E-learning environments are increasingly harnessing large language models (LLMs) like GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 for tailored educational support. This study introduces an approach that integrates dynamic knowledge graphs with LLMs to offer nuanced student assistance. By evaluating past and ongoing student interactions, the system identifies and appends the most salient learning context to prompts directed at the LLM. Central to this method is the knowledge graph's role in assessing a student's comprehension of topic prerequisites. Depending on the categorized understanding (good, average, or poor), the LLM adjusts its guidance, offering advanced assistance, foundational reviews, or in-depth prerequisite explanations, respectively. Preliminary findings suggest students could benefit from this tiered support, achieving enhanced comprehension and improved task outcomes. However, several issues related to potential errors arising from LLMs were identified, which can potentially mislead students. This highlights the need for human intervention to mitigate these risks. This research aims to advance AI-driven personalized learning while acknowledging the limitations and potential pitfalls, thus guiding future research in technology and data-driven education.

Financial documents are filled with specialized terminology, arcane jargon, and curious acronyms that pose challenges for general-purpose text embeddings. Yet, few text embeddings specialized for finance have been reported in the literature, perhaps in part due to a lack of public datasets and benchmarks. We present BAM embeddings, a set of text embeddings finetuned on a carefully constructed dataset of 14.3M query-passage pairs. Demonstrating the benefits of domain-specific training, BAM embeddings achieve Recall@1 of 62.8% on a held-out test set, vs. only 39.2% for the best general-purpose text embedding from OpenAI. Further, BAM embeddings increase question answering accuracy by 8% on FinanceBench and show increased sensitivity to the finance-specific elements that are found in detailed, forward-looking and company and date-specific queries. Richardson-Lucy deconvolution is widely used to restore images from degradation caused by the broadening effects of a point spread function and corruption by photon shot noise, in order to recover an underlying object. In practice, this is achieved by iteratively maximizing a Poisson emission likelihood. However, the RL algorithm is known to prefer sparse solutions and overfit noise, leading to high-frequency artifacts. The structure of these artifacts is sensitive to the number of RL iterations, and this parameter is typically hand-tuned to achieve reasonable perceptual quality of the inferred object. Overfitting can be mitigated by introducing tunable regularizers or other ad hoc iteration cutoffs in the optimization as otherwise incorporating fully realistic models can introduce computational bottlenecks. To resolve these problems, we present Bayesian deconvolution, a rigorous deconvolution framework that combines a physically accurate image formation model avoiding the challenges inherent to the RL approach. Our approach achieves deconvolution while satisfying the following desiderata: I deconvolution is performed in the spatial domain (as opposed to the frequency domain) where all known noise sources are accurately modeled and integrated in the spirit of providing full probability distributions over the density of the putative object recovered; II the probability distribution is estimated without making assumptions on the sparsity or continuity of the underlying object; III unsupervised inference is performed and converges to a stable solution with no user-dependent parameter tuning or iteration cutoff; IV deconvolution produces strictly positive solutions; and V implementation is amenable to fast, parallelizable computation., Comment: 5 figures

Active reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) can improve the performance of integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), and therefore enable simultaneous data transmission and target sensing. However, when the line-of-sight (LoS) link between the base station and the sensing target is blocked, the sensing signals suffer from severe path loss, resulting in an inferior sensing performance. To address this issue, this paper employs a sensor-aided active RIS to enhance ISAC system performance. The goal is to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio of the echo signal from the target at the sensor-array while meeting constraints on communication signal quality, power budgets, and RIS amplification limits. The optimization problem is challenging due to its non-convex nature and the coupling between the optimization variables. We propose a closed-form solution for receive beamforming, and a successive convex approximation based iterative method for transmit and reflection beamforming design. Communication networks are evolving from solely emphasizing communication to facilitating multiple functionalities. In this regard, integrated sensing, communication, and powering (ISCAP) provides an efficient way of enabling data transmission, radar sensing, and wireless power transfer simultaneously. Such a multi-functional network requires a multi-functional architectural solution. Toward this end, sensor-aided zero-energy reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (SAZE-RISs) offer an energy-efficient solution for ISCAP by meeting the requirements of the end users as well as supplying power for the RIS. This paper explores the use of SAZE-RIS within the ISCAP framework. First, we present the general system architecture, operational protocols, and main application scenarios for employing SAZE-RIS in ISCAP. Next, we discuss methods for managing the conflicting requirements of communication, sensing, and powering within ISCAP and the role of SAZE-RIS in this process. We then provide a detailed case study complete with simulation results, offering valuable insights into the design choices and tradeoffs that come into play when adopting this technology. Furthermore, we discuss the related challenges and open research avenues, highlighting areas that require further exploration to fully realize the potential of SAZE-RIS within this ISCAP framework., Comment: Accepted for publication in IEEE Network

Human movement analysis is crucial in health and sports biomechanics for understanding physical performance, guiding rehabilitation, and preventing injuries. However, existing tools are often proprietary, expensive, and function as "black boxes", limiting user control and customization. This paper introduces vail\'a-Versatile Anarcho Integrated Liberation \'Analysis in Multimodal Toolbox-an open-source, Python-based platform designed to enhance human movement analysis by integrating data from multiple biomechanical systems. vail\'a supports data from diverse sources, including retroreflective motion capture systems, inertial measurement units (IMUs), markerless video capture technology, electromyography (EMG), force plates, and GPS or GNSS systems, enabling comprehensive analysis of movement patterns. Developed entirely in Python 3.11.9, which offers improved efficiency and long-term support, and featuring a straightforward installation process, vail\'a is accessible to users without extensive programming experience. In this paper, we also present several workflow examples that demonstrate how vail\'a allows the rapid processing of large batches of data, independent of the type of collection method. This flexibility is especially valuable in research scenarios where unexpected data collection challenges arise, ensuring no valuable data point is lost. We demonstrate the application of vail\'a in analyzing sit-to-stand movements in pediatric disability, showcasing its capability to provide deeper insights even with unexpected movement patterns. This paper reports on the measurement of the ground-state spin and nuclear magnetic dipole moment of $^{61}$Cr. The radioactive ion beam was produced at the CERN-ISOLDE facility and was probed using high-resolution resonance ionization laser spectroscopy with the CRIS apparatus. The present ground-state spin measurement $I = \frac{1}{2}$, differing from the previously adopted $I =(\frac{5}{2})$, has significant consequences on the interpretation of existing beta decay data and nuclear structure in the region. The structure and shape of $^{61}$Cr is interpreted with state-of-the-art Large-Scale Shell Model and Discrete-Non-Orthogonal Shell Model calculations. From the measured magnetic dipole moment $\mu(^{61}$Cr$)=+0.539(7)~\mu_N$ and the theoretical findings, its configuration is understood to be driven by 2 particle - 2 hole neutron excitations with an unpaired $1p_{1/2}$ neutron. This establishes the western border of the $N=40$ Island Of Inversion (IoI), characterized by 4 particle - 4 hole neutron components. We discuss the shape evolution along the Cr isotopic chain as a quantum phase transition at the entrance of the $N=40$ IoI.

The ionization potential (IP) of radium monofluoride (RaF) was measured to be 4.969(2)[10] eV, revealing a relativistic enhancement in the series of alkaline earth monofluorides. The results are in agreement with a relativistic coupled-cluster prediction of 4.969[7] eV, incorporating up to quantum electrodynamics corrections. Using the same computational methodology, an improved calculation for the dissociation energy ($D_{0}$) of 5.54[5] eV is presented. This confirms that radium monofluoride joins the small group of diatomic molecules for which $D_{0}>\mathrm{IP}$, paving the way for precision control and interrogation of its Rydberg states.

The performance of a particle detector derived from nitride read-only memory (NROM) technology is evaluated, with immediate applications in space-based heavy ion radiation monitoring and detection. Irradiation exposures are performed using 40 MeV/u $^{78}$Kr and 10 MeV/u $^4$He particle beams at the Texas A&M University Cyclotron Institute. The results show a strong sensitivity to high-Z heavy ions, and medium sensitivity to low-Z heavy ions.

Anonymity is an important principle online. However, malicious actors have long used misleading identities to conduct fraud, spread disinformation, and carry out other deceptive schemes. With the advent of increasingly capable AI, bad actors can amplify the potential scale and effectiveness of their operations, intensifying the challenge of balancing anonymity and trustworthiness online. In this paper, we analyze the value of a new tool to address this challenge: "personhood credentials" (PHCs), digital credentials that empower users to demonstrate that they are real people -- not AIs -- to online services, without disclosing any personal information. Such credentials can be issued by a range of trusted institutions -- governments or otherwise. A PHC system, according to our definition, could be local or global, and does not need to be biometrics-based. Two trends in AI contribute to the urgency of the challenge: AI's increasing indistinguishability from people online (i.e., lifelike content and avatars, agentic activity), and AI's increasing scalability (i.e., cost-effectiveness, accessibility). Drawing on a long history of research into anonymous credentials and "proof-of-personhood" systems, personhood credentials give people a way to signal their trustworthiness on online platforms, and offer service providers new tools for reducing misuse by bad actors. In contrast, existing countermeasures to automated deception -- such as CAPTCHAs -- are inadequate against sophisticated AI, while stringent identity verification solutions are insufficiently private for many use-cases. After surveying the benefits of personhood credentials, we also examine deployment risks and design challenges. In light of the recently observed 800,000 barn thermal neutron absorption cross section of zirconium-88, this work investigates the fraction (isomeric yield ratio) of metastable versus ground state production of zirconium-89 and implications for ongoing measurements around zirconium-88 neutron absorption. The metastable state of zirconium-89 resides at 588 keV above the ground state with a half life of 4.2 minutes. A 5 $\mu$Ci zirconium-88 sample was irradiated for 10 minutes in the core of a TRIGA Mark II nuclear research reactor and measured with a high purity germanium detector 3 minutes after irradiation. The isomeric yield ratio was measured to be 74.9$\pm$0.6\%.

Metal rolling is a widespread and well-studied process, and many finite-element (FE) rolling simulations can be found in the scientific literature. However, these FE simulations are typically limited in their resolution of through-thickness variations. In this paper, we carefully assess the accuracy of a number of FE approaches, and find that at least 60 elements through-thickness are needed to properly resolve through-thickness variation; this is significantly more than is used elsewhere in the metal rolling literature. In doing so, we reveal an oscillatory stress pattern, which is not usually observed in simulations but which we can validate by comparison with recent analytical work, and which is completely deterministic, not arising from numerical noise or error. We show that these oscillations contribute to the formation of residual stress and may help predict curvature in asymmetric rolled sheets, a phenomenon which is currently not well understood. A new semi-analytic model of the metal rolling process is presented and validated against finite element simulations. The model generalises the classical slab method of modelling cold rolling, and for the first time, is able to predict the through-thickness stress and strain oscillations present in long thin roll gaps. The model is based on the asymptotic method of multiple scales, with the systematic assumptions of a long thin roll gap and a comparably small Coulomb friction coefficient. The leading-order solution varies only on a long length scale corresponding to the roll-gap length and matches with slab methods. The next-order correction varies on both this long length scale and a short length scale associated with the workpiece thickness, and reveals rapid stress and strain oscillation both in the rolling direction and through the thickness. For this initial derivation, the model assumes a rigid perfectly-plastic material behaviour. Despite these strong assumptions, this model compares well with finite element simulations that employ more realistic material behaviour (including elasticity and strain hardening). These assumptions facilitate the simplest possible model to provide a foundational understanding of the complex through-thickness behaviour observed in the finite element simulations, while requiring an order of only seconds to compute. Mitotic activity is an important feature for grading several cancer types. Counting mitotic figures (MFs) is a time-consuming, laborious task prone to inter-observer variation. Inaccurate recognition of MFs can lead to incorrect grading and hence potential suboptimal treatment. In this study, we propose an artificial intelligence (AI)-aided approach to detect MFs in digitised haematoxylin and eosin-stained whole slide images (WSIs). Advances in this area are hampered by the limited number and types of cancer datasets of MFs. Here we establish the largest pan-cancer dataset of mitotic figures by combining an in-house dataset of soft tissue tumours (STMF) with five open-source mitotic datasets comprising multiple human cancers and canine specimens (ICPR, TUPAC, CCMCT, CMC and MIDOG++). This new dataset identifies 74,620 MFs and 105,538 mitotic-like figures. We then employed a two-stage framework (the Optimised Mitoses Generator Network (OMG-Net) to classify MFs. The framework first deploys the Segment Anything Model (SAM) to automate the contouring of MFs and surrounding objects. An adapted ResNet18 is subsequently trained to classify MFs. OMG-Net reaches an F1-score of 0.84 on pan-cancer MF detection (breast carcinoma, neuroendocrine tumour and melanoma), largely outperforming the previous state-of-the-art MIDOG++ benchmark model on its hold-out testing set (e.g. +16% F1-score on breast cancer detection, p<0.001) thereby providing superior accuracy in detecting MFs on various types of tumours obtained with different scanners.

Rely-guarantee (RG) logic uses thread interference specifications (relies and guarantees) to reason about the correctness of multithreaded software. Unfortunately, RG logic requires each function postcondition to be "stabilized" or specialized to the behavior of other threads, making it difficult to write function specifications that are reusable at multiple call sites. This paper presents mover logic, which extends RG logic to address this problem via the notion of atomic functions. Atomic functions behave as if they execute serially without interference from concurrent threads, and so they can be assigned more general and reusable specifications that avoid the stabilization requirement of RG logic. Several practical verifiers (Calvin-R, QED, CIVL, Armada, Anchor, etc.) have demonstrated the modularity benefits of atomic function specifications. However, the complexity of these systems and their correctness proofs makes it challenging to understand and extend these systems. The radiative lifetime of the $A$ $^2 \Pi_{1/2}$ (v=0) state in radium monofluoride (RaF) is measured to be 35(1) ns. The lifetime of this state and the related decay rate $\Gamma = 2.86(8) \times 10^7$ $s^{-1}$ are of relevance to the laser cooling of RaF via the optically closed $A$ $^2 \Pi_{1/2} \leftarrow X$ $^2\Sigma_{1/2}$ transition, which makes the molecule a promising probe to search for new physics. RaF is found to have a comparable photon-scattering rate to homoelectronic laser-coolable molecules. Thanks to its highly diagonal Franck-Condon matrix, it is expected to scatter an order of magnitude more photons than other molecules when using just 3 cooling lasers, before it decays to a dark state. In this paper, we provide expressions for the secrecy outage probability (SOP) for suboptimal and optimal opportunistic scheduling schemes in a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) aided system with multiple eavesdroppers in approximate closed form. A suboptimal scheduling (SS) scheme is analyzed, which is used when the channel state information (CSI) of the eavesdropping links is unavailable, and the optimal scheduling (OS) scheme is also analyzed, which is used when the global CSI is available. For each scheme, we provide a simplified expression for the SOP in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime to demonstrate its behavior as a function of the key system parameters. At high SNR, the SOP saturates to a constant level which decreases exponentially with the number of RIS elements in the SS scheme and with the product of the number of RIS elements and the number of users in the OS scheme. We compare the performance of the opportunistic user scheduling schemes with that of a non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) based scheduling scheme which chooses a pair of users in each time slot for scheduling and we show that the opportunistic schemes outperform the NOMA-based scheme. We also derive a closed-form expression for the SOP of a decode-and-forward (DF) relay-aided scheduling scheme in order to compare it with that of the RIS-aided system. It is found that the RIS-aided system outperforms the relay-aided systems when the number of RIS elements is sufficiently large. An increased number of RIS elements is required to outperform the relay-aided system at higher operating frequencies.

Large language models (LLMs) are shaping a new user interface (UI) paradigm in writing tools by enabling users to generate text through prompts. This paradigm shifts some creative control from the user to the system, thereby diminishing the user's authorship and autonomy in the writing process. To restore autonomy, we introduce Textfocals, a UI prototype designed to investigate a human-centered approach that emphasizes the user's role in writing. Textfocals supports the writing process by providing LLM-generated summaries, questions, and advice (i.e., LLM views) in a sidebar of a text editor, encouraging reflection and self-driven revision in writing without direct text generation. Textfocals' UI affordances, including contextually adaptive views and scaffolding for prompt selection and customization, offer a novel way to interact with LLMs where users maintain full authorship of their writing. A formative user study with Textfocals showed promising evidence that this approach might help users develop underdeveloped ideas, cater to the rhetorical audience, and clarify their writing. However, the study also showed interaction design challenges related to document navigation and scoping, prompt engineering, and context management. Topological quantum codes, such as toric and surface codes, are excellent candidates for hardware implementation due to their robustness against errors and their local interactions between qubits. However, decoding these codes efficiently remains a challenge: existing decoders often fall short of meeting requirements such as having low computational complexity (ideally linear in the code's blocklength), low decoding latency, and low power consumption. In this paper we propose a novel bit-flipping (BF) decoder tailored for toric and surface codes. We introduce the proximity vector as a heuristic metric for flipping bits, and we develop a new subroutine for correcting degenerate multiple errors on adjacent qubits. Our algorithm has quadratic complexity growth and it can be efficiently implemented as it does not require operations on dynamic memories, as do state-of-art decoding algorithms such as minimum weight perfect matching or union find. The proposed decoder shows a decoding threshold of 7.5% for the 2D toric code and 7% for the rotated planar code over the binary symmetric channel., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

Though pre-training vision-language models have demonstrated significant benefits in boosting video-text retrieval performance from large-scale web videos, fine-tuning still plays a critical role with manually annotated clips with start and end times, which requires considerable human effort. To address this issue, we explore an alternative cheaper source of annotations, single timestamps, for video-text retrieval. We initialise clips from timestamps in a heuristic way to warm up a retrieval model. Then a video clip editing method is proposed to refine the initial rough boundaries to improve retrieval performance. A student-teacher network is introduced for video clip editing. The teacher model is employed to edit the clips in the training set whereas the student model trains on the edited clips. The teacher weights are updated from the student's after the student's performance increases. Our method is model agnostic and applicable to any retrieval models. We conduct experiments based on three state-of-the-art retrieval models, COOT, VideoCLIP and CLIP4Clip. Experiments conducted on three video retrieval datasets, YouCook2, DiDeMo and ActivityNet-Captions show that our edited clips consistently improve retrieval performance over initial clips across all the three retrieval models.

The emergence of technologies demanding high data rates and precise sensing, such as autonomous vehicles and IoT devices, has driven the popularity of integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) in recent years. ISAC provides a framework for communication and sensing, where both functionalities are performed simultaneously or in a coordinated manner. There are two levels of integration in ISAC: radio-communications coexistence (RCC), where communication and radar systems use distinct hardware, waveforms, and signal processing but share the spectrum; and dual-function radar-communications (DFRC), where communication and sensing share the same hardware, waveform, and signal processing. At the architectural level, intelligent metasurfaces are a key enabler for the sixth-generation (6G) of wireless communication due to their ability to control the propagation environment efficiently. With the potential to enhance communication and sensing performance, numerous studies have explored the gains of metasurfaces for ISAC. Moreover, certain ISAC frameworks address limitations associated with reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) for communication. Thus, integrating ISAC with metasurfaces enhances both technologies. This survey reviews the literature on metasurface-assisted ISAC, detailing challenges and opportunities. To provide a comprehensive overview, we begin with fundamentals of ISAC and metasurfaces. The paper summarizes state-of-the-art studies on metasurface-assisted ISAC, focusing on metasurfaces as separate entities between the transmitter and receiver (known as RIS) and emphasizing RCC and DFRC. We also review work on holographic ISAC, where metasurfaces are part of the transmitter and receiver. This article presents a theoretical framework for adapting the Common Model of Cognition to large generative network models within the field of artificial intelligence. This can be accomplished by restructuring modules within the Common Model into shadow production systems that are peripheral to a central production system, which handles higher-level reasoning based on the shadow productions' output. Implementing this novel structure within the Common Model allows for a seamless connection between cognitive architectures and generative neural networks.
