Given the persistence of health inequities in the United States, scholars and health professionals alike have turned to the social determinants of health (SDH) framework to understand the overlapping factors that produce and shape these inequities. However, there is scant empirical literature on how frontline health and social service workers perceive and apply the SDH framework, or related movements such as the right to health, in their daily practice. Our study seeks to bridge this gap by applying constructs from the sociological imagination and structural competency (an emerging paradigm in health professions' education) to understand the perspectives and experiences of social work case managers, community health workers, legal advocates, and mental health counselors at a maternal and child health center in a large US city. This frontline workforce displayed strong sociological imagination, elements of structural competency, and engagement with the principles of the right to health. Workers shared reflections on the SDH framework in ways that signaled promising opportunities for frontline workers to link with the global movement for the right to health. We offer a novel approach to understanding the relationships between frontline worker perspectives on and experiences with the SDH, sociological imagination, structural competency, and the right to health.

Identify and prioritise strategies to optimise physical activity participation in the community gym setting for young adults with cerebral palsy. An e-Delphi method was implemented over three rounds with four stakeholder groups (young adults with cerebral palsy, their families, gym staff or exercise professionals, and health professionals). Strategies for change were identified by the stakeholders in round 1. In rounds 2 and 3, strategies for change were rated on the importance for implementation using a 7-point Likert scale (1 being lowest importance, 7 being highest). The consensus was achieved if ≥70% of participants identified a strategy as high importance. Seventy participants (20 young adults 10 family members, 21 health professionals, and 19 exercise professionals) identified 83 strategies for improving gym participation. Of these, 44 strategies met the consensus criteria. The highest priority strategies related to changing the physical environment, addressing cost barriers, gym staff training, and developing partnerships between sectors. Addressing physical accessibility, cost of attendance and the skills of gym staff were agreed upon by the stakeholder groups as priority areas for future resource allocation and research translation. Clinicians and community leisure facilities must work with consumers to implement strategies in their local contexts. The purposes of the study are to (1) conceptualize the push-pull-mooring (PPM) framework in the context of fitness centers and (2) empirically examine how factors of push, pull, and mooring effects predict switching behavior. In Study 1, a qualitative method is used to unearth factors of push, pull, and mooring effects pertinent to fitness centers. To this end, a higher-order reflective-formative PPM framework is developed. In Study 2, a quantitative approach using two-wave survey data is undertaken to examine the PPM framework in relation to switching behavior. The results show the significant positive direct influences of push and pull effects on switching behavior. Mooring effects are found to negatively predict switching behavior and negatively moderate the positive relationships of push-pull effects and switching behavior. Fitness centers offer an opportunity for investigating the indirect transmission of pathogens. Many people with varying levels of personal hygiene share sports equipment where direct surface-to-skin contact occurs. This study aimed to investigate the bacterial load and fungal and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) contamination on predetermined sports equipment in fitness centers in Northern Cyprus. Additionally, volunteer personal trainers and gym members were screened to detect whether they were carriers of MRSA. Samples were collected from six fitness centers on sports equipment. MRSA carrier status was investigated for personal trainers (n=10) and gym members (n=100). The study used culture-dependent techniques and used SPSS 20 software for statistical analysis. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to an increase of digitally supported home-based sport and exercise activities. This paper asks how these digital sport and exercise (DSE) offers are experienced by consumers and compares the experiential value of DSE activities with similar on-site, offline sport and exercise (OSE) activities. The paper is based on cross-sectional online survey data from active members of two university sports centers in Germany. Findings reveal that a relative strength of DSE compared to similar OSE offers is the higher degree of autonomy experienced by users. However, this comes at the expense of the social, physical, affective, competence, and motivational experience. DSE courses are somewhat better rated by self-disciplined and healthy individuals, but lower rated by participants with a high motor competence. Overall, data lend support to the notion that DSE was just a stopgap for many during the lockdowns. Scholars have recognized the critical role of switching costs in predicting consumption behavior. However, a scale measuring fitness consumers' switching costs was unavailable. The purpose of the study is to develop and validate a fitness switching costs scale (FSCS). A three-step study was conducted. Step 1 generated a pool of items, which were then content validated by expert judges (N = 6). Step 2 (n = 455) examined the reliability and validity of the FSCS. Finally, Step 3 (n = 441) cross-validated the FSCS. The results provided support for the reliability and validity of the FSCS composed of the third-order formative construct (i.e. switching costs) with the four second-order formative constructs (i.e. procedural costs, relationship costs, financial costs, and convenience costs) and the 11 first-order reflective constructs (i.e. adjustment to a new fitness center, lack of other attractive fitness centers, information search costs, fitness center relationship loss, employee relationship loss, other consumer relationship loss, termination fee, loss of price benefit, loss of location benefit, loss of service-hour benefit, and loss of equipment availability benefit). The FSCS allows researchers to obtain reliable results and advances theory development in fitness switching costs. Background: Establishing a balanced diet is necessary for obtaining the required daily micronutrients and macronutrients. However, the importance of using dietary supplements to complement one's diet is a significant aspect to consider. While studies have reported the prevalence and patterns of dietary supplements in Saudi Arabia, most focused on university students, women in their reproductive life—particularly during pregnancy—or male athletes. Hence, the objective of this study is to estimate the prevalence and patterns of dietary supplement usage, along with the associated sociodemographic and psychiatric predictors among women attending fitness centers in Saudi Arabia. Methods: A cross-sectional design was utilized using a structured questionnaire to collect data on dietary intakes such as consumption, nutrition supplements, type of nutrition supplements, and reason for consuming dietary supplements. Data collection occurred in female fitness centers, with participants accessing the questionnaires through QR codes linked to online Google forms. The dietary usage was assessed using a structured questionnaire developed by the study authors, and depressive and anxiety symptoms were assessed using the PHQ-9 and the GAD-7 scales, respectively. SPSS 23.0 was utilized to analyze the data, and a multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the association between sociodemographic and psychiatric predictors and patterns of dietary supplement usage. The results were presented by reporting an unadjusted and adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with 95 % Confidence Intervals (CIs). Results: The total number of participants in this study was 453 women. Half of the 453 women (46.1 %) consumed dietary supplements, and (84.0 %) reported taking proteins, caffeine, creatinine, mineral salts, fish oil, and/or amino acids or a combination of these dietary supplements. A considerable number of women (41.0 %) reported that a doctor, dietitian, or trainer motivated them to take the dietary supplement, and (38.0 %) of women self-prescribed dietary supplements. More than half (51 %) of the women consumed dietary supplements to compensate for nutrient deficiency, and 48 % used them to improve their health. Women who did not work to earn were 53 % less likely to consume dietary supplements (AOR = 0.47; [95 % CI: 0.30–0.72]) than women who reported working to earn either in the private or government sector. Depressed women were (42 %) less likely to consume dietary supplements than non-depressed women (AOR = 0.58; [95 % CI: 0.33–0.99]) after adjusting for sociodemographic variables and other medical conditions. Conclusion: It has been evident that a large proportion of women enrolled in the fitness center report consuming dietary supplements, mostly to compensate for energy and to improve overall health. The findings highlight that non-working and depressed women were less likely to use dietary supplements than their counterparts. By understanding these patterns, the community can tailor health interventions and policies to ensure equitable access to proper dietary support, especially for those facing challenges like depression and unemployment. Future research on a larger sample of women outside fitness centers is encouraged to explore further dietary supplement consumption and patterns among diverse population groups, and to ultimately develop health guidelines for the appropriate use of supplements.

The aim of the study was to determine the most suitable fitness center for members by using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method, which identifies the criteria fitness members consider when choosing a fitness center. First, interviews were conducted with 20 fitness center members to determine the criteria. Then, the values obtained from the comparisons between the criteria, made by experts, were analyzed and evaluated using the AHP method. Eight criteria were determined: instructor qualification, interactions, cleaning, price, staff qualification, atmosphere, accessibility, equipment modernity and variety. Then alternatives to fitness centers were defined (low price, middle segment, premium) and a group of five experts was formed, consisting of members of various fitness centers and experts in sports sciences, and academics who conduct customer behavior research in fitness centers. Based on the opinions of experts, three alternatives and eight selection criteria were used in the evaluation. Alternatives are listed based on the findings. In the first phase of the study, weighting of the criteria and consistency calculations were performed, after which each criterion was weighted in relation to every alternative. As a result, the best alternative was calculated. According to the findings, price was determined to be the most important criteria in renewing fitness center membership, while premium fitness centers were determined to be the most important alternative. The research provides suggestions for reducing dropout rates and for the decision to renew memberships in fitness centers (such as flexible pricing, customer interaction, quality, and equipment modernity).

Community programs can facilitate the access of vulnerable subgroups to physical activity (PA). This study analyzed the relationship between sociodemographic characteristics, health conditions, public open spaces (POS) usage, and women's PA. The 155 participants were assiduous in taking part in PA classes in POS in São José dos Pinhais, Brazil. The accelerometer-based PA measures identified four outcomes: (1) daily light-intensity PA (LPA), (2) daily moderate-to-vigorous intensity PA (MVPA), (3) LPA in POS, and (4) MVPA in POS. Linear regression, and the Durbin–Watson and Mann–Whitney U tests were used for data analysis in STATA software. The main results showed that the weekly frequency (β: 10.9, p < 0.01) and intensity of the main activity in the POS (β: 22.4, p < 0.05) were related to daily MVPA. Economic level and length of stay in the POS were positively related to the LPA performed (p < 0.05). Weekly frequency (β: 2.4, p < 0.01), length of stay (β: 11.0, p < 0.01), and intensity of PA practiced in the POS (β: 5.9, p < 0.05) showed a positive relationship with MVPA in the POS. In conclusion, there was a positive relationship between some analyzed variables and PA of different intensities, especially the consistent relationship between weekly frequency of POS usage and MVPA. Objective: Evaluate the presence of body dissatisfaction and whether there is a correlation with the nutritional status of physical activity practitioners. Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional study carried out with 100 practitioners of physical activity aged between = 18 and < 60. Data on gender, age, ethnicity, smoking and physical activity were collected. The nutritional parameters of weight, height, body mass index (BMI) and body fat percentage were evaluated. To assess the perception of body image, the Silhouette Scale was used. Results: Of the participants included, 70% were female. Mean age was 33.3 ±9.3 years, BMI was 23.8± 4.0 kg/m2 and body fat percentage was 21.3± 5.2 for females and 12, 2 ±4.8 for males. The prevalence of body dissatisfaction was 95% and did not correlate with anthropometric assessment, BMI and body fat percentage, nor with the frequency of physical activity. Individuals with a frequency of physical activity greater than or equal to 5 times a week had a mean percentage of fat significantly lower than those who practiced physical exercise 3 to 4 times a week. Conclusion: The prevalence of body image dissatisfaction was 95% and did not correlate with any variable. Background : Community-based fitness programs can support public health by providing access to physical activity opportunities for a vulnerable population with significant barriers. Unfortunately, programs specifically designed for people with disabilities (PWD) and staff training to promote inclusion for PWD in general population programs is limited. The current study aimed to review an on-going partnership that had formed to address this need. Objectives : The purpose of this study was to assess community partners' experiences with a community–academic partnership designed to implement a fitness program for people with multiple sclerosis and also to promote inclusion for PWD in community-based fitness programming. Methods : Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six community partners who had been engaged in a formal partnership with the academic institution for 2 or more years to understand partners' experiences and perspectives about the partnership. Interviews were audio/video recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed thematically. Results : Participants described their experiences as falling into four main areas. Pre-partnership experiences (or lack thereof) shaped participants views on entering into academic partnerships. Communication and planning for mutual benefit were key to getting the partnership started. Partners identified challenges and factors for success while they were in the thick of partnership activities. Finally, evaluation allowed for assessment and improvement of the partnership itself and its ultimate goals. Conclusions : Findings suggest that academic–community partnerships can be ideal for promoting inclusion for PWD and highlight insights that can be used in the development of future partnerships. Foundation: the recovery heart rate in physical efforts is a relevant indicator for health and sports professionals. Objective: to relate the acute recovery of the heart rate in a submaximal functional fitness session with the maximum oxygen consumption in physically active subjects. Methods: descriptive study with a quantitative approach with a convenience sample made up of 14 men (age 21.32±4.36 years; body mass 71.42±14.68 kg; height 1.75±0.17 m; BMI 23 01±3.61 kg/m2) and 5 women (age 22.81±3.48 years; body mass 65.82±8.45 kg; height 1.56±0.21 m; BMI 21.54± 1.35 kg/m2), they performed a maximal and incremental cardiorespiratory test (Course-Navette) and the WOD Pukie (150 burpees in the shortest possible time) on two days separated by 48 hours. Maximum heart rate, session heart rate, and recovery heart rate (1, 2, and 3 minutes) were recorded. The Shapiro-Wilk normality test and the Pearson correlation coefficient (95% confidence and a p-value of 0.05) were applied. Results: the maximum oxygen consumption was not significantly related in men (p>0.05), in the case of women it was positive with the recovery heart rate in all periods, but with significance in 1 minute (r = 0 .81; p<0.05) and 3 minutes (r = 0.93; p<0.01). Conclusions: maximal oxygen consumption was positively and significantly related to recovery heart rate in a functional fitness session in physically active women. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: To develop and substantiate a complex health and fitness program «Fitness Energy» for restoration of health of people who suffered from COVID-19 and experimentally verify its effectiveness at fitness centers. Materials and Methods: As a part of the research the complex assessment of somatic health status of people who suffered from COVID-19 was made using tests (Ruffier-Dickson Index, Stange and Gencha tests, Harvard step test, absolute and relative PWC 170). Results: The health and fitness program «Fitness Energy» is developed, implemented and experimentally verified as a complex of selective breathing and aerobic exercises which are done in a particular order and allow acting deliberately on human body of people who suffered from COVID-19 to secure the maximum health-improvement effect. Conclusions: Experimental research confirmed the effectiveness of health and fitness program «Fitness Energy», in particular the overall result upon indications of functional status of people in experimental group (25,78 %) 17,5 % higher than in control one (8,22 %). This indicates the effectiveness of rehabilitation patients, in particular, improves the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, strengthens the muscles involved in respiration, increases the overall tone and efficiency of the body. To stay healthy, people frequent sports facilities. This work aimed to evaluate air pollution and comfort parameters in a fitness club in the post lockdown period (due to the COVID-19 pandemic), focusing on particulate material (PM10, PM2.5) and gaseous pollutants (total volatile organic compounds -TVOCs, carbon dioxide - CO2, and carbon monoxide – CO). Sampling was carried out for 10 consecutive days in October 2020 in one fitness center (Oporto, Portugal). The results showed that indoor PM10 ranged from 1.4 to 122.5 µg/m3 and PM2.5 was between 0.8 and 25 µg/m3; the overall levels were in accordance with the current legislation. TVOC means were 0.39 mg/m3 when not occupied and 0.43 mg/m3 when exercising subjects were present, thus also fulfilling the limit 0.6 mg/m3). Average CO2 was 1400 mg/m3 with temporal maxima (2660-2894 mg/m3) exceeding the protection threshold. Finally, temperature and relative humidity exceeded the recommended comfort levels, especially during group activity classes.

Introduction: In recent years, exercise and physical activity have become common, and given sports psychology development, the desire for physical activity plays a vital role in influencing peoples mental health. Aim: This study is conducted to examine the effect of passion for physical activity on the psychological well-being of sports facilities participants. Method: The method is descriptive-correlation based on structural equation modeling. The population was all participants in sports facilities of Tehran, District 15, in 2021. The sample size was determined by Gpower 3.1, and 348 people were selected by the simple random sampling method. In order to collect data, the Passion for Physical Activity Scale (Vallerand et al., 2003), Satisfaction with Life Scale (Bails et al. 1998), Self-neglect and Physical Injury Experience Scale (Louis et al., 2016) were used. Statistical analysis was conducted by structural equations modeling with SPSS-24 and Smart PLS-3. Results: The results of structural equation modeling showed that obsessive (p=0.001) and harmonious (p=0.003) passions have a significant negative and positive effect on self-neglect. Also, obsessive passion has a significant positive effect on satisfaction with life, and obsessive passion has a significant positive effect on workout injury (p=0.001). Finally, self-neglect has a significant negative effect on satisfaction with life (p=0.001), but no significant effect was observed on the workout injury (p=0.204). Conclusion: The results show that obsessive and harmonious passions negatively and positively affect psychological well-being. Managers and officials should develop sports activities in intervention strategies to improve satisfaction and psychological well-being.

Can financial incentives aid habit formation in people attempting to establish a positive health behavior? We provide evidence on this question from a randomized controlled trial of modest-sized incentives to attend the gym among new members of a fitness facility. Our experiment randomized 690 participants into a control group that received a $30 payment unconditionally or one of 3 incentive groups that received a payment for attending the gym at least 9 times over the first 6 weeks of membership. Two incentive treatment arms offered monetary payments of $30 and $60. The third incentive treatment, motivated by the endowment effect, offered a physical item worth $30. All three incentives had only small impacts on attendance during members' first 6 weeks and no effect on their post-incentive visit trajectories. We document substantial overconfidence among new members about their likely visits and discuss how overconfidence may undermine the effectiveness of incentive programs.

Fitness trainers are widely in demand by both commercial fitness centres and individual people. They serve members in one-to-one personal training (PT) or group training (GX) in commercial fitness centres. However, the services provided by fitness trainers have not been consistent across the industry. This service inconsistency has led to an increased doubt about professionalism in conducting safe and correct exercise for the public. No studies have evaluated how fitness trainers make decisions when they curate exercise programs for members. This research utilized a qualitative semi-structured interview method to collect data from 16 fitness trainers in Greater Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Inverview data was verbatim transcribed and analyzed using a theory-driven analysis. The study investigated fitness training professional decision-making processes when they design and precribe fitness execise programming to clients. Using Cognitive Continuum Theory (CCT) as a lens to explore the decision-making processes revealed a dichotomy of decision-making processes for curating personal training and group training. Feedback mechanism in the implementation of personal training was proven to be more personalized than group training. There are four themes in decision-making processed discovered to be impreative characteristics for fitness trainers. The lack of knowledge regarding the extent of microbial contamination in Portuguese fitness centers (FC) puts attendees and athletes at risk for bioaerosol exposure. This study intends to characterize microbial contamination in Portuguese FC by passive sampling methods: electrostatic dust collectors (EDC) (N = 39), settled dust (N = 8), vacuum filters (N = 8), and used cleaning mops (N = 12). The obtained extracts were plated in selective culture media for fungi and bacteria. Filters, EDC, and mop samples' extracts were also screened for antifungal resistance and used for the molecular detection of the selected Aspergillus sections. The detection of mycotoxins was conducted using a high-performance liquid chromatograph (HPLC) system and to determine the cytotoxicity of microbial contaminants recovered by passive sampling, HepG2 (human liver carcinoma) and A549 (human alveolar epithelial) cells were employed. The results reinforce the use of passive sampling methods to identify the most critical areas and identify environmental factors that influence microbial contamination, namely having a swimming pool. The cardio fitness area presented the highest median value of total bacteria (TSA: 9.69 × 102 CFU m−2.day−1) and Gram-negative bacteria (VRBA: 1.23 CFU m−2.day−1), while for fungi it was the open space area, with 1.86 × 101 CFU m−2.day−1. Aspergillus sp. was present in EDC and in filters used to collect settled dust. Reduced azole susceptibility was observed in filters and EDC (on ICZ and VCZ), and in mops (on ICZ). Fumonisin B2 was the only mycotoxin detected and it was present in all sampling matrixes except settled dust. High and moderate cytotoxicity was obtained, suggesting that A549 cells were more sensitive to samples' contaminants. The observed widespread of critical toxigenic fungal species with clinical relevance, such as Aspergillus section Fumigati , as well as Fumonisin B2 emphasizes the importance of frequent and effective cleaning procedures while using shared mops appeared as a vehicle of cross-contamination. Introduction: In recent years, exercise and physical activity have become common, and given sports psychology development, the desire for physical activity plays a vital role in influencing peoples mental health. Aim: This study is conducted to examine the effect of passion for physical activity on the psychological well-being of sports facilities participants. Method: The method is descriptive-correlation based on structural equation modeling. The population was all participants in sports facilities of Tehran, District 15, in 2021. The sample size was determined by Gpower 3.1, and 348 people were selected by the simple random sampling method. In order to collect data, the Passion for Physical Activity Scale (Vallerand et al., 2003), Satisfaction with Life Scale (Bails et al. 1998), Self-neglect and Physical Injury Experience Scale (Louis et al., 2016) were used. Statistical analysis was conducted by structural equations modeling with SPSS-24 and Smart PLS-3. Results: The results of structural equation modeling showed that obsessive (p=0.001) and harmonious (p=0.003) passions have a significant negative and positive effect on self-neglect. Also, obsessive passion has a significant positive effect on satisfaction with life, and obsessive passion has a significant positive effect on workout injury (p=0.001). Finally, self-neglect has a significant negative effect on satisfaction with life (p=0.001), but no significant effect was observed on the workout injury (p=0.204). Conclusion: The results show that obsessive and harmonious passions negatively and positively affect psychological well-being. Managers and officials should develop sports activities in intervention strategies to improve satisfaction and psychological well-being. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This study examines factors that influence long-term fitness centre participation, applying the Physical Activity Maintenance Theory to assess psychological and contextual influences on exercise adherence., Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 17 regular fitness centre attendees in Taubaté, São Paulo, Brazil. Data were analysed using Bardin's Content Analysis, exploring the participants' experiences and the factors contributing to their sustained activity., Results: Autonomous motivation, such as enjoyment and satisfaction from workouts, along with self-efficacy, emerged as crucial for continued fitness centre attendance. The environment, including ambiance, social support, and facility quality, significantly impacted exercise persistence. However, challenges like time constraints, weather conditions, and personal issues occasionally hindered engagement. The study also highlights the role of personalized fitness programmes in supporting long-term adherence, suggesting that tailoring these programmes to individual goals could further enhance commitment., Conclusions: The findings underscore the importance of fitness centres creating environments that align with individual needs and preferences. Customized programmes that cater to both personal and communal needs could bolster long-term adherence. Future research should explore the impact of personalized, community-integrated fitness approaches on sustaining active lifestyles, emphasizing the importance of accommodating individual preferences in maintaining regular exercise habits.

Introduction We present the case of a patient with penetrating penile injury caused by splintering floorboards in a gymnasium. Case presentation A 24‐year‐old man was brought to the emergency department of our hospital because of an unintentional penetrating penile injury sustained while playing volleyball at a gymnasium. He dove into the wooden floor to fly‐receive the ball. When sliding with his abdomen on the floor, a wooden splinter from the floorboard stuck from the base of his penis to near the glans penis. The splinter was gently removed without bleeding under local anesthesia. Conclusions Splintering floorboards in gymnasiums can cause serious trauma, including penile injuries. Health‐care workers and users of public facilities, such as gymnasiums, should be aware of the accident risk associated with wooden floors.

This study aims to examine the effect of work-life quality on women trainers' turnover intentions in fitness centers. Data were collected from fitness centers for women in metropolitan cities in the western part of Turkey. 243 women fitness trainers participated in the study voluntarily. The work-life quality scale developed by Chen and Farh (2000) and the turnover intention scale developed by Landau and Hammer (1986) were used as data collection tools. Hierarchical regression analysis was used to determine the effect of worklife quality on turnover intention. The analysis showed that the quality of work-life in the fitness centers for women affected the turnover intention of women fitness trainers significantly and negatively (β=-0.358; p<0.01). As a result, this study suggests that organizations should increase the quality of work-life to reduce employee turnover intention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article aims to analyze the influence of the constructs 'perceived quality' and 'trust' in the repurchase intention in fitness centers and the relationship between the constructs. The sample included 193 respondents members/customers in three gyms in a small city in southern Brazil. The statistical technique used was Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), through which the conceptual model was tested. Results showed that perceived quality and trust positively influence the repurchase intention with a positive relationship existing between those constructs. This research makes it possible to further develop the literature on the topic since there are few studies in the fitness market. Moreover, an analysis of the reality of small cities and small businesses in the market addressed here is also made possible.

Background: Some physically active people exercise compulsively, which can be associated with several mental health challenges. Fitness instructors are considered important role models for an active, healthy lifestyle; yet little is known about their exercise motives and mental health. The aim of this study was to examine the presence of compulsive exercise and mental health challenges, and their interaction, in fitness instructors. Methods: A total of 270 fitness instructors from Norwegian fitness clubs were recruited for this cross-sectional study. Inclusion criteria were operating as instructors within the current year and understanding Norwegian language. Data were collected by an electronic questionnaire and included demographic information, hours of classes instructed and of personal physical activity, Compulsive Exercise Test (CET), Symptom Check List – 10 (SCL-10), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q)). Results: Females had higher CET scores than males, and 9% of all respondents had CET score above clinical cutoff. Respondents with clinical CET score had higher SCL-10, BDI and EDE-Q global- and subscale scores compared with their counterparts. Although CET was positively and significantly associated with BDI, SCL-10, and EDE-Q, only the latter explained the CET score (ß = 1.23, 99% CI = 0.87, 1.59). Conclusion: About one out of eleven instructors were above clinical CET cut-off, revealing symptoms of compulsive exercise. EDE-Q significantly contributed in a model explaining 43% of the variation of compulsive exercise. Plain English summary: For some people, physical activity may be driven by compulsive thoughts, which can be associated with mental health issues and psychosocial impairment. This makes it important to understand the underpinnings to compulsive exercise (CE). Fitness instructors are considered important facilitators for a healthy and physically active lifestyle, but there is little knowledge on the occurrence of CE among these role models. Previous findings report on a significant frequency of symptoms of eating disorders in fitness instructors, and as such it is reasonable to assume that CE is present. By concurrently obtaining information on symptoms of depression, anxiety and eating disorders, this study was able to explore explanations to the variance in occurrence of CE. Our main findings were a moderately elevated frequency of symptoms of depression and anxiety, and that 9% of 270 male and female fitness instructors demonstrated CE behavior. Participants demonstrating CE had higher levels of symptoms of depression, anxiety, and eating disorders compared with those without CE. Nevertheless, only symptoms of eating disorders explained the variation in CE severity. Other than increasing our understanding of CE, the main implication from these findings is a need to increase mental health literacy in fitness instructors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BackgroundThe effectiveness of clinic-based pulmonary rehabilitation in advanced COPD is well established, but few data exist for less severe patients treated in alternative settings. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a novel, community-based exercise program (CBE) was feasible and effective for patients with moderate COPD.MethodsNineteen patients with moderate COPD (mean FEV1 62%) and self-reported exercise impairment were randomized to 12-weeks of progressive endurance and strength training at a local health club under the guidance of a certified personal trainer, or to continuation of unsupervised habitual physical activity. Outcomes assessed at baseline and 12 weeks included session compliance, intensity adherence, treadmill endurance time, muscle strength, dyspnea, and health status.ResultsCompliance was 94% and adherence was 83%. Problem statement: Hydrogymnastics can improve older adults' functional fitness, but few studies have explored if using resistive elements during sessions would have any effect on functional fitness of middle-aged and older women. Aim: To verify strength training effects on functional fitness of middle-aged and older women while using resistive implements in hydrogymnastics. Material and methods: Experimental study, conducted with 15 women (mean=58.8, SD=8.2 years old), randomly divided into intervention and control groups. Hydrogymnastics training was held in 60-minute sessions, three times a week, for eight weeks. Besides traditional exercises, two specific exercises were incorporated in four series, 12-15 repetitions, with maximum speed and high intensity only for individuals in the intervention group. Functional fitness was assessed through gait speed, agility to sit and stand, and upper-limb strength and resistance at pre and post eight-week training. Data were analyzed with two-way ANOVA for repeated measures (group and time), proportional differences (Δ%), and effect size (Cohen's d). Results: Both groups showed an improvement in gait speed, decreasing time by five seconds (Δ%: - 16%; F: 34.3; p<0.001). Both groups showed a significant increment in the number of repetitions for the agility to sit and stand test (Δ%: ≈ 14%; F: 11.63; p<0.001), but no interaction was observed between time and group (F: 0.17; p=0.681). On the strength and upper-limb resistance, individuals from the intervention group had a mean increase of 8.6 repetitions (Δ%: 45%), while those in the control group remained the same (Δ%: 1%). Though not significant (F: 3.39; p=0.07) a difference was found between groups (F: 9.04; p<0.01). The effect size was null or small for all outcome variables (0.229-3.256). Conclusion: The training allowed for improved functional fitness in middle-aged and older women, especially in the strength and upperlimb muscular resistance component. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Issue addressed: Growing evidence suggests that public parks enable physically active communities; however, little is known of the impact of council‐provided exercise facilities in outdoor green spaces, and the challenges of providing this infrastructure at a local level. This paper sought to describe some of the factors, as perceived by local government area (LGA) council representatives within Queensland, Australia, that influence community use of, as well as council provision for, weight‐bearing outdoor fitness station infrastructure in public parks. Methods: A nested mixed‐methods study was employed, comprised of a survey sent to council representatives for all 78 Queensland LGAs (Stage 1), and follow‐up interviews to elicit further insights into the provision of infrastructure in public parks (Stage 2; n = 7). Perceptions around participants' corporate role in the provision of outdoor fitness stations were the focus of analyses. Findings: A thematic analysis described themes of: Moderating public attitudes and motivation; The flow of information; Supporting an active community; Return on investment; and Safety, complianceand climate. Provision of equipment was influenced by the perception that it represented poor value for money, in terms of the desired outcome of increased physical activity, especially when compared with other types of infrastructure (particularly, walking trails); however, opinions about this lack of use outdoor exercise equipment were most often based on anecdotal evidence. Conclusions: Councils are motivated to support active communities. They would benefit from better access to information about park usage, strategies for marketing healthy living initiatives and data about the economic benefits of parks. Establishing a balanced diet is necessary for obtaining the required daily micronutrients and macronutrients. However, the importance of using dietary supplements to complement one's diet is a significant aspect to consider. While studies have reported the prevalence and patterns of dietary supplements in Saudi Arabia, most focused on university students, women in their reproductive life—particularly during pregnancy—or male athletes. Hence, the objective of this study is to estimate the prevalence and patterns of dietary supplement usage, along with the associated sociodemographic and psychiatric predictors among women attending fitness centers in Saudi Arabia. A cross-sectional design was utilized using a structured questionnaire to collect data on dietary intakes such as consumption, nutrition supplements, type of nutrition supplements, and reason for consuming dietary supplements. Data collection occurred in female fitness centers, with participants accessing the questionnaires through QR codes linked to online Google forms. The dietary usage was assessed using a structured questionnaire developed by the study authors, and depressive and anxiety symptoms were assessed using the PHQ-9 and the GAD-7 scales, respectively. SPSS 23.0 was utilized to analyze the data, and a multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the association between sociodemographic and psychiatric predictors and patterns of dietary supplement usage. The results were presented by reporting an unadjusted and adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with 95 % Confidence Intervals (CIs). The total number of participants in this study was 453 women. Half of the 453 women (46.1 %) consumed dietary supplements, and (84.0 %) reported taking proteins, caffeine, creatinine, mineral salts, fish oil, and/or amino acids or a combination of these dietary supplements. A considerable number of women (41.0 %) reported that a doctor, dietitian, or trainer motivated them to take the dietary supplement, and (38.0 %) of women self-prescribed dietary supplements. More than half (51 %) of the women consumed dietary supplements to compensate for nutrient deficiency, and 48 % used them to improve their health. Women who did not work to earn were 53 % less likely to consume dietary supplements (AOR = 0.47; [95 % CI: 0.30–0.72]) than women who reported working to earn either in the private or government sector. Depressed women were (42 %) less likely to consume dietary supplements than non-depressed women (AOR = 0.58; [95 % CI: 0.33–0.99]) after adjusting for sociodemographic variables and other medical conditions. It has been evident that a large proportion of women enrolled in the fitness center report consuming dietary supplements, mostly to compensate for energy and to improve overall health. The findings highlight that non-working and depressed women were less likely to use dietary supplements than their counterparts. By understanding these patterns, the community can tailor health interventions and policies to ensure equitable access to proper dietary support, especially for those facing challenges like depression and unemployment. Future research on a larger sample of women outside fitness centers is encouraged to explore further dietary supplement consumption and patterns among diverse population groups, and to ultimately develop health guidelines for the appropriate use of supplements. Several studies have been conducted to identify the factors that most influence on service quality and customer satisfaction in the fitness industry. However, little attention has been dedicated to the identification of the most relevant attributes. This study aims to fulfill this gap and suggests that it is also necessary to identify the factors and the attributes which are most important concerning the perceptions of customers of fitness centers. Based on the scientific literature, a 23-item questionnaire was designed and a sample of 368 customers of four Brazilian fitness centers was considered. Factorial analysis and Quartile analysis revealed that the most important factors are related to Workout facilities & Price and Staff. The fitness equipment must be varied and in sufficient quantity, besides being in perfect working order. Special attention should be dedicated to the instructors' politeness and competence, and the accuracy of information they provide. The overall cleanliness of the fitness center and the value of service are also important.

Objectives: Traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) commonly occur in sport clubs. The knowledge and performance of fitness trainers play an important role in management of such injuries. This study sought to assess the effect of an educational pamphlet on knowledge level and performance of fitness trainers about TDIs in Tehran in 2018. Materials and Methods: In this interventional study, a pamphlet was designed to enhance the knowledge level of fitness trainers. Ninety-five fitness trainers were randomly divided into two groups of intervention and control (n=49 in the control group and n=46 in the interventional group), and were requested to fill out a valid and reliable researcher-designed questionnaire about TDIs before and 1 month after pamphlet distribution. The questionnaire consisted of three domains of demographic information, knowledge questions, and performance questions. The results were analyzed using SPSS 25 via the Chi-square test and repeated measures ANOVA considering the intervention as the between-subject factor. Results: The knowledge score of fitness trainers about TDIs was not adequately high in the intervention or the control group before the intervention. After the intervention, the performance of participants improved in both groups. This increase was significantly greater in the intervention group (P=0.035). There was no significant difference between the two groups in the knowledge domain (P=0.185). Conclusion: Educational pamphlets can effectively enhance the knowledge level of fitness trainers about TDIs. However, the magnitude of this effect was not significant in our study. Future studies are recommended to compare the efficacy of educational pamphlets with other educational tools.

This study aimed to identify the awareness level of the doping risks among the participants in fitness centers in Jerusalem Governorate, and to determine the relationship of age, years of practice, and the goal of practice to the awareness level. The researchers used the descriptive survey approach due to its relevance to the nature of the study. The sample of the study consisted of (118) participants from fitness centers in Jerusalem Governorate, distributed on (3) centers chosen in a simple randomly manner. The researchers used (Petroczi, & Aidman, 2009) measurement tool to verify its authenticity and reliability, and as a tool to collect data that included (22) paragraphs in order to measure the awareness level of the doping risks. The data was analyzed by using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) program. The results of the study showed that the total degree of awareness of the doping risks among participants in fitness centers in Jerusalem Directorate was medium. It also indicated that there was a level of awareness among participants aged (21-40 years), over 40 years, and those of more than 10 years of experience in sporting activities, towards the risk of doping, the athletes have a higher awareness of the doping risks, than those who participate for health and ideal body building purposes.

The Minnesota Department of Health investigated a coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak at a fitness center in Olmsted County, Minnesota. Twenty-three severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections (5 employees and 18 members) were identified. An epidemiological investigation supported by whole genome sequencing demonstrated that transmission of SARS-CoV-2 occurred at the fitness center despite following recommended prevention strategies.
