1. Tomographic diffractometry of laser-induced plasma formations

Abstract

A sensitive optical diffractometry method is developed and utilized for advanced tomography of laser-induced air plasma formations. Using transverse diffractometry and Supergaussian plasma distribution modelling we extract the main parameters of the plasma being the plasma density, width and shape with 20 micrometer spatial resolution throughout the plasma formation. The experimentally recorded diffraction patterns fitted by the Supergaussian plasma model are found to capture unprecedentedly delicate traits in the evolution of the plasma from its effective birth and on. Key features in the spatial evolution of the plasma such as the 'escape position', the 'turning point' and the refocusing dynamics of the beam are identified and explored in details. 2. Enhanced transmission at the zeroth-order mode of a terahertz Fabry-Perot cavity

Abstract

A planar Fabry-Perot cavity with inter-mirror spacing significantly shorter than the probing wavelength is explored for its "zero-order mode" terahertz transmission. The enhanced transmission observed as d approaches 0 indicates that such cavities satisfy the resonance condition across a broad terahertz bandwidth. The experimental signatures from this elusive, "technically challenging" regime are evidenced using time-domain terahertz spectroscopy and are complemented by numerical calculations. The results raise intriguing possibilities for terahertz field modulation and pave new paths for strong coupling of multiple transition frequencies simultaneously., Comment: The file includes an elaborated supporting materials section

Abstract

THz fields induce orientation in gas phase molecules via resonant dipole-field interaction. The degree of orientation however remains severely limited due to the practical shortage of high THz-field amplitudes. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate a concerted Near-IR and THz excitation scheme that provides significant increase in the degree of orientation at room temperature gas ensembles. The experimental results are supported by theoretical simulations and a detailed discussion of the multiple coherent transition pathways involved in the scheme is presented.

4. Messy or Ordered? Multi-scale Mechanics DictatesShape-Morphing of Hierarchical 2D Fiber-Networks

Abstract

Shape-morphing networks of mesoscale filaments are a common hierarchical feature in biology and hold significant potential for a range of technological applications, from micro-muscles to shape-morphing optical devices. Here, we demonstrate both experimentally and computationally that the shape-morphing of highly-ordered 2D networks constructed of thermoresponsive mesoscale polymeric fibers strongly depends on the physical attributes of the single fiber, in particular on its diameter, as well as on the network's density. We show that based on these parameters, such fiber-networks exhibit one of two thermally driven morphing behaviors: (i) the fibers stay straight, and the network preserves its ordered morphology, exhibiting a bulk-like behavior; or (ii) the fibers buckle and the network becomes messy and highly disordered. Notably, in both cases, the networks display memory and regain their original ordered morphology upon shrinking. This hierarchical principle, demonstrated here on a range of networks, offers a new way for controlling the shape morphing of materials with mesoscale resolutions and elucidates that minute changes in the mesoscale structural attributes can translate to a dramatic change in the morphing behaviors at the macroscale., Comment: 19 PAGES, 4 FIGURES

We utilize the photoexcitation of a semiconductor material as a 'reflectivity switch' for a broadband terahertz field. Abstract

Light-induced orientation of gas phase molecules is a long-pursued goal in physics and chemistry. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a six-fold increase in the terahertz-induced orientation of iodomethane (CH3I) molecules at room temperature, provided by rotational pre-excitation with a moderately intense near-IR pulse. The paper highlights the underlying interference of multiple coherent transition pathways within the rotational coherence manifold and is analyzed accordingly. Abstract

Dielectric barrier discharge, originally called silent discharge, is the electrical discharge between two electrodes separated by an insulating dielectric barrier. A high-voltage alternating current is required to generate the discharge process. There are two major principles of operation to implement a high-voltage generator: resonant mode and forced mode. While operating in forced mode, the working frequency is forced by the user using internal electronic devices. On the other hand, in resonant mode, the operating frequency is determined by the resonant circuit, which includes the external capacitance, inductance, and resistance of the load. This work shows a flexible circuit based on a real-time digital signal processor and a full H-bridge that combines the two topologies and can be used as a controller for dielectric barrier discharge and a quadrupole mass filter with varying capacitance.
