Sculling motion is a swimming technique executed in a vertical position with the head above the water's surface and, based on the technical recommendation, should be performed maintaining an elbow flexion angle of 90°, arms kept stationary while the forearms move. In order to verify if this recommendation is indeed realistic, the aim of this study was to describe the elbow flexion angle ant its angular velocity, linear speed and range of motion of the shoulder, elbow and wrist during the sculling motion. Data were calculated using three-dimensional kinematic process from underwater video images of ten athletes of synchronized swimming. The results indicate that the arm is relatively stationary and the forearm moves, which agrees with the technical recommendation. However, the elbow flexes and extends, which contradicts the technical recommendation. These findings should be considered when this action is practiced, especially in synchronized swimming, in which sculling motion is a fundamental technique.

Rugby is a very popular sport around the world and on the rise in Brazil. It is characterized by the existence of two basic tactics positions (forwards and backs), in which athletes have distinguishing functional demands and physical characteristics. Although the international literature presents a number of interesting data about the physiological and anthropometric profile of these athletes, little attention has been spent to Brazilian athletes. This study aimed to verify the performance of 20 amateur rugby players and to compare the aerobic power (VO2max), anaerobic endurance and isokinetic strength in backs (n = 10) and forwards (n = 10). A computerized gas analyzer (CPX-D - MGC) was used to determine VO2 and VCO2. A Wingate test was used to determine the anaerobic endurance. An isokinetic dynamometer (Cybex Norm) was used to measure isokinetic strength. The body composition was evaluated according to five components of ISAK. The data were compared through Student t test for independent samples (p < 0.05). Our results show a significant difference between backs and forwards in the variables VO2max (47.8 &± 4.5 and 38.8 &± 5.5 ml.kg-1.min-1); 2nd ventilatory threshold (38.3 &± 3.0 and 31.6 &± 4.2 ml.kg-1.min-1); average power (7.5 &± 0.6 and 6.3 &± 1.1 W.kg-1); total work (225.7 &± 18.4 and 187.9 &± 31.7 J.kg-1); body weight (78.5 &± 9.5 and 101.6 &± 12.6 kg); fat mass (24.7 &± 3 , 2 and 29.7 &± 4.6%) and muscle mass (48.7 &± 4.2 and 44.5 &± 3.4%) respectively (p < 0.05). Thus, there are significant differences, related to the tactic position and function, in Rugby athletes. Furthermore our results shows that even at the amateur level athletes, physiological and anthropometric characteristics are similar when compared to professional level players.

Abstract The aim of this study was to compare and verify the agreement of maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max) values obtained from tests on land and in water. Twelve recreational water polo players (30.5 ± 7.7 years; 79.2 ± 7.2 kg body mass; 179.1 ± 5.9 cm height) were assessed in two phases: (1) in laboratory with maximal test on a cycle ergometer and (2) in a swimming pool with maximal test in eggbeater kick. Maximum values obtained in the two tests (respectively, cycle ergometer, and eggbeater kick: VO2 max = 40.2 ± 2.7 ml.kg-1.min-1 and 38.4 ± 5.7 ml.kg-1.min-1; RER = 1.17 ± 0.08 and 1.19 ± 0.12; HR max = 181.4 ± 11.7 bpm and 179 ± 11.7 bpm; IEP = 20 and 20) did not show significant differences. According to the Bland-Altman analyses, there were acceptable limits of agreement between the two tests (land and water). Therefore, it can be concluded that the eggbeater kick test is a specific and valid protocol to asses VO2 max in water polo players.

This study aimed to describe the statistical methods used and statistical practice in PhD thesis in sports and exercise sciences, and to examine the time trends of statistical methods prevalence. We analyzed 50 PhD theses supported by a post-graduate program recognized by CAPES and defended between January 2003 and December 2013. Most theses used more than two statistical methods, and T-test, ANOVA, multiple comparisons, correlation and reliability analysis were the most used approaches. Less than 50% of both experimental and observational theses reported the effect size (ES), confidence interval (CI), sample size calculation and observed power analysis. The use of multiple comparisons in experimental studies significantly increased in the last 5-years compared to 2004-2008 time period. No other significant changes were observed. Results suggest that several statistical methods are used in quantitative design studies. Due to the observed large prevalence of statistical deficiencies (lack of reporting ES, CI, power analysis), postgraduate programs should have qualified statisticians with a major say in checking the statistical quality of PhD theses and subsequent articles.
