This article studies the history and characteristics of the mediatic transposition of the character Patoruzú from comic books into animated films, in Argentina, comparing it with a similar case: Popeye in the United States. Where Popeye was a great success that impacted several generations of spectators, Patoruzú could only materialize at the time in a single short film, Upa en apuros. This article reflects upon the historical context that made the short film's production possible, the causes behind its commercial failure and the inherent esthetical factors concerning the format leap. Furthermore, it analyses the theme and motifs that appear in the short film in context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In socially monogamous species, extrapair paternity typically results from extrapair copulations, but it can also be due to rapid mate switching. Oring, Fleischer, Reed, and Marsden (1992, Nature, 359 (6396), 631–633) proposed a mechanism to explain the occurrence of extrapair paternity in sequentially polyandrous species: sperm stored by females from within-pair copulations with a previous mate could fertilize eggs in the clutch of a subsequent male. Despite being proposed decades ago, evidence for this hypothesis remains limited. We studied social polyandry, extrapair paternity and copulation behaviour in a population of the red phalarope, Phalaropus fulicarius, a nonterritorial, sex role-reversed shorebird, with male-only care, in Utqiaġvik, Alaska. We tested multiple predictions from the ‘sperm storage’ hypothesis. Extrapair paternity occurred in 11% (37/334) of the nests and 4% (42/1182) of the eggs were sired by a male other than the incubating parent. Although a female's initial mate occasionally sired offspring in her next clutch, our results suggest that sperm stored from a previous mate does not play a major role in explaining the occurrence of extrapair paternity in this sequentially polyandrous species. Instead, extrapair paternity was generally due to extrapair copulations by both sexes during the period between pair establishment and early incubation and to rapid mate switching by females in the context of attempts to acquire multiple care-giving males.

Rein Willink’s Relief Expedition to Molochna. Dutch doopsgezinden, Mennonite 'citizens of Dutch lineage' and Bolsheviks in Ukraine between 1920 and 1938. The communities of the Ukrainian Mennonites in Molochna had been ravaged during the First World War, the Russian Revolution and the Civil War. At the beginning of 1921, the Dutch doopsgezinden set up the General Committee for Foreign Emergency (ACBN). The ACBN collected more than two hundred thousand guilders to spend on a famine relief expedition, reconstruction aid and support for emigrants. In 1922, the Winterswijk patrician son Rein Willink led the expedition to Molochna, where he distributed 1600 tons of relief goods, mostly food parcels. As a result, the Mennonites suffered fewer deaths from starvation than their neighbors and their communities were able to get back on their feet relatively quickly. The Dutch doopsgezinden also supported Mennonites who fled from the Soviet Union since 1923. In 1924 they founded the Hollands Doopsgezind Emigranten Bureau (HDEB), which until 1930 supported about a thousand Mennonite emigrants who were on their way to the New World. When after 1930 emigration from the Soviet Union was no longer possible, the HDEB collected a hundred thousand guilders and sent food parcels to persecuted Mennonites in forced labor camps and victims of the 1932-1934 famine in Ukraine. From the beginning, Benjamin Unruh was the indispensable link between the doopsgezinden and the Mennonites. Having his residence in Karlsruhe, Germany, he came increasingly under the influence of the ideas of the Nazis. When he refused to distance himself from the Reichspogrom in 1938, the doopsgezinden ceased the cooperation with Unruh and their relations with the Ukrainian Mennonites ended. The Dutch doopsgezinden intended to contribute to the reconstruction by obtaining Molochna as an agricultural concession. In 1923 Willink managed to organize an investment fund with a capital of 75,000 dollars. Willink operated a small concession in Molochna without much success and returned to the Netherlands in 1927. In 1933 he started a reliefcampaign for the hungry in Ukraine. In the correspondence with his parents and the board of the ACBN, Willink provides a good picture of the developments in Molochna. He offers a Dutch perspective that complements self-images of Ukrainian Mennonites such as Benjamin Unruh, Benjamin Janz, Anna Baerg and Peter Dyck. From Willink's description of his commercial contacts with the Bolsheviks, the new rulers emerge as reliable contract partners.

This is a response to five critical commentaries on my 2018 book The Inheritance of Wealth , these being the papers in this symposium from Miranda Perry Fleischer, Jonathan Wolff, Stewart Braun, Nicholas Barry, and Colin Macleod. After a brief review of some recent empirical data on inherited wealth, these replies concentrate on some central themes discussed by these authors. These include the question of how to connect inheritance with the longstanding theoretical efforts to properly interpret and contrast luck-egalitarian and relational-egalitarian theories of justice; the role of the concept of solidarity in evaluating tax policy; questions about how an inheritance tax would impact differently on the middle class versus the very wealthy; and the case for furthering the defense of a ‘Rignano Scheme’ on which second- or third-generation inheritance is taxed at a higher rate than the transfer of newly created wealth.

The efforts by the American Mennonite Relief organization to provide famine relief to Russia in the early 1920s are relatively well known. Far less known are the actions of Dutch Mennonite relief efforts at the same time, which were intended to strengthen the ties between Dutch and Ukrainian Mennonites. These actions were led by Rein Willink, whose letters to his parents and reports to Frederik Fleischer, the secretary of the Algemeene Commissie voor Buitenlandsche Nooden (General Committee for Foreign Needs), are the main source for this article. Whereas the American Mennonite Relief directed its aid to the whole of Russia, the Dutch Mennonites restricted themselves to the Mennonite colony of Molochna. Although the total contribution of Dutch Mennonites to Russian co-religionists was modest compared to that of the North Americans, it was nonetheless very important when viewed from the perspective of Mennonites who did not emigrate from Molochna in the 1920s.

- Abstract
"A Man Out of Time" is a an animation piece meant to briefly summarize the history of the fundamentals of animation. This project follows the logic of animation 'eras' as described in Charles Solomon's book, "Enchanted Drawings of Charles Solomon," including the Precursory Era, the Silent Era, the Disney Era, the Studio Cartoon Era, the Television Era, and the Modern Day. In the Precursory Era, Pieter Von Mussechenbroek discovered that moving projected images can create the illusion of motion. In the Silent Era, "Gertie the Dinosaur" pioneered keyframing. In the Disney Era, the fundamentals of modern animation were developed and the introduction of sound changed much of the animation landscape. In the Studio Cartoon Era, animation bifurcated into those who kept true to the rubber hose animation style of the past and those who followed Disney's example for progressing animation's evolution. In the Television Era, animation began to be made more quickly and stories had to adapt to the new production schedule. In the Modern Day, animation pipelines such as Toon Boom and Flash have expedited the production process of animation, as well as have made animation available to anyone with the means to do so."Man Out of Time" seeks to represent these six eras of animation history by using 'Everyman,' a figure drawing, as a focal point. Everyman is comedically thrust out of the present and into each period of animation history, adapting his animation style to fit with the times, before crashing back home. The pieces wishes to briefly summarize this history for a casual audience to enjoy.

The development of information technology in the multimedia field is growing very rapidly today. Multimedia development is often found in making animated films. Animation is an image that moves and is arranged so that it makes inanimate objects appear to be moving. Animation initially has a problem, where it is difficult for an animator to create animation with complex movements to imagine directly and sometimes the results will look stiff. Max Fleischer also saw it as a problem, so he invented rotoscoping. Rotoscoping is a technique for making animation by tracing the movements of an actor. This technique is used to create movements that are complex to imagine directly so that the animation movement is realistic. In implementing rotoscoping techniques in an animated film, a folk tale entitled Hang Tuah Ksatria Melayu was adopted. This folktale will be packaged into a 3D animated film using rotoscoping techniques. With the creation of a 3D animated film, the folklore of Hang Tuah Ksatria Melayu, an animated film was created with realistic character movements and people get moral messages of Hang Tuah Ksatria Melayu.

Purpose: This study aims to identify technological factors and how these factors influence the XBRL adoption process of the regulators in Malaysia. Methodology: This paper applied Rogers’s (1983) adoption process and DiPietro, Wiarda, and Fleischer’s (1990) Technological, Organisational, and Environmental (TOE) framework. The paper adopted a case study approach consisting of an interview and document analysis. The data has been analysed with thematic analysis. Results: This paper shows ten (10) factors within the technological perspective—the relative advantage as driving factor while trialability are the challenging factor in the knowledge and persuasion phase. In the decision-making phase, compatibility of XBRL taxonomy and stability production of XBRL instance documents are the driving factors whilst stability of XBRL taxonomy, standardised XBRL taxonomy, standardised XBRL submission, availability of tools and software and observability are challenges in the XBRL adoption process. In the implementation and confirmation phase, the complexity of the XBRL taxonomy is considered a challenge in the XBRL adoption process. Implications: The findings in this paper serve as strategies to the other regulators that have plans to adopt XBRL as well as to attract the different government agencies to start with XBRL for reporting.

One of the most common problems in graph theory is the problem of finding strongly connected components (SCCs). Decomposing a directed graph into strongly connected components is a fundamental tool in graph theory with applications in compiler analysis, data mining, scientific computing, and other areas. In the mathematical theory of directed graphs, a graph is said to be strongly connected if every vertex is reachable from every other vertex in that graph. The strongly connected components of an arbitrary directed graph form a partition into subgraphs. Those subgraphs are themselves strongly connected. In this bachelor thesis, we will introduce the problem mentioned above in detail. We will try to understand its importance by looking at its applications. Then we will proceed exploring different approaches for finding strongly connected components of a directed graph. Finally, we will inspect their advantages and disadvantages by comparing them and draw a conclusion as to which algorithm performs best in a given situation.

A Kilian Fleischertől közölt (ZPE 207 [2018] 21–38) új Hypereidés-testimonium (Antipatros követei ellen) elemzése alapján a tanulmány történeti-filológiai érvekkel életrajzi és történelmi adatokat pontosít. Ps. Plutarchos (Vitae X Or. 850A) tudósítását egyértelműen úgy kell értelmezni, hogy Hypereidés Antipatros követeivel szemben Rhodoson Kr. e. 341-ben beszélt az Athénnal kötendő szövetség mellett. Az új töredék másfelől olyan beszédhez köthető, amely Athénban hangzott el a Kr. e. 330-as évek végén, mivel az jól illeszkedik Hypereidés más hasonló, makedónbarát politikusokat támadó beszédeinek sorába.

« Social CRM » is a new paradigm that has recently emerged to describe the use of social media for Customer Relationship Management. Today, the “Social CRM” offers companies the opportunity to communicate with customers and create value in partnership with them. The purpose of this paper is to explain the adoption of “Social CRM” by tourism SMEs in Morocco. It proposes a conceptual model of different adoption determinants, based on the theoretical theory of adoption of Rogers innovations and the Tornatzky and Fleischer 1990 TOE framework. To provide some answers to our research problem, we conducted an initial exploratory study among a dozen SMEs in the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region. The results were analysed using the N vivo12 software. The analysis showed that the main factors influencing the adoption of the «Social CRM», are the support of Top Management, the knowledge of employees in IS, the relative advantage, the compatibility, the ease of use, the testability, the observability of the results, and competitive pressure. Thus, a new group of factors is to be added to the initial model, which are the characteristics related to the SME leader. In order to generalize the results, a new confirmatory quantitative study will be implemented at a national level.

Following the idea of Fleischer who represented BCK-algebras by means of residuable elements of commutative integral pomonoids, we describe quantum B-algebras as subsets of residuable elements of posemigroups. Moreover, we show that quantum B-algebras correspond one-to-one to what we call Fleischer posemigroups. Such an approach is more economical than using logical quantales introduced by Rump.

Background: The optimal therapeutic approach for people suffering with unstable Charcot arthropathy of the midfoot is unclear. The purpose of this study was to examine the cost-effectiveness of three competing treatment strategies for adults suffering with unstable, midfoot Charcot arthropathy. Methods: A Markov model was utilized to compare Charcot reconstruction (CR), primary transtibial amputation (TTA) and lifetime bracing in three progressively worsening clinical scenarios: no foot ulcer, uncomplicated ulcer, and infected ulcer. Data regarding costs and probabilities were obtained from available literature. Primary outcomes included long-term costs, quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) and incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs). Willingness-to-pay was set at $100,000 USD. Results: TTA failed to show cost-effectiveness in comparison to other strategies available. Lifetime bracing was cost-effective in all clinical scenarios, with ICERs ranging from $6,970 to $15,010. CR was also cost-effective in the non-ulcerated and ulcerated scenarios, and offered the greatest potential for maximal QALYs gained, but failed to show value in the infected ulcer scenario. For CR to be cost-effective in the infected ulcer scenario, costs of surgery would need to lessen to $40,000 or complication rates would need to remain under 50%. The results in the non-ulcerated and ulcerated cohorts were robust to multiple sensitivity analyses. Conclusion: Bracing is a cost-effective option in all stages of Charcot arthropathy while CR appears to be only cost-effective when performed early (i.e., in the non-ulcerated and uncomplicated ulcerated patient). An opportunity for shared-decision making exists in the early stages of Charcot arthropathy, where patient goals and expectations may be assessed while multiple cost-effective options are still available. This chapter reads Richard Fleischer’s The Narrow Margin as a self-reflexive, quasi-modernist noir film that works to destabilize many of the thematic and stylistic tropes and conventions that have come to be associated with film noir. Building on George M. Wilson’s work on cinematic point of view and Doug Pye’s work on “suppressive narrative,” I situate the film in a larger tradition of similarly self-reflexive films in studio-era Hollywood. I show how the film uses stereotypical noir conventions, such as the femme fatale figure and chiaroscuro lighting to deliberately mislead the viewer about the nature of both individual character motivations as well as the broader narrative situation. In doing, I argue, the film calls attention to the constructed nature of these tropes and challenges the audience’s tendency to draw quick, unthinking conclusions based on received truths and stereotypes.

One story space that Disney helped evolve that leads directly to the eventual use of Computer Graphics in films in the early 1980s is the hybrid movie that included live action and animation. As shown in an earlier chapter, Walt first used the combination in 1922 for Alice’s Wonderland, the pilot made for the Alice series which he successfully sold to the distributor Margaret Winkler. The technique had worked successfully for Max Fleischer’s Out of the Inkwell series that featured Koko the Clown jumping into the real world from the cartoon world. Walt wanted to emulate that success and rather than copying, took the idea of hybrid in a different direction—he had a live action Alice enter the cartoon world. Walt hoped this innovation would be appeal to audiences and help him break into the industry, which it did. Live-action took less time, less skill, and less money to produce, and in those early days when he and his brother Roy were the only employees of the company and were struggling financially, it became the go-to mainstay of the first Alice shorts. As the studio hired more animators and became more stable financially, animation replaced live action so that it became almost non-existent in the later Alice shorts.

Two Fleischer cross slip modes of a dissociated screw dislocation 〈1 1 0〉/2 are quantitatively investigated in silver by molecular dynamics simulations. It is shown that contrary to previous studies where the acute angle mode is always preferred, the obtuse angle mode is also obtained. Our theoretical analysis demonstrates that the transition of the preferred mode in simulations arises from the dissociation width between the conjugate partials on the primary plane. This implies that all the interactions of dislocations have to be considered to describe the process of cross slip.

Research on graph searching has recently gained interest in computer science, mathematics, and physics. This paper studies fast searching of a fugitive in a graph, a model that was introduced by Dyer et al. (in: Fleischer, Xu (eds.) Algorithmic aspects in information and management, Springer, New York, 2008). We provide lower bounds and upper bounds on the fast search number (i.e., the minimum number of searchers required for capturing the fugitive) of complete k-partite graphs. We also investigate some special classes of complete k-partite graphs, such as complete bipartite graphs and complete split graphs. We solve the open problem of determining the fast search number of complete bipartite graphs, and present upper and lower bounds on the fast search number of complete split graphs.

With the invention of moving pictures, the creators sought to supplement them with sound. Even before the invention of cinemat, E. Reynaud in the optical theatre gave performances in which moving images were combined with sound. It was pre-cinema experience, which represented the theatre model of audiovisual show. The attempts to synchronize the dynamic images and sound were taken by T. Edison, S. Meshes, L. Gaumont, O. Kellum, E.Tigerstedt, J. Engel, G. Phocht and J. Massol. However, the systems suggested by these inventors were not perfect. An important step towards creation of a sound film was the appearance of the optical sound recording system Phonofilm designed by Lee de Forest. In 1923, he became acquainted with Brothers Fleischer, outstanding American animators. Together with H. Riesenfeld and E. Fadiman they organized Red Seal Pictures Corporation and began to shoot Ko-Ko Song Car-Tunes, which consisted of a series of animated shots Sing-alongs (featuring the famous bouncing ball). It was a kind of multimedia shots, as there was no plot, no character and no narrative structure. They were created basing on popular songs, but did not illustrate them. The Sing-alongs shots were produced for the audience to sing their favorite songs before the session, while reading the text of the songs from the screen. The animated ball bouncing on the syllables helped them to follow the rhythm of the melody. These films became the prototype of the modern karaoke and music animated shows. The series were released from May 1924 till September 1927. The Fleshers created more than 45 shots, more than 19 of which using the Phonofilm. The first sound animated shots where the images were synchronized with the sound and recorded on the same media, were released in 1925. The film Come to Travel on My Airship was the first where the speech was heard, and in the shot My Old House in Kentucky the Fleischers managed to synchronize the speech with the facial expressions of cartoon characters as they were speaking. When the animating and shooting technology changed, the film structure underwent changes too. Detailed animation parts with the story content appeared. The text animation became variable as well. Since the 1930s, the shots have included scenes with singers and jazz-bands. The animated film series Ko-Ko Song Car-Tunes shot by the Brothers Fleischer established the principle of movement and sound synchronism in the animation. They not only out paced the sound films by P. Terry and W. Disney, which were considered to be the first sound animation films for a long time, but also proved that the sound animation had been possible and the thirty-year era of the silent animation came to an end.

40. Phonograph Toys and Early Sound Cartoons: Towards a History of Visualized Phonography.

Smith, Jacob
- Abstract
Between 1909 and 1925, a number of toys were patented and produced that were operated by the spinning motion of a phonograph player. In this article, the author argues that these ‘phonotoys’ complement and refine our understanding of the genealogy of the sound cartoon, and suggests that popular recordings should be considered as an important expressive resource for early sound animators just as were film, vaudeville, and newspaper comic strips. By outlining a constellation of family resemblances shared by phonotoys and sound cartoons made by the Disney, Fleischer, Warner Brothers, Van Beuren, and Iwerks studios in the late 1920s and early 1930s, the article establishes a dialogue between sound cartoons of this era and phonograph culture that provides a fresh perspective on discussions in Animation Studies having to do with the representation of race, ethnicity, and gender, as well as strategies of sound/image synchronization. ANIMATORS , *ANIMATION (Cinematography) , *FILMMAKING , *PSYCHOANALYSIS - Abstract
This article is concerned with the affective relationship among bodies and film technologies in the process of building and using filmmaking instruments, taking as its object the early Rotoscope, a device patented by the legendary American animator Max Fleischer that entailed the projection of live-action film for use as a template in the drawing of animated figures, to which the live-action trace was thought to impart life-like, normative patterns of movement. Drawing from media archaeology, psychoanalytic theories of repetition, projection, and condensation, and object relations theory, this article offers an interpretation of some of the kinds of psychic interactions offered in animated film through traces of the Rotoscope’s production history found in the device’s patent drawings, its patent embodiments, and its published family legend. It is proposed that the device was the locus of a collective fraternal performance, serving as a shared ground for an array of condensations and displacements and enactments of repetition compulsion among the multiple bodies engaged in the production of the device, as well as among the multiple animated and live-action film bodies that crossed its production screens and patent pages. One objective of this article is to shift the interpretive and analytic focus in film studies from the filmstrip and the projected screen image to the relationship between bodies and technologies in the experience of making films, and making the filmic apparatus. A secondary objective of this article is to suggest that the approach to bodily movement embedded in the design of the Rotoscope was hardly normative. The device offered a means to stretch and distort both norms and stereotypes of human expression through movement. The rotoscoped body sometimes performed in ways that pushed the limits of viewer expectations about how a given body will, or should, move, in space or across the screen. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The troops-to-tasks analysis in military operational planning is the process where the military staff investigates who should do what, where, and when in the operation. In this paper, we describe a genetic algorithm for solving troops-to-tasks problems, which are typically solved manually. The study was motivated by a request from Norwegian military staff, who acknowledged the potential for solving the troops-to-tasks analysis more effectively by using optimization techniques. Also, NATO’s operational planning tool, TOPFAS, lacks an optimization module for the troops-to-tasks analysis. The troops-to-tasks problem generalizes the well-known resource-constrained project scheduling problem, and thus it is very difficult to solve. As the troops-to-tasks problem is particularly complex, the main purpose of our study was to develop an algorithm capable of solving real-sized problem instances. We developed a genetic algorithm with new features, which were crucial to finding good solutions. We tested the algorithm on two different data sets representing high-intensity military operations. We compared the performance of the algorithm to that of a mixed integer linear program solved by CPLEX. In contrast to CPLEX, the algorithm found feasible solutions within an acceptable time frame for all instances.
