In this paper we have studied the mechanisms of so-called ‘indentation creep’ in a zirconium alloy. Nanoindentation was used to obtain strain rate data as the sample was indented at room temperature, at a homologous temperature below that for which creep behaviour would be expected for this material. A high value of strain rate was obtained, consistent with previous work on indentation creep. In order to elucidate the mechanism of time-dependent deformation, a load relaxation experiment was performed by uniaxial loading of a sample of the same alloy. By allowing relaxation of the sample from a peak load in the tensile test machine, a similar stress exponent was obtained to that seen in the nanoindentation creep test. We conclude that for metals, at temperatures below that at which conventional creep will occur, nanoindentation ‘creep’ proceeds through deformation on active slip systems that were initiated by prior loading beyond the plastic limit. It is therefore more appropriate to describe it as a viscoplastic process, and not as creep deformation.

Laser Shock Peening allows the introduction of deep compressive residual stresses into metallic components. It is applicable to most metal alloys used for aerospace applications. The method is relatively expensive in application, and therefore development studies often rely heavily on Finite Element Modeling to simulate the entire process, with a high computational cost. A different approach has been used recently, the so-called eigenstrain approach. The present study looks at the feasibility of applying the eigenstrain method for prediction of the residual stress in a sample that contains curved surface features. The eigenstrain is determined from a simple geometry sample, and applied to the more complex geometry to predict the residual stress after laser shock peening. In particular the prediction of residual stress at a curved edge, and for different values of material thickness, have been studied. The research has demonstrated that the eigenstrain approach gives promising results in predicting residual stresses when only the thickness is altered, but when the geometry of the peened surface is altered the eigenstrain method seems to slightly overestimate the residual stresses. This highlights a limitation of the eigenstrain method where the change in geometry means that the inelastic strain field as a consequence of a treatment – in this case laser shock peening – no longer has similitude.

The strength mismatch effect on the deformation behaviour of defect-free cross-weld tensile specimens, where there is a variation in strength along the length of the specimen, was investigated through 2D finite element analysis. A simple bi-material model, which is generally used in current engineering assessments (e.g. R6 “Assessment of the integrity of structures containing defects”) to examine the strength mismatch effect on the deformation and fracture behaviour of a weld which actually includes a heat-affected-zone, could lead to non- conservative or overly conservative predictions. In fusion welded components, one would generally observe that there is a heat-affected zone where the material properties are different from the weld and base material, and there is a continuous gradient of properties between the two. The material properties in HAZ are generally assigned discretely; however, in our multi-material model these properties are successfully assigned continuously by embedding subroutines into finite element model. This multi-material approach was used to examine the effect of strength mismatch on the local and global deformation behavior of fusion welds. It has been found that the bi-material modeling, by ignoring the HAZ, and multi-material discrete HAZ modeling of the cross-weld specimens leads to unrealistically biaxial stresses at the interfaces where there is an abrupt variation of the material properties. However, multi- material continuous HAZ modeling eliminates unrealistic stress biaxiality and enables to examine the local deformation more accurately. It was also found that the global stress-strain behaviour obtained using the bi- material and multi-material modeling is different.

Patents lie at the heart of engineering as a permanent and ongoing record of invention. We have taught the subject for about 5 years in both UG and PG courses, written from scratch owing to the absence of textbooks aimed specifically at engineers. Most practising engineers develop patent skills on the job rather than through conventional courses. But there is a need to present such courses as early as possible in the engineering curriculum, so that graduates have a flying start in their first employment.
