of RSA in youth and we were able to extract two robust factors--Racial Threat Appraisal and Racial Support Appraisal. Mean comparisons revealed that Racial Threat Appraisal and Racial Support Appraisal varied across different school types, highlighting the influence of school context on students' experiences of racial stress. This study provides evidence for the validity of the STRESS-Y as a measure of Racial Stress Appraisal in youth. The findings demonstrate the importance of considering school type as a factor influencing students' experiences of racial stress as well as how support, racial coping, and stress management skills may help mitigate ongoing interpersonal harm that youth are experiencing. The validated measure and the understanding of the factors contributing to Racial Stress Appraisal can inform interventions aimed at supporting students in managing and coping with racial stressors in their respective school environments.

We move toward a Pedagogy of Social Imagination in Art and Adult Education by recounting a real-life empirical study of creating opportunities for transformative learning through engagements with art. 24. The Effectiveness of NP001 on the Long-Term Survival of Patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

Abstract: BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to estimate the effect of a 6 months treatment course of the innate immune modulator NP001 (a pH-adjusted intravenous formulation of purified sodium chlorite), on disease progression, as measured by overall survival (OS) in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. METHODS: Blinded survival data were retrospectively collected for 268 of the 273 patients who had participated in two phase 2 placebo-controlled clinical trials of NP001 (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT01281631 and NCT02794857) and received at least one dose of either 1 mg/kg or 2 mg/kg of NP001 as chlorite based on actual body weight, or placebo. Kaplan-Meier methods were used on the intent-to-treat population to estimate survival probabilities. RESULTS: In the overall population, the median OS was 4.8 months (2.7 years [95% CI: 2.3, 3.5] in the 2 mg/kg NP001group and 2.3 years [95% CI: 1.8, 2.9] in the placebo group). Hazard ratio (HR): 0.77 (95% CI: 0.57, 1.03), p = 0.073. Among patients aged ≤ 65 years, the median OS for the 2 mg/kg NP001 group was 10.8 months (3.3 years [95% CI: 2.4, 3.8] in the 2 mg/kg NP001 group and 2.4 years [95% CI: 1.7, 3.3] in the placebo group). HR: 0.69 (95% CI: 0.50, 0.95). No differences were observed in the 1 mg/kg NP001 group or in patients aged > 65 years. CONCLUSIONS: The findings from this study suggest that a 6 months treatment course of NP001 resulted in a 4.8-month increase in overall survival in patients with ALS. The findings from this study indicate that targeting inflammation associated with the innate immune system may provide a pathway for new therapeutic options for the treatment of ALS.

Abstract: Zeaxanthin (Zea) is a key component in the energy-dependent, rapidly reversible, nonphotochemical quenching process (qE) that regulates photosynthetic light harvesting. Previous transient absorption (TA) studies suggested that Zea can participate in direct quenching via chlorophyll (Chl) to Zea energy transfer. However, the contamination of intrinsic exciton-exciton annihilation (EEA) makes the assignment of TA signal ambiguous. In this study, we present EEA-free TA data using Nicotiana benthamiana thylakoid membranes, including the wild type and three NPQ mutants (npq1, npq4, and lut2) generated by CRISPR/Cas9 mutagenesis. The results show a strong correlation between excitation energy transfer from excited Chl Qy to Zea S1 and the xanthophyll cycle during qE activation. Notably, a Lut S1 signal is absent in the npq1 thylakoids which lack zeaxanthin. Additionally, the fifth-order response analysis shows a reduction in the exciton diffusion length (LD) from 62 ± 6 nm to 43 ± 3 nm under high light illumination, consistent with the reduced range of exciton motion being a key aspect of plants response to excess light.

Abstract: Photosystem II (PSII) has the unique ability to perform water-splitting. With light-harvesting complexes, it forms the PSII supercomplex (PSII-SC) which is a functional unit that can perform efficient energy conversion, as well as photoprotection, allowing photosynthetic organisms to adapt to the naturally fluctuating sunlight intensity. Achieving these functions requires a collaborative energy transfer network between all subunits of the PSII-SC. In this work, we perform kinetic analyses and characterise the energy landscape of the PSII-SC with a structure-based energy transfer model. With first passage time analyses and kinetic Monte Carlo simulations, we are able to map out the overall energy transfer network. We also investigate how energy transfer pathways are affected when individual protein complexes are removed from the network, revealing the functional roles of the subunits of the PSII-SC. In addition, we provide a quantitative description of the flat energy landscape of the PSII-SC. We show that it is a unique landscape that produces multiple kinetically relevant pathways, corresponding to a high pathway entropy. These design principles are crucial for balancing efficient energy conversion and photoprotection.

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To investigate Covid-19 vaccination as a potential secondary public health benefit of case management for Medicaid beneficiaries with health and social needs. DATA SOURCES AND STUDY SETTING: The CommunityConnect case management program for Medicaid beneficiaries is run by Contra Costa Health, a county safety net health system in California. Program enrollment data were merged with comprehensive county vaccination records. STUDY DESIGN: Individuals with elevated risk of hospital and emergency department use were randomized each month to a case management intervention or usual care. Interdisciplinary case managers offered coaching, community referrals, healthcare connections, and other support based on enrollee interest and need. Using survival analysis with intent-to-treat assignment, we assessed rates of first-dose Covid-19 vaccination from December 2020 to September 2021. In exploratory sub-analyses we also examined effect heterogeneity by gender, race/ethnicity, age, and primary language. DATA COLLECTION AND EXTRACTION METHODS: Data were extracted from county and program records as of September 2021, totaling 12,866 interventions and 25,761 control enrollments. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Approximately 58% of enrollees were female and 41% were under age 35. Enrollees were 23% White, 12% Asian/Pacific Islander, 20% Black/African American, and 36% Hispanic/Latino, and 10% other/unknown. Approximately 35% of the intervention group engaged with their case manager. Approximately 56% of all intervention and control enrollees were vaccinated after 9 months of analysis time. Intervention enrollees had a higher vaccination rate compared to control enrollees (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR]: 1.06; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.02-1.10). In sub-analyses, the intervention was associated with stronger likelihood of vaccination among males and individuals under age 35. CONCLUSIONS: Case management infrastructure modestly improved Covid-19 vaccine uptake in a population of Medicaid beneficiaries that over-represents social groups with barriers to early Covid-19 vaccination. Amidst mixed evidence on vaccination-specific incentives, leveraging trusted case managers and existing case management programs may be a valuable prevention strategy.

28. Supervised Multi-Modal Fission Learning

Abstract: Learning from multimodal datasets can leverage complementary information and improve performance in prediction tasks. A commonly used strategy to account for feature correlations in high-dimensional datasets is the latent variable approach. Several latent variable methods have been proposed for multimodal datasets. However, these methods either focus on extracting the shared component across all modalities or on extracting both a shared component and individual components specific to each modality. To address this gap, we propose a Multi-Modal Fission Learning (MMFL) model that simultaneously identifies globally joint, partially joint, and individual components underlying the features of multimodal datasets. Unlike existing latent variable methods, MMFL uses supervision from the response variable to identify predictive latent components and has a natural extension for incorporating incomplete multimodal data. Through simulation studies, we demonstrate that MMFL outperforms various existing multimodal algorithms in both complete and incomplete modality settings. We applied MMFL to a real-world case study for early prediction of Alzheimers Disease using multimodal neuroimaging and genomics data from the Alzheimers Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) dataset. MMFL provided more accurate predictions and better insights into within- and across-modality correlations compared to existing methods.

29. Thematic Analysis with Open-Source Generative AI and Machine Learning: A New Method for Inductive Qualitative Codebook Development

Abstract: This paper aims to answer one central question: to what extent can open-source generative text models be used in a workflow to approximate thematic analysis in social science research? To answer this question, we present the Generative AI-enabled Theme Organization and Structuring (GATOS) workflow, which uses open-source machine learning techniques, natural language processing tools, and generative text models to facilitate thematic analysis. To establish validity of the method, we present three case studies applying the GATOS workflow, leveraging these models and techniques to inductively create codebooks similar to traditional procedures using thematic analysis. Specifically, we investigate the extent to which a workflow comprising open-source models and tools can inductively produce codebooks that approach the known space of themes and sub-themes. To address the challenge of gleaning insights from these texts, we combine open-source generative text models, retrieval-augmented generation, and prompt engineering to identify codes and themes in large volumes of text, i.e., generate a qualitative codebook. The process mimics an inductive coding process that researchers might use in traditional thematic analysis by reading text one unit of analysis at a time, considering existing codes already in the codebook, and then deciding whether or not to generate a new code based on whether the extant codebook provides adequate thematic coverage. We demonstrate this workflow using three synthetic datasets from hypothetical organizational research settings: a study of teammate feedback in teamwork settings, a study of organizational cultures of ethical behavior, and a study of employee perspectives about returning to their offices after the pandemic. We show that the GATOS workflow is able to identify themes in the text that were used to generate the original synthetic datasets.

30. On the Vulnerability of Applying Retrieval-Augmented Generation within Knowledge-Intensive Application Domains

Abstract: Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) has been empirically shown to enhance the performance of large language models (LLMs) in knowledge-intensive domains such as healthcare, finance, and legal contexts. Given a query, RAG retrieves relevant documents from a corpus and integrates them into the LLMs' generation process. In this study, we investigate the adversarial robustness of RAG, focusing specifically on examining the retrieval system. First, across 225 different setup combinations of corpus, retriever, query, and targeted information, we show that retrieval systems are vulnerable to universal poisoning attacks in medical Q\&A. In such attacks, adversaries generate poisoned documents containing a broad spectrum of targeted information, such as personally identifiable information. When these poisoned documents are inserted into a corpus, they can be accurately retrieved by any users, as long as attacker-specified queries are used. To understand this vulnerability, we discovered that the deviation from the query's embedding to that of the poisoned document tends to follow a pattern in which the high similarity between the poisoned document and the query is retained, thereby enabling precise retrieval. Based on these findings, we develop a new detection-based defense to ensure the safe use of RAG. Through extensive experiments spanning various Q\&A domains, we observed that our proposed method consistently achieves excellent detection rates in nearly all cases.

31. Wandercode: An Interaction Design for Code Recommenders to Reduce Information Overload, Ease Exploration, and Save Screen Space

Abstract: In this paper, we present Wandercode, a novel interaction design for recommender systems that recommend code locations to aid programmers in software development tasks. In particular, our design aims to improve upon prior designs by reducing information overload, by better supporting the exploration of recommendations, and by making more efficient use of screen space. During our design process, we developed a set of design dimensions to aid others in the design of code recommenders. To validate our design, we implemented a prototype of our design as an Atom code editor extension with support for the Java programming language, and conducted an empirical user evaluation comparing our graph-based Wandercode design to a control design representative of prior list-based interaction designs for code recommenders. The results showed that, compared with the control design, Wandercode helped participants complete tasks more quickly, reduced their cognitive load, and was viewed more favorably by participants.

Abstract: We study a magnitude-limited sample of 36 Broad-lined Type Ic Supernovae (SNe Ic-BL) from the Zwicky Transient Facility Bright Transient Survey (detected between March 2018 and August 2021), which is the largest systematic study of SNe Ic-BL done in literature thus far. We present the light curves (LCs) for each of the SNe, and analyze the shape of the LCs to derive empirical parameters, along with the explosion epochs for every event. The sample has an average absolute peak magnitude in the r band of $M_r^{max}$ = -18.51 $\pm$ 0.15 mag. Using spectra obtained around peak light, we compute expansion velocities from the Fe II 5169 Angstrom line for each event with high enough signal-to-noise ratio spectra, and find an average value of $v_{ph}$ = 16,100 $\pm$ 1,100 km $s^{-1}$. We also compute bolometric LCs, study the blackbody temperature and radii evolution over time, and derive the explosion properties of the SNe. The explosion properties of the sample have average values of $M_{Ni}$ = $0.37_{-0.06}^{+0.08}$ solar masses, $M_{ej}$ = $2.45_{-0.41}^{+0.47}$ solar masses, and $E_K$= $4.02_{-1.00}^{+1.37} \times 10^{51}$ erg. Thirteen events have radio observations from the Very Large Array, with 8 detections and 5 non-detections. We find that the populations that have radio detections and radio non-detections are indistinct from one another with respect to their optically-inferred explosion properties, and there are no statistically significant correlations present between the events' radio luminosities and optically-inferred explosion properties. Working with experts representing a significant number of groups working in the ultraviolet, we summarize some of the leading science drivers, present an argument for a 100 nm blue wavelength cutoff, and gather current state of the art of UV technologies. We present the state of the art of contamination control, a crucial piece of the UV instrument plan. Abstract: Autonomous racing serves as a critical platform for evaluating automated driving systems and enhancing vehicle mobility intelligence. This work investigates offline reinforcement learning methods to train agents within the dynamic F1tenth racing environment. The study begins by exploring the challenges of online training in the Austria race track environment, where agents consistently fail to complete the laps. Consequently, this research pivots towards an offline strategy, leveraging `expert' demonstration dataset to facilitate agent training. A waypoint-based suboptimal controller is developed to gather data with successful lap episodes. This data is then employed to train offline learning-based algorithms, with a subsequent analysis of the agents' cross-track performance, evaluating their zero-shot transferability from seen to unseen scenarios and their capacity to adapt to changes in environment dynamics. Beyond mere algorithm benchmarking in autonomous racing scenarios, this study also introduces and describes the machinery of our return-conditioned decision tree-based policy, comparing its performance with methods that employ fully connected neural networks, Transformers, and Diffusion Policies and highlighting some insights into method selection for training autonomous agents in driving interactions.

Abstract: NASA's Great Observatories Maturation Program (GOMAP) will advance the science definition, technology, and workforce needed for the Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO) with the goal of a Phase A start by the end of the current decade. GOMAP offers long-term cost and schedule savings compared to the 'TRL 6 by Preliminary Design Review' paradigm historically adopted by large NASA missions. Many of the key technologies in the development queue for HWO require the combined activities of 1) facility and process development for validation of technologies at the scale required for HWO and 2) deployment in the 'real world' environment of mission Integration & Test prior to on-orbit operations. We present a concept for the Smallsat Technology Accelerated Maturation Platform (STAMP), an integrated facility, laboratory, and instrument prototype development program that could be supported through the GOMAP framework and applied to any of NASA's Future Great Observatories (FGOs). This brief describes the recommendation for the first entrant into this program, "STAMP-1", an ESPA Grande-class mission advancing key technologies to enable the ultraviolet capabilities of HWO. STAMP-1 would advance new broadband optical coatings, high-sensitivity ultraviolet detector systems, and multi-object target selection technology to TRL 6 with a flight demonstration. Abstract: Quantum sensors using solid-state spin defects excel in the detection of radiofrequency (RF) fields, serving various purposes in communication, ranging, and sensing. For this purpose, pulsed dynamical decoupling (PDD) protocols are typically applied, which enhance sensitivity to RF signals. However, these methods are limited to frequencies of a few megahertz, which poses a challenge for sensing higher frequencies. We introduce an alternative approach based on a continuous dynamical decoupling (CDD) scheme involving dressed states of nitrogen vacancy (NV) ensemble spins driven within a microwave resonator. We compare the CDD methods to established PDD protocols and demonstrate the detection of RF signals up to $\sim$ 85 MHz, about ten times the current limit imposed by the PDD approach under identical conditions. Implementing the CDD method in a heterodyne synchronized protocol combines the high frequency detection with high spectral resolution. This advancement extends to various domains requiring detection in the high frequency (HF) and very high frequency (VHF) ranges of the RF spectrum, including spin sensor-based magnetic resonance spectroscopy at high magnetic fields.

Abstract: We present new near-ultraviolet (NUV, $\lambda$ = 2479 $-$ 3306 $\r{A}$) transmission spectroscopy of KELT-9b, the hottest known exoplanet, obtained with the Colorado Ultraviolet Transit Experiment ($CUTE$) CubeSat. Two transits were observed on September 28th and September 29th 2022, referred to as Visits 1 and 2 respectively. Using a combined transit and systematics model for each visit, the best-fit broadband NUV light curves are R$_{\text{p}}$/R$_{\star}$ $=$ 0.136$_{0.0146}^{0.0125}$ for Visit 1 and R$_{\text{p}}$/R$_{\star}$ $=$ 0.111$_{0.0190}^{0.0162}$ for Visit 2, appearing an average of 1.54$\times$ larger in the NUV than at optical wavelengths. While the systematics between the two visits vary considerably, the two broadband NUV light curves are consistent with each other. A transmission spectrum with 25 $\r{A}$ bins suggests a general trend of excess absorption in the NUV, consistent with expectations for ultra-hot Jupiters. Although we see an extended atmosphere in the NUV, the reduced data lack the sensitivity to probe individual spectral lines.

Abstract: Context. The modeling of stellar spectra of flux standards observed by the Hubble and James Webb space telescopes requires a large synthetic spectral library that covers a wide atmospheric parameter range. Aims. The aim of this paper is to present and describe the calculation methods behind the updated version of the BOSZ synthetic spectral database, which was originally designed to fit the CALSPEC flux standards. These new local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) models incorporate both MARCS and ATLAS9 model atmospheres, updated continuous opacities, and 23 new molecular line lists. Methods. The new grid was calculated with Synspec using the LTE approximation and covers metallicities [M/H] from -2.5 to 0.75 dex, [alpha/M] from -0.25 to 0.5 dex, and [C/M] from -0.75 to 0.5 dex, providing spectra for 336 unique compositions. Calculations for stars between 2800 and 8000 K use MARCS model atmospheres, and ATLAS9 is used between 7500 and 16,000 K. Results. The new BOSZ grid includes 628,620 synthetic spectra from 50 nm to 32 microns with models for 495 Teff - log g parameter pairs per composition and per microturbulent velocity. Each spectrum has eight different resolutions spanning a range from R = 500 to 50,000 as well as the original resolution of the synthesis. The microturbulent velocities are 0, 1, 2, and 4 km/s. Conclusions. The new BOSZ grid extends the temperature range to cooler temperatures compared to the original grid because the updated molecular line lists make modeling possible for cooler stars. Abstract: We present results from a search for X-ray/gamma-ray counterparts of gravitational-wave (GW) candidates from the third observing run (O3) of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) network using the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (Swift-BAT). The search includes 636 GW candidates received in low latency, 86 of which have been confirmed by the offline analysis and included in the third cumulative Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalogs (GWTC-3). Targeted searches were carried out on the entire GW sample using the maximum--likelihood NITRATES pipeline on the BAT data made available via the GUANO infrastructure. We do not detect any significant electromagnetic emission that is temporally and spatially coincident with any of the GW candidates. We report flux upper limits in the 15-350 keV band as a function of sky position for all the catalog candidates. For GW candidates where the Swift-BAT false alarm rate is less than 10$^{-3}$ Hz, we compute the GW--BAT joint false alarm rate. Finally, the derived Swift-BAT upper limits are used to infer constraints on the putative electromagnetic emission associated with binary black hole mergers., Comment: 50 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables

Abstract: We applied machine learning to the unmet medical need of rapid and accurate diagnosis and prognosis of acute infections and sepsis in emergency departments. Our solution consists of a Myrna (TM) Instrument and embedded TriVerity (TM) classifiers. The instrument measures abundances of 29 messenger RNAs in patient's blood, subsequently used as features for machine learning. The classifiers convert the input features to an intuitive test report comprising the separate likelihoods of (1) a bacterial infection (2) a viral infection, and (3) severity (need for Intensive Care Unit-level care). In internal validation, the system achieved AUROC = 0.83 on the three-class disease diagnosis (bacterial, viral, or non-infected) and AUROC = 0.77 on binary prognosis of disease severity. The Myrna, TriVerity system was granted breakthrough device designation by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This engineering manuscript teaches the standard and novel machine learning methods used to translate an academic research concept to a clinical product aimed at improving patient care, and discusses lessons learned., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures

42. Professorial Intentions of Engineering PhDs from Historically Excluded Groups: The Influence of Graduate School Experiences

Abstract: Background: In addition to the benefits of a diverse faculty, many institutions are under pressure from students and administrators to increase the number of faculty from historically excluded backgrounds. Despite increases in the numbers of engineering PhD earners from these groups, the percentages of Black/African American and Hispanic/Latino tenure-track faculty have not increased, and the percentage of women remains low. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify how experiences in graduate school encourage or deter PhD earners from historically excluded groups in pursuing an engineering academic career. Method: We conducted 20 semi-structured interviews with engineering PhD students and recent graduates, with half of participants interested and half disinterested in pursuing an academic career after graduation. Results: Three key factors emerged as strongly influential on participants' desire to pursue an academic career: their relationship with their advisor, their perception of their advisor's work-life balance, and their perception of the culture of academia. Participants extrapolated their experiences in graduate school to their imagined lives as faculty. The results illuminate the reasons why engineering PhD earners from historically underrepresented groups remain in or leave the academic career pathway after graduate school. Conclusions: The findings of this study have important implications for how graduate students' and postdoc's relationships with their advisors as well as perceptions of their advisors' work-life balances and the culture of academia affect future faculty. We make recommendations on what students, faculty, and administrators can do to create a more inclusive environment to encourage students from historically excluded groups to consider academic careers.

Abstract: ImportanceHousing deposits and tenancy supports have become new Medicaid benefits in multiple states; however, evidence on impacts from these specific housing interventions is limited.ObjectiveTo evaluate the association of rental housing deposits and health care use among Medicaid beneficiaries receiving social needs case management as part of a Whole-Person Care (Medicaid 1115 waiver) pilot program in California.Design, setting, and participantsThis cohort study compared changes in health care use among a group of adults who received a housing deposit between October 2018 and December 2021 along with case management vs a matched comparison group who received case management only in Contra Costa County, California, a large county in the San Francisco Bay Area. All participants were enrolled in health and social needs case management based on elevated risk of acute care use. Data analysis took place from March 2023 to June 2024.ExposureRental housing deposit funds that covered 1-time moving transition costs. Funds averaged $1750 per recipient.Main outcomes and measuresChanges in hospitalizations, emergency department visits, primary care visits, specialty care visits, behavioral health visits, psychiatric emergency services, or detention intakes during the 6 months before vs 6 months after deposit receipt. 44. Bidirectional Energy Flow in the Photosystem II Supercomplex

Abstract: The water-splitting capability of Photosystem II (PSII) of plants and green algae requires the system to balance efficient light harvesting along with effective photoprotection against excitation in excess of the photosynthetic capacity, particularly under the naturally fluctuating sunlight intensity. The comparatively flat energy landscape of the multicomponent structure, inferred from the spectra of the individual pigment-protein complexes and the rather narrow and featureless absorption spectrum, is well known. However, how the combination of the required functions emerges from the interactions among the multiple components of the PSII supercomplex (PSII-SC) cannot be inferred from the individual pigment-protein complexes. In this work, we investigate the energy transfer dynamics of the C2S2-type PSII-SC with a combined spectroscopic and modeling approach. Specifically, two-dimensional electronic-vibrational (2DEV) spectroscopy provides enhanced spectral resolution and the ability to map energy evolution in real space, while the quantum dynamical simulation allows complete kinetic modeling of the 210 chromophores. We demonstrate that additional pathways emerge within the supercomplex. In particular, we show that excitation energy can leave the vicinity of the charge separation components, the reaction center (RC), faster than it can transfer to it. This enables activatable quenching centers in the periphery of the PSII-SC to be effective in removing excessive energy in cases of overexcitation. Overall, we provide a quantitative description of how the seemingly contradictory functions of PSII-SC arise from the combination of its individual components. This provides a fundamental understanding that will allow further improvement of artificial solar energy devices and bioengineering processes for increasing crop yield.

45. A retrospective study of the effects of a vasopressor bolus on systolic slope (dP/dt) and dynamic arterial elastance (Eadyn).

Abstract: BACKGROUND: To enhance the utility of functional hemodynamic monitoring, the variables systolic slope (dP/dt) and dynamic arterial elastance (Eadyn) are calculated by the Hypotension Prediction Index (HPI) Acumen® Software. This study was designed to characterize the effects of phenylephrine and ephedrine on dP/dt and Eadyn. METHODS: This was a retrospective, non-randomized analysis of data collected during two clinical studies. All patients required intra-operative controlled mechanical ventilation and had an indwelling radial artery catheter connected to an Acumen IQ sensor. Raw arterial pressure waveform data was downloaded from the patient monitor and all hemodynamic measurements were calculated off-line. The anesthetic record was reviewed for bolus administrations of either phenylephrine or ephedrine. Cardiovascular variables prior to drug administration were compared to those following vasopressor administrations. The primary outcome was the difference for dP/dt and Eadyn at baseline compared with the average after the bolus administration. All data sets demonstrated non-normal distributions so statistical analysis of paired and unpaired data followed the Wilcoxon matched pairs signed-rank test or Mann-Whitney U test, respectively. RESULTS: 201 doses of phenylephrine and 100 doses of ephedrine were analyzed. All data sets are reported as median [95% CI]. Mean arterial pressure (MAP) increased from 62 [54,68] to 78 [76,80] mmHg following phenylephrine and from 59 [55,62] to 80 [77,83] mmHg following ephedrine. Stroke volume and cardiac output both increased. Stroke volume variation and pulse pressure variation decreased. Both drugs produced significant increases in dP/dt, from 571 [531, 645] to 767 [733, 811] mmHg/sec for phenylephrine and from 537 [509, 596] to 848 [779, 930] mmHg/sec for ephedrine. No significant changes in Eadyn were observed. CONCLUSION: Bolus administration of phenylephrine or ephedrine increases dP/dt but does not change Eadyn. dP/dt demonstrates potential for predicting the inotropic response to phenylephrine or ephedrine, providing guidance for the most efficacious vasopressor when treating hypotension. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Data was collected from two protocols. The first was deemed to not require written, informed consent by the Institutional Review Board (IRB). The second was IRB-approved (Effect of Diastolic Dysfunction on Dynamic Cardiac Monitors) and registered on ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT04177225).

46. Saltwater intrusion and human health risks for coastal populations under 2050 climate scenarios.

Abstract: Populations consuming saline drinking water are at greater risk of high blood pressure and potentially other adverse health outcomes. We modelled data and used available datasets to identify countries of higher vulnerability to future saltwater intrusion associated with climate change in 2050 under Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP)4.5 and RCP8.5. We developed three vulnerability criteria to capture geographies with: (1) any coastal areas with projected inland saltwater intrusion of ≥ 1 km inland, (2) > 50% of the population in coastal secondary administrative areas with reliance on groundwater for drinking water, and 3) high national average sodium urinary excretion (i.e., > 3 g/day). We identified 41 nations across all continents (except Antarctica) with ≥ 1 km of inland saltwater intrusion by 2050. Seven low- and middle-income countries of higher vulnerability were all concentrated in South/Southeast Asia. Based on these initial findings, future research should study geological nuances at the local level in higher-risk areas and co-produce with local communities contextually appropriate solutions to secure equitable access to clean drinking water.

47. Machine learning for detection of heterogeneous effects of Medicaid coverage on depression.

Abstract: In 2008, Oregon expanded its Medicaid program using a lottery, creating a rare opportunity to study the effects of Medicaid coverage using a randomized controlled design (Oregon Health Insurance Experiment). Analysis showed that Medicaid coverage lowered the risk of depression. However, this effect may vary between individuals, and the identification of individuals likely to benefit the most has the potential to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the Medicaid program. By applying the machine learning causal forest to data from this experiment, we found substantial heterogeneity in the effect of Medicaid coverage on depression; individuals with high predicted benefit were older and had more physical or mental health conditions at baseline. Expanding coverage to individuals with high predicted benefit generated greater reduction in depression prevalence than expanding to all eligible individuals (21.5 vs 8.8 percentage-point reduction; adjusted difference = +12.7 [95% CI, +4.6 to +20.8]; P = 0.003), at substantially lower cost per case prevented ($16 627 vs $36 048; adjusted difference = -$18 598 [95% CI, -156 953 to -3120]; P = 0.04). Medicaid coverage reduces depression substantially more in a subset of the population than others, in ways that are predictable in advance. Targeting coverage on those most likely to benefit could improve the effectiveness and efficiency of insurance expansion. This article is part of a Special Collection on Mental Health.

Abstract: Precision pharmacology aims to manipulate specific cellular interactions within complex tissues. In this pursuit, we introduce DART.2 (drug acutely restricted by tethering), a second-generation cell-specific pharmacology technology. The core advance is optimized cellular specificity-up to 3,000-fold in 15 min-enabling the targeted delivery of even epileptogenic drugs without off-target effects. Additionally, we introduce brain-wide dosing methods as an alternative to local cannulation and tracer reagents for brain-wide dose quantification. We describe four pharmaceuticals-two that antagonize excitatory and inhibitory postsynaptic receptors, and two that allosterically potentiate these receptors. Their versatility is showcased across multiple mouse-brain regions, including cerebellum, striatum, visual cortex and retina. Finally, in the ventral tegmental area, we find that blocking inhibitory inputs to dopamine neurons accelerates locomotion, contrasting with previous optogenetic and pharmacological findings. Beyond enabling the bidirectional perturbation of chemical synapses, these reagents offer intersectional precision-between genetically defined postsynaptic cells and neurotransmitter-defined presynaptic partners.

Abstract: A significant challenge in measurements of neutrino oscillations is reconstructing the incoming neutrino energies. While modern fully-active tracking calorimeters such as liquid argon time projection chambers in principle allow the measurement of all final state particles above some detection threshold, undetected neutrons remain a considerable source of missing energy with little to no data constraining their production rates and kinematics. We present the first demonstration of tagging neutrino-induced neutrons in liquid argon time projection chambers using secondary protons emitted from neutron-argon interactions in the MicroBooNE detector. We describe the method developed to identify neutrino-induced neutrons and demonstrate its performance using neutrons produced in muon-neutrino charged current interactions. The method is validated using a small subset of MicroBooNE's total dataset. The selection yields a sample with $60\%$ of selected tracks corresponding to neutron-induced secondary protons.

Abstract: We present a deep learning-based method for estimating the neutrino energy of charged-current neutrino-argon interactions. We employ a recurrent neural network (RNN) architecture for neutrino energy estimation in the MicroBooNE experiment, utilizing liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) detector technology. Traditional energy estimation approaches in LArTPCs, which largely rely on reconstructing and summing visible energies, often experience sizable biases and resolution smearing because of the complex nature of neutrino interactions and the detector response. The estimation of neutrino energy can be improved after considering the kinematics information of reconstructed final-state particles. Utilizing kinematic information of reconstructed particles, the deep learning-based approach shows improved resolution and reduced bias for the muon neutrino Monte Carlo simulation sample compared to the traditional approach. In order to address the common concern about the effectiveness of this method on experimental data, the RNN-based energy estimator is further examined and validated with dedicated data-simulation consistency tests using MicroBooNE data. We also assess its potential impact on a neutrino oscillation study after accounting for all statistical and systematic uncertainties and show that it enhances physics sensitivity. This method has good potential to improve the performance of other physics analyses.
