Abstract

Information is frequently retrieved from valid personal ID cards by the authorised organisation to address different purposes. The successful information retrieval (IR) depends on the accuracy and timing process. A process which necessitates a long time to respond is frustrating for both sides in the exchange of data. This paper aims to propose a series of state-of-the-art methods for the journey of an Identification card (ID) from the scanning or capture phase to the point before Optical character recognition (OCR). The key factors for this proposal are the accuracy and speed of the process during the journey. Abstract

This paper describes an approach for offline recognition of handwritten mathematical symbols. The process of symbol recognition in this paper includes symbol segmentation and accurate classification for over 300 classes. Many multidimensional mathematical symbols need both horizontal and vertical projection to be segmented. However, some symbols do not permit to be projected and stop segmentation, such as the root symbol. Besides, many mathematical symbols are structurally similar, specifically in handwritten such as 0 and null. There are more than 300 Mathematical symbols. Therefore, designing an accurate classifier for more than 300 classes is required. This paper initially addresses the issue regarding segmentation using Simple Linear Iterative Clustering (SLIC). Experimental results indicate that the accuracy of the designed kNN classifier is 84% for salient, 57% Histogram of Oriented Gradient (HOG), 53% for Linear Binary Pattern (LBP) and finally 43% for pixel intensity of raw image for 66 classes. 87 classes using modified LeNet represents 90% accuracy. Abstract

The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) promotes the realisation of the right of persons with disabilities to education through Article 24 - Education. Universal Design in Education (UDE) fosters a whole systems approach so that the physical and digital environments, the educational services, and the teaching and learning can be easily accessed, understood and used, by the widest range of learners and by all key stakeholders, in a more inclusive environment. The whole systems approach incorporates the entire educational environment, as well as the recognition of the capacity for all learners (including persons with disabilities) to learn, and environments which are fully accessible and inclusive. This paper discusses methods whereby a systems approach can be applied to various aspects of education across the life continuum. It further advocates the inclusion of Universal Design as subject matter in curricula and assessment, to ensure a broader and more widespread adoption across the educational spectrum. Abstract

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disa-bilities defines the right to equal opportunities for all citizens. Article 21 of the convention details how the accessibility of information and communications should be ensured in practice. As a result of the convention, international, Euro-pean and national policies, standards and law have been established, creating a legal and binding framework for compliance. This paper considers the current standardisation for digital accessibility and laws of the European Union member states, in particular Ireland, France and Spain in relation to compliance for digital educational practices. In view of the IMPACT (Inclusive Method based on the Perception of Accessibility and Compliance Testing) project, the paper will as-sess the level of compliance with digital accessibility standards at regional level within the aforementioned Eurozone Member States. The authors will address the current accessibility requirements and outline support and training strategies to support professional digital content creators and educators in conformance with existing guidelines and requirements. Abstract

This is the first book that documents and reflects on an aspect of the Temporary Contemporary initiative. Launching in 2018, Temporary Contemporary is a collaboration between the School of Art, Design and Architecture at the University of Huddersfield and Kirklees Council. This collaboration, in the form of an action research project, has sought to reflect on the efficacy, meanings and wider contribution of cultural activity in Huddersfield town and beyond. It is one small part of a bigger project about the future cultural heart of Huddersfield. The title Creating Vibrant Spaces to Support the Conditions for Creative and Cultural Activity refers to the aims of Temporary Contemporary in its entirety. The initiative achieves these aims through populating former retail spaces in the town with exhibitions and events, fostering partnerships and creating networking opportunities for cultural and creative producers, repurposing fine historic buildings and making connections with rich cultural traditions in the town including music, theatre and textiles. This book provides one contribution to the many discussions about the role of culture in towns and cities. The insights of our collaborative research may be of interest and use to policy makers, academics, artists, curators and anyone else with a concern about the cultural and social future of towns and cities in the UK and beyond.

Abstract

The congruence of representation and reality has been constructed as an accepted necessity within the evolution and adaption of human cognition where it functions as a key feature of human survival within the material real. However, the adventure of contemporary science has questioned whether human cognition is even capable of exploring the complex traces of the deep structure of reality. If as has been speculated by Quentin Meillassoux in his rereading of Henri Bergson perception itself is a double limit based on both a biological process of filtering the stream of particles and a cognitive process of selectivity then our phenomenological apprehension of the real is one of poverty not dominance. This limit not only repurposes our relation to materiality within the multiplicity of reality but implies a limit to the human structure of thinking. If the structure of human interiority is exactly composed of our limited experience of an exteriority then the possibility arises that the structure of reality itself gives rise to or even creates the structure of human thinking. At the pragmatic level the structure of human thought derives from an ideal structure of physical reality and is capable of an imaginary metaphysics of infinite speed, unlimited by the mere physical constraints of light or gravity and redolent of a dynamism unconstrained by the human sensory apparatus. These questions have emerged simultaneously this century within the realisation that it is an unsupported assumption that the biologically determined human conception of reality does not mean that reality has achieved its apex in human consciousness. In freeing the sensory conception of thought from that definition, the specter of mathematical ideation and schematic artistic conception assumes a primacy in the new representations of reality that exist beyond both the real and the imaginary and are conceived within a speculative possibility of new forms conceived without the aid of the senses. This paper seeks to address these concerns as they are made manifest within new and emerging practices in Art and Design.

Full Text, Thesis (Masters), Master of Visual Arts (MVA), Queensland College of Art, Arts, Education and Law, Making a visual model of experience is one of the ways that human beings come to understand and respond to the world. For some artists, mimetic description is unsatisfying and inadequate. The shift in focus from representation to presentation in the art of non-relation offers an alternative model precisely because it is able to highlight the inherent inexpressibility of being without completely giving up on the task at hand. The hand of the painter might reach further into the mind than the writer because it is able to distance itself from the constrictions of language, while holding onto some kind of essential (though impure) experience of being. I maintain that expanded painting is able to do this by engaging in a game of ‘the same and the other’: that is, by focusing on the gaps within the artist’s relationship to experience, ideas, and materials, and, by extension, the gaps between the artist’s intention and the viewer’s relationship with the works’ visual, tactile, and spatial dimensions. In this exegesis, I examine some of the ideas of writer Samuel Beckett; in particular, his commitment to ‘the imperative of saying’ in the face of inexpressibility, which is uttered through the slippage between relation and non-relation, and his use of ‘visual abstinence’. I maintain that Beckett’s artistic project of ‘ill seen ill said’ offers artists a strategy when seeking to translate experience of the world through materials because it interrupts the ready-made responses between subject and object. While acknowledging the differences in the goals and challenges of writing and visual art production, I will relate these ideas to contemporary artists Christopher Wool, Terri Brooks, Thomas Nozkowski, Ron Gorchov, and Paul Wallach. Finally, I will consider how these concerns play out in my studio by engaging with Beckett’s strategy of exhausting the possible through language, image, and space. Full Text, Thesis (Masters), Master of Visual Arts (MVA), Queensland College of Art, Arts, Education and Law, This research project explores how photographs of an installation can recontextualise specific Brisbane sites to initiate dialogues about human interaction. The sites chosen are peripheral, located at the edges of significant human activity and largely disregarded. Through installing the reductive form of the cube, I aim to engage with the nature and geometry of the sites. The cube has a rich presence in art as a material object of mathematical form that can prompt a re-evaluation of the surrounding environment. Artists such as Tony Smith, Hans Haacke, Antony Gormley, and Ilkka Halso have used to the cube in installations to interrogate sites and to initiate dialogues. The cube as referenced by these artists has much to do with scale and human presence. Similarly, my use of the cube, encapsulated in my photographs, aims to mediate the selected sites by creating a sense of dislocation that could stimulate dialogues about places, history, and human impacts.
