This paper presents the results of comparing the validity of the Rorschach test with the. validities of individual neurologic procedures in distinguishing between patients with and those without lesions of the central nervous system.In the process of collecting data on the cross validation of the Rorschach test and its applicability to central nervous system pathology reported in a previous paper,1 we also obtained data on standard neurologic procedures. The method employed to obtain criterion groups in the cross-validation study was designed so as to provide samples as representative as possible of everyday diagnostic cases in hospital neurology. The method was suggested by Piotrowski4 about 15 years ago:The best control for the cerebral group would seem to be one composed of patients who had been seriously considered to have cerebral lesions and in whom the possibility of cerebral lesions was excluded after a longer period of observation.

For the past two years we have had under observation 2 patients with postarsphenamine dermatitis terminating in erythema, pigmentation, telangiectasia, atrophy and alopecia, a combination of symptoms which strikingly resembles those first described by Jacobi1 at the German Dermatologic Congress in Berne in 1906 and named by him poikiloderma atrophicans vasculare. The body of literature on this subject is comparatively small, considering the fact that the disease has been known to the medical profession for thirty-five years. Since Jacobi's case approximately 160 others have been reported, most of them for confirmation of diagnosis before various local dermatologic societies. It is interesting to note that in only 4 of these cases was the poikiloderma or the poikiloderma-like changes in the skin regarded by the author as the sequels of a postarsphenamine dermatitis; these 4 all appeared in the foreign literature.REVIEW OF THE LITERATUREK. DAY, M.D. The patient, a 22-year-old white housewife, was first seen on February 9, 1959, with the complaint of a tender area on the left chest, first noted three and one-half years ago, immediately following birth of a baby. It began as a whitish pruritic area immediately below the left breast. The spot enlarged only slightly, and other similar areas developed nearby. Laden, M.D.: We mentioned under significant personal history that the patient had lived in Florida from birth, and that Australian Pines were prevalent in that area, in order to draw attention to the fact that recent epidemiological studies have indicated a possible etiologic relationship between exposure to certain types of pines and the occurrence of sarcoidosis. In line with this, there is an article which has recently appeared in the literature reporting the occurrence in three Negro sibling children of sarcoidosis. (Kendig, E. L., Jr., and others: New England J. Med. 260:962, 1959). They live in the area of Richmond, Virginia, which, as was mentioned in the article, is an area where these pines grow. Cylindroma (Turban Tumors). Presented by Dr. S. W. Becker and (by invitation) Dr. A. Berman.This 44-year-old white man developed four tumors on the scalp at the age of 27. They were called "wens" by his local physician and were excised. He remained free of lesions for approximately two years when, while in New Guinea, new tumors appeared on the scalp and rapidly enlarged. Since then, many new lesions have developed. According to the patient, new lesions continue to appear and existing tumors continue to enlarge.The patient states he has had dengue fever (1942) and malaria (1945). In 1943, a thyroglossal duct cyst was excised. A vasectomy was performed in 1957.No similar lesions of the scalp are known to have occurred in other members of the family, although a 30-year-old brother has "a few little tumors" in the perinasal folds.The significant physical findings are

IN DECEMBER 1944, Andrews, Braestrup and Heisel1 published a study of the exit dose in dermatologic roentgen therapy. This factor was defined as the amount of radiation received by the skin opposite an irradiated surface. Their work suggested that the exit dose was an important reason for the localization of radiodermatitis on the middle part of the face, hands and feet following low voltage roentgen therapy. Since this paper was presented chiefly from an experimental point of view, the purpose of the present study is to show the clinical significance of the exit dose. Tables are included which set forth the exit dose values at various kilovoltages commonly used in the treatment of simple inflammatory dermatoses. It is in these diseases that fractional dosage is repeated on extensive areas. When this radiation is used on the face and extremities the exit dose becomes an important consideration.Numerous reviews of

We are presenting a report of 332 cases of early syphilis treated in the past three years with massive doses of arsphenamine by the syringe method, the treatment period being five to six days. Arsphenamine 1 was chosen because of our experience in the rapid healing of syphilitic lesions and the spectacular cures we had witnessed with this drug in early syphilis when other arsenicals had failed, and again because of the excellent results we had obtained in the treatment of early syphilis at the Vanderbilt Clinic over a period of some twelve years with this arsenical. Such observations encouraged us to think that some one should evaluate this drug in an intensive treatment program of early syphilis, i. e. the five day treatment.We were prompted to undertake this study by the encouraging results of Leifer, Chargin and Hyman,2 who treated 382 patients by the intravenous drip method

HOW WELL do predictions based upon psychiatric interviewers' ratings of the effectiveness of performance, hold up against ratings in the field one year later?Previous studies of psychiatrists' interviews and their predictions via rating scales of effectiveness of performance have been presented by Ulrich and Trumbo1 in their excellent review article "The Selection Interview Since 1949." A CASE FOR DIAGNOSIS (GRANULOMA). PRESENTED BY WALTER NICKEL, M.D., AND (BY INVITATION) R. B. PAPPENFORT, M.D. This 6-month-old Negro boy was born without complications. He was immediately examined by a pediatrician, who noticed no abnormalities other than an umbilical hernia and recalls no unusual appearance to the penis and scrotum. However, the mother noticed the slow evolution of an enlarging and thickened scrotum. At 3 months of age the mother felt "lumps" in the scrotum; it has become nodular and thickened, though at times the mother thinks it may be more soft and slightly smaller.The patient has developed properly and has been healthy as far as is known.Family history reveals the patient to be the youngest of three healthy siblings. There have been no congenital abnormalities among parents, relatives, or grandparents. There is no history of tuberculosis, venereal disease, or diabetes.Examination: The scrotum is enlarged, markedly

• The intravitreal injection of cefazolin sodium was evaluated with respect to its potential toxicity, efficacy, and clearance in the treatment of bacterial endophthalmitis in the rabbit model. Toxicity evaluation included indirect ophthalmoscopy, scotopic electroretinogram, and light microscopy of histopathologic specimens. Rabbits given doses up to and including 2.25 mg of cefazolin sodium showed no evidence of toxic reaction by these criteria after two weeks of observation. When injected within 24 hours of inoculation, 2.25 mg of cefazolin sodium sterilized five of six rabbit eyes infected with Staphylococcus aureus. Following intravitreal injection of 2.25 mg of cefazolin sodium, vitreous concentrations in excess of the minimum inhibitory concentration for S aureus were maintained for five days. A 2.25-mg dose of cefazolin sodium appears to be nontoxic, effective, and biologically active against susceptible organisms during a prolonged period, when injected into the vitreous cavity of the pigmented rabbit in vivo.

Attention has recently been called to a relation between testicular hormones and some secondary sexual or “ambosexual” characters in several avian species, but it is still too early to say how widespread the observed reactions may be. In the English sparrow, Keck1has found the color of the beak an excellent indicator of the amount of testicular hormone circulating in the blood, while the plumage is not such an indicator; van Ooordt and Junge2find that in one of the gulls a testicular hormone is necessary for development in the male of colors in bill and feet which are found in both sexes during the breeding season; and Gallagher, Domm and Koch3report that injection of purified testicular extract restores the plumage of Sebright capons to its normal form and color. In light of these findings, and since plumage and eye-color of the male blackbird (Euphagus cyanocephalus) seem to be unaffected by the injection of theelin,4it was thought desirable to see if secondary sexual characters in the females of this species would respond to the male hormone.The substance used for the purpose was an extract prepared from beef testes by the procedure of Gallagher and Koch.5Following the final acetone extraction, the material was in each case evaporated to a thick paste and injected directly or first taken up in olive oil. It proved to be somewhat irritating to blackbirds but was readily tolerated by capons on which it was tested and in which it produced the expected effects on comb and plumage.Three tests were made on adult females weighing about 60 gm. each: one in July, just after the breeding season; one in August; and one in March.
