Abstract

This paper proposes a self-learning framework to incrementally train (fine-tune) a personalized Keyword Spotting (KWS) model after the deployment on ultra-low power smart audio sensors. We address the fundamental problem of the absence of labeled training data by assigning pseudo-labels to the new recorded audio frames based on a similarity score with respect to few user recordings. By experimenting with multiple KWS models with a number of parameters up to 0.5M on two public datasets, we show an accuracy improvement of up to +19.2% and +16.0% vs. the initial models pretrained on a large set of generic keywords. The labeling task is demonstrated on a sensor system composed of a low-power microphone and an energy-efficient Microcontroller (MCU). By efficiently exploiting the heterogeneous processing engines of the MCU, the always-on labeling task runs in real-time with an average power cost of up to 8.2 mW. On the same platform, we estimate an energy cost for on-device training 10x lower than the labeling energy if sampling a new utterance every 5 s or 16.4 s with a DS-CNN-S or a DS-CNN-M model. Our empirical result paves the way to self-adaptive personalized KWS sensors at the extreme edge.

8. Field tests on a full-scale steel chimney subjected to vortex-induced vibrations

Abstract

Industrial chimneys, launch vehicles and stacks are examples of large diameter circular cross section structures which can be prone to cross-wind vortex-induced vibrations. VIV has been extensively studied for both fundamental and applied issues, but few documented studies concern high Reynolds number regime (over 500 000) in atmospheric turbulent wind. This paper introduces a field test on a slender light and low damped chimney designed to experience supercritical VIV at moderate wind velocity. The chimney was recently erected in a wind monitored field, near the Atlantic coast of France. The purpose of this paper is to present the first vibration results obtained during a sequential 13 days period in September 2020. A statistical analysis has been performed on the amplitude and dominant frequency responses and results are reported in term of probability distribution as a function of wind speed and direction. VIV events of low (under 15 % of diameter) to moderate amplitude (over 30 % of diameter) have been highlighted in a range of wind velocity 25 % lower than expected, along with significant influence of the wind direction. Low turbulent easterly wind giving vortex induced vibrations with the highest amplitude.

13. Twin Strouhal numbers in pressure loading of circular cylinder at high Reynolds numbers

Abstract

We present a wind tunnel experiment on a large smooth circular cylinder mounted between walls. The Reynolds number range of interest is [800 000 : 2 170 000]. This low supercritical regime is often encountered in wind engineering applications, especially the excitation of flexible circular structures by vortex shedding. Main measurements are the unsteady wall pressure distributions around the cylinder by means of synchronized pressure taps with high resolution in time and space. By using the bi-orthogonal decomposition of this set of signals, twin Strouhal numbers are detected which correspond to the second and the fourth terms of the decomposition. These terms are found to produce the unsteady lift on the cylinder with a main contribution of the second one for which the associated Strouhal number is close to the one usually found at subcritical Reynolds numbers.

Abstract

High Performance and Energy Efficiency are critical requirements for Internet of Things (IoT) end-nodes. Exploiting tightly-coupled clusters of programmable processors (CMPs) has recently emerged as a suitable solution to address this challenge. One of the main bottlenecks limiting the performance and energy efficiency of these systems is the instruction cache architecture due to its criticality in terms of timing (i.e., maximum operating frequency), bandwidth, and power. We propose a hierarchical instruction cache tailored to ultra-low-power tightly-coupled processor clusters where a relatively large cache (L1.5) is shared by L1 private caches through a two-cycle latency interconnect. To address the performance loss caused by the L1 capacity misses, we introduce a next-line prefetcher with cache probe filtering (CPF) from L1 to L1.5. We optimize the core instruction fetch (IF) stage by removing the critical core-to-L1 combinational path. We present a detailed comparison of instruction cache architectures' performance and energy efficiency for parallel ultra-low-power (ULP) clusters. Focusing on the implementation, our two-level instruction cache provides better scalability than existing shared caches, delivering up to 20\% higher operating frequency. Abstract

Objective In the face of the ongoing circulation of SARS‐CoV‐2, the durability of neutralization post–COVID‐19 vaccination in immune‐mediated inflammatory disease (IMID) is a key issue, as are the effects of medications. Methods Adults (n = 112) with inflammatory bowel disease, psoriasis/psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, spondylarthritis, and systemic lupus were recruited from participating Canadian medical centers from 2021 to 2023. We focused on log‐transformed neutralization (lentivirus methods) as a continuous outcome, with separate models for wild‐type and Omicron strains BA.1 and BA.5. Results Compared with 30 to 120 days postvaccination, subsequent periods were associated with greater neutralization in unadjusted models for wild‐type, BA.1, and BA.5 strains and against the BA.1 strain in adjusted models. Rituximab was associated with lower neutralization for the BA.1 strain in adjusted models, with a similar trend for BA.5. In methotrexate users, there were trends for less neutralization of BA.1 and BA.5 in all unadjusted models, whereas in adjusted models, there was significantly lower neutralization only for the wild type. Three or more doses and Omicron‐specific vaccines were both independently associated with better neutralization ability for all three strains. A COVID‐19 infection within six months before sampling was associated with higher neutralization of wild type and BA.1 in adjusted analyses. Anti–tumor necrosis factor agents were associated with lower neutralization ability for BA.5 in adjusted analyses. Conclusion Neutralization responses in immunosuppressed individuals with IMID were durable over time and were augmented by more than three doses and Omicron‐specific vaccines. Less neutralization was seen with certain medications. Our work clarifies the joint effects of vaccine history, infection, and medications on COVID‐19 immunity.

Abstract

Individuals with movement disorders often face challenges in writing independently due to factors such as spasticity, lack of precise motor control, muscle weakness, and tremors. This paper aims to develop a handwriting assistive device (HAD) for individuals with movement disorders, to stabilize the motion of user's hand, through initial needs assessment, iterative design, and a preliminary evaluation. The research is scoped to include only initial testing with a small user group, six potential users with movement disorders, providing foundational insights for future refinement. The findings from the initial needs assessment revealed that current assistive technologies do not fully meet handwriting challenges for individuals with motor impairments. The HAD prototype, developed with adjustable damping mechanism and customizable handles to suit different levels of motor control, enabled steadier handwriting in preliminary testing with six participants. Children drew shapes more accurately, and some traced letters they couldn't otherwise. The adult participant showed greater fluidity and legibility, completing tasks 4.81 times faster with the HAD. The qualitative feedback indicated the device's potential to enhance handwriting independence and usability across age groups. Future prospects for this study include developing an electronic version of the HAD, allowing real-time adjustable damping to better support users' voluntary movements while further stabilizing involuntary motions.

Abstract

ABSTRACTDietary omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) and the gut microbiome affect each other. We investigated the impact of supplementation with Buglossoides arvensis oil (BO), rich in stearidonic acid (SDA), on the human gut microbiome. Employing the Mucosal Simulator of the Human Intestinal Microbial Ecosystem (M-SHIME), we simulated the ileal and ascending colon microbiomes of four donors. Our results reveal two distinct microbiota clusters influenced by BO, exhibiting shared and contrasting shifts. Notably, Bacteroides and Clostridia abundance underwent similar changes in both clusters, accompanied by increased propionate production in the colon. However, in the ileum, cluster 2 displayed a higher metabolic activity in terms of BO-induced propionate levels. Accordingly, a triad of bacterial members involved in propionate production through the succinate pathway, namely Bacteroides, Parabacteroides, and Phascolarctobacterium, was identified particularly in this cluster, which also showed a surge of second-generation probiotics, such as Akkermansia, in the colon. Finally, we describe for the first time the capability of gut bacteria to produce N-acyl-ethanolamines, and particularly the SDA-derived N-stearidonoyl-ethanolamine, following BO supplementation, which also stimulated the production of another bioactive endocannabinoid-like molecule, commendamide, in both cases with variations across individuals. Spearman correlations enabled the identification of bacterial genera potentially involved in endocannabinoid-like molecule production, such as, in agreement with previous reports, Bacteroides in the case of commendamide. This study suggests that the potential health benefits on the human microbiome of certain dietary oils may be amenable to stratified nutrition strategies and extend beyond n-3 PUFAs to include microbiota-derived endocannabinoid-like mediators.

Abstract

Abstract Image‐based analyses from an online repository on rhino horns asserted that declines in size over time could be the consequence of poaching and hunting. We provide reflections on whether the sample was representative enough to make generalizations, the study adequately accounted for the main sources of horn‐size variation and the statistical methods were adequate to be confident in the results. The sample had a limited representation, most coming from zoo animals. We highlight several sources of variance in horn size that such a sample could not evaluate robustly using linear regressions, both for establishing a proxy for horn size corrected for size of a rhino and assessing trends over time. Nevertheless, horn poaching continues to be the key threat to rhinos. Addressing the underlying drivers of poaching and trafficking are key priorities for responsible public debate, policy making and interventions. 20. Accelerating RNN-based Speech Enhancement on a Multi-Core MCU with Mixed FP16-INT8 Post-Training Quantization

Abstract

This paper presents an optimized methodology to design and deploy Speech Enhancement (SE) algorithms based on Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) on a state-of-the-art MicroController Unit (MCU), with 1+8 general-purpose RISC-V cores. To achieve low-latency execution, we propose an optimized software pipeline interleaving parallel computation of LSTM or GRU recurrent blocks, featuring vectorized 8-bit integer (INT8) and 16-bit floating-point (FP16) compute units, with manually-managed memory transfers of model parameters. To ensure minimal accuracy degradation with respect to the full-precision models, we propose a novel FP16-INT8 Mixed-Precision Post-Training Quantization (PTQ) scheme that compresses the recurrent layers to 8-bit while the bit precision of remaining layers is kept to FP16. Experiments are conducted on multiple LSTM and GRU based SE models trained on the Valentini dataset, featuring up to 1.24M parameters. Thanks to the proposed approaches, we speed-up the computation by up to 4x with respect to the lossless FP16 baselines. Differently from a uniform 8-bit quantization that degrades the PESQ score by 0.3 on average, the Mixed-Precision PTQ scheme leads to a low-degradation of only 0.06, while achieving a 1.4-1.7x memory saving. Thanks to this compression, we cut the power cost of the external memory by fitting the large models on the limited on-chip non-volatile memory and we gain a MCU power saving of up to 2.5x by reducing the supply voltage from 0.8V to 0.65V while still matching the real-time constraints. Abstract

Summary: Background: Cambodia targets P. falciparum malaria elimination by 2023 and all human malaria species by 2025, aligning with WHO's Mekong Malaria Elimination program. The Intermittent Preventive Treatment for Forest Goers (IPTf) project aimed at forest-specific malaria elimination. The study aims to pinpoint the main factors driving malaria transmission in Cambodian forests and evaluate the initial implementation and effectiveness of IPTf in accelerating the elimination of malaria by treating and preventing infections among at-risk populations in these areas. Methods: From March 11, 2019, to January 30, 2021, a malaria intervention program took place in isolated forests in Northeast Cambodia. The first phase focused on observing forest goers (FGs) within the forests, documenting their malaria risk. In the second phase, a monthly artesunate-mefloquine IPTf was implemented by trained forest malaria workers who were former FGs conducting interviews, blood collection, and IPTf administration. Findings: Throughout the two-year period, 2198 FGs were involved in 3579 interviews, with 284 in both the observation and intervention phases. Following IPTf implementation, PCR-confirmed malaria prevalence significantly decreased from 2.9% to 0.5% for P. falciparum and from 21.0% to 4.7% for P. vivax. Among the 284 participants tracked through both phases, malaria prevalence fell from 2.5% to 0.3% for P. falciparum and from 22.5% to 3.7% for P. vivax. The intervention phase demonstrated a rapid decline in P. falciparum prevalence among mobile and previously inaccessible populations, while also revealing a higher P. falciparum infection risk associated with activities inaccurately labelled as farming, underscoring the need for customized interventions. Interpretation: The successful implementation of IPTf in Cambodia's remote forests has markedly decreased malaria prevalence among high-risk groups. Cambodia's National Malaria Program has acknowledged this strategy as essential for malaria elimination intervention, endorsing forest-specific approaches to meet the 2025 goal of eradicating all human malaria species in Cambodia. ObjectiveEndocannabinoids and their N-acyl-ethanolamines (NAEs) and 2monoacyl-glycerols (2-MAGs) congeners are involved in the central and peripheral regulation of energy homeostasis, they are present in human milk and are associated with obesity. Abstract

The Internet-of-Things requires end-nodes with ultra-low-power always-on capability for a long battery lifetime, as well as high performance, energy efficiency, and extreme flexibility to deal with complex and fast-evolving near-sensor analytics algorithms (NSAAs). We present Vega, an IoT end-node SoC capable of scaling from a 1.7 $\mathrm{\mu}$W fully retentive cognitive sleep mode up to 32.2 GOPS (@ 49.4 mW) peak performance on NSAAs, including mobile DNN inference, exploiting 1.6 MB of state-retentive SRAM, and 4 MB of non-volatile MRAM. To meet the performance and flexibility requirements of NSAAs, the SoC features 10 RISC-V cores: one core for SoC and IO management and a 9-cores cluster supporting multi-precision SIMD integer and floating-point computation. Vega achieves SoA-leading efficiency of 615 GOPS/W on 8-bit INT computation (boosted to 1.3TOPS/W for 8-bit DNN inference with hardware acceleration). On floating-point (FP) compuation, it achieves SoA-leading efficiency of 79 and 129 GFLOPS/W on 32- and 16-bit FP, respectively. Objective: SARS-CoV-2 remains the third most common cause of death in North America. We studied the effects of methotrexate and tumor necrosis factor inhibitor (TNFi) on neutralization responses after COVID-19 vaccination in immune-mediated inflammatory disease (IMID). Methods: Prospective data and sera of adults with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), spondyloarthritis (SpA), psoriatic arthritis (PsA), and systemic lupus (SLE) were collected at six academic centers in Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec between 2022 and 2023. Sera from two time points were evaluated for each subject. Neutralization studies were divided between five laboratories, and each lab’s results were analyzed separately using multivariate generalized logit models (ordinal outcomes: absent, low, medium, and high neutralization). Odds ratios (ORs) for the effects of methotrexate and TNFi were adjusted for demographics, IMID, other biologics and immunosuppressives, prednisone, COVID-19 vaccinations (number/type), and infections in the 6 months prior to sampling. The adjusted ORs for methotrexate and TNFi were then pooled in random-effects meta-analyses (separately for the ancestral strains and the Omicron BA1 and BA5 strains). Results: Of 479 individuals (958 samples), 292 (61%) were IBD, 141 (29.4%) were RA, and the remainder were PsA, SpA, and SLE. The mean age was 57 (62.2% female). For both the individual labs and the meta-analyses, the adjusted ORs suggested independent negative effects of TNFi and methotrexate on neutralization. The meta-analysis adjusted ORs for TNFi were 0.56 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.39, 0.81) for the ancestral strain and 0.56 (95% CI 0.39, 0.81) for BA5. The meta-analysis adjusted OR for methotrexate was 0.39 (95% CI 0.19, 0.76) for BA1. Conclusions: SARS-CoV-2 neutralization in vaccinated IMID was diminished independently by TNFi and methotrexate. As SARS-CoV-2 circulation continues, ongoing vigilance regarding optimized vaccination is required.

Abstract

The scientific and medical community faced an unprecedented global health hazard that led to nearly 7 million deaths attributable to the rapid spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. In spite of the development of efficient vaccines against SARS-CoV-2, many people remain at risk of developing severe symptoms as the virus continues to spread without beneficial patient therapy. The hyper-inflammatory response to SARS-CoV-2 infection progressing to acute respiratory distress syndrome remains an unmet medical need for improving patient care. The viral infection stimulates alveolar macrophages to adopt an inflammatory phenotype regulated, at least in part, by the cluster of differentiation 36 receptor (CD36) to produce unrestrained inflammatory cytokine secretions. We suggest herein that the modulation of the macrophage response using the synthetic CD36 ligand hexarelin offers potential as therapy for halting respiratory failure in SARS-CoV-2-infected patients.

45. Dietary food patterns as determinants of the gut microbiome–endocannabinoidome axis in humans

Abstract

Abstract The gut microbiota and the endocannabinoidome (eCBome) play important roles in regulating energy homeostasis, and both are closely linked to dietary habits. However, the complex and compositional nature of these variables has limited our understanding of their interrelationship. This study aims to decipher the interrelation between dietary intake and the gut microbiome–eCBome axis using two different approaches for measuring dietary intake: one based on whole food and the other on macronutrient intakes. We reveal that food patterns, rather than macronutrient intakes, were associated with the gut microbiome–eCBome axis in a sample of healthy men and women (n = 195). N-acyl-ethanolamines (NAEs) and gut microbial families were correlated with intakes of vegetables, refined grains, olive oil and meats independently of adiposity and energy intakes. Specifically, higher intakes in vegetables and olive oil were associated with increased relative abundance of Clostridiaceae, Veillonellaceae and Peptostreptococaceae, decreased relative abundance of Acidominococaceae, higher circulating levels of NAEs, and higher HDL and LDL cholesterol levels. Our findings highlight the relative importance of food patterns in determining the gut microbiome–eCBome axis. They emphasize the importance of recognizing the contribution of dietary habits in these systems to develop personalized dietary interventions for preventing and treating metabolic disorders through this axis.

Abstract

BackgroundRecent studies reported a link between high salt diet (HSD) and clinical exacerbation in mouse models of autoimmune diseases, mainly through the induction of pathogenic Th17 cells and/or HSD-induced dysbiosis. However, the topic remains controversial and not fully understood.PurposeIn this study, we investigated the effects of HSD on the development of experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU) in C57BL/6J mice.Methods and resultsUnexpectedly, our data showed a significant attenuating effect of HSD on disease severity of native EAU, induced by direct immunization with IRBP peptide. That said, HSD had no effect on EAU disease severity induced by adoptive transfer of semi-purified auto-reactive IRBP-specific T lymphocytes. Accordingly, HSD did not affect IRBP-specific systemic afferent immune response as attested by no HSD-linked changes in T lymphocytes proliferation, cytokine production and Treg proportion. Gut microbiota analysis from cecal samples in naïve and EAU mice demonstrated that HSD affected differentially α-diversity between groups, whereas β-diversity was significantly modified in all groups. Unknown Tannerellaceae was the only taxon associated to HSD exposure in all treatment groups. Interestingly, a significantly higher abundance of unknown Gastranaerophilales, with potential anti-inflammatory properties, appeared in HSD-fed native EAU mice, only.DiscussionIn conclusion, our study suggests a possible impact of HSD on gut microbiota composition and consequently on development and clinical severity of EAU. Further studies are required to investigate the potential beneficial role of Gastranaerophilales in EAU.

Abstract

Many people living with neurological disorders, such as cerebral palsy, stroke, muscular dystrophy or dystonia experience upper limb impairments (muscle spasticity, loss of selective motor control, muscle weakness or tremors) and have difficulty to eat independently. The general goal of this project is to develop a new device to assist with eating, aimed at stabilizing the movement of people who have movement disorders. A first iteration of the device was validated with children living with cerebral palsy and showed promising results. This validation however pointed out important drawbacks. This paper presents an iteration of the design which includes a new mechanism reducing the required arm elevation, improving safety through a compliant utensil attachment, and improving damping and other static balancing factors.

Abstract

Children with unilateral cerebral palsy have movement impairments that are predominant to one of their upper extremities (UE) and are prone to a phenomenon named "developmental disregard", which is characterized by the neglect of their most affected UE because of their altered perception or consciousness of this limb. This can cause them not to use their most affected hand to its full capacity in their day-to-day life. This paper presents a prototype of a wearable technology with the appearance of a smartwatch, which delivers haptic feedback to remind children with unilateral cerebral palsy to use their most affected limb, and which increase sensory afferents to possibly influence brain plasticity. The prototype consists of an accelerometer, a vibration motor and a microcontroller with an algorithm that detects movement of the limb. After a given period of inactivity, the watch starts vibrating to alert the user.
