1. Understanding Support from School Counselors as Predictors of Mexican American Adolescents' College-Going Beliefs

Abstract

The impact of high school counselors' support on Mexican American adolescents' college-going beliefs was examined. We used a quantitative, predictive design to explore predictors of Mexican American adolescents' college-going beliefs. Perceptions of accessibility and expectations from school counselors positively impacted college-going beliefs while perceptions of appraisal negatively impacted college-going beliefs. In addition to a discussion regarding the importance of these findings, implications for school counselors and researchers are offered.

Abstract

The current study examined the impact of high school counselors' support of Latina/o students' career development outcomes. We used a quantitative, predictive design to explore Latina/o students' vocational self-efficacy and outcome expectations. Perceptions of investment, accessibility, positive regard, appraisal, and expectations from school counselors did not impact Latina/o students' vocational self-efficacy or outcome expectations. In addition to a discussion regarding the importance of these findings, implications for school counselors and researchers are offered.

Abstract

Myotonia congenita is a rare neuromuscular disorder caused by CLCN1 mutations resulting in delayed muscle relaxation. Extramuscular manifestations are not considered to be present in chloride skeletal channelopathies, although recently some cardiac manifestations have been described. We report a family with autosomal dominant myotonia congenita and Brugada syndrome. Bearing in mind the previously reported cases of cardiac arrhythmias in myotonia congenita patients, we discuss the possible involvement of the CLCN1-gene mutations in primary cardiac arrhythmia.

Abstract

ObjectivesThe objective of this study is to explore the clinical, radiological, and pathological manifestations of a rare subtype of prion disease and their implication for differential diagnosis in case of an early onset neuropsychiatric deterioration.MethodsWe discuss a patients’ clinical history, as well as the string of investigations and symptomatological evolution that finally led to a pathological diagnosis.ResultsOur patient had the extremely rare VV1 type sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD). We explain the differential diagnosis of progressive encephalomyelitis with rigidity and myoclonus and its implications for treatment.ConclusionsCJD, especially the VV1 subtype, can present at an early age with an insidious psychiatric onset. Classical findings of prion disease—14-3-3 protein, PSWC on electroencephalography, and magnetic resonance imaging patterns—are not always present. The presence of neural autoantibodies does not always implicate pathogenicity in the presence of other neurological/neurodegenerative conditions.

13. 'Since when Are We, Mothers Who Raise Their Kids Themselves, Dopes?' Debates on Women's Emancipation in Belgian Educational Television Programmes for Women (1954-1975)

Abstract

This research explores political-educational debates regarding the concept of women's emancipation in women and family programmes on Belgian television between 1954 and 1975. From the very beginning, the women's episodes were regarded as explicitly educational. The episodes were created to increase women's participation by means of their emancipation, but simultaneously continued to underline women's segregation from men. Therefore, we want to reveal the paradoxical effects of this emancipatory educational project for women. This paper takes as its starting point the debate about the concept of women's emancipation in the episode "From home economics to state home economics" in 1964, in which the emancipatory notion was used explicitly for the first time in the women's episodes. The highly debated status of this concept in viewers' letters to producer Paula Semer is intriguing. Women's emancipation had very different meanings based on the viewers' various cultural and ideological backgrounds and their positioning in discourse. Consequently, the letters reveal a highly ideological tension and therefore deepen our understanding of women's emancipation as a normative, political and historically constituted concept. This helps to understand how different (political) actors have used this episode and concept to establish, maintain and traverse borders separating not only men from women but also emancipated from non-emancipated women. In spite of the emancipatory project, limits were established by "closing" womanhood in terms of a proposed ideal of "emancipated womanhood", linking women's individuality to the collective and the state and simultaneously gendering the notion of citizenship. 15. A Comparison of Online and Traditional Graduate Counseling Courses: Learning Style, Instructional Preferences, and Educational Environment

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine learning style, instructional preferences, and educational climate of online verses traditional, face-to-face instruction. Subjects included 64 masters level students enrolled in a Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) Counselor Education Program Thirty students selected the online course experience, while thirty-four chose the face-to-face method of instruction. Learning styles were measured at the beginning of courses by the Grasha-Reichmann Student Learning Style Scales (GRSLSS). At the end of the semester courses the educational environment was measured by the Dundee Ready Education Environment Questionnaire (DREEM) Findings produced no statistically significant differences between learning styles of students enrolled in the face-to-face courses and online courses. Based on these findings, the researcher concluded that method of instruction and specific learning styles were independent of each other. The effect of method of instruction on students' perception of learning and students' perception of teachers as measured by the DREEM were statistically significant, favoring the online method of instruction. The effect size was "medium" for students' perception of learning and "large" for students' perception of teachers. There were no statistically significant differences on remaining DREEM subscale scores of academic self-perceptions, students' perception of atmosphere, and students' social self-perceptions. The intervention effect on the DREEM total score was statistically significant, favoring the online method of instruction. Abstract

Background: The frequency of late-onset Huntington's disease (>59 years) is assumed to be low and the clinical course milder. However, previous literature on late-onset disease is scarce and inconclusive. Objective: Our aim is to study clinical characteristics of late-onset compared to common-onset HD patients in a large cohort of HD patients from the Registry database. Methods: Participants with late- and common-onset (30–50 years)were compared for first clinical symptoms, disease progression, CAG repeat size and family history. Participants with a missing CAG repeat size, a repeat size of ≤35 or a UHDRS motor score of ≤5 were excluded. Results: Of 6007 eligible participants, 687 had late-onset (11.4%) and 3216 (53.5%) common-onset HD. Abstract

Objective To explore the effects of low-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (LF rTMS) on cortico-striatal-cerebellar resting state functional connectivity in Parkinson’s disease (PD), with and without dyskinesias. Methods Because there is increasing evidence of an involvement of the pre-supplementary motor area (pre-SMA) in the pathophysiology of levodopa induced dyskinesias, we targeted the right pre-SMA with LF rTMS in 17 PD patients. We explored the effects of one sham-controlled LF rTMS session on resting state functional connectivity of interconnected brain regions by using functional MRI, and how it is modified by levodopa. The clinical effect on motor function and dyskinesias was documented. Results As expected, one LF rTMS session did not alleviate dyskinesias. However, real, and not sham LF rTMS significantly increased the functional connectivity with the right putamen in patients with dyskinesias. In patients without dyskinesias, the real LF rTMS session significantly decreased functional connectivity in the right putamen and the cerebellum. We found no effects on functional connectivity after levodopa ingestion. Conclusion One session of 1 Hz rTMS has opposing effects on pre-SMA functional connectivity depending on the PD patients' dyskinesia state. Significance Patients dyskinesias state determines the way LF rTMS affects functional connectivity in late stage PD.

29. Control of mRNA translation preserves endoplasmic reticulum function in beta cells and maintains glucose homeostasis

Abstract

Type 2 diabetes is a disorder of hyperglycemia resulting from failure of beta cells to produce adequate insulin to accommodate an increased metabolic demand. Here we show that regulation of mRNA translation through phosphorylation of eukaryotic initiation factor 2 (eIF2[alpha]) is essential to preserve the integrity of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and to increase insulin production to meet the demand imposed by a high-fat diet. Accumulation of unfolded proteins in the ER activates phosphorylation of eIF2[alpha] at Ser51 and inhibits translation. To elucidate the role of this pathway in beta-cell function we studied glucose homeostasis in Eif2s1 [sup.tm1Rjk] mutant mice, which have an alanine substitution at Ser51. Heterozygous (Eif2s1 [sup.+/tm1Rjk]) mice became obese and diabetic on a high-fat diet. Profound glucose intolerance resulted from reduced insulin secretion accompanied by abnormal distension of the ER lumen, defective trafficking of proinsulin, and a reduced number of insulin granules in beta cells. Abstract

Professional counselors experience increasing levels of ethical complaints when they provide opinions in child custody cases; the complaints question their competency levels. The purpose of the study was to examine competencies and ethical considerations for 277 counselors and 66 psychologists. The study used a new, validated professional competence standards instrument through a closed-ended survey. Data analysis included a t test and found that psychologists had higher levels of competency than did counselors, a Mann–Whitney U test found that psychologists had higher levels of complaints than did counselors, and factorial analyses of variance showed a main effect between experience and ethical complaints. Recommendations for future research include studying factors influencing levels of competency among counselors when providing testimony. These findings may assist the counseling profession with a greater understanding of competency in custody matters, resulting in counselors better serving children and families embroiled in conflicted divorce and custody disagreements, and minimizing the negative impact on the mental health of all involved.

Abstract

Objective: To study the effect of Low Frequency repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (LF rTMS) on brain metabolites in late stage Parkinson's disease (PD) patients (disease duration at least 4 years and Hoehn and Yahr (1969) score at least 2 in OFF). Several neuroimaging data support a role for preSupplementary Motor Area (pre-SMA) involvement in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease. Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (H-1-MRS) measures in vivo metabolites, but results in PD brain remain conflicting and little is known of the effect of LF rTMS thereupon.Methods: We investigate the neurochemical profile of the right pre-SMA in 17 late stage PD patients (11 male and 6 female, mean age of 71 years) before and after one session of sham controlled 1 Hz rTMS (1000 pulses, 16 minutes), focusing on the tNAA/tCr and tCho/tCr ratios.Results: The tNAA/tCr ratio was unaffected by one session of LF rTMS. We did observe a significant effect of real LF rTMS on the tCho/tCr ratio, inversely correlated with disease duration, and not related to the presence of dyskinesias. As expected, one session of LF rTMS did not affect clinical outcome.Conclusions: LF rTMS at the right pre-SMA in late stage Parkinson's disease patients does not alter tNAA/tCr, but influences tCho/tCr ratio, in particular in patients with shorter disease duration.Significance: Pre-SMA LF rTMS seems to influence membrane turnover, more importantly in patients with shorter disease duration. Abstract

The mammalian β-cell has particular properties that synthesize, store, and secrete insulin in quantities that are matched to the physiological demands of the organism. To achieve this task, β-cells are regulated both acutely and chronically by the extracellular glucose concentration. Several in vivo and in vitro studies indicate that preservation of the glucose-responsive state of β-cells is lost when the extracellular glucose concentration chronically deviates from the normal physiological condition. Experiments with the protein synthesis inhibitor cycloheximide suggest that the maintenance of the functional state of β-cells depends on protein(s) with rapid turnover. Analysis of newly synthesized proteins via two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and highdensity gene expression microarrays demonstrates that the glucose-dependent preservation of β-cell function is correlated with glucose regulation of a large number of β-cell genes. Two different microarray analyses of glucose regulation of the mRNA profile in β-cells show that the sugar influences expression of multiple genes involved in energy metabolism, the regulated insulin biosynthetic/secretory pathway, membrane transport, intracellular signaling, gene transcription, and protein synthesis/degradation.
